Hagel condemns Taliban attack on school
Classifieds
WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel strongly condemned the Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar, Pakistan, that
news reports say left more than 140 people dead, including more
than 130 children this week.
“On behalf of all the men and
women of the U.S. Defense Department, I extend our deepest
condolences to the people of Pakistan following today’s ruthless
attack on the army public school
in Peshawar,” the secretary said
in a statement. “This heartless
slaughter of over 100 innocent
students and teachers was an act
of pure cowardice. The United
States remains committed to
supporting Pakistan in its efforts
to combat extremism and ensure

Navy tests new unmanned underwater vehicle
by MC3 Edward Guttierrez III
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - TheNavy completed tests on the GhostSwimmer
unmanned underwater vehicle at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort
Story Dec. 11.
GhostSwimmer is the latest in a series of science-fiction-turned-reality projects developed by the chief of naval operations’ Rapid Innovation Cell project,
Silent NEMO. Silent NEMO is an experiment that explores the possible uses for
biomimetic, unmanned underwater vehicles in the fleet.
Over the past several weeks, Boston Engineering’s tuna-sized device has been
gathering data at JEBLC-FS on tides, varied currents, wakes, and weather conditions for the development of future tasks.
“This project and others that we are working
on at the CRIC are important because we are
harnessing the brainpower and talents of junior Sailors,” said Capt. Jim Loper, department
head for Concepts and Innovation, NWDC.
“The opportunity for a young Sailor who has a
good idea to get that idea heard, and to get it
turned into action, is greater [now] than any
other time in our Navy’s history.”
“GhostSwimmer will allow the Navy to have success during more types of
missions while keeping divers and Sailors safe,” said Michael Rufo, director of
Boston Engineering’s Advanced Systems Group.
The GhostSwimmer was developed to resemble the shape and mimic the
swimming style of a large fish. At a length of approximately 5 feet and a weight
of nearly 100 pounds, the GhostSwimmer vehicle can operate in water depths
ranging from 10 inches to 300 feet.
“It swims just like a fish does by oscillating its tail fin back and forth,” said
Rufo. “The unit is a combination of unmanned systems engineering and unique
propulsion and control capabilities.”
Its bio-mimicry provides additional security during low visibility intelligence,
surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions and friendly hull inspections,
while quieter than propeller driven craft of the same size, according to Navy
Warfare Development Command (NWDC).
The robot is capable of operating autonomously for extended periods of time due
to its long-lasting battery, but it can also be controlled via laptop with a 500-foot
tether. The tether is long enough to transmit information while inspecting a ship’s
hull, for example, but if operating independently (without a tether) the robot will
have to periodically be brought to the surface to download its data.

