Wishing the best of the season, the happiest of Holidays, and a New
Year filled with love to all from the Blue Skies of Texas Staff!
Sponsor Seminar - When we updated the Sponsor Program about three years
ago, we had a clear vision on how Sponsors would help new residents acclimate to
our community. Even with that vision and the aid of the Sponsor book, there is a
wide variety in the amount of support sponsors are giving new residents. We’ve
recognized it depends a lot on the needs of the resident and the motivation and
knowledge of the sponsor. Many Sponsors have picked up facts and some tips to
help new residents get comfortable, and it’s time we all get together to share some
of our experiences and information. Don Hallager, Faye Miller, and I have been
managing the Sponsor Program and we will host a Sponsor Seminar in the
Roadrunner Lounge on Friday, Jan 9, from 2-4pm. We’ll focus on the details and
techniques for sponsoring. If you are already a sponsor, or would like to be one, it
is important we see you there in January. We’ll be placing an

Change To HEB Location On The Last Friday Of The Month – At the request of
several residents, starting on Friday, Dec 26 we will go to the Valley Hi HEB on the

departure/return times. Let’s give it a try and see what we think.
Beauty Shop Closed Friday, Dec 26 – The ladies will be enjoying a long Holiday
weekend. They’ll have you all spruced up before Christmas and will return in time to
have you aglow for the New Year, too!
Safety – Seems an odd time of year for this announcement, but we’ve had snake
sightings. Just because it’s winter (a loose term here in south Texas) doesn’t mean
snakes aren’t on the move. Please be cautious when reaching into/stepping into
areas you can’t clearly see.

Please join us in welcoming Cyndee Frey to BST West on Friday, Jan 9, at 10am
in CC1. Cyndee has taken on the role of Freedom House Manager and comes to us
with an impressive background and qualifications. As a Registered Nurse, with a
Graduate Degree in Organizational Development, Cyndee has extensive
experience working with seniors and their families who are affected by dementia.
Cyndee’s background includes regional positions with national assisted living and
memory care corporations and direct leadership of stand-alone memory care
facilities. Cyndee holds a certification from the Validation Training Institute as a
Validation Worker and Validation Group Practitioner. This specialized skill,
developed by Naomi Feil, M.S.W., promotes verbal and behavioral approaches
when working with individuals with dementia. Cyndee is knowledgeable and
passionate about memory care. She believes…“people with dementia deserve to
have a voice – and we have to be that voice.” We are delighted to have found
Cyndee, and she is excited at the opportunities Blue Skies of Texas, and more
importantly Freedom House, offer her as she works toward further enhancing
quality of life for those we serve.

41-YEAR-RESIDENT, STILL THRIVING!

Col Berkeley and Mrs. Katie Mann were one of the many
residents who helped raise the funds to build Air Force Village, a
concept that was dear to their hearts. In 1973, they became
residents and 2014 marks 41 years with us for Mrs. Mann. After
her beloved husband passed away in 1990, she continued to
reap the benefits of life here – playing her grand piano, dancing
and enjoying a circle of devoted friends. This year, her niece,
Judy Pinckard, felt Mrs. Mann would be better served in

Freedom House where she could get 24/7 care. After the move, Mrs. Pinckard
wrote a thank you note to us, saying, “The whole experience could have been
horrible, but thanks to everyone at Blue Skies, it was not.” Now her 98-year-young
aunt is comfortable, happy and safe, in the care of a staff that loves her like family.
Mrs. Mann is a vibrant example of how the quality of care, services, social network,
healthy nutrition and active lifestyle at Blue Skies contribute to residents’ overall
health and longevity. Mrs. Mann is pictured here dancing at a holiday gathering at
the San Antonio Country Club on Dec 4. Her partner is dance instructor Patrick
McMillan.
RESIDENTS DONATE VEHICLE TO WOUNDED WARRIOR

Residents Bill and Rosewitha Snavely donated a 1999
Toyota Avalon to the parents of 37-year-old wounded
warrior Army Staff SSG, Steve Tessitore. Tessitore is
currently recovering at SAMMC after being shot on
November 15 while on gate guard duty in Kabul,
Afghanistan. This was Tessitore’s third tour with the Oregon
National Guard. He was shot in the neck at close range with
a 9mm handgun by a local civilian. Tessitore's parents, Steve and Barbara, who are
missionaries in England, are here in San Antonio with their son as he receives
treatment. This vehicle will help the family get around during Tessitore's long
recovery.
The donation was coordinated through the Air Warrior Courage Foundation with the
assistance of Blue Skies resident Michael McGinty. The Air Warrior Courage
Foundation was formed in 1998 by military aviators to “Care for Their Own.” It grew
out of the membership of the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association (RRVA).
The purpose of the foundation is to assist disabled and/or needy war veterans and
members of the U.S. Armed Services and their dependents, and widows and
orphans of deceased veterans. They focus on active duty, guard, reserve and
retired military personnel and their families needing financial assistance for medical,
educational, and other extraordinary expenses not covered by other military,
veterans’ or charitable institutions. Many Blue Skies East and West residents are
active members of this organization and continue serving those who served.

right between his molars. I screamed, and he finished eating whatever it was!

MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Holiday Schedule – The Christmas and New Year holidays are coming up in the
next couple of weeks and the Maintenance Department will be observing those
days. The office will be closed starting Wednesday, Dec 24, at 3pm, all day
Thursday, Dec 25, and Thursday, Jan 1. As always, you should contact the front
desk if you have an emergency during this time. If you need minor maintenance
help, our office will be reopening on both of the Fridays following the holidays.
Pool Area Upgrades – Maintenance will be closing the pool area from Jan 19 –
Jan 24 to have the hot tub surface removed and re-plastered and to change out
both suspended space heaters in the pool area. The hot tub will need to remain
closed until Monday, Jan 26, to allow new plaster proper time to cure.

Texas Attorney General’s Office Presentation on Scams and Frauds – Valeria
Sartorio, Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division, will speak
to residents of Blue Skies West on Tuesday, Jan 13, 10am, CC2,3. Ms. Sartorio
will be presenting updated information on scams and frauds presently targeting over
55 adults and offer steps on what to do if you suspect, or have been a victim of a

The flu season has arrived! Here is a list of ways to protect yourself and others!
***FLU VACCINE – Make sure this is a priority on your list!
1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after you
cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizers are also effective.
2. Avoid sick people and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread
this way.
3. Teach others how to prevent the flu.
4. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your sleeve NOT your hands! Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.
5. Have an emergency plan ready in case you get sick and keep two weeks- worth
of emergency supplies, food, water and medicine at home.
IMPORTANT: If you are ill and must visit with others, please use a mask. Staying
home is the best way to prevent the further spread of the flu. Meals can be ordered
and delivered to your home. Notify your physician as soon as you start to feel ill so
you can start treatment.

FEELING GOOD

Would you like to do something to make yourself feel good and do a great service
for some deprived youngsters in the small towns of North Texas? In 1980 I
established a scholarship for needy students at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
With the help of my company and several friends (including five recent donations by
BST West residents), this scholarship fund has sent 43 students through college.
These kids were bright youngsters from places like Carey, Estellene, High Point,
Puducah, etc., little towns with no one to advocate for them and little chance of
overcoming the subtle poverty which engulfs most of the region. Recipients weren’t
eligible for assistance through many other organizations such as LULAC, La Raza,
MALDEF, or NAACP. The scholarship fund is now short of money due to the
escalating cost of education and reduced return on investments. If you would like to
help some needy youngsters go to college and assume a useful role in society,
please send your tax-deductible donation to the Sid F. Spear Scholarship Fund,
Texas Tech University, PO Box 43082, Lubbock TX 79409-3082. Many thanks and

San Fernando Cathedral Hall. The theme this year is: “Catholic-Jewish Relations
Today.” Presenters will be Raul Rodriguez and Laura Ehrenberg-Chesler, two
prominent leaders of our Catholic and Jewish communities, respectively. Cost of the
luncheon is $25 and will be charged to your account. Transportation will be
provided by Blue Skies of Texas. Please contact Abe Dreiseszun if you have any

10:15am and BST East at 10:30am.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY

It’s time to make your reservations for the New Year’s Party,
so get your group together. The reservation hot-line opened
Monday, Dec 1. The Party is free. Call either Patricia
McCarthy or Mary Lou Orbock with the number of people in
your group. We provide the dance music, ice and ice
buckets. You provide everything else for your group, table
cloth, table decorations, plates and utensils, food, snacks, drinks, etc. It’s kind of
like a picnic. Some groups have had a pot luck sit down meal prior to the start of
the music and others have had just light hors d’oeuvres or snacks. The dining room
will be open after 3pm to decorate your table as you desire. Music will be provided
by “TWO FOR THE ROAD.”
We will have tables for the singles and for those non-groups. The music starts at
9pm and ends a little after midnight. Everyone is encouraged to come and stay as
long as you like. Make sure, you get your nap.
The dress for the New Year’s Eve party will be in Honor of Our Departed Brothers &
Sisters: Military mess dress, uniform or coat and tie for gentlemen/cocktail or
Sunday dress for ladies. Call Patricia, Mary Lou or myself if you have any

