 The Dedication of The Lateran Basilica 
November 9, 2014
“The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob.”
~ Psalm 46:8
 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis 
e-mail: [email protected]
There is a painting located in the
Vatican Museum that is odd, to say the
least. It shows a group of soldiers
laughing
and
talking
amongst
themselves, busy about what they are
doing. The other part of the painting
shows the grim scene of several
Franciscan and Dominican priests hanging from the rafters of
a barn. The work about which the soldiers are busy is
hanging Catholic priests! Why in the world would such a
thing be placed in the Vatican Museum? One can only
surmise that it is there as a grim reminder of the many
persecutions the Church has endured over the centuries and a
picture of the courage of the unknown friars who have given
their lives for Christ and the Church. Sadly, this is a scene
not just reminiscent of four hundred years ago, but something
that is being lived out on a daily basis in parts of the world
today. The news accounts coming out of the Middle East
detailing the savage butchery of Christians by ISIS, forcing
conversion or death, have shocked the civilized world. The
ancient and proud Chaldean Catholic Church of Iraq has
been practically eliminated in a land where it had flourished
for 2,000 years. The Church in Syria and Egypt is equally
hard pressed today. Before the “Arab Spring” a few years
ago Christians in those countries were not only protected but
respected. Now things are 180 degrees different. However,
try as they might, the enemies of Christ will fail in their
attempt to destroy the Church as have the Romans, Cromwell
in Ireland, the Nazis, the Communists and the secularists
before them. Like a blade of grass working its way through
an asphalt pavement the Church of Christ will prevail.
Today the Catholic Church throughout the world
celebrates the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran
in Rome. The Basilica of the Most Holy Savior and St. John
the Baptist, its formal name (it gets its name “Lateran” from
being built on the Lateran Hill), is the very first Christian
Church built anywhere in the world! From the time of
Constantine it has been the Cathedral Church of the Bishop
of Rome, the pope, and holds the place of honor as “Mother
and Head of all the churches in the city and the world.” St.
John Lateran stands imposingly on the Lateran Hill
overlooking the ancient city as a kind of lighthouse to guide
the people of Rome in their devotion to Christ and His
people, the Church. Thus, it is fitting that everywhere
throughout the Catholic World today we celebrate the
dedication of this important basilica from the first centuries
of the Christian Faith.
A church building, however, is not the church. St.
John Lateran – like any parish church – is a symbol of the
presence of Christ in the world and a place of spiritual refuge
for those seeking peace and protection from the turmoil of
secular society. When one enters a church, blesses oneself
with the holy water that recalls our baptism, and sits or
kneels in the quiet presence of the Blessed Sacrament that
person can find a peace unparalleled anywhere else. It is the
place where the community gathers to celebrate baptism,
marriages and reconciliation. It is the place where we come
to celebrate Christ’s intimate presence in the Eucharist. It is
where we come to find the grace and strength to stand strong
against the enemies of Christ, as did those friars in the
painting.
How ready are we to be living examples of
Christian Faith in the modern world, living stones of the
Church of Jesus Christ?

A PRAYER FOR STRENGTH: Eternal, Holy God, I
come to you burdened with worries, fears, doubts and
troubles. Calm and quiet me with peace of mind. Empty
me of the anxiety that disturbs me, of the concerns that
weary my spirit, and weigh heavy on my heart. Loosen
my grip on the disappointments and grievances I hold on
to so tightly. Release me from the pain of past hurts, of
present anger and tension, of future fears. Sometimes it’s
too much for me, Lord, too many demands and problems,
too much sadness, suffering, and stress. Renew me
spiritually and emotionally. Give me new strength, hope,
and confidence. Prepare me to meet the constant
struggles of daily life with a deeper faith and trust in you.
Let your love set me free, for peace, for joy, for grace, for
life, for others. Amen.
VETERAN’S DAY is this coming Tuesday,
November 11. In Canada and the countries of
Europe our Veteran’s Day is akin to Memorial Day
for the U.S. It was on November 11, 1918, that the guns of
World War I fell silent bringing to an end the heretofore
unbelievable slaughter of more than ten million people.
WWI had such a tremendous effect on the people of Europe,
destroying whole governmental systems and turning society
upside down, that it still looms large in memory. In England
everyone wears a red poppy for days leading up to November
11th as a reminder of the tremendous sacrifices made one
hundred years ago on behalf of “King and Country.”
In the United States we should not forget the
tremendous sacrifices made by the millions of men and
women who have served over the years in our Armed Forces
to preserve the rights and liberties we here take for granted.
THANK YOU to all who are Veterans and whom we honor
on Tuesday. Your dedication and sacrifice is not forgotten.
Not only do we acknowledge you but we honor you and
thank you for your service.
WELCOME BACK Fr. John Puodziunas, O.F.M, who will
be with us for a few days this week (and possibly next
weekend) as he conducts some business for his order (and
sneaks in a few days of R & R). Fr. John, it’s always great to
have you with us!