U.S., U,K. navies sign framework for future cooperation
Navy commands receive Federal
Energy and Water Management Award
by MC1 John Belanger
WASHINGTON - Four Navy Commands were honored with
the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program
(FEMP) 2014 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards at
the National Archives Dec. 9.
“The Department of Energy presents these awards annually
with assistance from participating agencies and of the Federal
Interagency Energy Management task force,” said Timothy Unruh,
DoE FEMP director. “Since the first of these awards was presented
in 1981, FEMP has recognized more than 1,200 winners.”
This year FEMP honored 25 individuals and teams with
Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. The recipients
collectively contributed to saving approximately 2 trillion British
thermal units (Btu) of energy, 1.3 billion gallons of water, 18.1
million gallons of fuel, and $115.8 million in energy and water
cost in fiscal year 2013.
The Navy has 70 installations around the globe, all of which are
engaged in energy and water management efforts. Out of those,
four commands stood out as exemplary for the DoE’s FEMP
award. They are:
- NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va., which received an award
for their energy program initiatives that saved 18 billion Btu and
39 million gallons of water.
- Naval District Washington, Naval Facilities Engineering
Command, Washington, D.C., which received an award for their
comprehensive energy program that reduced energy intensity by
nearly 19 percent and 13 percent from the respective baselines
across the region’s six installations.
- NAWS China Lake, Calif., which received a project award for
completing construction of a 13.78 megawatt solar photovoltaic
system, the largest solar plant in the Navy.
- Public Works Department, Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, which
received a project award for implementing an air conditioning
improvement project that saves 61 billion Btu and $2 million
annually.
WASHINGTON - Leaders
of the U.S. and British navies
agreed on a shared vision for
closer cooperation Dec. 11, the
culmination of a yearlong effort
that will build on a long-standing
maritime partnership over the
next 15 years.
Chief of Naval Operations
Adm. Jonathan Greenert and his
counterpart in the United Kingdom, First Sea Lord Sir George
Zambellas, signed a combined
strategic narrative that articulates
a shared vision for deeper cooperation between the U.S. Navy
and the Royal Navy.
“The United States and the
United Kingdom rely on our
navies to project power in critical regions and to protect the
freedom of navigation that underpins the global economy,”
said Greenert.
The narrative, titled “Combined Seapower: A Shared Vision
for Royal Navy-United States
Navy Cooperation,” is the culmination of a yearlong effort by
a RN-USN study group formed
in September 2013 to identify
opportunities to enhance ties.
“The narrative provides a
strategic vision to sustain and
enhance cooperation between
our two navies so that we can
provide forward presence and
be where it matters, when it matters,” Greenert said.
The U.S. and U.K. navies
share a common naval heritage
and legacy of collaboration since
the first half of the 19th century. More recently, a combined
RN-USN destroyer squadron
staff completed a nine-month
deployment to the U.S. 6th and
5th Fleet areas of responsibility
in April. Royal Navy personnel
were part of a staff that served
aboard USS Harry S. Truman
(CVN 75) and supported the
sea combat commander for the
strike group.
RN sailors also train aboard
USN aircraft carriers as the
Royal Navy constructs aircraft
carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth,
the lead ship of her class. The
United Kingdom currently has
15 pilots training in U.S. Navy
units. The two navies also work
closely on countering piracy,
supporting disaster relief efforts,
and fighting terrorism globally.
The narrative builds on these
collaborative efforts and includes
the following five features that
will characterize the RN-USN
partnership going forward: interoperability and mutual technology investment; combined
aircraft carrier operations; force
and capability planning; officer
exchanges; and collaborative
force management.
“This combined narrative
represents a new and exciting
opportunity for our two nations
to build on shared national interests through the value of credible
seapower,” said Zambellas. “It
is a powerful statement of our
shared maritime ambition, it cements our maritime leadership,
and it delivers an even deeper
partnership between our navies,
to the mutual strategic and operational advantage of both the
U.K. and U.S.”
The narrative represents a commitment by both navies to work
together to achieve shared economic and security interests in the
21st century. This cooperation will
ensure that the U.S. and the U.K.
remain leaders in the increasingly
important maritime domain.
Naval leaders discuss bilateral logistics
partnership between U.S., Japan
by Sky M. Laron
YOKOSUKA, Japan - Naval logistics leaders from the U.S. and
Japan met Dec. 4 at the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Maritime Staff Office in Tokyo for the 7th annual N4-N4 Talks to discuss
logistics in action and their bilateral relationship.
Taking care of ships and ensuring parts and supplies are delivered
on time to the vessels and Sailors who need them is a priority for
naval supply leaders from both the United States and Japan. Understanding how each service conducts business was an important part
of the discussion between the two delegations.
“It’s a great honor to host these Navy to Navy talks,” said Capt.
Tomonori Yokota, director of Logistics Planning and Supplies Division, Logistics Department, MSO. “Understanding each other’s
logistics systems is invaluable for the U.S. and Japan.”
The topics of conversation included everything from port visit
processes to the transportation of supplies and equipment, with both
sides sharing where they have had successes as well as difficulties
in executing their mission.
“With the tyranny of distance in this AOR (area of responsibility)
it is absolutely critical that we have the best lines of communication
in place to ensure material gets to where it needs to go,” said Cmdr.
Mark Sheffield, Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics
Center Yokosuka, Operations Department director and N4-N4 U.S.
presenter. “When you look at NAVSUP’s support to operations spanning from the Aleutian Islands to Sydney and Guam to Diego Garcia
in the Indian Ocean, understanding what capabilities and material
needs to be where and when is vital because ultimately we exist to
ensure these ships perform their mission of defending the interests of
the United States of America and keeping the sea lanes open.”

Panel mulls expanding
VA caregiver program
Mexican American Veterans Memorial.
Donations accepted to the California
Mexican American Veterans Memorial
SACRAMENTO - The California Department of Veterans Affairs
(CalVet) encourages Californians to honor Mexican American Veterans this holiday season by making a donation to help beautify and
enhance the California Mexican American Veterans Memorial - The
only memorial of its kind on state capitol grounds nationwide.
“We are close to having enough money to begin the building phase
of this project,” said Mirtha Villarreal-Younger, CalVet Deputy Secretary Minority Veterans Affairs. “When renovations are complete,
the memorial will be more beautiful, interactive, and engaging than
its founders ever imagined.”
The memorial was originally conceived by a group of Mexican
American mothers to honor the service of husbands and sons lost
during World War II. Known as El Soldado, the memorial was funded
by community donations and dedicated in 1951. Weathered and worn
over time, the memorial is badly in need of restoration.
Making an online donation to the Mexican American Beautification and Enhancement Committee is easy and secure. To donate
online, go to www.el-soldado.org. To donate by mail, send your
check to:

Donations of $25 are encouraged, but donations of any amount
are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

The House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC), Health
Subcommittee recently held a hearing on expanding the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Caregiver Program. Currently,
the program only covers veterans disabled in the line of duty
since September 11, 2001. FRA supports the “Caregivers
Expansion and Improvement Act” (S. 851/H.R. 3 3 8 3 )
sponsored by SVAC Chairman Sen. Bernie
Sanders (Vt.) and Rep. Elizabeth Esty
(Conn.), respectively, which enables
all veterans with a serious service-connected injury eligibility to participate in
the family caregiver services program. The
current program provides assistance to 18,000
caregivers each who provide care for a disabled veteran. There
are actually 5.5 million caregivers; including them all in the
law would cost an additional $2.6 billion annually. Spouses
make up 75 percent of all current caregivers. These family
members and loved ones shoulder the daily responsibilities of
bathing, feeding, dressing, managing medication and injections, arranging for rehabilitation, and more. A RAND study
commissioned by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation estimates the
services they provide save our nation $13.6 billion annually,
yet these caregivers too often pay a price - suffering physical
and emotional stress and illnesses; difficulty maintaining employment; financial, legal and family strains; and isolation. The
Association appreciates the subcommittee holding a hearing on
this important issue and will continue to work to raise awareness
of the challenges facing the 5.5 million volunteer caregivers to
America’s wounded warriors.

