THE BLESSING OF THE BABIES JESUS
Loving God, whose beloved Son was born long ago on a night like this:
Bless these figures of clay and paint and wood that have been made in
the image of that little baby boy. Let them remind us that the best
Christmas gift of all time was giving us Jesus, who loved us the way
You love us and showed us how to love each other. We ask this in his
name, who with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns for ever and
ever. Amen.
THE BLESSING OF THE CRÈCHE
God of Mary and Joseph, of shepherds and animals, bless us as we
look at this manger scene. Bless these figures who tell the story of how
humans, angels, and animals found Jesus, the Christ, in this poor
place. Fill us with joy, gentleness, and thanksgiving, and guide our
steps in the way of peace. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER CONTINUES (please remain standing)
Children’s Service
Celebrant: We give you thanks and praise, loving God, because in
sending Jesus, your child, to us, you sent us a new sign of
love and peace for the world. He cares for the poor. He
feeds the hungry. He heals the sick. He lives among the
poorest and least of us, teaching us of our poverty and of
your wealth.
At supper with his friends on the night before he died,
Jesus took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it
to them, saying, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is
my body which is given for you.”
After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing,
and gave it to his friends, saying, “Drink this, all of you:
this is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the
forgiveness of sin. Whenever you gather, do this in
memory of me.”
God of life, with this bread and wine, we celebrate the
birth and life of Jesus, and we offer ourselves to you in
him.
Send your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts, and make
them holy, so that we, your people, being fed by holy
things, may take light and hope, love and peace, into the
world; through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, now and
forever. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
(said together, standing)
Prayer Book p364
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily
bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save
us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom,
the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL
“Away in a manger”
Hymnal 101
Cradle Song
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
At this time you may be
seated until an usher
invites you forward for
Communion. They may
ask you to go down the
side aisles to the back of
the Church and then come
forward up the center
aisle.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.
At St. Philip’s, all are
welcome to receive the
sacrament of Holy
Communion. You may
extend your hands to
receive the bread and then
drink from the chalice.
Alternatively, you may
receive the consecrated
bread and then dip it into
the chalice to partake of
both elements.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
close by me for ever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
and fit us for heaven to live with thee there.
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL
“What child is this”
Hymnal 115
Greensleeves
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are
keeping?
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
If you do not wish to
receive Communion you
are invited to come to the
altar rail for a blessing.
You may indicate this by
crossing your arms across
your chest.
Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here the silent Word is pleading.
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, come, peasant, king, to own
him;
the King of kings salvation brings, let loving hearts enthrone him.
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.
Second Verse: Sung by the Cherub Choir
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light
radiant beams from thy holy face,
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth! Jesus, Lord at thy birth!
POST-COMMUNION PRAYER (please stand)
Loving God, we give you thanks for feeding us with the Sacrament of
Christ’s Body and Blood which brings us close with you and with your
son, Jesus. Now send us out into the world, forgiven, and restored;
that we may tell the world of your great love for all your children, and
walk in the ways taught us by your Son, Jesus Christ, who with you
and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
THE CHRISTMAS BLESSING (please remain standing)
Go now to your homes, receive and celebrate God’s love that brings
the world together through the Child of the manger and the Christ

May the Holy Spirit’s laughter lift every heart.
May God’s loving arms embrace us all in grace and peace. Amen.

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies;
with th’angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem!
Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!
Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord;
late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th’incarnate Deity.
Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!
Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.

Angelus ad virginem
Irish carol
The St. Nicholas Choir
Gabriel to Mary came, and entered at her dwelling, with his salutation glad
her maiden fears dispelling, “All hail, thou queen of virgins bright! God,
Lord of earth and heaven’s height, Thy very Son, shall soon be born in
pureness, the Saviour of mankind. Thou art the gate of heaven bright, the
sinners’ healer kind.” “How could I another be that am to man a stranger?
How should I my strong resolve, my solemn vows endanger?” “Power from
the Holy Ghost on high shall bring to pass this mystery. Then have no fear:
be of good cheer, believing that still thy chastity in God’s almighty keeping
shall all unsullied be.” Then to him the maid replied, with noble mein
supernal, “Lo! the humble handmaid I of God the Lord eternal! With thee,
bright messenger of heaven, by whom this wondrous news is given, I well
agree and long to see fulfilled Thy gracious prophecy. As God my Lord doth
will it, so be it unto me!” Hail! thou Mother of the Lord, who bringest of
gifts the rarest, peace to angels and to men, when Christ the Lord thou
barest! Do thou, we pray, entreat thy Son for us our longed redemption
Himself to win, and from our sin release us; His succour for to give, that,
when we hence are taken, we too in heaven may live. (14th-century Irish

