And how great it is to see them back! Last week’s Yr 5 Rite of Passage to Middle School and Yr 9 Rite of Passage to Senior School were beautiful celebrations of our phases of learning and the students’ re-commitment to our Mission and Vision in the next chapter. The 6-9ers are having a wonderful time at their Activity Days and doing us proud representing St Eugene College. Two late movers and shakers…..Luke Collier is getting married and moving to Taree. What a wonderful Campus Minister he has been. I’m moving to a new position in Brisbane Catholic Education in Social Justice, Education and Advocacy. While this looks like an exciting last chapter to my career, I am gutted to be leaving St Eugene College and leave my heart behind here. It has been a wonderful seven and a half years working in this community that I have been so proud to be a part of. A big welcome goes out to Jim Midgley who will be Acting Principal next year. Jim is currently principal at St Peter’s at Caboolture. Jim will catch up with you next year as he is in the last gasps of leaving his school too! Next week Jim will be with us doing interviews for the new positions that have recently surfaced; Business Manager, Guidance Counsellor and Campus Minister. Prep to Yr 9 break-up for the Christmas Vacation on Friday, December 5 at about 11.30, following the Liturgy and Farewell which begins at 10.00 am. Hope you can join us. I would be thrilled to say goodbye to our students and families past as well. Please spread the word. School resumes next year on Wednesday, January 28 for Yr 11-12 students and Friday January 30 for Prep students. May your holiday be a safe and happy one and your Christmas full of Christ’s peace and joy. Thanks for the memories! Lives and circumstances change. The Beatles at the end of their great album “Abbey Road” have a little offering that is not part of any of their masterful tracks. They sing “in the end the love you make, is equal to the love you take” and encourage us to “carry that load”. It is really the modern paraphrase of the gospel. The love of your neighbour with the love of your God is the ultimate purpose and destiny of every person. The rest is incidental and not really that important. Happy Christmas everyone and good rest and peace this season. We will do it all again next year. Hooray! MARK SHAKHOVSKOY P-12 HEAD (MIDDLE/SENIOR (MIDDLE/SENIOR YEARS) Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students Reports, Portfolios and Class Lists for 2015 Today (Thursday) your child will bring home their report, portfolio and class list for 2015. Congratulations to all for the commitment to doing their best and consequently the progress that has been made this year. Thank you for the Gift of Mr Anthonisz May we always remember with joy and gladness, the wonderful gift that Denis is and has been to our St Eugene College community. May God bless you and your family for eternity. Thank You Thank you to the staff, students, parents and carers who helped make this another amazing year at St Eugene College ~ teamwork makes the dream work! Love and blessings What is Christmas? DENIS ANTHONISZ - PRINCIPAL STUFF HAPPENS My mother has a great saying that sounds much better when said in German than when it is literally translated. “Man proposes, God disposes” is the essence of the phrase and for me, it is better expressed in the colloquial by saying “we plan, then stuff happens”. As we approach Christmas 2014 this is a lesson that I have had to learn anew as has the community we serve. We had some great plans that have succeeded beautifully. Kids got taught, classes filled and many special brilliant events happened. Occasionally we have encountered the unexpected that seems to disrupt and hinder some of our carefully laid plans. I never planned to get sick this year and take time off work. Stuff happens. Plans needed to be rephrased, inconveniences overcome and a new way forward found. With good will all things are possible. This community did not expect to be farewelling a much loved principal this year. Stuff happens. We rephrase and replan and move on. With good will all is possible. /....cont It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to God’s peace.” ~Agnes M. Pharo May you and your families experience the joy and wonder of Jesus’s birth and have a safe and relaxing holiday. The brainchild of our principal, Mr Anthonisz, the goal was to support the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation and also to contribute towards the cost of bringing Cilicap students to the College next year. The theme was ‘superheroes’ so dressing-up made the antics that much more enjoyable. The actual ‘Dash’ consisted of an obstacle course then a sprint to the finish on the north oval. Amid much chaos and fun, seven medals were awarded to the winners in combined year level events. A prize was also awarded for the most artistic superhero colouring-in by one of our preppies. After the ‘Dash’ many students, including Ashley a.k.a. Batman, dressed as their favourite superhero to chase Mr Scott a.k.a. Spiderman and Ms Wasson a.k.a. Superwoman around the oval. With water pistols loaded they soaked those in their path. Meanwhile, Mr Orton and his team of amateur fire-fighters doused all on the oval with the fire hose, a great way to cool down on a scorching afternoon! All in all, a fundraising success with over $900 contributed by our generous students and staff. Thank you to the Yr 11 students and College staff who helped before and on the day. Tuckshop will resume on the first day of school, Wednesday 28 January 2015. It is no easy feat to undergo the audition process and it is a wonderful achievement for such a brilliant student. Well done Craig! CONGRATULATIONS Classroom Music News Elizabeth Elliott has badges for everything from Hiking, canoeing, navigating and first aid and community service. A member of the Burpengary Scout Group and a year 10 student at Saint Eugene College, Lizzie has been Awarded the Australian Scout Medallion, which is the highest award achievable in