New program offers hometown media recognition for Sailors and Civilians of the Year
In the coming months, the
Navy will honor thousands
of Sailors and Navy civilians
with Sailor, Junior Sailor, Bluejacket and Civilian of the Year
honors.
Be sure to include hometown
cities and states, and NAVCO
will share the stories with the
featured Sailors’ hometown
media across the country.
NAVCO will also provide
each participating command
a media feedback report with
links to all coverage.
Through a new program,
the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO)
stands ready to help commands throughout the Navy
share these stories with each
honoree’s home town media.
NAVCO has developed and
deployed a new hometown
media outreach program to
share content with media
across America. In 2014, using creative procedures and
leveraging an industry-standard media access suite, nearly
4,200 stories and photos have
been placed in Sailors’ hometown media across the country,
with a cumulative audience
of nearly 73 million -- almost
a quarter of the U.S. population.
Commands can take advantage of this service by simply
submitting Sailor of the Year
and similar stories and photos, which are likely being
produced for internal media
already, to NAVCO via email
at [email protected].
“We’ve all seen the commercial featuring the big red
‘Easy’ button,” said Cmdr.
James Stockman, NAVCO director. “Think of the NAVCO
Media Outreach program as

to their home towns across

creates more marketability
when highlighting personal
achievements than a community’s local tie with a Sailor

is one of many NAVCO employs to increase Americans’
understanding of the Navy, its

3 tips for retiring out of state
Retirees flock to Florida and
Arizona for year-round sunshine
and golf, but all things considered, they’re not the best states
for happy golden years, according to a new survey.
Along with average number
of sunny days, factor in cost of
living, residents’ sense of wellbeing, quality of health-care,
crime and, yes, humidity, and
the best destination is (surprise!)
South Dakota, according to a
2014 Bankrate report.
“As this report correctly suggests, pre-retirees need to consider a lot more than snow days
and tradition,” says Rodger
Friedman, founding partner and
wealth manager at Steward Partners Global Advisory and author
of “Forging Bonds of Steel,”
com), a guide to developing an
excellent working relationship
with your financial advisor.
“Different states have different
tax laws and other regulations
that can have a major impact on
your retirement funds. You need
to be aware of these as you plan
for where you want to live and
how you want to live.”
Whether or not you’re considering one of the other top four
“best states to retire” – Colorado,
Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming, in that order – here are
three tips for planning ahead:
• New state – new income tax
rules. Get to know them!
Familiarize yourself with the
tax laws of the state you’re considering for your new home. Two
of the top five on Bankrate’s list
– South Dakota and Wyoming
-- have no state income tax,
along with five others: Nevada
(No. 18 on the list), Texas (19),
Washington (22), Florida (39),
and Alaska (48.).
Also, an itemized deduction
in one state may not be an itemized deduction in another. If
you use the long form (1040) to
file federal income taxes, hire a
reputable, experienced CPA for
guidance.
Look into how your new state
taxes retirement income. States
differ on taxing interest income
from tax-free municipal bonds.
Some states give tax credits
for pensions; treat public and
private pensions differently; or
offer federal, military or blanket
exclusions.
• If you’re married, are you
moving to a community property state?
There are nine community
property states – those that divide all maritally-acquired assets
and debt 50:50 in the event of
divorce. (Exceptions include an
inheritance or gift received by
one spouse and maintained separately in that spouse’s name.)
Community property states are
Idaho, New Mexico, Texas,
California, Arizona, Wisconsin,
Nevada, Louisiana, and Washington. Consulting with an estate
planning attorney regarding how
this issue may affect you may be
money very well spent.
• Have a lawyer review your
estate planning documents.
Your existing estate planning
documents should be reviewed
by a lawyer in your new state
of residence because statutes
differ on the types of documents required and the powers bestowed upon each. For
example, states are all over the
map regarding the validity of a
power of attorney document and
the powers that may or may not
be conveyed.
“During their careers, their
‘acquiring wealth years,’ many
people live in places that have
lots of jobs – and the higher
cost of living that goes along
with that,” Friedman says. “In
retirement, many of them want
to move to a state where they can
enjoy the same or an even better
lifestyle with less money.
“For that, it’s essential to
consider not only the cost of
living but the state laws that
affect your accumulated wealth
and income.”
DANTES celebrates 40 years of service
by Thom Seith
The Defense Activity for NonTraditional Education Support
(DANTES) commemorated 40
years of service by holding an
education celebration at the Naval
Air Technical Training Center
(NATTC) on board Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Dec. 2.
future.”
During the NATTC event, Sailors from the Pensacola military
complex had the opportunity to
get valuable information on educational programs and query experts
on how to incorporate education
and certifications into their career
goals.
More than 1,000 people attended
the event, which provided education information from DANTES,
the Navy Advancement Center,
Troops for Teachers, the Navy College Program, Navy Credentialing
Opportunities On-Line (Navy
COOL), and the United Services
Military Apprenticeship Program
(USMAP).
Aviation Electronics Technician
Airman Lisa Kennedy, a student
at NATTC, was grateful for the
opportunity to talk to the experts
from DANTES.
DANTES and their partner organizations help service members
and veterans pursue their educational goals and earn degrees or
certifications.
Capt. John Jones, Naval Education and Training Command, chief
of staff, served as the guest speaker
for the celebration.
“DANTES’ information, resources and programs have played
an integral part in the career success
of tens of thousands of Sailors including myself,” said Jones. “We’d
like to express our gratitude for
the 40 years DANTES has been
serving the educational needs of
service members throughout the
Department of Defense and wish
them even more success in the
“When I joined the Navy, I
already had a bachelor’s degree
in history, but wanted to continue
my education and possibly go to
law school,” said Kennedy. “With
all the overwhelming information
during recruit training and indoctrination, it was wonderful to be able
to obtain all this good information
in a more relaxed setting with such
knowledgeable people.
“Mr. Stahl, the DANTES deputy director recommended getting
guidance from the Navy College
Program counselors, taking College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
tests and utilizing the Tuition Assistance (TA) Program to help me
reach my goal,” she added.
Additional helpful information
provided by DANTES during the
event included academic accreditation, college financial aid (scholarships, grants and loans), how to
search for the right college, virtual
libraries and free online books, and
educational goal planning.
One part of educational goal
planning is consolidating and
translating military experience
into college credits. Senior Chief
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Aircraft Handling), Johnny Harris, a
NATTC data metrics analyst, received guidance on his educational
goal planning from Sandra L. Winborne, manager, Military Evaluations Program for DANTES.
“Dr. Winborne explained to
me how the Joint Service Transcript (JST) documents American
Council on Education (ACE)
recommended college credit for
military training and occupational
experience, and that academically,
the JST is an accepted record validated by ACE,” said Harris. “This
and other information she provided
has helped me focus on my goals
of earning a general education degree, participating in the Troops to
Teachers certification program, and
eventually teaching at a Reserve
Officers Training Corps unit,”
he said.
DANTES is a Department of
Defense agency that provides
leadership and support through
partnerships across the education
community and is located on board
Saufley Field in Pensacola.

