ACP: Kyoto (Japan): Stephen Takashi Kochi Daily Prayer Diary for the Diocese of St Albans 28th September – 31st December 2014 Prayers for the week beginning Sunday 21 December Dear Friends and Colleagues, We are just coming towards the end of the third year of the Diocesan Prayer Diary running in this booklet format with information included from each Parish for prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession. There are three people involved in the whole process of creating the diary and, after three years, two of them deserve a special mention – with prayers of thanksgiving and intercession from all of us for both of them. As you will know, Sarah Mescall sends out the email requests to Parishes for the prayers people wish to be included in the coming quarter – based on the relevant spreadsheet. Responses received are put onto the spreadsheet which will already contain the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (ACP) information which I have downloaded from the Anglican Communion website. Listing Parishes by Deanery came about by people commenting (and complaining!) that they didn’t know where in the Diocese we were when we moved about each day and the Deanery list was compiled by Lynne Griffiths last year. This list is always subject to change as Pastoral Reorganisation may have taken place. The spreadsheet is then magically transformed (mail-merged, for those in the know) into a Word document – at the press of a button by Lynne Griffiths, and then it comes back to me. I have the task of editing (which I sometimes manage better than others, I know!) as well as trying to make everything fit onto the pages neatly. I love the Parishes who are brief in their requests and hope I am forgiven for ‘shortening’ the requests that are rather more fulsome in content. (My all-time favourite entry is 6th June 2012 from Husborne Crawley: Thanksgiving New Heating Boiler. Prayers Someone to pay for it!) There are always complexities of mis-spelled words, interesting names and the occasionally used ‘search and replace’ which sends all sorts of things into strange new worlds – for which apologies. After I have completed adding the LGL focus, the Verse for Reflection and last minute tidying here and there, I send the document back to Sarah who starts printing… 830 copies. In all, I would say the whole process, when adding together the time for all three of us, adds up to about 12 hours… and then there is the wizadry of the prayers being added to the website (Lynne) and the twitter feed (me @StAlbansPrayers). It is always good to see what people give thanks for – and to share in their rejoicing. It is always privilege to be invited to join our prayers for areas of Parish life which are challenging and difficult, as well as those which are filled with possibility and hope. So you will see that it is a complicated process, but an interesting one too – and I invite you to join with me in offering prayers of thanksgiving for Sarah and Lynne, as well as prayers of intercession for them too – for all the work they do on our behalf.
