Dr. José I. Ricard, a native of Cuba and a 1960 graduate of
the University of Havana Medical School, served as the Cuban
Olympic Team Physician and the Cuban Sports Medicine
Director before fleeing the communism of Cuba in 1963 to
come to West Virginia. The Cuban native fought the war
against Fidel Castro as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps from
1950 - 1959.
Dr. Ricard is the only physician who is a member of the
Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame and is responsible
for starting Marshall University’s Sports Medicine program.
As Team Physician of the Thundering Herd since 1981, Dr.
Ricard was a key component to the rise of Marshall athletics.
As a Family Physician, Dr. Ricard provided care to thousands
of patients through his private practice. He also served as a
past President of the West Virginia Chapter of the American
Academy of Family Physicians and was awarded the
Academy’s highest honor, the prestigious “Family Doc”
Award in 1994.
Dr. Ricard served as the Vice President of the Family
Medicine Foundation of West Virginia for over 30 years and
was instrumental in the success of the Foundation’s annual
conference. To honor his tireless and dedicated efforts, the
conference’s name was changed in 2008 to the Annual Jose I.
Ricard, MD Family Medicine & Sports Medicine Conference.
Dr. Ricard’s achievements in the Tri-State area include helping
to establish the Marshall University Medical Center and the
Marshall University Sports Medicine Hall of Fame. He served
as Co-Chairman of the Marshall University School of
Medicine Family Practice Sports Medicine Department, where
he was also an Associate Professor. Dr. Ricard also received a
Lifetime Member Recognition Award by the Big Green
Scholarship Foundation and was a major contributor to several
of Marshall University’s booster programs.
His lifelong achievements go well beyond the Tri-State area,
and his impact has been felt throughout the world. He was
well-known for his accent and infectious smile, and he is
remembered and missed by many in the Tri-State area. The
Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia is proud to
honor his commitment to the Tri-State area, to Marshall
University, and to the practice of Family Medicine.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
To provide health care professionals with an update on the
diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered problems.
As a result of attending this Conference, participants will
review current clinical concepts in core areas of Family
Medicine and Sports Medicine, acquire practical, clinical
information helpful in the diagnosis and management of
medical problems, and enhance and advance knowledge, skills,
and professional performance, thereby furthering excellence in
health care in West Virginia and the surrounding region.

This live activity, the 28th Annual José I. Ricard, MD Family
Medicine & Sports Medicine Conference, with a beginning date
of November 13, 2014, has been reviewed and is acceptable for
up to 26.50 Prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of
Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit
commensurate with the extent of their participation in the
activity. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American
Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1
credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. When
applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be
reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

SPORTS MEDICINE PROGRAM
Paul W. Ambrose, MD, a dedicated family doctor, died
tragically at the age of 32 as a passenger on American Airlines
Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on September 11,
2001. Paul grew up in Huntington, West Virginia and
attended Marshall University, as well as the Marshall
University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at
Dartmouth University and received a master’s degree in public
health from Harvard University. Paul was a Senior Clinical
Adviser in the Office of the Surgeon General and a Fellow at
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. After his
passing, Paul received the U.S. Surgeon General’s Medallion,
the federal department’s highest honor.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman and was keenly interested in
sports medicine, obesity, and overall physical health. At the
time of his death, Paul was flying to Los Angeles, CA for an
adolescent obesity conference, a program that was fittingly
dedicated to Paul, posthumously. The Family Medicine
Foundation of West Virginia is privileged to honor the
memory of Paul W. Ambrose, MD.

John Brookfield is the founder, creator, and developer of the
Battling Ropes System, as well as multiple world record holder and
author. John has been a leader in the strength and fitness world for
many years, and is known around the globe for his amazing feats of
strength and endurance. He has trained hundreds of professional
athletes on developing physical capacity. He has been on television
with shows like Regis and Kathie Lee, The Today Show, and Good
Morning America, just to name a few. John has been featured in
the Ripley's Believe It Or Not and the Guinness Book of World
Records, as well as several publications including MMA
Sports, Fighters Only, and The Washington Post. John has authored
four books, including Mastery of Hand Strength. Although John is
52 years old, he feels that he has not yet reached his potential when it
comes to his fitness level. By finding and developing the Battling
Ropes system, John has found a new motivation to climb higher due
to results that the system produces.
Several notable feats:

John recently pulled a truck weighing 24,000 pounds a distance
of one full mile in one hour and 23 minutes. The mile pull was
done without the use of any pulling ropes.

John rolled up one-quarter mile of steel nonstop in 59 minutes.
The world record was done by using 62 20-foot steel bars. Each
bar was laying on the ground and had to be rolled up so tight
that they fit into a small suitcase.

John and Jon Bruney pulled a semi-truck weighing slightly over
32,000 pounds a distance of one full mile in one hour and 36
minutes. Much of the route had an upgrade.

John tore 100 decks of plastic-coated poker cards in half in two
minutes and 15 seconds. John tore 60 decks of plastic-coated
poker cards in half in one minute exactly.

John performed 1,200 kettlebell snatches in one hour exactly
using a 53-pound kettlebell.

John performed 302 kettlebell snatches in ten minutes using a
53-pound kettlebell.

John bent 520 nails into a U-shape in one hour and 42 minutes.
The nails were 60-penny nails.

West Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs (dba
GFWC West Virginia) raised over $60,000 for ESP
(Educational Seed for Physicians). On May 1,
1991, the ESP Fund was transferred to the Family
Medicine Foundation of West Virginia.
ESP is now governed by the Family Medicine
Foundation of West Virginia Board with a selection
committee composed of representatives from the
Foundation Board, GFWC West Virginia, and the
medical profession. In April of each year, the
Selection Committee selects recipients from among
2nd, 3rd, or 4th year medical student applicants.
Scholarships to individual recipients are $5,000 per
year for a possible $20,000 for four recipients to be
awarded on the basis of need and interest in Family
Medicine.
A student receiving an ESP Scholarship promises to
specialize in the field of Family Medicine, and upon
completion of his or her intern or residency training,
he or she promises to practice in the state of West
Virginia for two years. If the ESP Scholarship is
granted to a 4th year student, the recipient would
only be required to practice in the state for one year.
TULLY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Dr. C. Carl & Margaret Tully Medical Student
Fund was created from a Charitable Remainder
Unitrust established by the Tullys. It is governed by
the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia
Board with a Tully Fund Selection Committee
composed of representatives from the Foundation
Board, GFWC West Virginia, medical schools, and
the medical profession.
In April of each year, the Selection Committee
selects recipients from among the qualified
applicants. Scholarships to individual 3rd and 4th
year medical students in the amount of $5,000 per
year, or a total of $10,000 for 3rd year medical
students, are awarded on the basis of need and
interest in Family Medicine.
A student receiving a Tully Scholarship promises to
specialize in the field of Family Medicine in the
state of West Virginia for one year upon completion
of his or her intern or residency training. After one
year of practice is completed, the Family Medicine
Foundation of West Virginia Tully Fund agrees to
waive repayment.
