A Season of Getting: Redefining the Gifts of the Season
Advent and Christmas Worship at Reveille UMC
Friends,
It is amazing to think that the
liturgical seasons of Advent and
Christmas are already upon us!
This holy time of year is filled
with opportunities to worship at
Reveille UMC, and I would like to
personally invite you to
participate in as many of these as
you can. By my count, there are
nearly thirty worship services at
Reveille in the four-week season
of Advent and the twelve-day
season of Christmas.
Our goal this year is to redefine
some of the commonly used
words of this time of year,
specifically “gifts” and “getting.” If
the greatest gifts come to us
from God, then let us receive
with open hearts, minds, and
arms, and likewise, let us be
generous in our giving to others!
I look forward to our time
together in this blessed season of
“getting.”
Grace and peace,
Doug

OUTREACH
Give Glorious Gifts
The season of Advent is here and so is Glorious
Gifts. Glorious Gifts provides an alternative way of
shopping for Christmas gifts for family and friends.
This is a unique shopping experience held to
benefit Reveille’s outreach ministry.
Order Form: You may fill out an order form and
leave it in the church office during office hours
(Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30) by December 19.
Cards for orders placed online or delivered to the
church office will be available beginning December
1. There will be a box of completed orders in the
church office on weekdays, and it will be in the
welcome center on Sundays.
Participants may make donations towards items on
the shopping lists of our
various ministries in honor
of friends and loved ones.
In return, the participants
receive a card announcing
the donation, which they may give as a gift.
The Outreach ministries participating in Glorious
Gifts this year are: CARITAS, Stop Hunger Now,
Westview Camperships, Swansboro
School and Community, Friends of
the Homeless, Friends of Barnabas
Honduras Medical Mission Trip,
Rebuilding Together, and Youth
Mission Trips (Jeremiah Project for
middle school youth and Eastern
Shore Habitat for Humanity for
high school youth). These
ministries have made shopping
lists of various items needed for their ministries.
The items cover a wide price range.
Participants may also make a general donation
without specifying an item by noting on your order
form that it is a general donation. One hundred
percent of all money donated through Glorious
Gifts will be used to fund ALL of Reveille’s outreach
ministries.
There are three different ways to participate:
In person: there will be two Sundays, December
7 and 14, to shop in person in the welcome center
from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Each participating
ministry will have a display with information and
someone involved with the ministry to inform you
about the work done. You may place your Glorious
Gifts order and receive cards that morning.
If you have any questions about Glorious Gifts,
please contact Martha Hodges at
[email protected] or
call Katie B. Anthony at 359-6041, ext. 111.
Online: You may also place orders online at
http://reveilleumc.org/gg2014. Download the
order form, fill it out, and e-mail it to
[email protected]. You can complete
the transaction by paying through PayPal. Online
orders must be placed by December 21 in order to
receive the cards by Christmas Eve. However, if
you do not wish to receive cards, you may place
orders online until December 31.

Christmas Cards
Outreach Opportunities
Last year’s Christmas card drive was so successful
we are continuing it this year. Last December
members of Reveille wrote hundreds of cards to
Reveille members who are homebound and those
we serve in our outreach ministries. They also
collected an entire basket worth of blank
Christmas cards for Reveille’s prison ministry.
These cards will be given to women at the
correctional facility so they can send notes to their
family and loved ones. Look for lists of
recipients and a donation basket in the
welcome center December 1-21.