“Experiences are much more
memorable, useful, and enjoyable--and often, they’re more in
line with our values too.”
Cygan points out that you can
share many holiday experiences
with your loved ones for little to
no cost, which might be a relief
to everyone involved. Even if
you do choose to spend money,
focusing on “gifting” an experience is often much more meaningful than placing an item in a
wrapped box--and it has a more
personal touch.
If you’d like to get off the
gift-exchange merry-go-round
this year, read on for 12 of
Cygan’s suggestions for giving
your friends and family the gift
of experience:
Spend a morning baking cookies together with your foodie
friends. You can focus on old
favorites or try new recipes. “After baking, the cookies can be
packaged with holiday ribbons,
providing the added benefit that
everyone goes home with several types of cookies to enjoy or
give as gifts,” Cygan says.
“Give” it forward. Together
with family or friends, choose a
local charity or “adopt” a family that is less fortunate. Spend
a half-day shopping for food
and/or gifts, then wrap them and
deliver them. Or volunteer at a
soup kitchen, hospital, nursing
home, or homeless shelter. Giving your time to others who are
less fortunate will help you to
focus on gratitude.

The Navy and Marine
Corps Public Health Center
(NMCPHC) announced the
launch of its redesigned and
enhanced Health Promotion and
Wellness (HPW) Wounded, Ill,
and Injured (WII) website Dec.
4, as part of its ongoing HPW
program.
nators as well as WII service members, their
families, caregivers, and others who support
and assist service members during the recovery
and transition process such as medical providers
and case managers.
HPW reorganized the website into 15 primary topic areas and created more than 100
new resources, tools, and materials to meet
the information and resource needs of WII
stakeholders.
The website was created in
support of Navy Medicine’s
commitment to care for warfighters recovering from a wound, illness, or injury, no matter where
and when sustained.
“As a partner of the 21st Century Sailor and Marine Initiative,
NMCPHC is committed to supporting Sailors and Marines returning to duty or transitioning to
civilian life,” said Capt. Scott R.
Jonson, NMCPHC commanding
officer. “Through this HPW WII
program, we aim to encourage
and empower WII Sailors and
Marines to engage with their
health care and support teams
to achieve optimal health and
maintain well-being.”
The HPW WII website offers
information, resources, and tools
to support the healing, rehabilitation, recovery, and resilience of
wounded, ill, or injured Sailors
and Marines.
Health and wellness topics
align with the priorities outlined in the National Prevention
Strategy, including active living,
Based on the success and efficacy of the
Health Promotion Toolbox, a WII Toolbox was
also launched to provide both promotional and
practical tools.
The promotional tools focus on helping
health educators, providers, and case managers
reach the WII audience while the practical tools
aim at equipping WII service members in their
daily battle for healing and recovery. The tools
span six key topics: nutrition, relationships and
intimacy, caregiver support, depression, sleep
and integrative and complementary medicine.

at Fort Rosecrans.
“This is the ninth year Fort

for Wreaths Across America San

our largest year in both wreaths

Between Fort Rosecrans and

are preparing the next generation of warfighters. They truly are
the best of the best.”

