Peanut free snacks, lunch and diaper supplies (if required) should be sent. Tuesday, November 18 From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Are you in the ‘Next Chapter’ of your parenting life? Do you have school aged kids, and are looking to socialize with other parents with school age kids? This group will help you find yourself as you go through the middle years before the teen years! Each month we will have a different topic to discuss while having some fun and food with friends. This program is designed for parents with children ages six and up. Childcare will be provided if you have other younger children ages 18 months to five years old. A Parent Community Creative Tots Fridays, November 7, 14, 21, 28 From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Free child care for children 18 months to five years A ‘community’ of parents will discuss topics related to parenting children of all ages. This free drop in program is a great way to meet others and introduce your child to a group setting. Please bring a peanut free snack for your child. A Parent Group Wednesdays, November 12 and 26 From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Free child care for children 18 months to five years. Come join us for a morning of fun, food and activities. Join other parents for some socializing, while your children 18 months to five years old socialize in the playroom. Children under 18 months will stay in the room with the parents and play. Friends for Life Thursdays, November 6, 13, 20, 27 and December 4 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Call to see if space is available. Friends for Life is a program designed to teach children the life skills to effectively cope with difficult and/or anxiety provoking situations. It builds emotional resiliency and problem solving abilities through a child friendly curriculum. It promotes self confidence when dealing with difficult or anxiety provoking situations and is an early prevention program that can help prevent anxiety and depression in children and youth. This program is for children ages 6—9 years old. Evening Childcare Wednesday, November 19 From 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Westwin Children’s Centre $10 for children over 2 years old: $12 for under years old. Ask about our family rate. Registration deadline: November 17, 2014 We’ll take care of your children 1—5 years old, while you enjoy some adult time. Perhaps you’d like to go out for dinner, for a walk or have a chance for a conversation without child interruptions. School age children might like to visit the MFRC Youth Drop In Centre. Please call 204-833-2500 ext 2491 to register. Special Needs Community Expo Thursday, November 6 From 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:30 at the MFRC. Have questions about special needs services in Winnipeg? We have invited a number of agencies and organizations that provide supports to individuals and families who are affected by special needs. Guests at this event will include Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba, the Movement Centre, MATC, Disability Tax Credit Services and more. There will be some presentations, as well as the opportunity to speak with representatives informally. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for the schedule. Adult Programs Coffee and Conversation Tuesdays, November 4, 18 and 25 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Please advise in advance if childcare is required The Coffee & Conversation drop in program is open to anyone interested in meeting MFRC volunteers and staff. It is an opportunity to learn more about and participate in planning some of the MFRC programs, especially those involving volunteers. Crochet Class Thursday, November 20 From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. $10.00 Registration deadline: November 14 This series of crochet classes will take you from the very beginning to a finished product at the end of the last class. Our last class of this session will provide you with a finished project. Use all of the stitches and terminology that you’ve learned and create your own masterpiece. Make Ahead Meals Tuesday, November 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. $60.00 Registration deadline: November 18, 2014 Join us for an evening of food and fun. We’ll be making five take home freezer meals from the books ‘Not your Mother’s Make Ahead and Freeze cookbook’ and the ‘The Big Cook’. This is a great way to get out of the dinner rut and create some new meals for your family. Registration and prepayment are required. Please bring a cutting board, sharp knife, large mixing bowl, mixing spoon, spatula, measuring spoons and cups and a can opener. Would you like to get better customer service? Do you want to get your message across briefly and effectively? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then Inter-Comm is for you. Inter-Comm is a new course for anyone who Second Language Services wants to improve their communication skills. The course looks at barriers to communication and provides practical, proven methods to overcome these barriers and create a respectful environment. Pain Management Yoga Mondays, November 3 and December 8 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. $5.00 per class Registration deadline: October 30, 2014 Join us and try our ‘PhysioLogic Yoga’. These classes use the art of yoga and science of rehabilitation exercise to control back/neck/ shoulder pain no matter what the cause. Improve flexibility, stress levels and posture. Stretching and strengthening techniques will be supported by breath work and relaxation practices. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat if possible. Creative Café Wednesday, November 19 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. $10.00 Registration deadline: November 13, 2014 Come out and explore your creative side. This month we will be making an advent calendar. Put your own touch on this Christmas tradition. Deployment Programs During deployments family members are welcome to participate in any and all programming at the MFRC. If you attend a program that does not offer childcare you are entitled to receive additional Stress Free Childcare funds. As a reminder drop in childcare is available at the MFRC on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop in between these times for a coffee, participate in a program, or to mail a package and childcare will be made available to you. Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR) Reunion Briefing Tuesday, November 18 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Registration deadline: November 12, 2014 While many families recognize the need for preparation prior to the deployment, preparing for the return of your loved one is just as important. Although your emotions about the upcoming reunion are bound to be much more positive than those that you were dealing with prior to their departure, it is essential to understand that there can be some common transition challenges for both families and CAF personnel during this time. Preparation, education and skills are key for both you and your military loved one's success in managing this phase of the deployment. French Coffee Every Wednesday morning 10 to 11 a.m. Join us every Wednesday morning for a coffee and a chat with members of the francophone community. Free child care is provided for children ages 18 months to 5 years old. Francophone Ladies Group Christmas baking workshop Sunday, November 30 at 1:00 p.m. $10.00 Registration deadline: November 26, 2014 What could be better than cooking with a group of people and learning new cooking techniques, while having fun! We will be making our Christmas baking. Fun guaranteed! Call For Submissions Each year at the Yellow Ribbon Gala the MFRC displays pictures in order to highlight our program areas. This year we would like to showcase military families. We invite you to submit a picture of your family that depicts an aspect of military lifestyle. Show us firsthand what ‘Military families; strength behind the uniform’ means to you and your family. If we choose to use your picture you will receive a $50 gift card to a place of your choosing. In total 5 pictures will be displayed. Submissions must be received no later than December 5, 2014. Please submit your picture electronically by emailing it to [email protected] Images are going to be reprinted as 16x20 so only good quality, clear, sharp images will be considered. Once submitted all pictures become property of the Winnipeg MFRC and will not be returned to the sender unless it is requested. The Yellow Ribbon Gala is the MFRC’s largest annual fundraiser. It is being held on February 21, 2015 at the Victoria Inn Hotel and Conference Centre. Tickets will go on sale on November 6, 2014. Youth drop-in centres The MFRC Youth Centres, North Side, 102 Comet Street and the South Side, 347 Doncaster Street, are currently open Monday to Friday. Please see below for hours of operation. Youth Drop-In Centre Hours of Operation: North Side (6-12 year olds) Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday: 5:00pm 8:00pm Tuesday/Thursday: CLOSED * PLEASE NOTE NEW HOURS OF OPERATION! South Side (6-12 year olds) Monday-Friday: 4:00pm - 8:00pm *Hours of Operation are subject to change based on usage and youth attendance. *Youth Centres are closed on Holidays. Both Centers will be CLOSED, Tuesday November 11, 2014 for Remembrance Day. Both Youth Centres are invited to attend the field trip to the 17 Wing Recreation Centre Pool on Friday, November 28th from 6:00-8:00pm. Meditation Monday is a drop in group for those who wish to relax and find focus. Activities will vary but may include mediation, mindfulness and guided imagery. Please join us to enjoy the peace and quiet. In consideration for all participants comfort, conversations should be held outside the meditation room, prior to entering or upon leave the group. Kalyn Falk, MA, is an author, speaker, retreat guide, and spiritual director. She has been an active advocate for her son, who is profoundly autistic and released her book “Mother of the Year and Other Elusive Awards: Misadventures in Autism” this year. She will be sharing her story of parenting and finding her own voice as well as inviting other parents to think about their own resilience in this interactive evening.
