Dennis e-mail: [email protected] “If it bleeds it reads” is a comment frequently heard about what is reported by the media. Our American Right of Freedom of the Press, enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution, allows anyone to say almost anything (except shouting “fire!” in a crowded theater), with or without facts, to back it up. Religion usually gets a particularly haphazard reporting as was seen in the news reports of the recently completed Synod on the Family in Rome. “If it bleeds it reads” could be the description here. From what was reported one would think that the Pope and the Bishops of the Synod were ready to turn Catholic moral teaching upside down as regards to marriage, divorce, annulments, communion for those married outside the Church and the way homosexuals are received and given recognition in the Church. Too many people joined in the cacophony and not all knew what they were talking about, getting their information from the same place everyone else got theirs; the secular media. The Final Document of the Synod, however, gives a clear and concise reporting of what was actually said. This particular Synod (and advisory consultation of bishops to the pope on a given topic, given at fixed times) was called simply to discuss matters that were of important concern to the Catholic Church throughout the world. More questions were raised than answered and it faced the pastoral realities that many grapple with today. The media, of course, dealt with the “hot” topics under discussion as if everything was going to change right away. (Side note: When has that ever happened? Why do you think Rome is called “The Eternal City?” It takes forever to get anything done!). Consequently, panicked and frightened Catholics who thought the rug was being pulled out from under them ran around like Chicken Little crying “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Will the Church’s position on certain matters change? That’s a good question and no one has the answer to that right now. However, the very fact that the Synod was called to deal with the issues it did shows a pastoral sensitivity to the needs of God’s people which provides a great deal of hope for many. Most remarkable of all of this, though, is the way some people have begun to look askance at the Holy Father as if he is out to destroy the long held teachings of the Church. Nothing could be further from the truth! If anything, Pope Francis is simply providing good stewardship for the Church of Christ. Today’s scriptures remind us some of the foundational elements of our Faith. Proverbs is not just about “a good wife” but about mutual loyalty and fidelity to be found in marriage. First Thessalonians and the Gospel, like a splash of cold water, remind us that this life is mortal and that we must live it preparing for immortality. God has given us The Church, the People of God, to be a source of strength, love and grace for all people everywhere. If this means that the Church’s way of doing things must at times be reviewed and (God forbid!) changed, so be it. It’s God’s Church, not ours. We are called to be His faithful disciples and to put up with the inconvenient and difficult as well as the comfortable and easy. A good test of what is reported in either secular or religious press is this: Is what is being reported enhancing or detracting from the Church of Christ, under the leadership of the Pope, the Vicar of Christ? Our faith will lead us to the right answer. CONGRATULATIONS to Jessica Schmuttermair who recently received an Award of Recognition from the San Diego Knights of Columbus for her outstanding service over the years as an Altar Server here at San Rafael! Jessica received a beautiful certificate and plaque and a check in the amount of $50.00 for her dedication! SERRA VOCATION THOUGHT But how can they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear of Him unless there is someone to preach? (Romans 10:14). What a beautiful example of simple logic by St. Paul, and how true it is still today! If we do not have the priests, deacons and vowed religious to preach, teach and guide us who already believe, how can we continue to cling to Him in ever fuller unity? And what of those who do not know God at all? Pray every day for vocations in abundance. Peter and Paul; St. Rose Philippine Duchesne The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary St. Cecilia TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them. Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone understood as being an essential part of ~ Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. penance. We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers in the bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list up-to-date. Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will list names for prayer requests for one month. After the last Sunday of the month the names on the list will be taken off and a new prayer request list will be published the first Sunday of the month. If someone wishes to have a name remembered again, the name must be re-submitted to the office. This will assure that we keep an upto-date and more readable list. Joe’s “children” this Christmas. Your generosity collected nineteen 30gallon black plastic bags filled to the brim! We had to split most of the bags since we were unable to lift them in order to deliver them to Fr. Joe’s Village. It was interesting how equally the items covered ladies, men and children’s needs. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous help. We never could have achieved such a feat without you! Our regular monthly meeting will be held this Monday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room J of the Pastoral Center. San Rafael has been asked by Interfaith Shelter Network to be the first congregation in the 2014-2015 programs. Our guests will arrive on Saturday, December 6, and depart our loving care on Saturday, December 20. That day they transfer to our friends at Temple Adat Shalom. All of our guests get vetted through Interfaith Community Services in Escondido. If you missed signing up last weekend after Mass, you may still contact either coordinator Joe Larkin by emailing [email protected] or Pat Flynn at [email protected] for further details. YOU ARE INVITED to answer Pope Francis’ call for a sustained campaign of “Prayer and Action” to combat hunger around the globe. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $5,000 in order to purchase and prepare 10,000 meals for starving and vulnerable children, women and men in the impoverished West African country of Burkina Faso. There will be a donation drive after each Mass this weekend, November 15-16. Then on Saturday, January 17, join your fellow parishioners in our parish hall for a meal packing event sponsored by San Rafael’s St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Relief Services. A portion of the money raised also helps those receiving the meals you packaged to learn skills, as taught by Catholic Relief Services, to earn an income and become economically independent. Please prayerfully consider donating to and/or participating in the meal packaging event. Look for the Helping Hands/CRS donation board at the front entrance.
