ALL SOUL’S DAY • NOVEMBER 2, 2014
As members of St. Dominic Catholic Parish, we commit ourselves
“To Seek Christ, Know Christ, and Become Christ,
Each One for the Sake of All.”
18255 WEST CAPITOL DRIVE • BROOKFIELD, WI 53045
Message from Our Pastor
November is a special month to visit
cemeteries and to recall the memories
of our departed loved ones. To help
you make your visits times of prayer,
we have put together an insert in this
weekend’s bulletin entitled, Prayer
Service for the Visitation of a Loved
One’s Gravesite.
It is important to take our children
and grandchildren to visit the
gravesites of deceased family members.
It gives parents the opportunity to
remind children of the respect we give
to the sacred space found in our
cemeteries. As Christians, we call it
holy ground!
On Wednesday, November 5, we will
celebrate the annual Mass of
Remembrance at 6:30 pm. Family
members, who have experienced the
death of loved ones since November
2013, will gather, as we recall their
names and light a special candle in
their memory.
There have been 1,194 people buried
from St. Dominic, since our parish was
founded in 1956. Over the past twelve
months, 44 people have been buried.
Your presence can help offer support
to the grieving families, who gather as
we raise our voices in prayer for the
eternal happiness of those who have
died, and as we ask for healing and
consolation for loved ones.
Thank you to those who were able to
participate in the Commitment Call at
the beginning of each Mass last
weekend. This is always a special part
of our annual time, talent and treasure
appeal renewal!

Rites of Acceptance and Welcome
Next week marks a watershed moment for those in our parish who are on the
journey to becoming Catholic. At the
9:00 am Mass next weekend, we will
celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into
the Order of Catechumens for those
who have not been baptized, and the
Rite of Welcoming Candidates for
those who have been baptized, but in
other religious traditions or who
were baptized Catholic, but were not
raised in the faith and never received
the sacraments of Eucharist and
Confirmation. During these Rites, the inquirers (those seeking to be baptized or
be brought into full communion with the Church) publicly declare their
intentions, and we welcome them and accept them as persons who intend to
become members.
This year, we are welcoming the entire Landowski Family, as
well as parish member, Scott Castello, husband of Kristi and
father of Anna and Aylin.
Please pray for, and welcome those seeking baptism:
May Landowski, Faith Landowski, Mina Landowski, Julia Landowski
and Luke Landowski

Again this year, we are going to be collecting shoeboxes for
children in need. The only difference is, we’ll be delivering our
filled shoeboxes to our immigrant friends from Myanmar. These
children have reached out to St. Michael Parish in Milwaukee for
help, and St. Michael has reached out to us for help in bringing
smiles to these children this Christmas. Please find the best shoebox in your
closet, fill it with small gifts, school supplies, warm hats, mittens and socks, and
return it to your classroom or place it under the tables in the narthexes before
Dec. 10. Help us to make Smiles for Miles a huge success, by exceeding our

The Seven Storey Mountain
St. Dominic Book Club
November Book Club Selection!
In 1941, a brilliant, good-looking young man decided to
give up a promising literary career in New York, to enter
a monastery in Kentucky, from where he proceeded to
become one of the most influential writers of this century.
Talk about losing your life in order to find it. Thomas
Merton's first book, The Seven Storey Mountain,
describes his early doubts, his conversion to a Catholic
faith of extreme certainty, and his decision to take life
vows as a Trappist. Although his conversionary piety
sometimes falls into sticky-sweet abstractions, Merton's
autobiographical reflections are mostly wise, humble, and concrete. The best reason
to read The Seven Storey Mountain, however, may be the one Merton provided in
his introduction to its Japanese translation: "I seek to speak to you, in some way, as
your own self. Who can tell what this may mean? I myself do not know, but if you listen,
things will be said that are perhaps not written in this book. And this will be due not to
me but to the One who lives and speaks in both."
Questions? Contact Nancy Jurss at [email protected].
Please join us Monday, November 10 at 7:00 pm in the Parish
Center, for a discussion of “The Seven Storey Mountain” by
Thomas Merton. All are welcome!

