It was just the right size and color, a good fit, a decent price. It spoke to you the minute you saw it,
whispering promises of confidence and prestige.
Surely, it would make someone happy - that someone, of course, being you.
You already own lots of things – so why buy more?
In “Spent: Exposing Our Complicated Relationship
with Shopping,” edited by Kerry Cohen, you’ll read
essays about shopping and the possible reasons behind it.
Popular culture says that women + malls = bliss.
We shop ‘til we drop. We drop a wad on shoes,
clothes, and things we already have too many of,
happily maxing out credit cards only to sweat the day
when the bills are due and the checkbook’s lean.
Or so everyone’s led to believe. The truth is, though,
that women generally have individual, personal,
mixed relationships with buying.
Shopping, it’s true, can be part of a dream. The woman in an ad for a sweater, for instance, looks mighty
happy; ownership of that sweater seems like a portal
to living that life. Shopping for it can be a matter of
hope for the future - or for health, the chance to wear
the item purchased, and a dream of buying time.
Conversely, shopping might make one believe that
money is meaningless, that it only matters what you
do with it. Buying things can be a great equalizer. It
can be a sign that you deserve the finer things – or,
at least, something a little better than what life and
circumstances handed you.
Some women shop for their children and ignore their
own needs when tracking down deals, while others put themselves first. Shopping can be a bonding
experience between mother, daughter, grandmother
– or son. Some may see it as a coping mechanism or
as relaxation. Items bought could complete a collection, a closet, or a soul, while some purchases can
definitely be viewed as acts of defiance.
Shopping can be fun, but it has a flipside. It can be
irritating, exasperating, sad, desperate, and avoided
whenever possible. It doesn’t always include a physi-
cal purchase. And it doesn’t always mean bringing
home the goods by paying for them…
Let’s start here: I don’t think you’re going to learn
anything from “Spent.”
The stories presented by editor Kerry Cohen might
surprise you. They might shock you a little, anger
you some, and one or two might ping your Awwwww
Meter, but I don’t think you’ll learn anything.
I don’t think that matters, though. The thirty-one
women who contributed to this book each likewise
offer different viewpoints on their feelings toward
money and what it buys. Their stories come from
various walks of life, economic realities, and longheld attitudes, which is entertaining enough without
having to be instructional. Sometimes, a book is just
a book.
And this book is worth reading – especially if you,
too, have a relationship with money and want insight
to that of others. In that case, then, “Spent” is worth
every penny.

PLAINTIFF ALLEGES:
1. This is a civil action for forfeiture of property and monies pursuant to Health and Safety Code ‘’11470 et seq., brought on behalf of
The People of the State of California.
2. The subject matter of this action is THIRTY THREE THOUSAND TWENTY DOLLARS ($33,020.00) U.S. CURRENCY, hereinafter referred to as “Defendant Property.”
3. The court has jurisdiction over this action
by virtue of
Health and Safety Code ‘’11470 and
11488.4(a). Defendant Property was seized
on or about 04/24/2014 by agents of the Santa
Cruz County Anti-Crime Team (“SCCACT”)
and this action has been commenced within
one year of the date of seizure of Defendant
Property.
4. On 04/24/2014, the FedEx Security Supervisor working at the FedEx located at 2660
Research Park in Soquel, CA intercepted a
package containing $33,020.00 U.S. Currency. It is against FedEx policy to ship currency
with them. The attached air bill showed the
package was sent by STEVEN MANZELLE
(AMANZELLE@) at 175 Florence St in
Chestnut Hill, MA to WILLIAM RUSSELL
(ARUSSELL@) at 603 Bayview Dr. in Aptos, CA. The Security Supervisor turned the
package over to SCCACT Agents.
5. SCCACT Agents observed that the currency was bundled with rubber bands, wrapped
in aluminum foil, and placed in a clear,
plastic, vacuum-sealed bag, which was also
wrapped in aluminum foil. The currency was
then placed in a plastic grocery bag and packaged with other plastic grocery bags in order
to avoid detection.
6. On 04/24/2014, SCCACT Agents also attempted to contact both MANZELLE and
RUSSELL using the information from the
air bill located on the intercepted package.
Agents called the number associated with
MANZELLE but a male voice on the other
indicated they had dialed the wrong number.
Agents were unable to make contact with
RUSSELL.
7. On 04/24/2014, SCCACT Agents contacted
the Boston Police Department (ABPD@) for
assistance with follow-up on the location of
MANZELLE. On 05/02/2014, BPD Officers
told SCCACT Agents that no one named STEVEN MANZELLE was living at the address
listed on the air bill as belonging to MANZELLE and that a search of BPD databases
did not locate anyone by the name STEVEN
MANZELLE.
8. On 05/02/2014, a money sniff was conducted of the currency using CHP K9 Rocky.
Rocky alerted to the odor of narcotics on the
currency.
9. On 05/07/2014, SCCACT Agents conducted a probation search of RUSSELL=s
residence and interviewed him. SCCACT
Agents questioned RUSSELL concerning the
parcel containing $33,020.00 U.S. Currency.
RUSSELL denied any knowledge of the parcel and signed a disclaimer waiving any interest in the currency.
10. Defendant Property was located as follows: $33,020.00 U.S. Currency was located
in a box shipped with FedEx at 2660 Research
Park Dr in Aptos, CA.
11. Plaintiff is informed and believes, and
thereupon alleges, that Defendant Property
(a) was connected or related to certain
criminal activity, in that Defendant Property
was used to facilitate the sale or possession
for sale of a controlled substance; (b) was
furnished, or was intended to be furnished
in exchange for a controlled substance; (c)
represented proceeds traceable to such an exchange; and (d) was money used or intended
to be used to facilitate drug trafficking or
sales.
12. Therefore, Plaintiff contends that all of
Defendant Property, as set forth in Paragraph
10 above, is subject to forfeiture pursuant to
Health and Safety Code ‘’11470(f).
WHEREFORE, Plaintiff prays:
1. For judgment and an order declaring all of
Defendant Property is forfeited to the
People of the State of California, and is to be
disposed of pursuant to Health and Safety
Code ‘11489;
2. For costs of suit and attorneys’ fees herein;
and
3. For such other and further relief as the
Court deems proper.
