MONTHLY
CHALLENGE
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Read the daily Gospel
each morning.
May St. Joseph, “the just man,” a tireless worker, the upright guardian
of those entrusted to his care, guard, protect and enlighten families
forever.
Past Monthly Challenges
May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, thus also be the
Mother of the “Church of the Home.” May Mary, the Handmaiden of the
Lord, be an example of humble and generous acceptance of the will of
God; may she, the sorrowful Mother at the foot of the Cross, comfort the
sufferings and dry the tears of those who are in distress because of
difficulties in their families.
May the Child Jesus teach children in every family obedience,
respect and sharing.
I entrust each family to The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Open your hearts to the light that the Gospel sheds on every family. The
family that PRAYS together STAYS together.
January 1, 2015 – The 48th World Day of Peace. Pope Francis chose the
theme: “Slaves No More, but Brothers and Sisters”. Many people
think that slavery is a thing of the past. In fact, this social plague
remains all too real in today’s world. Being children of God gives all
human beings equal dignity as brothers and sisters. Slavery deals a
murderous blow to this fundamental fraternity, and so to peace as well.
That Child, Who is the Word of God made flesh, came to give humanity a
peace which the world cannot give. (The World Day of Peace was
initiated by Pope Paul VI.)
Who are the Peacemakers? They are all those who, day by day, try to
overcome evil with good, with the power of truth, with the weapons of
prayer and forgiveness, with honest and well done work, with the
Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. The peacemakers are many, but
they are not loud. As leaven in dough, they raise humanity according to
God’s plan.
January 1st is also the feast of The Solemnity of Mary, The Holy
Mother of God. We ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to bless and care for us.
The New Year is like going on a trip or voyage. With the light and grace
of God, may it be a path to peace for every person and every family, for
each country and for the whole world.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace – Pray for Us!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Christian Service
As Catholics, we are called to put
the Two Feet of Christian Service -- Charity and Justice --- into action!
We step with the foot of charity
when we work to assist others with
their immediate, short-term needs.
We step with the foot of justice
when we work to address the root
causes of problems facing our
communities.
Giving Tree Thank You!
Last week 20 agencies, representing
many people
and needs from the community, picked
up more than 1700 Christmas gifts from
our parish community’s
Giving Tree program!
This could not have happened without the hard work
of Mary Jo Szlaga and the Women’s Club who
sponsored and organized this program.
Thank you Mary Jo and Women’s Club members! Your
hard work and our parish members’ generosity have
helped make many families’ Christmas brighter.

Divine Mercy Prayer Line
As Jesus revealed to St. Faustina, “I have
opened My Heart as a living fountain of
mercy. Let all souls draw life from it.” If you
or others would like to receive prayer for your
intentions, contact Eileen at the Divine Mercy
Prayer line: (586) 725-0944.
No, we’re not talking about angels or aliens.
We’re talking about individuals who care
about others. The Scriptures describe their service well:
“Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow
prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you
yourselves were suffering” (Hebrews 13:3).
If you or someone you know wants to do more as a Christian caregiver, consider Stephen Ministry. This is
St. Lawrence’s one-to-one caregiving ministry. A training
class is starting soon. Please contact Bo Beauregard at
(586) 254-7418 for more information.

Hand Washing Reminders
Cold and flu season is a good time of year to review and
remind ourselves of the best way to wash our hands:
•
Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or
cold) and apply soap.
•
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the
soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
•
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to
end twice.
•
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
•
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
•
If soap and water isn’t available, use an alcohol-based
sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Living the Good News
December 28, 2014
A baby was born in a stable,
very dark and very cold.
He came to help God’s people;
to fulfill the prophecies of old.
His mother was young and faithful,
His father was trusting and brave.
Their Son is the one we have been waiting for;
it is mankind He will save.
The shepherds were very afraid
when the angels announced He was here.
They were invited to come see Him
for from Him there was nothing to fear.
His birth is a joyful occasion!
Kings came from far away!
This special day of Jesus’ birth
we still celebrate today.
Not just the event of long ago,
but Christ’s presence here and now.
We see his face in every stranger;
and they must see Him in us somehow.
I wish you a Merry Christmas.
Not just for a day or a season.
May Christ’s light shine upon you –
My wish to you is for this reason.
God bless,

Let us begin this New Year with a prayer of expectation
not for worldly joys and gifts; but for the joys and gifts of

Holy Spirit within our lives and accept Him into our lives.
It is only through total surrender to the Holy Spirit that we

A Word … from the D.R.E.
Family traditions often begin with religious celebrations,
such as Christmas.
The Holy Family kept religious
traditions, too. In Luke’s Gospel we learn that Mary and
Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple to “present him to
the Lord” as the custom of Mosaic Law required. When
Jesus and his family entered the Temple, Simeon and
Anna both recognized the significance of their presence.
Not only did Mary and Joseph observe a customary ritual,
their actions were a blessing to others, too. When we
celebrate religious feasts and keep family traditions, we
bless our extended Church family, too, for we are the
Body of Christ!
May your family continue to experience the joy of
Christmas throughout the New Year!
Question of the Week:
What is your favorite religious celebration in your family?