EMBRACING STEWARDSHIP
Answering the Holy Spirit’s invitation and St Dominic’s mission is why, despite
the busyness of life with a toddler, preparing for our growing family, and working
at our jobs, Matt and I decided to be more involved in this wonderful community.
St. Dominic’s mission, “To seek Christ, know Christ, and become Christ, each one for
the sake of all”, calls us to grow as disciples, to take action in our faith and
community, and helps us to recognize the many blessings in our lives despite the
occasional struggles we have with work, parenting, and the financial obligations that
come with being homeowners. St. Dominic helps to form us to become better
parents, spouses, friends, neighbors, and co-workers by giving us the tools to grow in
our faith and by offering amazing worship and discipleship opportunities such as
Arise, Matthew Kelly, Pizza with the Pope, and Surrender.
We have an amazing parish with faith-filled disciples, helping us to grow in the
Church’s mission, helping us to prepare for Christ’s second coming, and making our
community a better place to live. Matt and I prayerfully consider how much of our
time, talent and treasure we can give back to St. Dominic. Despite the financial
concerns of paying back student loans, paying for day care, and all the other costs of
being homeowners, we find it is worthwhile to not only give of our time, but to also
give financially to St. Dominic in return for the wonderful opportunities we have as
parishioners, helping us to be formed in our faith as disciples of Christ. At the end of
the day, investing in our faith by giving of our time, talent and treasure to St. Dominic
is well worth the commitment we have made as a family.
~ Matt & Nora DeLise

If you already give more than 2.5% - 5% of your income, consider an increase.
Trust in God to care for all your needs;
Give God what He asks of us and offer a 10% tithe;

November Virtue Of The Month - Justice (Luke 6:37)
This month, the students are focusing on the virtue of justice. Justice is one of
the cardinal virtues, along with prudence,
fortitude and temperance. As the Catechism
of the Catholic Church quotes from St.
Augustine, "To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one's heart, with
all one's soul and with all one's efforts; from this it comes about that love is kept
whole and uncorrupted (through temperance). No misfortune can disturb it (and
this is fortitude). It obeys only God (and this is justice), and is careful in discerning
things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is
prudence)" (#1809). Justice, unlike what it is known for, is not a means of
judgment. It is not about what is fair or equal. It is about the predisposition to
respect the right of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony
that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good" (CCC
#1807). Let us work together to model justice for future generations by
exacting love and mercy, and trusting that God's will be done.
Knight Pride!
Congratulations to all of our eighth grade volleyball
teams for earning a place in the annual St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton tournament! All of our teams represented St.
Dominic Catholic Parish and School very well this past
week, as they fought hard as Knights for Christ. Their
sportsmanship and perseverance were something of
which all of us could be very proud.
Children’s Bulletins and Books
Located in both narthexes of the church are children’s bulletins
and crayons geared toward young ones ages 3-7. Feel free to pick
one up on your way into Mass for them to do activities and
coloring during Mass. These activities relate to the readings and
Gospel for that weekend. There is also a basket of children’s
books in the narthexes for them to borrow and put back after
Mass. Please feel free to help yourself in the event they need something to look
at or you forgot to bring something along to engage your little ones!

Coping At Holiday Time-When Someone You Love Has Died
Tuesday, November 11 at 6:30 pm - St. John Vianney, room P201
Special presenter: Martha Furst, Lead Chaplain, Allay Home Hospice
The holidays present a special challenge to those who are grieving. It’s
supposed to be (and is) a time of great joy and happiness, filled with special
gatherings, celebrations and liturgies.
But what do you do when you feel this
huge hole in you? Can you even
participate, and if so, how?
This session will aid you in reflecting
upon the dynamics of grieving and to
“befriend” the loss of a love one in the
midst of your holidays. It will draw upon
our Christian tradition and helpful
pastoral practices to provide a healthy spiritual and emotional foundation for
entering these coming holidays. The session is free and open to all. Registration
appreciated but not required; to register, please call Janlyn Carvalho at

narthexes, beginning on November 15/16 . This user-friendly tool serves as an
excellent resource for connecting our hearts to the deep spiritual meanings of
the Advent Season. These books are available for a free will donation. Please
return the envelopes provided, to the office in the Parish Center.
Do You Like To Sew Or Embroider?
Did you know that we have a small group of ladies who
make baptism garments for our newly baptized babies in the
Parish? We could use a few more people to assist in this
ministry. The pattern is very simple, and the materials are
provided. If you have time and talent that you would like to share, please
contact Betty Kasun, at [email protected] or 262.391.6812. Thank you!
The current trivia committee has
decided this will be their last year.
Interested in taking over? Please
contact Mary Bartolone,
[email protected], to get
involved and to shadow them!
Their first meeting is November 22!
Help to continue one of the most
anticipated events in the parish!