The St. Nicholas Choir
The hungry he has filled with good things, and the rich he has sent away
empty. (Text: Luke 1: 53; music: Antonio Vivaldi, Italian, 1675–1741.)
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (please stand)
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Based on a Eucharistic Prayer
from Seasons of the Spirit
(www.spiritseasons.com)
- 13 -
5:30 p.m.
Celebrant: Thank you, dear God. This is the night that Jesus was born
and came to live among us. You show us that you love us
so much that you would become human like us so that we
might learn to be holy like you.
All-Generations Eucharist
Rite II
Jesus brings light to the world and hope in the darkness.
In joyful celebration we sing:
SANCTUS (please sing together)
Hymnal S-128
Ho - - - ly, ho - - - ly, ho - ly Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER CONTINUES (please remain standing)
Celebrant: We give you thanks and praise, loving God, because in
sending Jesus, your child, to us, you sent us a new
sign of love and peace for the world. He cares for the
poor. He feeds the hungry. He heals the sick. He
lives among the poorest and least of us, teaching us of
our poverty and of your wealth.
At supper with his friends on the night before he died,
Jesus took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it
to them, saying, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is
my body which is given for you.”
After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, said the
blessing, and gave it to his friends, saying, “Drink this, all
of you: this is my blood, poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you gather, do this in
memory of me.”
God of life, with this bread and wine, we celebrate the birth
and life of Jesus, and we offer ourselves to you in him.
Send your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts, and
make them holy, so that we, your people, being fed by
holy things, may take light and hope, love and peace,
into the world; through Christ, with Christ, and in
Christ, now and forever. Amen.

HYMN IN PROCESSION
Hymnal 109
The First Nowell
“The first Nowell”
All-Generations Eucharist
Rite II
The first Nowell the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
They look-ed up and saw a star
shining in the east beyond them far,
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
And by the light of that same star
three wise men came from country far;
to seek for a king was their intent,
and to follow the star wherever it went.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
DISMISSAL

Music Groups for Children and Youth
Children and youth are at the heart of St. Philip’s music ministry. The St. Nicholas
Children’s Choir and the Schola Cantorum rehearse weekly, and participate in regular
Sunday liturgies. Participants gain valuable musical and spiritual formation through
singing and fellowship. They are exposed to some of the great music of the past and
present, and participate in the training scheme of the Royal School of Church Music.
Through the generosity of Friends of Music,
choristers attend annual choir camps with
other singers from around the country. In the
summer of 2016, the St. Nicholas Choir is
invited to be choir-in-residence at Worcester
Cathedral, in England. This experience will be
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing, at a
great Cathedral, the music that is a part of our
Episcopal heritage.
After School Music and
Homework Program
The St. Philip’s After School Music and
Homework Program operates every
Monday through Thursday afternoon
during the school term for children
mostly in grades 3–5. Music lessons,
choir, supervised homework help and
mentoring are provided by our staff and volunteers. Our program is free to those
children and families from two neighboring schools that are in economically
disadvantaged environments. We have 50 volunteers to help with this program.

“Comfy Space” Worship
To join the “comfy team”
contact:
Sandralyn Pierce
299-6421, ext. 43
Sandralyn.Pierce@
stphilipstucson.org
On the second Sunday of each month, children and
families participate in a very special worship service at
9:15 in the Children’s Chapel. “Comfy Space” is a
delightful worship experience for those who wiggle in
church and those who worship with them. Sermon
activities, prayer, Gospel readings, and songs are
designed to hold the interest of children while allowing
family and friends to experience the presence of God in
a relaxed setting.
Music Groups for Adults
St. Philip’s adult choirs welcome all who
can sing and fulfill attendance
requirements. There are two adult choirs,
the St. Philip’s Singers and an auditioned
chamber choir, the Canterbury Choir. They
lead worship on Sunday mornings
September through May and on special
feast days. The mission of St. Philip’s
Friends of Music is to enrich the musical
experience of the parish and community through events such as concerts, outreach,
education, scholarships, commissions, and support of special musical events.

Adult Formation Opportunities
Adult Formation forums meet not only
on Sunday mornings but also on
weekdays, evenings during the week, and
weekends. Topics range from spirituality
and information about the Episcopal
church, to current issues of concern, to
exercise and health and wellness courses,
to intellectual challenges such as science
and theology. All our formation programs
are designed to inspire personal and
community growth in three areas: mission, spiritual, and theological formation. Our
programs strive to strengthen your call to ministry in the church and mission in the world.
Still More Opportunities for Adults
There are myriad other ways adults can become
involved in the life of St. Philip’s Parish, through
such avenues as music, service opportunities,
outreach, pastoral care, and social activities. We
invite you to explore all that is happening at St.
Philip’s and discover where God is next calling
you. Visit the Newcomer Information Station in
the Perry Garden on any Sunday morning or
