FACT SHEET PRE-APPRENTICESHIPS IN SCHOOLS 2015 What are Pre-Apprenticeships in Schools? Pre-Apprenticeships in schools are Certificate II programs that have been nominated by Western Australian industry training councils as valid pathways from school to a traditional trade apprenticeship. Students in Year 11 and 12 attend school, train at a registered training organisation and are linked to an employer for work placement. Students must complete required hours of work placement as nominated in the Western Australian Pre-apprenticeship Program Business Rules 2015. Benefits of Pre-Apprenticeships in Schools Successful applicants for a Certificate II pre-apprenticeship will: undertake training while still completing their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE); have an industry endorsed pathway to a full-time apprenticeship; receive credit for successful completion of units of competency; and receive VET credit transfer towards the WACE; Conditions to be met Places for pre-apprenticeships in schools are limited. When applying, students will be required to: be commencing Year 11 or 12; have a ‘C’ grade average at the end of Year 10; have support from their school including endorsement of work readiness; meet specific industry licensing requirements; and meet Australian citizenship or visa requirements. Student application process for Pre-Apprenticeships in Schools Registered training organisations are responsible for managing the pre-apprenticeships in schools application process; including marketing, recruitment and student selection processes for their respective programs. Work placement Registered training organisations will: coordinate work placements in partnership with the schools; organise work placements within a timeframe agreed by all stakeholders; and provide schools with evidence that the work placement has been established and monitored. Fees and charges Secondary school students undertaking pre-apprenticeships in schools as part of their secondary education are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees. However, some industries may require the students to purchase uniforms, protective equipment, text books or trade equipment/tools.
