FIRST READING (NLT) Zephaniah 1:7-16 7 Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD, for the awesome day of the LORD’s judgment is near. The LORD has prepared his people for a great slaughter and has chosen their executioners. 8 “On that day of judgment,” says the LORD, “I will punish the leaders and princes of Judah and all those following pagan customs. 9 Yes, I will punish those who participate in pagan worship ceremonies, and those who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit. 10 “On that day,” says the LORD, “a cry of alarm will come from the Fish Gate and echo throughout the New Quarter of the city. And a great crash will sound from the hills. 11 Wail in sorrow, all you who live in the market area, for all the merchants and traders will be destroyed. 12 “I will search with lanterns in Jerusalem’s darkest corners to punish those who sit complacent in their sins. They think the LORD will do nothing to them, either good or bad. 13 So their property will be plundered, their homes will be ransacked. They will build new homes but never live in them. They will plant vineyards but never drink wine from them. 14 “That terrible day of the LORD is near. Swiftly it comes— a day of bitter tears, a day when even strong men will cry out. 15 It will be a day when the LORD’s anger is poured out— a day of terrible distress and anguish, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, 16 a day of trumpet calls and battle cries. Down go the walled cities and the strongest battlements! R: This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God EPISTLE (NLT) 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. 2 For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. 3 When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape. 4 But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. 5 For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. 6 So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. 7 Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk. 8 But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. 9 For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. 10 Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. R: This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God P: HOLY GOSPEL (NLT) Matthew 25:14-30 14 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. 15 He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last— dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. 16 “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. 17 The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. 18 But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money. 19 “After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. 20 The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’ 21 “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ 22 “The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.’ 23 “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ 24 “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’ 26 “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, 27 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. 30 Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ R: This is the Gospel of the Lord C: Praise To You, O Christ St. Mark Lutheran Church Upcoming events November 16, 2014-November 29, 2014 SUN-Nov. 16 9:15 Adult Bible & Sunday School 9:15 Sunday School 10:30 Worship 4:00 ACES Youth Rock Climbing event 5:30 LEGO Club SIGN deadline (newsletter) 10:00 Membership class MON-Nov. 17 SUN-Nov. 23 9:15 Adult Bible Class 9:15 Sunday School 10:30 Worship 5:00 ACES Youth MON-Nov. 24 6:00 Drop & Dash event TUES-Nov. 18 7:00 Cub Scouts TUES-Nov. 25 9:30 Two year old play group 7:00 Cub Scouts WED-Nov. 19 12:15 O.W.L.S. @ Roman Café 5:30 Volleyball Camp 6:30 Juniors Girl Scouts (closed group) 7:00 Choir 7:00 Confirmation class 8:00 Computer Tech meeting WED-Nov. 26 5:30 Volleyball Camp 7:00 Choir THURS-Nov. 20 No Prayer Group 10:30 Dorcas Quilting 6:30 Constitution meeting THURS-Nov. 27 No Prayer Group 10:00 Worship Office Closed/No Pre-K FRI-Nov. 28 Office Closed/No Pre-K SAT-Nov. 29 5:00 Worship/Advent FRI-Nov. 21 SAT-Nov. 22 4:30 EPIC “Italian Night” 5:00 Worship Drop and Dash Need a couple hours to run errands...alone?
