THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA Cont. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK 11/9.14 “The church is saved!” - Jackie Kyle Kull, 89 The church to which Mrs. Kull refers is the parish church of St. Mary Star of the Sea, about which I will have more to say below. First, though, let's take a virtual trip to Rome. In an odd counterpoint to events that unfolded in the Archdiocese of New York this past week, Catholics around the globe are celebrating the Feast of the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran today. One of the most beautiful of the Roman Basilicas, the Lateran is also one of the oldest churches in the world. The original structure was the centerpiece of the Donation of the Emperor Constantine to the Church upon his conversion in 324. Since then it has endured earthquakes and fires, and it has been rebuilt and embellished. One assumes that there will be a Lateran Basilica as long as there is a Bishop of Rome, whose cathedral it is. Now back to the Bronx! St. Mary Star of the Sea, the only church on City Island, has been home to Island Catholics since it began as a mission in the 1850's. Her cry of relief, recorded in The New York Times, was occasioned by the news that Star of the Sea is not one of the parishes to be merged as part of the drastic restructuring of the Archdiocese announced by Cardinal Dolan last Sunday. That massive merging of parishes and closing of churches has been occasioned by a shift in Catholic population, the decline in the number of priests, aging buildings that are often just a couple of blocks from other aging churches. But there is another factor at work here, one discussed by Father George Rutler, administrator of two parishes in Manhattan that were spared like Star of the Sea. "Among the factors is a decline in Catholic life... The primary fact is that most Catholics aren’t practicing the faith. Mass attendance in New York is about 12%. You’ve had about a 50% drop since the Second Vatican Council." As we celebrate the Lateran Basilica's Anniversary this Sunday, we also need to keep in mind events closer to home. Demographic shifts and the willingness of men to dedicate their lives to service in the diocesan priesthood are factors over which we do not have a great deal of control. But the indifference of so many Catholics to the regular practice of the Faith and to the support of the parish will eventually place the future of more Catholic parishes in peril. We need to find creative ways to address that situation. As we celebrate today's feast we pray that, with Mrs. Kull, we can all say, "Our church has been saved." But we will not be able to do so until we persuade inactive Catholics to come home, stand up, and be counted as dedicated and enthusiastic disciples of Jesus who value our Church and our parishes. COLLECTIONS last week amounted to $12,774 for the parish, $3,687 for the All Souls collection and $2,700 for the Little Sisters of the Poor. Thank you very much for your generosity. TIME IS RUNNING OUT! The 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal will soon be over and our parish is still short of our goal by $13,085. The total amount pledged by 331 families is $67,565. If you have not done so, please make a pledge or gift. Help us to get up, up and away into success. Thank you to all those families who have pledged and donated.