AFRICAN SAFARI PRESENTATION

CALLING ALL BIRD LOVERS

Thursday, Jan 15, we will be visiting Mitchell Lake
Pelicans on Mitchell Lake at Sunset
Audubon Center, the prime birding and overall
natural area not far from Texas A&M, off Morsund
Blvd right here in San Antonio!
The day will begin with a presentation by Interim
Director, Jason St. Sauver about the history and
mission of the Center followed by a motorized tour
of the area. Cost is $5 per person if you are not a
member of Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. Wear comfortable clothes that you can
layer and bring your binoculars and bird books if you have them. We will stop for an

inexpensive lunch on the way home. For more information, contact Blues Skies

THE HAM BAND NEWS

Is that a clothes line on Towers 3 and 4 roof, or maybe it’s a wire for perching birds
to view Blue Skies West activities? No! This is a G5RV all band high frequency
antenna erected during June 2013 to support BST’s amateur radio club. This
versatile “T” shaped wire antenna was invented by Louis Varney, a British Ham,
over 40 years ago. He named his invention with his call sign-G5RV. This antenna is
connected to a coaxial cable located within the elevator shaft, and descends into
the Ham Radio Room connecting to the ICOM transmitter/receiver unit. A ground
strap connected to the rig protects the station from electrical atmospheric impulses.
These lines were installed by the former ham club, and finding them above the
ceiling tiles was a challenge! With the G5RV antenna approximately 120 feet above
ground, communication is enhanced in both signal and range. The antenna is an
essential component of any ham station, and BST West has a quality set-up thanks
to the support of the management and residents. The Ham Club will not meet
during December, but will continue its third Thursday monthly meetings in January
with the next meeting on Thursday, Jan 15, at 11:30am in the Roadrunner Lounge.

RESIDENTS’ 2015 CONCERT SERIES

Are you ready for a new season of spectacular concerts? There will be five concerts
in the 2015 season; four are locked in and the fifth one will be announced at a later
date. We start off the concert series on Sunday, Jan 18, with cellist Christine
Lamprea. Sunday, Feb 22, we are once again privileged to hold the Outreach
Concert, sponsored by the San Antonio International Piano Competition (SAIPC),
with the Bronze Medalist from the 2012 competition, Yejin Noh. We will enjoy the
piano artistry of Lennie Seidel on Sunday, May 17. He lived across the street from
Don and Ginny Hallager in Springfield, VA for 30 years. He weaves magical
melodies together from the classics, from sacred and other secular music. You will
enjoy many melodies that are familiar to you. July brings the Bazzani Jazz Trio

back to us. They make a summer afternoon of music very special; a specific date in
July has not been set. The final concert will be in the fall and will be announced at a
later date.
It is through your generous contributions to the AFV Charitable Foundation that

committee you want to have more of the highest quality music brought to Blue
Skies. Please consider an end-of-year contribution which is tax deductible, to keep

COWBOY BREAKFAST

7-9am in the Main Dining Room. This event is open to all residents and staff
alike. There will be country music by “The Stagehands” and lots of good

appetite, wear your Western duds and have some fun, because this one is
on us! Cowboy Breakfast is sponsored jointly by The Thrift Shop and Sodexo.
MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (MOAA)

The FY 2013 National Defense Authorization Act established the Military
Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission. It was tasked
to conduct a review of military compensation and benefit programs and
make recommendations to Congress and the President.
These
recommendations are not to adversely affect currently serving or retirees. Due to
the broad range of topics to be considered, especially benefits packages, it is
reasonable to expect that all of us could be affected by some of the
recommendations. The Commission’s report is due to be released on Sunday, Feb
1, and it will be interesting to see what options the recommendations suggest.
As a first reminder, save the date of Tuesday, Feb 17, Blue Skies of Texas MOAA
will hold a luncheon in the Roadrunner at BST West. Details will follow in future
articles.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Years ago, Christmastime 1992, the Tree of Lights tradition was
initiated at Air Force Village II by Col Bob Drebelbis. It is a
beautiful concept and one that has become a legend at BST
West. Residents purchase a “Tree Light” to honor a loved one,
living or deceased, for the Christmas tree in the Lobby. Bob
asked me to write an appropriate tribute for the occasion and
the following poem, also a tradition, is read at the Christmas
program. Proceeds from the contributions of “Lights” go
exclusively to the Health Care Center! Merry Christmas, dear
friends!
OUR VILLAGE II CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
When we grow old and we’ve lived a long time
And the walk up the hill is a mighty high climb…
Though our eyes are much dimmer than what they once were,
And the page of a book blends to a misty blur…
Strange as the case may seem to be,
Now is the time we can clearly see!!!
We see ourselves as we really are
When we’ve lived a lot and we’ve traveled far;
A need for each other becomes very clear…
Neighbors are precious, friendships so dear!

Monday, Dec 1, Individual - Jim Kniker and Al Buie tied for 1st with a 68. Katherine
Rajczi played poorly, but still came in 3rd. (Everyone else played worse) The others
competing were Tommy Thompson and Bill Miller. John Brooks played but did not
compete; he should have competed as he shot his age with a net of 63.

