th 18th Annual National Conference of Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) th th 14 -16 Nov. 2014 Qualitative Research: A Step towards Theory Construction & Development Outcome Categories/ Patterns Assumptions Code Definition Concepts Phenomenon Choithram College of Nursing, Manik Bagh Road, Indore (M.P.) Email: [email protected], Website: http://www.nrsindia.org Background Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) is a professional body established in 1987 for the promotion of nursing research in India. NRSI has made remarkable progress in the past 3 decades under the leadership of various nurse leaders. The objectives of NRSI are to support the development of nursing research activities, provide evidence based nursing care, provide a platform to nurse scientists to exchange views on nursing research and disseminate research findings for utilization in the field of health care. This has been materialized through the cooperative and collective participation of its members in organizing regular conferences, research activities and publishing the Journal of NRSI. Choithram College of Nursing Choithram College of Nursing established in 1982 has proved to be the edifice of success adding new programs and grooming excellent clinical nurse practitioners and world-class nursing faculty. Education, Service and Research are three major areas to which the college has committed itself. To cope up with the challenges of changes taking place in the health system, the college provides its students world class education, combining the latest global trends and techniques with the rich old cultural heritage of Yoga in nursing education. The college envisions to empower nursing profession through an integrated education, holistic health care services and clinical research. “Qualitative Research: A step towards theory construction and development” Qualitative research is a vast and complex area of research methodology. With the belief that, researchers need to examine all parts of realities, subjective reality as well as objective counterpart, this conference aims to introduce you to the idea of qualitative research and how it is related to quantitative research. Researchers should acknowledge 'knowing' in the subjective sense and value it too, so that scientific knowledge will represent the views of people who experience life. The early phenomenologists believed that the only reality was one, which is perceived. Perception is not objective, rather perception is a way of observing and processing those things that are present to the self within the context of one's lived experience. The internalization of what becomes 'known' as belief system comes from perception and construction of what is real for the individual. Mats Alvesson and Dan Karreman, social constructionist researchers, take a novel approach to tell us how qualitative research can impact theory development. They suggest researchers to take an in-depth and incisive approach towards social situations by taking a reflective and interpretive approach towards their empirical material to create results that can challenge established theory and thus inspire novel lines of theory development. Qualitative methods are primarily inductive, in contrast to the deductive methods of experimental science. Thus, induction negotiates the relationship between empirical reality and its theorization, in addition to the production and validation of knowledge. One of the benefits of nursing theory and theory guided practice (and reflective practice guided theory) is that it helps clinicians and scholars alike to return to considering the ontological foundation of their practice. This ontological view assists in examining and critiquing basic values and premises about how one views person, humanity, environment, relationship, caring-healing, health and illness, suffering and wholeness. It helps one to examine and re-examine the role and purpose of nursing. Sub-themes: Processes in qualitative research Translation of qualitative research into theory generation. Transferring nursing knowledge gained through qualitative research into nursing education and practice. Aim of the Conference: The primary aim of the conference is return to ontological foundation of nursing by developing an insight about qualitative research. Objectives: Through the deliberations of NRSICON14, we intend to….. Appreciate the need for qualitative research in India. Promote qualitative research as a step to theory building. Provide challenge to validate application of existing theories in the present era and geographical context. Nurture fellowship among nurse scientists in the area of nursing research.
