Page 3 The Commemoration of All The Faithful Departed "I will not reject anyone who comes to me." Today, as we remember the faithful departed, we can rejoice in these words from Jesus. He promises that he will welcome those who come to him. He is so anxious to embrace us! As the catechism puts it, "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation" (CCC §1030). Jesus' whole message here is important. Eternal salvation is available to all, but it does involve a level of participation on our part. "Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life," Jesus says in today's Gospel. When it's authentic, of course, this belief is more than mere lip service. Understanding that Jesus is our savior and our God is one thing. Coming to him is another; it takes belief to the next level of personal commitment. This involves choices, decisions, and actions. Coming to Jesus means being near him-through a spiritual life that involves a real relationship with himas well as being focused on him by charting our life's course in the light of faith. This is what we strive to do during the ups and downs of this life. But it isn't always easy. Even as faithful Christians we often fall short of perfect cooperation with God. But this is not cause for despair! Today we remember that even Christians who die still "imperfectly purified" can ultimately share the blessing of heaven. We pray for these souls in purgatory to come closer and closer to perfect union with the Lord. And meanwhile, we strive to increase our own union with Christ in the hopes of sharing eternity with him and with the whole communion of saints, including our loved ones who have gone before us in faith. c lease pray for the sick of our parish... Without Catholic Charities, I would not physically be where I am now. I’m happy. I have a feeling of belonging.” Catholic Charities USA and its member agencies are ready to respond whenever natural or man-made disasters strike. To learn more, please visit: www.CatholicCharitiesUSA .org. Vocations Committee Give Us Holy Priests, O Lord! National Vocation Awareness Week is here, November 2- 9. The Parish Vocation Committee is committed to offer all helpful material to make our celebration a successful one. For this purpose, you will find a list of prayer cards, booklets, wristbands for the children at each entrance of the Church to spread Jesus’s message to pray that God send Apostles to His Church. Prayers for Vocations are the central theme of the week. Please accept a prayer to use for future days. Page 4 The Pastor’s Page SAFELY IN THE HANDS OF GOD The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. (Wis 3:1-3) Every coin has two sides, commonly called “heads” and “tails”. Yet, whether a coin lands on heads or tails, it is still the coin. A dime is a dime whether or not it lands on heads or tails. If a dime lands on heads nine times out of ten, the one time that it lands on tails, it’s still a dime. Today, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. It is the other side of a very important coin. Yesterday, we celebrated the Feast of All Saints. However, all the saints and all the souls are part of the same “coin”: all the redeemed. God made us in His immortal image and likeness. He loved us into existence. He cared so much about us that He sent us His only Son so that we might be set free from the corruption of sin and death. His Son loved us so much that He died on the cross for us. In that, we were redeemed. Yesterday, on the Feast of All Saints, we celebrated those men and women who lived exemplary lives and who the Church holds up as models of virtue. They inspire us and help us to live our lives better. Today, the Feast of All Souls reminds us of all those who have gone before us, including our mothers and fathers, our husbands and wives, our brothers and sisters, our daughters and sons, our nephews and nieces, our relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. All the people who died are in need of prayer so that they make their final destination: heaven. Some of those who have died are already there. Others may be in purgatory. It is for them that we pray, that they reach the full glories of heaven soon. The celebration of the saints and the souls both remind us that we have been redeemed. We give thanks to God for that great gift! We fondly remember all of those whom we have lost. May God bless them and give them peace! FAITH ACTION: Remember the faithful departed in your prayers today. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Our school students have been working very hard on this year’s fall musical: Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr. We hope you can join us Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, November 20-22 at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Come and bid your cares goodbye... You can fly, you can fly, you can fly! Coming sooner than you would think, November 23-25 are the dates for our annual Forty Hours devotions. Each morning, after the last Mass, the Eucharist will be left exposed on the altar in the church for adoration. It is very important that the Eucharistic Lord exposed on the altar never be left unattended. Please try to come some time during the day to dwell in the presence of the Lord as well as to pray before the Lord. Each evening, at 7:00 p.m., we will have services that include a talk from our Forty Hours presenter. The speaker at this year’s Forty Hours will be Fr. Ed Tlucek, OFM, the pastor of Holy Name Church in Cedar Lake. Fr. Tlucek has a wit and a wisdom that appeals to many people and I am confident that you will go home each evening with a renewed sense of the wonder and glory of God. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE The rain was pouring and there was a huge puddle in front of the local restaurant. A ragged old man was standing there with a rod and hanging a string into the puddle. A curious passerby came over to him and asked what he was doing. “Fishing,” the old man said simply. “Poor old fool,” the man thought and he invited the ragged old man to go into the restaurant for a cup of hot coffee. Just the thing, he thought, to cheer the man and warm him up from the rain and cold. As he felt he should start some conversation while they were drinking their coffee, the gentleman asked, “And how many have you caught?” “You’re the third,” the old man answered with a grin. Eternal Rest grant to them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
