The Logotherapy Association in Israel is pleased to announce
The First International Logotherapy Congress in Israel - 2nd – 5th November 2014
Meaning as a path to Life
Invitation and Call for Papers
The idea behind the Congress
The main idea of the congress is to evoke interest in and awareness of the principles of
meaningful living and their application in daily life, as expounded by the Logotherapy of Viktor
Frankl.
Logotherapy, advocating healing through meaning, was founded by Dr. Viktor Frankl, neurologist,
psychiatrist and psychotherapist. His first book, the bestseller, "Man's search for meaning"; a book
on his experiences and observations relating to finding meaning even in the horrors of the Nazi
death and extermination camps. He lost his wife, parents and brother, but survived, yet with the
deepened faith that no matter how bad the circumstances and how painful our sufferings, we
always have the freedom to act humanely and to retain our human dignity. We can turn a tragedy
into a personal triumph by the exemplary way we choose to face our suffering and bear it.
The Congress will seek to promote the message of the importance of finding meaning in life and to
strengthen the human resolve to deal with the many problems, conflicts, threats and tragedies
which continually beset the individual and community in this tiny country and region.
This Congress will illuminate what Frankl called: "the defiant power of the human spirit", namely,
the ability to triumphantly overcome even the most difficult and painful circumstances in life, by the
evoked determination to advance "in spite of it all!"
It is most meaningful to illuminate this magnificent human asset in Israel, a State which arose out
of the ashes of the Holocaust and became home, once again, to Jews returning from more than 70
different countries, after almost two thousand years of worldwide dispersion and persecution, to
become one nation with one destiny. Israel is a land of incredible achievements. It signifies the
rebuilding of the life of the Jewish people with hope in a future worth struggling for and working
towards with faith and perseverance, a hope that it holds out for all.
The congress offers a unique opportunity to individuals and to professionals in every field, to learn
how to apply Logotherapy in their daily life and in the various fields of service to their respective
communities in Israel and abroad.
Within the greater scheme of things, the message of this Congress to all near and far is a
"Shalom", signifying a peace and a co-existence that are reachable, and a building of meaningful
relationships between the different ethnic, secular and religious groups in Israel, between Israel
and our neighbors, and between Israel and the nations of the world.
It is the purpose of this Congress to inspire each one of its participants with new faith in the
meaning and purpose of their own precious lives as they seek to help others to see meaning in
theirs.
"Man is responsible for the fulfillment of the specific meaning of his personal life.
But he is also responsible before something, or to something, be it society, or humanity, or mankind, or his conscience."
Viktor E. Frankl, Psychotherapy and Existentialism