USS Sterett (DDG 104) and

PLA(N) commenced a bilateral
counter-piracy exercise, U.S.China Counter-Piracy Exercise
15, off the coastal states in the
Gulf of Aden and the Horn of
Africa, Dec 11.
Aiming to promote partnership, strength and presence,
the exercise includes combined
visit, board, search, and seizure
(VBSS) operations, communication exchanges, and various
other aspects of naval operations. This exercise represents
a long-standing united front
toward counter-piracy operations shared by these two world
powers.
“The exercise allows us to
address our common regional
and global interest,” said Capt.
Doug Stuffle, commander, Navy
Destroyer Squadron (DESRON)
1. “It helps both nations pursue a
healthy, stable, reliable and continuous bilateral relationship.”
“Piracy is a long-standing
problem, world-wide,” said
Cmdr. Theodore Nunamaker,
commanding officer, USS Sterett (DDG 104). “It has long
been recognized as a problem
that requires an internationalcooperative solution. Certainly
the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR (area of

economic impact. Although
much of the world’s population
will never encounter piracy, it
has an impact on everyone, by
increasing the cost of goods that
are being shipped from place to

Stuffle expressed that Sterett’s

U.S. and China conducted similar training Aug. 20 - 25, 2013.
“These bi-lateral exercises
help us establish clear paths for

us mitigate risk and allow us to

in the international community
to help us work together to deal
with transnational threats. In the
end, we look to create a peaceful, stable and secure maritime

2014. She entered and won her first singing competition at age eight and has won
14 championships since then. Trinidad
performed at the 2012 California State

Omarr’s weekly
ARIES (March 21-April 19):
Networking can rope in golden
opportunities in the week ahead.
You may feel pressured to perform at a high level or to adapt to
new technologies. New contacts
and reliable advisors will help
you make progress.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20):
Clear planning may help you to
focus your energies. A proposal
about joint finances or possessions can move forward during
the week to come. Those who
care about you the most are willing to wait for the best.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20):
Your initiative and willpower
give you an advantage in the
week ahead. This can be an
excellent time to make promises
and commitments, or to make
definitive decisions about a
business partner or romantic
relationship.
CANCER (June 21-July 22):
You may strive to attain material
things in the week to come, but a
compassionate act can alter the
results. This is a great time to
make a favorable impression on
a new friend or to participate in
group activities.
Astrological
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Your
theme song might be “getting to
know you” as the week unfolds.
Other people may be glad to
meet you and emulate your attitudes. Since you have more
influence than usual, this is a
good week to ask for support.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22):
Let your friendliness shine like
a beacon. If you show yourself
to be an eager participant in interactive activities, you could get
invited to the best places. Make
crucial family decisions in the
week ahead.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22):
Implement prettier philosophical principles. This is a good
time to reassess your goals and
develop more admirable ideals. A wise advisor might give
you an inspiring idea that you
can use for your benefit in the
week ahead.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21):
If you expect the best, you set
the stage so that you’ll surely
get it. Keep your mind trained
on attaining your most spectacular dreams in the week ahead.
You’re wiser than usual about
money and possessions.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
forecast VIDEOVIEW
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): New friends may
figure in your future. Your dissatisfaction with certain situations in the week ahead can be
assuaged with a little help from
your friends. Use financial problems as a catalyst of change.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.
19): You’ll find you have extra
drive and determination to put
your dreams into action this
week. At the same time, you may
find it necessary to compromise
and participate as a member of a
team in order to get ahead.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18): Join in as a team member. Someone might take his
or her cues from Tom Sawyer
in the week ahead and show
you that painting a fence can
be fun. You’ll find great companions during a work-related
project.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20):
You should have all your favorite
ducks lined up in a row. You’ll
receive appreciation for your
talent for organization. Concentrate on keeping your promises
in the week ahead and you will
get ahead.
STARTING THIS WEEK:
“THE GOOD LIE”: Reese Witherspoon spent this movie year
in different types of roles, one
example being this moving, factinspired drama about the Lost
Boys, youths from Sudan who
fled their country’s civil war to
seek safe refuge. It was found by
the young people at this story’s
heart in Kansas, where an emotionally guarded social worker
(Witherspoon) tries to place them
in jobs, though their skills and
knowledge of the outside world
are extremely limited. Corey
Stoll (“House of Cards”) plays
her boss, and the cast also includes several of the real-life Lost
Boys. The screenplay is by Margaret Nagle, who also developed
television’s current “Red Band
Society.” DVD extras: “makingof” documentary; deleted scenes.
*** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on
Blu-ray and On Demand)
“PRIDE”: A remarkable show
of support - which occurred in
real life - is spotlighted in this
tale of a group of gay activists
that took definite, demonstrable
action to help striking miners
and their families in the United
Kingdom of the mid-1980s. They