Tuesday, Dec 2, Points - Jim Kniker, Gene Kircus and Bill Miller won front, back,
and total with scores of -1, -7 and -9. Also competing were Gerhard, Dick Fouss, Al
Buie, and Taylor. Unfortunately Dick had to drop out due to a back injury. Hope
you feel better soon.
Thursday, Dec 4, No competition - The only competition today was with the
weather. Three of us showed up to play in the fog. We kept hoping some of the fog
was going to burn off, but it never did. So at the end of nine, John Brooks, Bill Miller
and Katherine Rajczi called it quits. We all get points for trying however.
Monday, Dec 8, Two Best Ball - John Brooks, Al Buie and Tom Curtis took first for
front, back, and total scoring -12, -7 and -19. Team 3: Jim Kniker, Gene Kircus,

language of Mah Jongg, the fascinating game of tiles, luck and skill. Why do so
many people love MJ? Above all, it's fun! It's competitive, it's sociable, it requires
strategy, it's relaxing--and it's thrilling. There's nothing more exciting than the
moment you can finally call "MAH JONGG" and a small reward comes your way.
Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B & A Days - 2nd Wed of
each month in Card Room 112 the Card Room is located across from the Thrift
Shop on the first floor. Fridays, 1-3:30pm in CC3 and Saturdays, 1-3:30pm in

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG

December has been a great month for the Wright Pat Mah Jongg group with lots of
interesting hands. Terminews was the Hand of the Day one week, which was won
by Annie, and it was Honorettes the next time. Debbie won it first, only to have it
taken away by Katherine immediately afterward. So the prize went to Katherine
although it was almost won again by Debbie in her very last, desperate attempt late
in the afternoon. Actually, Katherine was on a roll with six wins on Dec 9. Martha
had six overall, with Lynn coming in second with five wins for the two-week total.
For the most part we aren’t very competitive (well…maybe Annie is a bit) and the
rest of the wins are spread out rather evenly between Sande, Fran and Dot. We
welcomed our newbie, Sharon, who seems to have an alarmingly good sense of the
game already. Look out world! Our party is next week - sorry, all you interested
players who procrastinated. We will continue to play through the holidays, though
and encourage you to come to CC3 on Tuesdays from about 1-3:30pm to keep
Sharon from feeling too lonely as she learns the game.
BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS

9-Ball, Tuesday, Dec 2:  Singles today with Pro beating Big John with a four ball
run and second game tomcat was setup by Lite. Then T-man beat Wild Bill with a
combo setup and Ski beat Dutch with a setup. Then Pro made a five ball run to beat
Tomcat. T-man who was snookered made a bank and combination to beat Ski. Pro
banked the 9-ball to beat T-man and advance to the finals. In the lower level there
were several outstanding wins, but T-man stopped Ski with a long combo to get to
the finals. First game, T-man made a good long combo to win but in the second
game, Pro made a small run to win the tournament.

8-Ball, Saturday, Dec 6:  With 10 players it was partners with Tomcat/T-man
beating Big John/Pro with a setup and Tommygun/Dandy Don beat Miller Lite/Knife
with a long straight shot. Then Ski/Tricky Dick put Tomcat/ T-man down with a good
bank shot and Tommy/Dandy put Ski/Tricky down with a long cut to move into the
finals. Big John/Pro did well in the lower level until they setup Ski/Tricky who moved
into contention with the unbeaten Tommy/Dandy who proceeded to make a small
run to win the tournament. Congratulations Tommygun/Dandy Don! Good shooting!
9-Ball, Tuesday, Dec 9:  Nine players for singles today. Dandy Don beat Wild Bill
with a two ball run plus a bank and Tomcat was setup by Ski. Then Big John was
setup by Miller Lite and Tommygun gave Dutch a setup combo. Pro beat Dandy
Don and then gave Dutch a setup combo. Tomcat made a good combo to beat Big
John, but then Dutch made a good bank to advance to the final round. Ski was
looking good in the lower level until Pro won with a small run and Big John beat Pro
with the most fantastic break shot with the 9-ball going like a shot to the opposite
end of the table. Then Big John made a three ball run to beat Dutch and in the final
game a lucky side bank to take the tournament. Congratulations Big John!!
8-Ball, Tuesday, Dec 13:  Today we had six players and finished quickly. First
game, Pro beat Big John with a couple runs and Miller Lite won with a setup against
Ski. Pro made a long cut to beat tomcat and Lite was setup by Tommygun. Pro then
beat Lite with a six ball run to move to the finals. In the lower level Ski lost to
Tommy and Tommy lost to Lite who wanted a second chance at the Pro. Good
game, but finally Lite setup Pro for the Championship. Thanks for coming but
please practice cut shots as you can’t move the cue ball to your next shot if you
don’t practice cuts!
