THE BASILICA OF ST. JOHN LATERAN IS THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ROME. ACCORDING
TO AN INSCRIPTION IN THE BASILICA IT BECAME THE MOTHER CHURCH AND THE HEAD
OF ALL CHURCHES IN ROME AND ALL THE WORLD. IT IS HONORED AS THE EPISCOPAL
SEAT OF THE POPE AS BISHOP OF ROME, AND THAT IS WHY WE CELEBRATE THE DEDICATION OF THIS BASILICA TODAY.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Suicide is a tragedy because God’s plan is rejected in the act. It is as if we were to read a
book and stop midway, never allowing the story to unfold. This past week the tragic suicide
of Brittany Maynard, 29, was widely publicized. I saw a video in which she explained her
intentions to end her life. Her reasoning lacked the perspective of eternity. Yes, there is
suffering in this world and many times things do not go as we would have them. This is part
of the road to Heaven. Our Lord tells us to pick up our cross in order to follow Him. One of the
most difficult prayers to pray is, “Father, not my will, but Thy will be done.” This is the prayer
Jesus Christ prayed in His agony in the garden. God is the creator and calls the shots, not us.
A Vatican official condemned the assisted suicide action as "wicked." The woman was suffering from brain cancer.
"We do not judge the individuals but the act itself is to be condemned," said Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, the bishop
who heads the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, a semi-autonomous Church think tank which studies ethical
issues. "This is where the error lies: to commit suicide is not a good thing, it is a wicked thing because it is saying no
both to one's own life and to everything which signifies respect for our mission in this world and towards those closest to us."
Some may think, “I don’t want to suffer anymore and therefore I will end my life.” It must also be remembered, when
we suffer it gives others an opportunity to practice charity. This is a point the Servant of God, Fr. John Hardon, as well
as Bl. Mother Teresa emphasized. Only by practicing mercy, in some degree, will we receive God’s mercy. Therefore,
God provides opportunities to exercise charity towards our neighbor. We may not like our suffering but God may be
using it to help others to grow spiritually.
God bless you abundantly through Mary,
Fr. Parker
Fr. James Parker, Pastor of Holy Cross Church, invites you to participate in our
The ‘One Thing’ Is Three study by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC
The ‘One Thing’ Is Three, written by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, is a study of Catholic theology written for anyone who
wants to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the great mysteries of the faith. This study is designed so anyone
can dive deeper in their faith and understanding, even those of you who are very busy. The ‘One Thing’ Is Three is written
in two parts. First, a crash course in Catholic theology, and second, a study of the opportunities to share and live the works
of mercy. Insights, not only from St. Ignatius Loyola, but also St. Louis de Montfort, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Maria
Faustina, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. John Paul II. In the words of Peter Kreeft, Ph.D. this study is, “…dangerous. It
brims with wisdom and wonder, and with enthusiastic and infectious joy.” Bishop David Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay, WI,
says, “I highly recommend this book (study) for anyone who loves the Church and seeks a deeper understanding of her
teachings.”
You can read the book on your own in as little as a week, or you can take advantage of the opportunity to share the journey
with a group over the course of ten weeks. See the registration forms in the narthex or on the parish website for more information and to sign up. We will be taking registration forms through December 1st for this third Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC,
study. Don't Miss Out!

Spiritual Adoption Month 3 - I am quite active. Even
though my mother cannot feel me yet, I can kick and flip
around in my safe little world. I can move my eyes but
my eyelids are closed. My cartilage is changing to bone.
I can suck my thumb and I hiccup when I swallow amniotic fluid. I am now three inches long and can hear outside noises. I can close my fingers around an object and
I can squint, frown and smile. I am starting to react to
my environment and although I can already feel sensations like pain, I really hope things stay the same--quiet,
peaceful, and warm.

The mission of the Enriching Lives Ministry is twofold. First, to
www.holycross-batavia.org/outreach/elm
spiritually and emotionally enrich the lives of the elderly, homebound,
disabled, sick, and any other people needing companionship, love
and/or other assistance through Jesus’ boundless love for all people by providing friendship, caring assistance, enjoyable times, spiritual and
social fellowship, transportation to church and personal functions, other assistance … and love to these people on a long-term basis. Second, to
connect those who want to help people with those who need assistance.
A BIG THANK yOU TO OUR PARISH CHILDREN & THEIR LEADERS by Kay DiVerde (Leader of Card Sending in our ministry)...A big thank you goes
out to Susan Mertka and the American Heritage Girls, and also to Doris Trout and the Holy Cross Middle School students for reaching out to others. These very giving groups reached out to our ministry, and are sending cards/letters once a month to the elderly and homebound in our community. What an excellent lesson to teach these young people! Thank you for your efforts and all the other people and children who make lonely
seniors’ lives a bit happier.
WE ARE SHORT ENTERTAINERS TO BRIGHTEN UP LONELy SENIOR’S LIvES...We’re starting up entertaining … SLOWLY because we don’t have
enough entertainers. Many people are not aware of the lonely life most seniors at senior residences live. Many get very few or no visits from
family members or others. A major goal of this ministry is to help this situation by visiting, sending cards, providing transportation and entertaining God’s seniors and, with our actions, hopefully bring these people closer to God. We’re asking you to help with entertaining these people.
If you or your children can sing, dance, play an instrument, tell jokes or whatever … WE NEED YOU. You don’t need to be excellent or even very
good at what you do. They just love seeing people, especially children, and joining in the fun. When you see their smiling faces you’ll know you
are doing God’s work. Please contact the ministry if you are interested or simply have questions. Monica Negrete is doing a fantastic job restarting this part of our ministry … but she really needs your help.

We are all called to holiness. Manny people define
holiness as the absence of sin. Buut that is a shallow
definition when we compare it to thee grace and love of
God that He poured out to us in Hiss Son. The Second
Person of the Trinity became flesh soo that we might truly
understand what it really meanns to be holy.

“God became man so that man could become God.”
It sounds like heresy, but really it’s
i a quote from
St. Athanasius. The Catechism refers to this
when it tells us that the Word became
b
flesh
so that we might “partake in the divine nature.”
What that means is that wee are truly
sons and daughters of God, and our
o whole identity
should be based on that miraaculous fact.