in the cast. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; deleted and
extended scenes. *** (R: AS, P)
(Also on Blu-ray)
“THE TRIP TO ITALY”: “The
Trip” was just the beginning for
British humorists Steve Coogan
(“Philomena”) and Rob Brydon,
who reunite for another journey
in this largely improvised comedy, though director Michael Winterbottom did provide them with
the outline of a script. The duo
travels along the coast of Italy,
conversing about a broad variety
of subjects while sampling food
and lodging for columns they’re
meant to write ... and trying to
keep from getting on each other’s
nerves. The film is excerpted
from a longer series that was
televised by England’s BBC. ***
(Also on Blu-ray.) New releases
are on the light side this holiday
week, so here’s a look at several
seasonal classics:
“IT’S A WONDERFUL
LIFE”: Upon its release, this
Frank Capra-directed 1946 classic had a lukewarm box-office
performance upon its release
that gave no indication it would
become as popular as it long as
it has been ... its plentiful television exposure being a huge
factor. James Stewart makes the
perfect George Bailey, the hapless Bedford Falls citizen whose
experience of seeing how life
would be without him has been
echoed by countless TV-series
episodes. Donna Reed, Lionel
Barrymore and - as wing-earning
angel Clarence - Henry Travers
lend great support. DVD extras:
theatrical trailer; “making-of”
by Jay Bobbin
documentary. **** (Not rated)
(Also on Blu-ray)
“WHITE CHRISTMAS”: As
comfortable as an active fireplace
on a cold winter’s night, this
tuneful 1954 retooling of the
12-years-earlier “Holiday Inn” now available in a “Diamond Anniversary Edition” - makes great
use of its Irving Berlin score.
Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye
make an ideal team as military
veterans who become successful
entertainment partners, then use
their talents to help their former
commander (Dean Jagger) reenergize his failing resort. Rosemary Clooney - aunt of George
- and Vera-Ellen are charmers
as the siblings who distract the
guys. DVD extras (“Anniversary
Edition”): two theatrical trailers;
audio commentary by Clooney;
seven “making-of” documentaries; Christmas televisionshow appearances by Crosby and
Kaye; photo galleries. **** (Not
rated) (Also on Blu-ray)
“A CHRISTMAS STORY”:
There’s never a doubt this holiday
favorite will come back around,
thanks to its annual 24-hour
marathon on television. Anyone
who ever desired that one special holiday gift can empathize
with Ralphie (Peter Billingsley),
author-narrator Jean Shepherd’s
young alias who desperately
wants a Red Ryder BB gun - the
one his mother (Melinda Dillon)
warns will “shoot your eye out.”
Always deserving of citing is
Darren McGavin as the gruff
dad who never actually curses,
though it sure sounds like it. DVD
extras: theatrical trailer; three
“making-of” documentaries;
audio commentary by Billingsley and director and co-writer
Bob Clark. *** (PG: P) (Also
on Blu-ray)
Stuff
continued from page 8
ask everyone to bring their
favorite holiday food--maybe a
family recipe from your parents
or grandparents,” she suggests.
“This nostalgic theme can bring
back rich memories as you honor
loved ones and your family’s
heritage.”
Get creative. If you and a
friend or family member are both
creative (or would like to become
more so!), make plans to do an
art, craft, or home-improvement project together. “You
could make holiday wreaths or
paint mugs at a local pottery
studio, for example,” Cygan
suggests. “And every time you
use these items in the years to
come, you’ll be reminded of
the fun time you spent creating
them--and of your valuable
friendship.”
Make good on “We always
said we’d...” Instead of exchanging gifts, do something
you and a friend have always
said you’d do together--but
have never managed to find
time for. “Note that this event
or outing doesn’t have to happen during the holidays,” Cygan
says. “For instance, buying
tickets to a summer concert
by the band you both loved as
teenagers counts!”
Go to class. Take a cooking
class, sewing class, self-defense
class, painting class, wine-tasting class--whatever you and
the other person would enjoy.
“Learning a new skill together
is a great way to deepen your
relationship with another person,” Cygan comments. “And
choosing a class that reflects the
other person’s skills and desires
is a wonderful way to say, ‘I’ve
been paying attention to what
you enjoy and what’s important
to you.’”
Become a day tripper. No
matter where you live, Cygan
guarantees there’s something
interesting within driving distance. Think museums, landmarks, shopping destinations,
unique restaurants, wineries,
etc. Why not visit one of them
with a friend?
“Odds are you can even find
something free so the only cost
will be gas,” she says. “Even
if the day trip you choose is
cheesy and ‘touristy,’ and even
if it’s something you’ve done
before, you’ll still enjoy the
time spent together. Be sure
to snap photos so you can remember the best parts of your
outing.”
Make them a member. If a
“big” gift is within your budget
but you don’t want to spend
money on something that will
end up gathering dust in a closet, Cygan suggests buying the
other person a membership to
a zoo, theme park, or museum,
or season tickets to the theater,
orchestra, or a sports team’s
home games.
This gives the person the opportunity to experience something they love throughout the
year--to quote a cliché, it’s a
‘gift that keeps on giving,’”
she observes. “And every time
the recipient ‘uses’ your gift,
he or she will be reminded of
your thoughtfulness and of your
relationship.”
Take care of some chores.
Most of Cygan’s suggestions
have to do with giving or sharing experiences...but relieving
someone of an unwanted experience (like cleaning or painting
the kitchen!) works too. If it’s in
your budget, you could “gift” a
repair person or a maid service,
or purchase a gift certificate to a
restaurant, for example.
“Along the same lines, if
you know a family with young
children, you could offer your
babysitting services for free so
that the parent or parents can
enjoy a few evenings out,” she
adds. “If you have kids yourself,
you’ll know just how appreciated this gift will be.”
Mark your calendars. Do you
and a friend, despite your best
intentions, never quite manage
to get together so that you can
catch up over a meal? If so, give
the gift of time.
“Give your friend a 2015
calendar and tell him or her
that you want to fill up one afternoon or evening each month
with a shared meal, movie,
drink, walk, or cup of coffee,”
Cygan suggests. “Remember,
what gets planned gets done-as opposed to those vague ‘we
should really see each other
more often’ intentions. You’ll
both be enjoying the gift of a
deeper friendship by the end of
next year.”
Laugh together. Invite friends
over to watch (or stream) a
funny holiday movie--and make
sure to provide cider, hot chocolate, and a bottomless bowl of
popcorn. Not only is this more
affordable than buying gifts
for each person, your friends
are more likely to enjoy themselves.
might just start your family’s
new favorite tradition.”