A Thank You from the Swansboro Fall Fest Team
Thank you for making the Swansboro Fall Festival
a success! Our Reveille congregation teamed with
leaders of Swansboro
Elementary School to provide
a fun day for families. Keatika
Hines, Community In Schools
Coordinator for Swansboro
Elementary School, praised
Reveille's presence in the
Swansboro community by
supporting teachers, providing
reading, tutoring, and music
opportunities for students, and for our efforts to
make the Fall Festival such a special day for
families.
Damien Hite, Bill Bosta, Carol Hampton, Carol
Shaughnessy, Bob Downs, Jill Gaynor, and Marielle
and Walker Speer. Also, many thanks to Reveille
members, families, and extra volunteers who came
to support this fun festival, as well as all the folks
who contributed the delicious cakes.
Two years ago, during the Swansboro Mission Trip,
Reveille youth built the cake walk platform and
bean bag toss games for the festival under the
direction of CJ Johnson, one of our youth leaders
and engineer by trade. It was wonderful to see the
joy in all of our families, youth, and grandparents
participating!
The Swansboro Elementary team provided a moon
bounce, hot dogs, hamburgers, and funnel cakes.
They also provided gold fish as prizes, which were
thrilling to winners. These efforts really kept the
crowd there!
Thank you for all of "your prayers, your presence,
your gifts, your service and your witness," which
made things run smoothly. Thank you for the
wonderful cakes, your presence in helping children
have fun playing games, for those of you who
served popcorn and for the Thompson family for
providing the popcorn machine. We also thank
those who led the cake walk, Sheelagh Davis who
brought wonderful games (with tiny beany babies
as prizes), and Mary and Carol Kern who brought
their scout troop to help.
It is wonderful to see the laughter and the sharing
of experiences as our communities continue to
have more in common. We are building
relationships that are enriching the Swansboro and
Reveille communities perhaps even beyond our
initial vision for outreach.
With great joy and thanks,
Without the help of the following people, the day
would not have been such a great success: John,
Kathy, and Grayson Rainey, Tommy Threewitts,
Sarah Anne Reed and Jean Donaldson
Swansboro Fifth Graders Learn Ballroom Dancing
Fifth grade students from Swansboro Elementary show off their ballroom dancing skills during the
Dancing Classroom Culmination Event held on November 19. Reveille UMC was proud to sponsor the
program that uses dance
as a tool to for getting
children to break down
social barriers, learn
about honor and
respect, treat others
carefully, improve
self-confidence,
communicate and
cooperate, and accept
others even if they are
different.

NURTURE/CONGREGATIONAL CARE
Prayer Opportunity in Advent
Service of Remembrance
Our theme for Advent is “A Season of Getting:
Redefining the Gifts of the Season.” We
challenge you to stay alert for the true
gifts of the season. To help you receive
the true gifts of the season, the chapel
will be open beginning at 7:30 am for
prayer and communion every weekday
from December 1 to December 24. Start each day
of the work week in Advent connecting with God,
renewing yourself, and lifting up to God other
people, our community, and our world.
Grief is a long and difficult road, especially during
the holidays. So on Sunday, December 21 at 4:00
pm in the chapel, we will hold a Service of
Remembrance. This is a time when we will
acknowledge and face the losses
and darkness in our lives. We will
read scripture, sing hymns, light
candles, read the names of our
loved ones who have died and
pray for one another. It is a time
when we seek the Light of God
for hope, comfort, and help. After
the service, we will hold a reception in the
welcome center as a way to continue to bond
together as a community and help one another.
Whatever loss you may have and however long
you have borne it, we invite you to join us.

