Indelible times spent as a child with her father motivated Rose Rigley’s exhibition of new work, Letters to
my Father. In the upstairs Loft Space, Cairns Regional Gallery presents exhibitions by local artists
building their profile. Rigley’s thoughtful constructions recalling the moments and incidentals that pass
between two or more members in any family are installed in the Loft from October 10. Poignantly, it is
more than 20 years since Rigley’s father passed away but she draws on the emotions expressed in an
eloquent letter she recently composed to him, conveying her love, gratitude and the imponderable
dimensions of memories. The seven series of works that comprise the exhibition are symbolic of a
conversation with Rigley’s father. They represent words that were left unspoken and exchanges that were
never concluded. Cairns Regional Gallery’s Loft Space with an open invitation to visitors to attend.

Sea Shepherd Major Fundraising Event - This event is part of the National Ocean Defence Fundraising
Tour being undertaken by Sea Shepherd Australia this summer. Sea Shepherd welcomes supporters and
members of the public to be part of its annual fundraiser in support of the upcoming 2014/15 anti-whaling

CONSUMER DIRECTED CARE: Unit Pricing Your Services. Enhancing Viability Series – THINK TANK
The Federal Government is committed to providing community-based and residential care consumers,
and their carers, with a greater say about the types of care services they receive and the delivery of those
services. This initiative is generally termed Consumer Directed Care (CDC) packages. CDC communitybased packages in have been on limited offer for several years and the Australian Government plans on
introducing CDCs into residential care in the future. This approach to care-funding is also relevant to
disability support organisations and other providers of community services. For service providers, a key
element in being successful in attracting and implementing CDC packages sustainably, is to recognise
and quantify the real total unit costs in CDC packages comprising service delivery costs, care planning
and management costs, and administrative costs. This workshop covers:
•A review of the available financial costs data of initially setting up for CDC packages;
•Issues and solutions in calculating your real total unit costs;
•How to forecast and budget unit costs;
•Cost-coding and tracking unit costs at the individual CDC package level in common software packages
•Tips and traps in ensuring sustainability of CDC services. Workshop workbook and CD of resources is

Little Taccas - You're never too young to develop a green thumb! The "Little Taccas" program, named
after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.
Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the

Evening for Eben - Eben Jefford was a Paramedic who worked at Redland Bay Ambulance Station.
When plans for this fundraiser originally commenced, Eben had been recently diagnosed with stage IV
stomach cancer and liver metastases. Eben fought hard but unfortunately lost his battle on 13th of
September 2014. He was only 44. Eben leaves behind a very young family well before his time. Eben
also served with the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Defence Force. Eben spent his whole
life protecting and helping others. While a lot of you may not have known Eben, we hope you will join us

14 Nov – 4 Jan Sue Ryan Camp Dogs - On 14 November the Cairns Regional Gallery will officially become home to a
group of irresistible camp dogs – all of whom have serious attitude! Created by Cairns-born artist Sue
Ryan, each dog has its own unique character. Whether sitting, barking, scratching or snarling, it is
evident that the artist certainly knows what makes our canine friends tick. Ryan’s Camp Dogs are lifesized sculptures made from wire frames and the woven nylon strands of ghost nets – a legacy of the
commercial fishing industry that is washed up around the shores of much of Australia’s northern
coastlines. In 2013, the Friends of the Regional Gallery fell in love with Ryan’s dogs and commissioned
the artist to make three Camp Dogs for the Gallery’s Permanent Collection. “The Friends of the Gallery
are thrilled that the funds we have raised through memberships and fundraising events means that our
Camp Dogs will have a permanent home here in Cairns and that future generations can enjoy them and
love them as much as we do”, said Hayley Gillespie , President of the Friends of the Cairns Regional
Gallery. Ryan’s works are inspired by many years of working with artists in the Indigenous communities
of Cape York. Most recently, Ryan has been recognized for her lead role in the development of Ghost
Net art, with many Ghost Net sculptures now represented in major gallery collections around Australia.
Camp Dogs bring together Ryan’s passion for the environment, her work with Ghost Nets Australia and
her knowledge of traditional weaving techniques. However, it is Ryan’s irrepressible sense of humour

and her uncanny understanding of all things canine that make Camp Dogs so endearing. Join us at 6pm
on Friday 28 November to welcome the Gallery’s latest acquisition and make our Camp Dogs feel at
home. Camp Dogs will open in conjunction with Sam Tupou’s latest exhibition, Future Landscapes and

14 Nov – 4 Jan At 6pm on Friday 28 November, Future Landscapes, an exhibition of works by Sam Tupou, will be
officially opened at the Cairns Regional Gallery. Sam Tupou was formerly based in Cairns but now lives
and works in Brisbane. Tupou has been described as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging artists.
Born in New Zealand to a Tongan father, his work combines Pacific Island influences, including Tongan
tapa, with pop art patterning and street art techniques. Future Landscapes is an exhibition that brings
together a series of screen-printed acrylic works that explore how imagery from our past can mesh and
morph into present day realities and future aspirations. Using his distinctive technique of silk-screen and
digital printing on PVC and paper, Tupou has re-invented captured moments and images, created
fictional landscapes and superimposed these to create images of an altered present or conceptual future.
Most recently, Tupou has used images from his old family photo albums and reworked these to
incorporate biomedical engineering, cloning and interplanetary travel themes and references. Tupou’s
use of cultural, social and scientific references, combined with past and present landscapes and pop
culture figures and images, makes the works in Future landscapes dynamic, compelling and often
surreal. Future Landscapes will be officially opened by Margaret Genever who is a well-known Cairns
based artist. Future Landscapes opens in conjunction with the launch of Ravenshoe artist, Sue Ryan’s
new canine sculptures Camp Dogs, in the Gallery Niche Space and everyone is warmly invited to attend.