“Even better, make this a
recurring event,” Cygan suggests. “Throughout 2015, ask
each person to bring his or her
favorite comedy to share with
the group. Or institute a theme,
like old Woody Allen movies or
hit ‘80s comedies.”

kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Dec. 23 at Qualcomm Stadium and will be televised on
ESPN.
The Aztecs finished the regular season 7-5 overall and 5-3 in
the West Division of the Mountain West. Navy is currently 6-5
on the year with one game still
remaining as the Midshipmen
play Army on Saturday, Dec.
13 at 12 noon (PT) in Baltimore
in a game that will be televised
nationally by CBS.
“This is a fantastic pairing of
two teams that are well-known
and loved, especially right here
in San Diego,” said Mudd. “It
sets up to be a great game and
we anticipate a fantastic turnout for this 10th anniversary
game.”
For San Diego State, Donnel
Pumphrey leads a team that
has won all seven of its games
by double digits this year and
is making its fifth consecutive
bowl appearance after going to
just five bowls over its previous 43 seasons. Pumphrey has
set an Aztec sophomore record
with 1,755 rushing yards and 19
touchdowns, averaging 146.2
yards per game and 6.9 yards
per carry. Pumphrey, who was
on the Doak Walker Award
Watch List and was a first-team
all-MW selection, heads into the
Poinsettia Bowl just 87 yards
short of the SDSU single-season
school record (George Jones,
1,842 in 1995). Terry Poole (left
tackle) was named a secondteam all-MW selection, while
Darrell Green (right guard) was
an honorable mention pick.
The San Diego State defense
has been one of the best in the
nation this year, ranking 15th in
points allowed (20.1), 20th in
passing yards allowed (192.0)
and 40th in rushing defense
(145.6), and going eight straight
games keeping its opponent
below 400 yards of total offense. Both Aztec cornerbacks
- Damontae Kazee (52 tackles,
13 PBU, 1 INT) and J.J. Whittaker (58 tackles, 6 PBU, 2
INT) - were named secondteam all-MW, while Calvin
Munson (78 tackles, 10.5 TFL,
4.0 sacks, 4 INT, 2 FF), Josh
Gavert (78 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 4
PBU), Malik Smith (58 tackles,
7 PBU, 3 INT) and Alex Barrett
(39 tackles, 9.0 TFL, 3.0 sacks)
were each honorable-mention
selections. SDSU has 68 tackles
for loss on the season by 20 different players and 24 sacks by
12 different players.
“Very few teams are going
to a fifth straight bowl game
and our players have worked
hard to get here,” said Aztecs
coach Rocky Long. “It shows
how successful our program
has become.
“I’ve been lucky enough to
have gone to several bowls
and our fifth-year seniors have
been to five straight bowls. We
haven’t been to any of them
that even match the Poinsettia
Bowl in terms of hospitality
and things to do. We know how
well they treat us. Our players
are excited about being home as
well so their family and friends
can watch them play.”
The Mids have won four of
their last five contests and are
led by quarterback Keenan
Reynolds. Reynolds has rushed
for 61 touchdowns in his career,
the most in NCAA history by
a quarterback and the seventh
most by a player at any position. This year, despite missing
two games due to injury, he
has rushed for 1,082 yards and
20 touchdowns on 205 carries.
Senior fullback Noah Copeland
is also having a standout campaign, rushing for 859 yards and
five touchdowns on 105 carries. Copeland is averaging an
incredible 8.2 yards per carry.
Navy enters Saturday’s contest
leading the country in rushing,
averaging a school record 357.8
yards per game.
Defensively, the Mids are
led by senior linebacker Jordan
Drake and sophomore linebacker Daniel Gonzales. Drake has
recorded a team-high 85 tackles
and forced two fumbles, while
Gonzales has recorded 73 tackles and picked off two passes.
Senior safety and co-captain
Parrish Gaines leads the Mids in
interceptions with three.
Navy head coach Ken Niuma-
talolo (55-35) is one win away
from becoming the school’s
all-time wins leader.
“I am happy for our young
men and our program that we
are going back to a bowl game
for the 11th time in the last 12
years,” said Navy head football
coach Ken Niumatalolo. “Right
now our only focus is to finish
out the regular season on the
right note by beating Army, but
we are thrilled to be going to
San Diego.”