MUSIC MINISTRIES
Catch the Christmas Spirit Through Music
Christmas Eve at Reveille!
Wednesday, December 10:
Carol at The Hermitage!
4:00 pm is our service in the fellowship hall, for
those with young children, sponsored by
children’s ministries-for details, see children’s
ministry page.
Nothing will get you more in the Christmas spirit
than caroling at The Hermitage! Enjoy Wonderful
Wednesday dinner with your friends at 6:00 pm,
then plan to carpool to The Hermitage at 6:45
pm; we should be back by 8:00 pm. Come,
witness the excitement of bringing the gift of song
to friends!
5:30 pm in the sanctuary always has great
attendance-last year we recorded 800 people!
This year we will celebrate word and table, very
much like lessons and carols. The difference:
there will be five lessons instead of nine, followed
by communion with many serving stations! You
will still hear all the same choirs: Youth choir,
sixth graders, class of 2015, youth bells, youth
instrumental ensemble, and elementary and
primary choirs; and you will get to sing lots of
Christmas carols! We will end this joyous
celebration by lighting candles, and singing Silent
Night, to welcome the Christ Child once again!
Sunday, Dec. 14: Annual Open
House and Christmas Concert!
Bring family, friends, and neighbors to
a Reveille tradition
4:30 pm: Open house in the welcome center —
Enjoy seasonal cookies and drink, and hear the
Silverleaf String Quartet play carols of the season,
including Corelli’s famous Christmas quartet!
7:30 pm takes place in our fellowship hall, led by
CrossPoint, and will also culminate in Holy
Communion.
5:30 pm: Bring everyone to the sanctuary to hear
the Christmas concert. The Reveille Ringers will
begin, followed by the chancel choirs of Shady
Grove United Methodist Church, Mechanicsville,
and Reveille. You will hear carols old and new,
from a renaissance motet to a jazz arrangement
that will remind you of Manhattan Transfer! Don’t
miss it!
11:00 pm is candlelight communion in the
sanctuary, led by our college choir and friends.
Last year, OVER 200 PEOPLE rejoiced at midnight,
as we truly “brought in” the day of Christ’s birth!
Lessons and Carols
Sunday, December 28, is officially the first
Sunday of Christmas. We will celebrate the
traditional service of nine lessons and carols at
11:00 am, and music will be led by many choirs-college, chancel, youth and friends! Come,
celebrate, sing!
Wednesday, December 17:
Children’s Choirs Christmas Program!
6:30 pm: Our five children’s choirs will present
their annual Christmas program – a must see! Our
children’s bell choirs, under the direction of
Martha Hodges, will ring traditional and fun carols.
Likewise, our three children’s vocal choirs, under
the direction of Tamara Nicely and Susan
Thompson, will sing carols of the season. This
program is certain to bring joy to your heart and
send you out with a smile!
Reveille Ringers at The Jefferson!
Yes! You read correctly--our own Reveille Ringers
will ring a noon-time concert at The Jefferson, 101
West Franklin Street, on Monday, December 29!
You will find us at the bottom of the historic staircase; we will play from noon until 12:40 pm.
There are places to sit, so please come out and
celebrate Christmas with us at one of the most
beautiful and historic places in Richmond.
The program will be preceded by Wonderful
Wednesday dinner at 5:30 pm; children and
adults who are performing, please eat first and
everyone, please make a reservation--thanks!

ADULT MINISTRIES
Sunday Evening/
Wednesday Morning
Advent Study
Would you like this Christmas
season to be especially
meaningful? Would you like to
focus on the true meaning of
Christmas instead of spending all
of your time shopping for gifts?
Beginning Sunday, November
30, and running through Sunday,
December 21, from 5-7 pm, or
Wednesday morning, December
3 – 17, from 10:00-11:30 am,
the Rev. Kelley Lane will offer a
Bible study for adults that will
help you to focus on what is truly
important for you and your
family at this time of year. The
study will take place in Room
206. You do not have to be
present for every class in
order to participate. Child care
is available.
The Prodigal God:
Recovering the
Heart of the
Christian Faith
Continues
The Rev. Douglas Forrester will
lead a class using Tim Keller’s
book The Prodigal God:
Recovering the Heart of the
Christian Faith. Keller uses the
parable of the Prodigal Son as a
means of helping those of us
living in the twenty-first
century come to a deeper
understanding of Jesus’
message of hope and salvation
contained in the gospels. The
class meets on Sundays,
November 2 through December
7, from 5-7 pm, in room 211.
Register for the class and for
child care here.
If you have questions, please
contact the Rev. Kelley Lane,
Minister of Adult Ministries at
[email protected].
Weekday Prayer and
Communion
During the season of
Advent, from December
1 – 24, Reveille will offer
a weekday service of
prayer and communion
in the chapel from 7:30 – 8:15
am. Use this time of prayer and
worship to prepare your heart
for the coming of Jesus.
College Age/Young
Adult Brunch
The Homebuilders Sunday
school class invites all college
age/young adults to a brunch
on December 21, from 9:3011:00 am, in the Reveille House
dining room. Come enjoy
delicious homemade casseroles
and treats as you catch up with
old friends and meet new ones.
For more information, please
contact Kelley Lane,
Minister of Adult Ministries, at
[email protected].
Twelfth Night
Yes, it is the title of a play by
Shakespeare, but it is also the
name for the Last Night of
Christmas. Come continue to
celebrate the birth of Jesus with
us on Tuesday, January 6, in
the chapel at 7:00 pm.
Following our joyous, childfriendly, music-filled
celebration of worship, we will
share our stories of Christmas
while enjoying hot chocolate and
cookies in the welcome center.
UMW December
General Meeting
Please join the United Methodist
Women for their December
General Meeting on Tuesday,
December 2, at 10:30, hosted
by the Susanna Wesley Circle.
In addition to our World Thank
Offering, the older children from
the Reveille Weekday School will
once again sing Christmas songs
to us.
After a brief business meeting
we will hear from the Reverend
Joe Torrence, an ordained
deacon in the United Methodist
Church, who currently serves as
the Minister to Youth and Church
Relations for United Methodist
Family Services. Joe is a 20-year
veteran in youth ministry and
believes that the call of the
church is to be in mission with
the world.
After the meeting a fabulous
lunch will be provided by Ellie
Speer for $8. Reservations must
be made to your Circle Leader by
November 25.