Little Taccas - You're never too young to develop a green thumb! The "Little Taccas" program, named
after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.
Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the

CALLING ALL MEN AND BOYS - In Her Shoes Relay race and fundraiser - The In Her Shoes relay race
is a fun opportunity for men and boys to raise attention to the serious cases and effects of domestic and
family violence within Cairns. This event is part of the White Ribbon Day and 16 Days of Activism Against
Gendered Violence campaigns. With at least one woman killed every week in Australia by their former or
current partners, raising awareness of domes-tic and family violence is vital. This event aims to foster and
encourage male leadership in the prevention of violence against women, based on the understanding

I.D.E.A.S Van (Indigenous Diabetes Eyes and Screening) - delivering enhanced diabetes care through
up-skilling aboriginal health workers in their knowledge of diabetes and diabetes related illnesses. .
Patients will be managed through appropriate referral pathways to receive treatment, including specialist

eye care at the regional specialist centres or at a purpose built, fully equipped, and specially designed
ophthalmic trailer (I.D.E.A.S VAN). The I.D.E.A.S VAN will serve as an “annexe” to the AMS and provide
services from specialist ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, optometrist and diabetes educators (locally
based and visiting) to manage diabetes and its ophthalmic complications. The I.D.E.A.S VAN will
enhance existing services with state of the art equipment, staff and clinic space as needed by local and
visiting service providers. A Tele-Health system in each centre will facilitate the education of health
workers and improve communication between service providers It will connect the Princess Alexandra
Hospital with the AMS to facilitate online consultations with Endocrinologists. The I.D.E.A.S Van will be

Professional Development Workshop - Recognising and Responding to Dementia in Indigenous
Communities. A two day workshop that will give you the skills you need to provide quality dementia care
and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with dementia, their families and community.
About the workshop: Dementia is acknowledged as a significant issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people in remote communities. Recent studies indicate a prevalence rate up to five times that in
the non-Indigenous population. Primary health care and related workers from rural, remote and
Indigenous communities require a clear understanding of dementia, and the skills and strategies to
assess and assist both the person with dementia and their family in managing their dementia. This
workshop will give you the skills you need to provide quality dementia care and support. This workshop is
suitable for health and allied health professionals, aged and community care coordinators, health
students, and others working with older people and people with dementia in indigenous communities.
Learning Objectives
Identify different types of dementia including causes, signs, symptoms, and progress of the disease,
and be able to communicate this effectively to family.
Distinguish dementia from other conditions that may have similar signs and symptoms.
Use appropriate tools (including KICA) to assess Indigenous clients for dementia.
Understand the progressive changes associated with a person with dementia.
Identify ways of managing the person with dementia including behaviour management, environmental
modifications, medication and other appropriate interventions.
Develop strategies with family and other carers to enable them to manage any difficulties with their
family member in their community for as long as possible.
Develop a plan for long term management of a person with dementia in their community.

formulation of the 2014 World Indigenous Domestic Violence Conference scheduled to be held in Cairns,
Australia on 8th- 10th December 2014. The event is designed to be the largest international gathering of
Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples with an interest in stopping Domestic Violence within Indigenous
communities. Our goal in hosting this conference is to highlight positive outcomes of various community
programs that impacts Indigenous families on a day to day basis dealing with issues of domestic violence
within our communities. MEES’ philosophy is to provide opportunities for networking, sharing of
information and experiences that will empower individuals, groups and organisations in the struggle
against Domestic Violence. As today's society has moved forward into structured communities, the
incidence of intra-tribal violence has slowly faded. Gender equalization and the abuse of the rights of
many women and children have also played an important role in highlighting violence within the family
unit. Some great initiatives over the years have been developed to stem the incidence of domestic
violence. It is recognized that abuse takes place in all areas of society from the rich to the poor, from
Indigenous communities through to mainstream society. However, Indigenous people have a unique style
of living whereby the "family unit" is not confined to the mainstream nuclear family. It is extended family
which in many cases is made up of the whole community, especially living in isolated areas. This
conference will focus on a holistic approach based upon the beliefs of many Indigenous peoples, no
matter where your origins come from. As such, the topics will be centred around the psychological,
physical, emotional and mental well-being of the individual together with the community. Therefore, we
expect to draw delegates from many areas, including researchers, community representatives,
government and non-government agencies.

Safe from the Start Training - You can make a difference to children who have witnessed family violence!
Cairns regional Domestic Violence Service is pleased to host the Safe from the Start training. The Safe
from the Start project was initiated by The Salvation Army – it’s an evidence based research project
developed in partnership with two universities (UTAS/Swinburne Vic) covering how to work
therapeutically with children who have been exposed to family violence, abuse or trauma. The research
showed some of the negative impacts on children that can occur when living with family violence, abuse
or trauma. As a result of the ‘States of Mind’ research, a 1-day Training program and the Safe from the
Start Resource Kit using ‘activity based play’ for children aged 0-6 was developed. The Safe from the
Start action research showed that one way to actively support children through their experiences of
violence and trauma is through play therapy. Play enables symbolic communication with the child as it is
the way in which a child can express their feelings and connect with and seek to understand their world.
Over 1000 family violence, AOD and child protection workers, counsellors, foster carers, family and
children’s services workers have attended training nationally in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Safe
from the Start won the top National Crime & Violence Prevention Award in 2011 and NAPCAN Award in
2013. The Safe from the Start training covers:
The research findings on the impact on children who have witnessed or experienced family violence.
What is family violence, activity-based-play and how to use contents in the Resource Kit
Each participant will receive Safe from the Start research report, Training Manual, DVD PowerPoint
presentation, Therapeutic Play DVD, brochures and posters and new Indigenous/CALD resources.