Your Invitation to a Fun & Romantic Getaway
AutoMatters+: Season’s Greetings – San Diego Style
Inevitably at this time of year,
televised severe weather reports
from across the country show
cars slipping and sliding across
icy streets, stuck in deep snowdrifts or stalled in floods. That
reminds me how fortunate those
of us who live here in San Diego
are. This is a place where people
travel on vacation to escape all
of that – and there is so much to
see and do!
As I learned at celebratebalboapark.org, 100 years ago,
in honor of the completion of
the Panama Canal, San Diego
held a yearlong celebration of
its innovation, architecture,
culture and natural beauty. In
2015 San Diego will doing it
again, this time in celebration
of the Balboa Park Exposition Centennial. Special events
– some of which are already
underway, include: “San Diego
Invites the World: The 1915
Expo” at the Veterans Museum
& Memorial Center; “The International Cultural Plaza 2015,”
presented by the World Beat
Center; “The Discovery of King
Tut: His Tomb, His Treasures,
The Breathtaking Recreation”
at the San Diego Natural History Museum; “Ingenious! The
World of Dr. Seuss” at the San
Diego History Center; “Centennial Commemoration Concerts”
by the Spreckels Organ Society;
the energy efficient LED “Light
the Park Project,” with the support of San Diego Gas & Electric
and the City of San Diego; “All
People’s Celebration” by alliance San Diego; “2theXtreme
– MathAlive!” at the San Diego
Air & Space Museum; “Human
Rights Watch Film Festival;” “A
Century of Dance” presented by
the San Diego Civic Dance Arts
program; “Balboa Park at 100”
presented by the San Diego Art
Institute; “Imaginate” at the
Reuben H. Fleet Science Center;
the “7th Annual Fairy Tales in
the Park” by the San Diego Civic
Youth Ballet; “A Garden Party
for the Century;” and so much
more. For additional information, visit celebratebalboapark.

As is our tradition, earlier this
month the holiday season in San

Nights in Balboa Park – two
days and evenings of festive en-

325,000 visitors enjoyed December Nights this year.
in San Diego.
That was only the beginning
of the holiday treat that we
boats lavishly decorated according to a new theme each year.

also close to where I watched the
Red Bull Air Races a few years
ago. The backdrop of the downtown San Diego city skyline is
spectacular.
The theme for this year’s San
Diego Bay Parade of Lights was
Children’s Stories. As the boats
slowly motored past the San Diego waterfront on the far side of
the bay, we enjoyed a flotilla of
brightly illuminated Christmas
trees and storybook characters.
Then the boats made a wide turn
and slowly headed back, this
time to parade in front of us.
San Diego Bay Parade of Lights - snowman & sleigh
With that behind us, I made
plans to go on a photo shoot last
Sunday with the Pacific Photographic Society. The event was
called Impromptu Sunset Shoot
Coronado. Our plan was to shoot
the San Diego waterfront skyline
from Coronado as the sun was
setting. It was beautiful to see
the ever-changing reflections
on the tall buildings – a sight
which is repeated on most days
were about to enjoy. As it got
dark, people of all ages began to
gather on the beach in Coronado
for the 43rd Annual San Diego
Bay Parade of Lights.
According to www.sdparadeoflights.org, the San Diego Bay
Parade of Lights is a time-honored holiday tradition brought
to San Diego by the boating
community ... with more than 80
Lights is held two consecutive
Sundays each year in December.
The parade proceeds from Shelter Island past Harbor Island, the
Embarcadero, Seaport Village
and Ferry Landing in Coronado.
That’s where we were, right beside Ferry Landing and in front
of Il Fornaio restaurant. Nearby
was a popular, tourist-oriented,
boutique-style shopping center
with plenty of parking. That is
Not only were there colorful lights and decorations, but
music, too. A least one of the
boats had a large choir aboard.
They entertained appreciative
spectators with Christmas carols.
Another popular boat was named
“Whoville” for the fictional town
in Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch
Stole Christmas.” The spectators applauded and cheered as
the familiar soundtrack played.
The boats made a couple of slow
passes around the bay and then
this holiday treat was over.
I wish you all the very best of

INTO THE WOODS
The Interview
Dave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapoport
are the team behind the popular tabloid-TV show
“Skylark Tonight.” After learning that North Korea’s
Kim Jong Un is a huge fan of the show, they
successfully set up an interview with him, hoping to
legitimize themselves as actual journalists. However,
as Dave and Aaron prepare for their journey to
Pyongyang, the CIA steps in, recruits them, and
assigns them an incredible mission: Assassinate the
dictator.
