Worship in November November 2 – All Saints Sunday Worship with Holy Communion Sermon: “Heirs of Hope” Scripture: Ephesians 1:11-25 November 9 – New Members Sunday Sermon: “Welcoming Our Neighbor: If you Choose...” Scripture: Mark 1:40-45, Luke 10: 26-27 November 16 Sermon: “Will You Be My Neighbor?” Scripture: Luke 10:1-10, Matthew 28;18-20 November 23 – Christ the King / Thanksgiving Sermon: “The Learning Curve of Gratitude” Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:7-18 November 30 – 1st Sunday of Advent November Worship Notes The 1st Sunday in November we remember the Saints, those who have passed into the Church Triumphant in the last year. And then the 4th Sunday, we celebrate Thanksgiving in a spirit of gratitude. For the two Sundays in between, the worship and sermon emphasis will be on “Welcoming our Neighbor”, with our starting place: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” It’s interesting to note that the initial command to love your neighbor in the Old Testament is in the book of Leviticus, where it’s written, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:18. That’s where it all started. As we welcome our neighbor, the Church can be a school for love: the congregation is the classroom where people learn from one another ho to love. Friends In Deed Gala to Celebrate 120th Year Wednesday, November 5 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friends In Deed is throwing a party November 5 at historic Castle Green to celebrate 120 years of bringing help and hope to vulnerable and at-risk residents of Pasadena and the greater San Gabriel Valley. The theme “That’s What Friends are For” describes the mission and spirit of this respected organization founded in 1894, at about the same time as the Rose Parade. To exemplify its role of caring put into action, Friends In Deed will honor the Rev. Inman Moore for his decades of loyal support and civil rights leadership, and the Rev. George Regas for his significant work to promote peace and justice at home and nationally. Friends known for civic activism will present a lively revue, “A Walk Through History,” at the 120th celebration, which also will offer food, music and auctions. Fritz Coleman, stand-up comic and KNBC weatherman, will host the event on November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., at Castle Green, 99 S. Raymond Ave. Tickets are $120. For more information, go to FriendsinDeedpas.org or call (626) 797-2402 Monday through Thursday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. November 2014 Planning For the Future When I start serving a new Church, I find it helpful to read files about past activities. Coming in new, expected to lead, I want to learn about patterns of past activities, thoughts, expectations, mission goals and objectives. I look at myself as a weaver. How do I take the “yarn” of the already-begun projects, hopes and dreams and continuing weaving them into the emerging vision for the Church? There have been EXCELLENT planning retreats and meetings held over a number of years. Many great ideas for building up and expanding the ministries of this congregation have been presented. We are not short on ideas! I think what we need is some focused alignment. EVERYBODY has to get engaged and feel invested in the process. Each of us has our own unique strengths and abilities. Are we ready? At the planning retreat in early September, participants discerned these mission and ministry goals: 1) Community Building Activities and practices to strengthen, unity and deepen our relationships with each other as the Body of Christ. 2) Welcoming New People Strengthen our congregation’s welcome to new people: Radical Hospitality. Our newly established Evangelism Committee will take the lead. 3) Outreach Programs for Younger Families Offer short-term classes, one time events with community partners for: families with special needs, sponsor marriage enrichment classes, fitness/wellness programs, Financial Peace University. Be ready with “on call” nursery/preschool teachers for the Sunday worship hour. Are we ready? I spoke with Rev. Nicole Reilley, our Annual Conference Director of New Ministries, and she offered some suggestions about how we can move confidently towards achieving our goals as a congregation. Nicole suggested that we use the Readiness 360 tool to help us assess where we are now and how we can best move forward. To activate this important tool, we need to get as many people as possible in our congregation to fill out an online survey which is customized for our Church. The report generated by the survey helps us know where to start, so that any new vision goal or ministry becomes more achievable. By engaging the entire congregation, we discover where the “sticky points” are so that we can avoid the frustration of getting stuck and not being able to move forward. We want to focus on our strengths and skills as the starting point. Rev. Reilly recommended that we work on the online survey and she will then help us to develop an action plan. Online surveys sound difficult to you? We will plan on having Sunday morning computer assistance following worship. For more information, visit Readiness360.org. Pastor Linda Interact Club Helps Family Promise The Sierra Madre Interact Club joined members of the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church to prepare and serve dinner to homeless families in the Family Promise support program. For the past 9 plus years Poinsettias have been ordered from Albertson’s market across the street from the church. Albertson’s is closing and there goes our flowers for the holidays. Albertson’s would not charge us tax and would deliver them free of charge I was going to send a shout out for help when Rich Snyder came across with help. He told me we can get our poinsettias through Pasadena High School for $10 each. Best part is Rich will deliver them to the church. Thanks so much for your help with this Rich!
