Christ the King Sunday November 23, 2014 “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink.” ~ Matthew 25:33-37 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis e-mail: [email protected] “Caesar Rubicon translatus est!!!” “Caesar has crossed the Rubicon!” Those are words that sent panic through the Republic of Rome in 49 B.C. Caesar had just conquered Gaul and by Roman Law a general of an army was forbidden to bring his army back to Italy without specific permission of the Roman Senate. Caesar ignored the law, crossed the Rubicon River to enter Italy from Gaul and set in motion a civil war that destroyed the Republic and established a dictatorship that helped to usher in the era of emperors. Imagine how the people of Rome at the time must have thought their world was coming to an end! The Roman Empire lasted another five centuries and when it fell, imagine the panic; the same panic felt by Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Greeks before them! Imagine how the English kingdoms and Irish Monasteries felt when the Vikings sacked their lands! Imagine how the people of every place felt when the government which they supported or the political persuasion they accepted came crashing down upon them. Over the centuries the human race has seen nations fall and rise with regularity, so when political bodies today teeter on the brink of disaster why should people feel any differently than millennia or centuries ago? Think of what Europe endured a century ago at the outset and gruesome conclusion of World War I, and then think of the life of people under Lenin, Stalin and Hitler who brutalized their way to power in the aftermath only to have their own “empires” crushed beneath them. How foolish we humans can be when we try to set up political systems that depend on the subjugation of people with little or no regard to the inherent, God-given dignity of every person. In 1929 Pope Pius XI could see trouble brewing throughout the world. Once again the evil one was reincarnating itself in the form of godless National Socialism and Communism. Human dignity was once again being trampled underfoot by the jackboots of thugs. Where could people turn to find any sense of hope or dignity in the face of such horror? Only in Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, could there be any sense of hope for the future or salvation of the human race. As a result, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King to be celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, and it is this feast the Church proclaims and celebrates today. Our world now is fussing over Russian annexation of Crimea and incursion into Eastern Ukraine. ISIS threatens the entire world, especially our Christian brothers and sisters who live in lands under their control. The Western Governments seem powerless to halt any of this, mainly because God has been pushed aside in our political lives so that the personal ego and runs unbridled through the land with little care for the consequences. What is the answer? The answer for every Christian is allegiance to Christ the King above all. No political party, no economic plan, no flag or national allegiance can bring about the peace and unity God intended for the world at the beginning of creation. They’ll all fall someday. All of them. All of them. Only our allegiance to Christ the King can save us. “Christ Jesus, Victor! Christ Jesus, Ruler! Christ Jesus, Lord and Redeemer!” THANKSGIVING DAY is this coming Thursday. Our Thanksgiving Day Mass will be at 9:00 a.m. is one of the most beautiful Masses of the year! Please make every effort to come to Mass that day and give thanks to God for His blessings to us. As usual, we will have a food drive on Thanksgiving and we ask you to bring non-perishable food items to Mass and to please place your donations in the Church Library/Meeting/Childcare Room. Members of our parish St. Vincent DePaul Society will see to their distribution. The collection taken up on Thanksgiving Day will be divided between Catholic Charities and North County Interfaith Services to assist them in their work with the needy of San Diego. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU to Lew Gary and Joanna McClure who were awarded the Matthew 25 Award from Catholic Charities last week. Matthew 25 could be considered our “marching orders” as Christians in caring for one another. Lew and Joanna are always ready to help out in any way possible, have been dedicated members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a critical element of our hosting the Interfaith Shelter Network every year! CONGRATULATIONS, too, to our altar Servers Jessica Schmuttermair and Richard McCabe who received awards from the Knights of Columbus for their dedicated commitment as Altar Servers! God bless you all! WE DEEPLY APPRECIATE all who helped prepare, all who participated in and all who attended our Mass of Remembrance and its reception on November 11. We especially thank Carolyn Primo, Veronica Coleman, organist Jim Thompson, and our Resurrection Choir. It was a beautiful and moving remembrance for all of our deceased to thank God for bringing them into our lives. We will re-open on Monday morning as usual at 8:30 a.m. WOW! The generosity of the people of San Rafael Parish is absolutely unbelievable! A few weeks ago Fr. Gary Weismann preached at our parish on behalf of World Mission Sunday. Because of your generosity we were able to send a check to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the amount of $40,899! That’s right; over Forty Thousand Dollars! UN-BE-LIEVABLE!!! Then, a few weeks later, we made our annual Veteran’s Day Appeal for the Semper Fi Fund which helps provide needed assistance to wounded military personnel and their families. Every dollar we contributed was being matched by the “Go Dad” Foundation. Without much fanfare, our parishioners contributed over $14,000 to the Semper Fi Fund, meaning that $28,000 was made available to those in the Service who need it! This parish is Fantastic! We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers in the bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list up-to-date. Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will list names for prayer requests for one month. After the last Sunday of the month the names on the list will be taken off and a new prayer request list will be published the first Sunday of the month. If someone wishes to have a name remembered again, the name must be re-submitted to the office. This will assure that we keep an upto-date and more readable list.