Mass of Remembrance
Wednesday, November 5th — 6:30 p.m.
St. Dominic Catholic Parish
On Wednesday, November 5th, our parish community will gather to remember all those who have
gone before us in faith. We will gather this night to remember them and celebrate their lives.
You are invited to participate with your family in this evening of remembrance.
Mass that evening begins with the Inscription of Names in the Book of the Names of the Dead
at 6:15 p.m. If you would like to remember someone in prayer that night, please inscribe their
name in the Book which will be displayed in the sanctuary.
Throughout the entire month of November, the Book of the Names of the Dead will be displayed
near the baptismal font. Pictures of loved ones may be brought in and displayed in narthexes.
We remember…
we celebrate…
we believe.
PRAYER SERVICE FOR THE VISITATION OF
A LOVED ONE’S GRAVE SITE
Sign of the Cross
Opening Prayer:
Let us pray:
All-powerful God,
Whose mercy is never withheld
From those who call upon you in hope,
Look kindly upon our loved one (s),
Who has/have departed from this life believing in you;
Number him/her/ them among the blessed for evermore.
We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Reading: A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans (Romans 14: 7-9)
None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we live,
we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die, we die as his servants. Both in life and
death, we are the Lord’s. That is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be
Lord of both the dead and the living. The Word of the Lord.
Response: Thanks be to God.
Psalm Response: Psalm 130
Verse 1: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive
To the voice of my pleading.
Refrain:
(Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life)
Verse 2: If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness:
For this we revere you.
Refrain:
(Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life)
Verse 3: My soul is waiting for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the Lord
More than a watchman for daybreak.
Let the watchman count on daybreak
And Israel on the Lord.
Please see other side
Refrain:
(Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life)
Verse 4: Because with the Lord there is mercy
And fullness of redemption,
Israel indeed he will redeem
From all its iniquity.
Refrain:
(Lord, in your steadfast love, give them eternal life)
Decade of the Rosary: The First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection of Jesus
The Lord’s Prayer
Ten Hail Mary’s
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy
of God rest in peace. Amen.
*
*
*
*
*
May the love of God and the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ
Bless and console us
And gently wipe every tear from our eyes:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Give the Gift of Hope
with Smiles for Miles
Bring Your Gifts Oct. 30 – Dec. 10
Last year, the St. Dominic parish and school communities came together and collected 256
shoebox gifts for the children of La Sagrada Familia in the Dominican Republic. This year we are
going to focus on our immigrant friends from Myanmar (Karen, Karenni and Chin) at St. Michael
Parish in Milwaukee.
Gift Ideas
St. Michael has a few specific needs. Here are a few suggestions: school supplies, warm socks,
hats & mittens, toys, dolls, small cars, nail polish, gum or chocolate, crayons and books are all
good gifts. (Please do NOT include war-related toys). We also have a special request this year for
warm sweaters and boots. For more ideas, see the Christmas tree display near the school office.
NO Postage required, it’s free!
In the past, it cost $7 to mail each box. But this year, it is free to deliver the gifts to the children at
St. Michael, ourselves. If you would still like to make a donation, we are accepting boots and
warm sweaters. A cash donation is also appreciated!
Thank You!
We are asking that you use your own shoebox again this year. You will find the boy/girl labels below.
Please cut out the appropriate label and tape it to your box. If you need additional supplies, please
feel free to pick them up at the Christmas tree near the school office. We appreciate all your help
with this important project!
St. Michael Parish, located in
the heart of Milwaukee, is a
unique parish community
serving Hmong, Laotian,
Latino, African American,
American Indian and EuroAmerican parishioners. Their
parish is blessed with a
beautiful diversity of people,
languages and ethnicities.
Their parish, a neighborhood anchor, also faces the
challenge of helping families — many of whom are
immigrant — deal with language issues, poverty and
neighborhood crime. This year, our parish and
school community is “adopting” the children and
families of St. Michael
Parish as the focus of our
Smiles For Miles project.
Thank you, in advance,
for your generosity.
The Christmas Clearing Council (CCC) of Waukesha County has served this
community and its children for 65 years. Last year, 4600 children in need
were served. he CCC helps struggling families, and makes sure that
children are not forgotten during the Christmas season. We need your
help! With another anticipated brutally cold winter, we need to ensure
that every child has a warm, waterproof pair of mittens or gloves.
Throughout the month of November, collection barrels will be located in
both Church entrances. Please be generous, and pick up a couple of pairs
of waterproof mittens and gloves when you’re out shopping. Hats are most
welcome as well. Thank you in advance for warming the hearts and hands
of children in Waukesha County!