A PRAYER FOR VETERANS: "Proud of our nation,
they answered her call - defending the freedom and safety of
all. On land or on sea, or in aircraft high above, they went
out of duty and honor and love. But however they served,
Lord, wherever they went, please bless them and help them to
know what it meant! And help us thank them on Veteran's
Day - for we owe them far more that we ever could say."
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: For several
weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of
forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in this
category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The
other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with
penance. The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition
for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will
pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them
with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other
rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was
therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus
often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of
forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly,
however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick
was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or
even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the second
century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should
be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the
Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the
Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained
faithful to bring home was relatively shortlived.

We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers in the
bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list up-to-date.
Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off the list and,
as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will list names for
prayer requests for one month. After the last Sunday of the month the
names on the list will be taken off and a new prayer request list will be
published the first Sunday of the month. If someone wishes to have a
name remembered again, the name must be re-submitted to the office.
This will assure that we keep an up-to-date and more readable list.

meets every Tuesday consecutively ending on Tuesday,
March 31, 2015. One must contact the facilitator in order
to take part in this great opportunity to expand your prayer
life and draw closer to God. There are two groups:

WHAT IS “AMAZON SMILE?” Amazon
Smile is a simple and automatic way for you
to support San Rafael Parish every time you
shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at
www.smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the
same products, same prices, same service, with the added
bonus that Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your
eligible AmazonSmile purchases to San Rafael whenever
you shop on AmazonSmile.
How do I shop at AmazonSmile? Simply go to
www.smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your
computer or mobile device.
How do I select to support San Rafael? On your first
visit to AmazonSmile, you need to select San Rafael to
receive donations from eligible purchases before you
begin shopping. It will remember your selection, then
every eligible purchase you make on AmazonSmile will
result in a donation to San Rafael.
Can I use my existing Amazon account? Yes, your
shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry and
other account settings are also the same.
Please support San Rafael Parish by starting your
shopping at www.smile.amazon.com. Thank you!

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR
PARISH? If so, please take the time
to register and let us know you’re here.
Parish registration forms can be found
in the vestibule of the church. You can fill one out and
drop in the box provided or mail it in or bring it by the
office yourself or drop it in the offering basket. By the
way – THANKS for joining us! We’re awfully glad
you’re here!
“San Rafael Catholic Church” We are up to 238 followers!
ELECTRONIC GIVING: Throughout
the year, many of you already support the
congregation with your time, talent and
financial contributions but greater participation is always
welcome. We encourage you to look into our electronic
giving program. It takes just a few minutes to setup a
recurring giving plan. Visit the church website –
www.sanrafaelparish.org - and locate the donation link
or, if you prefer, complete a paper authorization form by
coming in to the parish office.
REMEMBER YOUR PARISH IN
YOUR WILL. The work our parish
accomplishes continues through the
thoughtfulness of our parishioners who remember us in
bequests and wills. Please consider remembering the
parish in your bequest and will. The bequest should be
listed as a beneficiary, “Pastor of San Rafael Parish of
San Diego, a Corporation Sole. Federal ID #273859305.” Long after a faithful Christian has departed
this life, that person’s name and generosity can be
continued through the religious education program,
outreach to the poor, building fund, youth ministry or any
other number of worthy parish causes by remembering
San Rafael Parish in the individual’s will or trust. This
would truly be a lasting legacy for anyone!
Thank you to our wonderful bulletin advertisers!
Please remember to thank them for
their support of the parish by patronizing
their businesses whenever possible.