the Scout Section, Receiving the Scout Medallion is the culmination of four years of hard work “It’s something honorable to achieve and there are so many skills I have learnt which assist me in everyday life, and at school, it has enabled me to become actively involved with our local community, and I’ve made some awesome friends. The final task to achieve this award is to consolidate skills learnt, by planning, organising and leading a 30km hike in unfamiliar territory with a group of junior scouts, this was done in the beautiful Noosa Trails network, over a weekend. Lizzie said through the dedication of volunteer people, like scout leaders, committee members, and parents together with the support of the scouting hierarchy from Murrumba District and Scouts Qld Branch, the Burpengary group is now thriving. Without a thriving group, and extensive program, it is impossible to achieve the ASM. On Wednesday 26th of November, students from Music in Years 912 had the opportunity to travel into Southbank to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre to watch The Lion King Musical. Students had the opportunity to develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the Musical Theatre world and were able to explore elements of production beyond film and television. Students were able to engage in the performance and were captivated by the lavish costumes, props and outstanding musicality by the orchestra and performers. College News CREATIVE ARTS NEWS Casting Announcements Thank you to all students who have so courageously and persistently been auditioning during recent weeks for our 2015 musical Grease, as well as for dance troupes for next year. We sincerely congratulate you all on your preparation, bravery and professionalism throughout a tedious and challenging process for all involved. As many of you well know, we are restricted both by stage space and by script in terms of how many team members we can cast for these creative projects. It is always with deepest regret that we are unable to take in every performer who auditions for these teams. We thank parents for their ongoing support with helping students understand this difficult issue. We also strongly encourage those students who missed out this time to persist with the auditioning process next time around if it is something that they would truly like to achieve being a part of in the future. Please do not hesitate to come and enquire with staff for possible recommendations and suggestions for technical growth and improvement if the musical and dance troupes are important goals that students are pursuing. Sincere thanks to the many dedicated panel staff members who have so generously given up so much of their own time over these last few weeks to complete the casting process. It is with the upmost, heartfelt sadness that this week we farewell one of our most passionate (and of course TALENTED!) artists, performers, truest inspirations and of course –LEADERS of all time here in the St Eugene family – Mr Denis Anthonisz. Without the dreams, insight, support, trust, guidance and passion of this creative, passionate and faith filled man and leader, our budding artists would quite simply never have enjoyed the immense growth and fruitful artistic opportunities that they have done over the last seven years. Denis, our heartfelt thank you for the unforgettable ways in which you have so passionately guided and inspired the unique and individual growth of each and every student in our community – just within the Arts, but in each and every way that individual students have required your support. To say you will be missed, would be the greatest of understatements. To say that you have left within us all a passionate and creative legacy that we will celebrate and treasure every single day is a little closer to the mark! How blessed and privileged your new community is to be receiving you! I do wonder though, just how long it will take in the new job before you are showing them all your favourite dance moves and best dress ups? Probably not too long I imagine!! Much love and blessings to you and Suzie always from us all, and thank you once again for all of the many wonderful things you have done for the overall life of our community. Kathy Stewart (Acting Academic Coordinator – Creative Arts) CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCES/ADDRESS All students (including Years 10 and 11 students who finished school last Friday) who have been cast in LEAD ROLES in Grease are asked to come in and pick up a copy of the Grease script from which to learn their lines over the Christmas holidays. Thursday this week is the best day to come in and do this. (Please see next page for casting details) If your contact details have changed for any reason at all during the past 6 months and you have not advised us, please do so as soon as possible. This is particularly important for change of address details for all parents and caregivers as the reporting process is about to commence, and this will ensure that you receive your child’s report successfully. Please contact the College on 3491 4606 or 3491 4603 or email us at [email protected]. Footloose DVD A big thank you to Jermin Sonquist for his help and expertise in editing this year’s musical footage. Thanks to Jermin, we now have a completely edited version of Footloose 2014. At this late stage of the term, if you would like a copy of this footage before the holidays, please feel free to contact me at school and arrange a time to bring in a USB on which to copy the footage. As it is an extremely large file, it is recommended you bring in a 16 GB drive to ensure the project will fit! Alternatively, you are most welcome to make contact after the Christmas break and arrange to collect a copy of this footage to keep as a wonderful keepsake of the great success that was Footloose this year! Thank You A final thank you to all students, staff and parents for their ongoing contributions to the Arts life of our school community here at St Eugene’s throughout 2014 and always.
