KNIGHTLY NEWS Morrison Zion Lutheran School December 18, 2014 Volume 12 Issue 15 “Assisting Parents to Glorify God as we Grow and Go with the Gospel” INSIDE THIS ISSUE Keep a Careful Watch John was a night watchman. Although many people teased him about his job, he took it very seriously. He carefully watched the video monitors, and when the time came, he diligently made his rounds checking all the doors. After ten years of service, the president of the company called him into his office. There he openly praised John for his untiring diligence. During those ten years there were no break-ins, thefts, or vandalism. Not only did John receive an award for his faithful service, he also received a bonus and a raise. When asked to say something, all John could muster was, "I was only doing my job." John's story needs to be my story. Jesus has given me a clear command. He warns me to keep a careful watch. So, my first priority is to be ready for the day of his return whenever it may come. This means being prepared in the evening, at midnight, or at dawn. The only way I can be ready and keep a careful watch is through the working of Jesus' precious gifts. Through his undeserved love and promises I am refreshed every day. I am always ready for the next challenge. Through his never-failing strength and presence I am renewed. I can persevere through every confrontation. Through his unconditional promises and forgiveness I am reconciled. I can live with the confidence nothing will every separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus my Savior. Yes, it can be challenging to keep a careful watch and always be ready. The devil constantly seeks to distract me, tempt me, and lead me into a false sense of security. Jesus, on the other hand, is always there to overcome the devil’s deceitful devices. Because of Jesus’ ever-present help and strength, I can live with confidence and courage. I can also keep a careful watch for his return. Mark 13:35-37 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone, 'Watch!'" This devotion comes from “Today’s Devotion” a devotion subscription from WELS. Page 11 Fostering Good Sportsmanship The Need for Good Sportsmanship John Churdar, Ed.D. The late Vince Lombardi, former great coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins, was famous for his statement, "Winning isn’t the most important thing; it’s the only thing!" Shortly before he died, he looked back at the quote and declared, "I wish I’d never said it. I meant the effort. I sure didn’t mean for people to crush human values and morality." Yet many coaches on the youth-sport, high school, college, and professional levels have adopted a "win at any cost" philosophy. Situation ethics abound as players and coaches are willing to do "whatever it takes to win." But the secular philosophy of winning at any cost has no place in the Christian school. The athletic program of a Christian school is probably the most visible part of the school in the community, and we need to strive to have the best possible testimony for the Lord. Good sportsmanship should have a higher priority than winning for the Christian school. I do not mean to imply that winning isn’t important, but the testimony of those involved in the athletic program is more important than the win-loss record. The Meaning of Sportsmanship It has been said that good sportsmanship is the Golden Rule in action. We should treat others as we would like to be treated. The Christian competitor should desire for his opponent what he desires for himself: a fair, hard-fought contest. He should play within the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. The desire to win, as important as it is, cannot take precedence over honesty and principled action for the Christian. Fair play and ethical behavior should be evident in every athletic contest, but especially between two Christian schools. Edited from: https://www.bjupress.com/resources/articles/t2t/need-for-good-sportsmanship.php What Is Good Sportsmanship? Good sportsmanship is when teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials treat each other with respect. Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Kids who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — whether they win or lose a game. Parents can help their kids understand that good sportsmanship includes both small gestures and heroic efforts. It starts with something as simple as shaking hands with opponents before a game and includes acknowledging good plays made by others and accepting bad calls gracefully. Displaying good sportsmanship isn't always easy: It can be tough to congratulate the opposing team after losing a close or important game. But the kids who learn how to do it will benefit in many ways. Here are some suggestions on how to build sportsmanship in your kids: Unless you're coaching your child's team, you need to remember that you're the parent. Shout words of encouragement, not directions, from the sidelines (there is a difference!). Keep your comments positive. Don't bad-mouth coaches, players, or game officials. If you have a serious concern about Page 12 the way that games or practices are being conducted, or if you're upset about other parents' behavior, discuss it privately with the coach or with a league official. Continued on page 13 After a competition, it's important not to dwell on who won or lost. Instead, try asking, "How did you feel you did during the game?" If your child feels weak at a particular skill, like throwing or catching, offer to work on it together before the next game. Applaud good plays no matter who makes them. Set a good example with your courteous behavior toward the parents of kids on the other team. Congratulate them when their kids win. Remember that it's your kids, not you, who are playing. Don't push them into a sport because it's what you enjoyed. As kids get older, let them choose what sports they want to play and decide the level of commitment they want to make. Keep your perspective. It's just a game. Even if the team loses every game of the season, it's unlikely to ruin your child's life or chances of success. Look for examples of good sportsmanship in professional athletes and point them out to your kids. Talk about the bad examples, too, and why they upset you. Finally, don't forget to have fun. Even if your child isn't the star, enjoy the game while you're thinking of all the benefits your child is gaining — new skills, new friends, and attitudes that can help all through life. http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/behavior/sportsmanship.html —————————————— Directions to Trinity, Brillion: 601 E National Ave. 920-756-3738 Driving Time: About 20 minutes Left out of parking lot.
