and pleasant people. It will give us immense happiness and pride to have you with us for the 40th
Prof.B.Hanumaiah Memorial National Surgical Education Program organized by our Surgical
Society of Bangalore & ASI city Chapter (SSBASICC). We wish you a pleasant stay in the city
and to experience the rich academic atmosphere during the CSEP
The fact that this CSEP is being conducted for the last 40 years successfully without a break
itself speaks volumes about the popularity of this event. This teaching program is keenly sought
after by the postgraduates from all over India with an average attendance of 350 students from
more than 90 medical colleges. The faculty are experts in their field and have decades of post
graduate teaching experience. We have invited faculty from medical colleges in the neighboring
states, and also from different institutions in Karnataka. The experts from the city continue to
contribute immensely to the success of this program.
We have carefully chosen both the faculty and the clinical material for your benefit. The
surgical faculty from different medical colleges of the city will demonstrate to you, a wide range of
cases and discuss them in association with expert external faculty. The guest lectures are selected
from previous years' question papers and they are the most commonly asked topics in the
examinations. There will be in addition interactive sessions with experts and operative procedure
sessions. The knowledge that you acquire during the CSEP will help you not only to face the
exams but also to be a good surgeon.
Please take active part in clinical discussions and do not hesitate to ask questions; clarify all
your doubts here. Our experienced and renowned anchors Dr.Anjanappa T.H and Dr.
Sreevathsa M.R are your spokespersons and you can approach them without hesitation or fear
for any clarifications. The Karnataka State level surgery quiz, by Dr. Rajan C.S will be 19th
Wednesday Nov 2014. All current surgical post graduate students, MS and DNB, are eligible to
participate in the prelims. The winning team (Pair) will be sponsored by KSC-ASI to represent
Karnataka at the Grand National Surgical Quiz during ASICON 2014 at Hyderabad, between
25th and 30th Dec 2014. The preliminary round will on 19th Nov 2014 at 1.00 pm for all
participating teams. This consists of written answer for 30 minutes and those qualified will go
through the Final round in the evening.

PROF. B. HANUMAIAH
Dr. Hanumaiah was born on 1/10/1920 at
Nelamangala taluk. He completed his secondary
education in Magadi town following which he was
encouraged by the government to carry on with his
studies in medicine. He secured 1st rank in LMP
conducted by the Medical School of Mysore state in
1941.
In 1946 he recived Freemason Golden jubilee prize
from His Highness Sri Jayachamarajendre Wodeyer
the maharaja of Mysore for having secured first rank
in MBBS. He was deputed by the govenment to
United Kingdom for higher studies in Surgery in
1953. He cleared FRCS from Edinburgh in first
attempt in 1955. On his return he was appointed as
resident medical officer at Victoria Hospital and thus
begon his long and illustrious career. He served as
Associate professor of surgery at Bangalore Medical
College in 1958 and was later moved to Mysore as
professor of surgery. In 1966 he returned to
Bangalore as professor of surgery and later on
became the director of postgraduate studies in 1971.
He become the dean and principal of
PostgraduateInstitute of Bowring Lady Curzon
Hospital and also Ex Officio superintendent of the
hospital.
He was the member of senate and academic council
of university of Bangalore. Chairmen, Board of
Examination, Head of the depoartment of surgery
Bangalore Medical College till his retairment in 1987
he was conferred Rajyothsava award by the Govt of
Karnataka. He also received Doctors Day award by
the Indian Medical Association Bangalore
He attained heavenly adobe on 7/3/1995

Dr.C.R.Ballal M.S., F.A.I.S.
Born on 6-5-37. at Mangalore, had early education at Christian
High School, Udupi and St. Aloysius College Mangalore.
M.B.B.S. from K.M.C.Manipal, Mangalore.(1955 to1960).
1st rank in the Karnataka University in the First, Second and Final
M.B.B.S., examinations. Recipient of the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Gold
Medal for the best out going student of the batch for the year 1960.
M.S. Gen.Surgery , Karnataka University 1964. Belonging to the
very First Batch of Post Graduates to have completed their studies
in the state, then called Mysore.
Joined K.M.C.Mangalore as Reader in Surgery in March 1964 and worked for 33 years.
Was the H.O.D,and Director of P.G.Studies for 8 years. Outstanding Alumnus Award by the
Manipal University and K.M.C. during Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations of the
college. Chairman of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations Committee of M. S. Gen. Surgery of
K.M.C. mangalore in Dec. 2013.
Joined K.S.Hegde Medical College in Dec !998 , and presently working as Prof Emeritus.
Teaching Faculty for C.M.E. programmes conducted by most medical colleges in the states
of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu, for four decades. Examiner for M.B.B.S. and M.S.
Examinations conducted by most colleges in South India .
Past Chairman, Karnataka State unit of the Association of Surgeons of India.
Quiz Master for six years at the National Level Quiz conducted by A.S.I. for post graduates.

Dr. M. AUTHIKESHAVALU
Dr. Muniswamy Authikeshavalu was born on 16th
August 1906 at Bangalore After completing a course
in LMP he went on to do MBBS from Madras
University where he was the best outgoing student.
He was deputed to Canada where he obtained his
fellowship (FRCS) He worked in Mayo clinic USA
with a special interest in intestinal abstruction. On
return to India in 1944 joined Victoria Hospital in
1956. He became the principal and Dean of
Bangalore Medical College and also the
postgraduate examiner. He is known for his
Marathan Teaching sessions. He pioneered work on
“Peptic Ulcer Treatment - Truncal Vagogomy and
Gastro Jejunostomy”. He was well known for this.
His original research work is still preserved at Mayo
Clinic. He retired in 1967 joined CSI hospital but
continued to teach students from St. Johns Medical
College. He was married to Achamma and has two
sons and one daughter.
He succumbed to cancer of stomach in 1973.

Open surgery skills session: orientation to various surgery instruments,
asepsis, how to use the sharp equipments safely, knot tying, suturing, bowel
anastamosis and other exercises.
Endo Trainers Session: Basic laparoscopic training including various
instruments, orientation to camera and monitor, multiple hand eye
coordination exercises, extra corporeal knotting and if possible intra
corporeal suturing.