YOUTH MINISTRIES
The Lord is Our Light
All youth are invited to join us for our Advent Small
Group Study. We will have two small groups: one
for Middle School (led by Kate Rhodes), and one
for High School (led by Amy Crisp). We will meet in
the Youth Sunday School classrooms on Monday
nights in December at 6 pm with a small meal
provided.
During our four weeks together, we will dive
deeper into the lectionary (Scripture) readings for
this Advent season. Our goal is to bring the story
to life and make connections with our lives today.
And – who knows? – we might just learn something new about the familiar stories of Advent and
Christmas!
Our 2014 Advent study is called The Lord is Our
Light. Over four sessions we will discover the light
that began in the manger and continues as we look
with hope to Christ’s return. After all, hope is the
focus of our worship, study, and prayer during the
season of Advent as we prepare our hearts and
lives for the coming of Christ.
Please sign up in the youth center if you plan to
join us!
Hope to see you there!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES
Words from the Director
December Festivities
Advent is here!! What is Advent, really? Well,
Advent is a season observed in many Western
Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting
and preparation for the celebration of the birth of
Jesus. It literally means, “coming.” We are
waiting eagerly for the coming of Christ. We are
waiting eagerly for Christmas!
Join us on December 3 for our Annual PJ Party,
Missions & Movie Night from 6-8:15 pm. Come
dressed up in your Christmas jammies and
be ready to participate in some local
mission projects. After we are done, we
will put on a movie and snuggle up on the
floor (so bring your pillow and blanket) and
end our night with some popcorn and holiday
treats.
Do you love to sing? Do you want to
spread some Christmas cheer? Then
join us as we visit The Hermitage to
do some Christmas caroling on
December 10. We will stroll the halls,
singing some favorite tunes from 6:45-8:00 pm.
During the hustle and bustle of this time of year,
I encourage you and your family to reflect upon
the real reason for the season. Take some time to
help others, make homemade gifts, give the gift
of time instead of expensive gifts, tell stories of
Advent’s past, and embrace this season of
waiting. Don’t rush into this season, wishing it
would be December 25 already. In everything you
do this Advent, be joyful! And when you reach the
birthday of our Savior, you will truly be ready to
take it all in, to celebrate the gift that we each
have been given. I challenge you not to make this
season all about “The Season of Getting,” but turn
it into the season of giving, because that is the
true gift.
Glow sticks, birthday cake, and the Christmas

as well as our Focus First Mission Group, that
decorated pillow cases and placemats for our
CARITAS guests in November. The love and
creativity that they put into making these gifts for
our guests, really showed the hospitality of Christ
to them. Way to be missionaries!!