EMHC Update
Climb on board with Jesus, our Savior, and become a
fisher of men and women by proclaiming the Good News
of Christ as a weekday or weekend lector at St. Lawrence.
Anyone who is confirmed and feels that the Holy Spirit
maybe tapping him/her on the shoulder is joyfully invited
to attend Lector Training on Wednesday, January 21, 2015
at 7:00 pm in the Church.
You will receive a new lector workbook and become adept
at using the church sound system. Please contact Eileen
Martini at 586-215-0422 or Kathy Padley at 586-854-7535
if you have any questions.
You need not pre-register. Come and join in our mission
to spread the Word. See you in Church!
You Can Play an Important Role in Our
Stephen Ministry . . .
. . . Because you may know of a friend,
neighbor, co-worker, or relative who is going
through a difficult time and who could benefit
from the focused care, encouragement, and
support of a Stephen Minister. If you know of someone
who is hurting, talk with one of the Stephen Leaders from
St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 586-731-5347. They can
talk with you about how we can connect the person you
know with one of our Stephen Ministers. It’s a great way
for you to show how much you care!
A slight change has been made in procedure for weekend masses. We would
like to welcome back to the ministry
those EMHC’s who have been uncomfortable pouring at the altar, and those
who are unable to consume a large
amount of remaining Precious Blood.
The wine used for consecration at weekend masses will be
pre-poured by the sacristans. The EMHC in position for
Cup 1 and Cup 2 do not have to pour the wine at the
altar.
Instructions for Cup 1 and Cup 2
While the priest is waiting to receive the offertory
gifts, carry the tray with cups to the altar and
place it on the corporal on the right and left side
of the altar. Return to your seat.
At the Sign of Peace, go up to the altar, take the tray
and place it back on the credence table. Then
line up in front of the mosaic to receive Eucharist
on the altar. Once you receive, distribute the
Precious Blood to the other EMHC’s in the usual
manner.
After distribution, any Precious Blood remaining in the cup
should be consumed by the EMHC, or ask an usher or the
priest to help.

Parish Staff
St. Lawrence Athletics has decided to explore new
avenues within our football program, including a change
in leadership with the Football Coordinator. More detail
will be forthcoming after the holidays regarding a
replacement.
In the meantime, the St. Lawrence
Athletic Program would like to thank Pat Anderson for
his many years of service as a Coach, Coordinator and

of himself in his assorted roles, and has been very instrumental to the success of our Athletic and Football
Program. His dedication towards the children of the

God bless you, Pat, as everyone involved in Athletics,
thanks you and wishes you continued happiness!

"Do whatever He tells you" (John 2:5)
On the day that Mary gave Juan Diego the image on the
tilma, the Aztecs were waiting in expectation for a sign
from the heavens for a new sun god. At the same time,
the Spaniards were waiting in Advent preparation for the
celebration of Christmas.
The image on the tilma
communicated to the Aztecs so profoundly and
completely, in their own native language, the divine
nature of the child in Mary's womb. They understood Mary
to be the Mother of Life.
And they realized the
extraordinary love and mercy from a God who did not
require bloody heart sacrifices to obtain blessings. Instead they found a God who sacrificed his own son
for them, having His own heart pierced so that the blood
and water that gushed forth would cover them in love and
mercy. The Spaniards recognized the Christian symbolism
also in the image. Looking at the face of the mixed race
girl, the "mestiza", it became clear that God wished to
unite the old world ( the pagan Aztecs) with the new
world (the Spanish Christians). The great Aztec nation
was miraculously converted and Christianity spread
quickly throughout the Americas.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is relevant today because we live
in a time when the culture of death is all around us. St.
Pope John Paul II said: "With time the threats against life
have not grown weaker. They are taking on vast proportions...". Today we kill over four thousand unborn children
every day. Laws promoting euthanasia for the old, the
young, and the disabled have become realized. We desperately need a Guadalupe event today.
Wherever Mary goes, she brings Jesus. At the wedding
feast of Cana, Mary intervenes - directing the servants
toward Jesus, saying "Do whatever he tells you." She is
our Mediatrix, the path to Christ.
Today, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the only true
picture of the Mother of God, and the only one that emphasizes her motherly role for the unborn, is helping to
end the sacrifice of the unborn child as it is brought to
abortion facilities throughout the world.
Modern science cannot explain how the image was created
or why it has survived almost five hundred years. And
modern technology has discovered things in the tilma that
could not have been known five hundred years ago - bringing the miracle of the tilma into the 21st century, transcending time with its message to impact us today.
St. Pope John Paul II entrusted the future of the Americas
to Our Lady of Guadalupe, calling her " The Patroness of
all America".
"Our Lady of Guadalupe, Protectress of the Unborn,
Pray for us".

Between commercials and daily secular holiday movies,
finding TV programming focused on the true meaning of
Christmas can be difficult. But thanks to your gifts to the
Catholic Services Appeal, the Catholic Television Network
of Detroit (CTND) helps families throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit truly prepare for the birth of our savior,
Jesus Christ.
Since 1987, CTND has broadcast faith-filled programming
that informs, educates, inspires, and entertains to homes
throughout southeast Michigan. CTND also uses local experts on Church teaching to produce award-winning documentaries, coverage of Masses, and youth and family specials. Since 2011, CTN has been an affiliate of Bostonbased CatholicTV Network.
CTND’s program schedule can be found on the Archdiocese of Detroit website and in The Michigan Catholic
newspaper. For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.
