ALL SOUL’S DAY • NOVEMBER 2, 2014 As members of St. Dominic Catholic Parish, we commit ourselves “To Seek Christ, Know Christ, and Become Christ, Each One for the Sake of All.” 18255 WEST CAPITOL DRIVE • BROOKFIELD, WI 53045 Message from Our Pastor November is a special month to visit cemeteries and to recall the memories of our departed loved ones. To help you make your visits times of prayer, we have put together an insert in this weekend’s bulletin entitled, Prayer Service for the Visitation of a Loved One’s Gravesite. It is important to take our children and grandchildren to visit the gravesites of deceased family members. It gives parents the opportunity to remind children of the respect we give to the sacred space found in our cemeteries. As Christians, we call it holy ground! On Wednesday, November 5, we will celebrate the annual Mass of Remembrance at 6:30 pm. Family members, who have experienced the death of loved ones since November 2013, will gather, as we recall their names and light a special candle in their memory. There have been 1,194 people buried from St. Dominic, since our parish was founded in 1956. Over the past twelve months, 44 people have been buried. Your presence can help offer support to the grieving families, who gather as we raise our voices in prayer for the eternal happiness of those who have died, and as we ask for healing and consolation for loved ones. Thank you to those who were able to participate in the Commitment Call at the beginning of each Mass last weekend. This is always a special part of our annual time, talent and treasure appeal renewal! ~Father David H. Reith Jane G. Alberti Carmen G. Alvarado Jane G. Alberti Carmen G. At the 9:00 am Mass next weekend, we will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens for those who have not been baptized, and the Rite of Welcoming Candidates for those who have been baptized, but in other religious traditions or who were baptized Catholic, but were not raised in the faith and never received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. During these Rites, the inquirers (those seeking to be baptized or be brought into full communion with the Church) publicly declare their intentions, and we welcome them and accept them as persons who intend to become members. This year, we are welcoming the entire Landowski Family, as well as parish member, Scott Castello, husband of Kristi and father of Anna and Aylin. Please pray for, and welcome those seeking baptism: May Landowski, Faith Landowski, Mina Landowski, Julia Landowski and Luke Landowski Last Week To Order College / Military Care Packages! Order deadline is Friday, November 7. Additional order forms are available on stdominic.net, if you’d like to send a care package with food and supplies, that will be mailed to college students and military personnel, the first week in December. The Seven Storey Mountain St. Dominic Book Club November Book Club Selection! In 1941, a brilliant, good-looking young man decided to give up a promising literary career in New York, to enter a monastery in Kentucky, from where he proceeded to become one of the most influential writers of this century. Talk about losing your life in order to find it. Thomas Merton's first book, The Seven Storey Mountain, describes his early doubts, his conversion to a Catholic faith of extreme certainty, and his decision to take life vows as a Trappist. Although his conversionary piety sometimes falls into sticky-sweet abstractions, Merton's autobiographical reflections are mostly wise, humble, and concrete. The best reason to read The Seven Storey Mountain, however, may be the one Merton provided in his introduction to its Japanese translation: "I seek to speak to you, in some way, as your own self. Who can tell what this may mean? I myself do not know, but if you listen, things will be said that are perhaps not written in this book. And this will be due not to me but to the One who lives and speaks in both." Questions? Contact Nancy Jurss at [email protected]. Please join us Monday, November 10 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center, for a discussion of “The Seven Storey Mountain” by Thomas Merton. All are welcome! St. Dominic Catholic Parish Is Hiring! St. Dominic’s mission, “To seek Christ, know Christ, and become Christ, each one for the sake of all”, calls us to grow as disciples, to take action in our faith and community, and helps us to recognize the many blessings in our lives despite the occasional struggles we have with work, parenting, and the financial obligations that come with being homeowners. St. Dominic helps to form us to become better parents, spouses, friends, neighbors, and co-workers by giving us the tools to grow in our faith and by offering amazing worship and discipleship opportunities such as Arise, Matthew Kelly, Pizza with the Pope, and Surrender. We have an amazing parish with faith-filled disciples, helping us to grow in the Church’s mission, helping us to prepare for Christ’s second coming, and making our community a better place to live. Matt and I prayerfully consider how much of our time, talent and treasure we can give back to St. Dominic. Despite the financial concerns of paying back student loans, paying for day care, and all the other costs of being homeowners, we find it is worthwhile to not only give of our time, but to also give financially to St. Dominic in return for the wonderful opportunities we have as parishioners, helping us to be formed in our faith as disciples of Christ. At the end of the day, investing in our faith by giving of our time, talent and treasure to St. Dominic is well worth the commitment we have made as a family. ~ Matt & Nora DeLise As you prepare to answer God’s call to faithful stewardship this year through the annual stewardship renewal, please take a moment to reflect on all the blessings in your own life and consider how you’ve been called as disciples of Christ to embrace Stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship Summary Budget for fiscal year end 6/30/15: $1,725,321 ******** Budget for 7/1/14 through 10/26/14: $491,754 Actual for 7/1/14 through 10/26/14: $482,145 Shortfall to date: $ 9,609 ******** Actual for week ending 10/26/14: $22,950 Budget for week ending 10/26/14: $28,220 Stewardship Commitment RENEWAL The 2015 St. Dominic Stewardship Renewal offers you an opportunity to be ignited in faith and to answer your call to holiness. Justice is one of the cardinal virtues, along with prudence, fortitude and temperance. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes from St. Augustine, "To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one's heart, with all one's soul and with all one's efforts; from this it comes about that love is kept whole and uncorrupted (through temperance). No misfortune can disturb it (and this is fortitude). It obeys only God (and this is justice), and is careful in discerning things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence)" (#1809). Justice, unlike what it is known for, is not a means of judgment. It is not about what is fair or equal. It is about the predisposition to respect the right of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good" (CCC #1807). Let us work together to model justice for future generations by exacting love and mercy, and trusting that God's will be done. Knight Pride! Congratulations to all of our eighth grade volleyball teams for earning a place in the annual St. Elizabeth Ann Seton tournament! All of our teams represented St. Dominic Catholic Parish and School very well this past week, as they fought hard as Knights for Christ. We will gather this night to remember them and celebrate their lives. You are invited to participate with your family in this evening of remembrance. Mass that evening begins with the Inscription of Names in the Book of the Names of the Dead at 6:15 p.m. If you would like to remember someone in prayer that night, please inscribe their name in the Book which will be displayed in the sanctuary. Throughout the entire month of November, the Book of the Names of the Dead will be displayed near the baptismal font. Pictures of loved ones may be brought in and displayed in narthexes. We remember… we celebrate… we believe. PRAYER SERVICE FOR THE VISITATION OF A LOVED ONE’S GRAVE SITE Sign of the Cross Opening Prayer: Let us pray: All-powerful God, Whose mercy is never withheld From those who call upon you in hope, Look kindly upon our loved one (s), Who has/have departed from this life believing in you; Number him/her/ them among the blessed for evermore. We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. Reading: A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans (Romans 14: 7-9) None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we live, we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die, we die as his servants. Both in life and death, we are the Lord’s. That is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. The Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. Psalm Response: Psalm 130 Verse 1: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive To the voice of my pleading. Refrain: (Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life) Verse 2: If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: For this we revere you. Refrain: (Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life) Verse 3: My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord More than a watchman for daybreak. Let the watchman count on daybreak And Israel on the Lord. Please see other side Refrain: (Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life) Verse 4: Because with the Lord there is mercy And fullness of redemption, Israel indeed he will redeem From all its iniquity. Refrain: (Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life) Decade of the Rosary: The First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection of Jesus The Lord’s Prayer Ten Hail Mary’s Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. * * * * * May the love of God and the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ Bless and console us And gently wipe every tear from our eyes: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Give the Gift of Hope with Smiles for Miles Bring Your Gifts Oct. 30 – Dec. 10 Last year, the St. Dominic parish and school communities came together and collected 256 shoebox gifts for the children of La Sagrada Familia in the Dominican Republic. This year we are going to focus on our immigrant friends from Myanmar (Karen, Karenni and Chin) at St. Michael Parish in Milwaukee. Gift Ideas St. Michael has a few specific needs. Here are a few suggestions: school supplies, warm socks, hats & mittens, toys, dolls, small cars, nail polish, gum or chocolate, crayons and books are all good gifts. (Please do NOT include war-related toys). We also have a special request this year for warm sweaters and boots. For more ideas, see the Christmas tree display near the school office. NO Postage required, it’s free! In the past, it cost $7 to mail each box. But this year, it is free to deliver the gifts to the children at St. Michael, ourselves. If you would still like to make a donation, we are accepting boots and warm sweaters. A cash donation is also appreciated! Thank You! We are asking that you use your own shoebox again this year. You will find the boy/girl labels below. Please cut out the appropriate label and tape it to your box. If you need additional supplies, please feel free to pick them up at the Christmas tree near the school office. We appreciate all your help with this important project! St. Michael Parish, located in the heart of Milwaukee, is a unique parish community serving Hmong, Laotian, Latino, African American, American Indian and EuroAmerican parishioners. Their parish is blessed with a beautiful diversity of people, languages and ethnicities. Their parish, a neighborhood anchor, also faces the challenge of helping families — many of whom are immigrant — deal with language issues, poverty and neighborhood crime. This year, our parish and school community is “adopting” the children and families of St. Michael Parish as the focus of our Smiles For Miles project. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity. The Christmas Clearing Council (CCC) of Waukesha County has served this community and its children for 65 years. Last year, 4600 children in need were served. he CCC helps struggling families, and makes sure that children are not forgotten during the Christmas season. We need your help! With another anticipated brutally cold winter, we need to ensure that every child has a warm, waterproof pair of mittens or gloves. Throughout the month of November, collection barrels will be located in both Church entrances. Please be generous, and pick up a couple of pairs of waterproof mittens and gloves when you’re out shopping. Hats are most welcome as well. Thank you in advance for warming the hearts and hands of children in Waukesha County!
