The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph 
December 28, 2014
“My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have
prepared in the sight of all the peoples.”
~ Luke 2:30-31
 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis 

The Christmas cards always look so
peaceful and serene.
Joseph hovers
protectingly over Mary who gazes upon
her newborn infant son Jesus who is either
asleep in the manger or His mother’s
arms. Shepherds gaze with wonder at the
domestic scene, magi from the East are in
the distance coming to worship at the
cradle of the newborn king who is being watched by
guardian angels. We sing of the calm, holy night when
Christ was born and the saga of our salvation was begun.
That’s what Christmas cards show. Though I’m sure
there is truth to the image we can’t possibly think that
everything was so nice and neat. Mary had to give birth
in a stable with assorted animals because there was no
place else to go. The shepherds were incredulous at first
and trooped in to witness what the odd curiosity of
singing angels told them (“Singing angels? Who’s going
to believe this?”). The magi actually arrived sometime
later but did so under the threats of King Herod (Boo!
Hiss!) who was determined to find that troublesome baby
and have him done away with. Warned in a dream that
the infant’s life was in danger, Joseph quickly packed up
his little family, saddled the donkey and went off to far
away Egypt where Herod (Boo! Hiss!) couldn’t touch
them. Only after the passage of some time were Joseph,
Mary and Jesus able to return to their homeland, journey
to their hometown of Nazareth and take up a normal life.
Even then, life was hard. Nazareth was not a Fortune 500
city! It was small, out of the way and dirt poor. Joseph
earned a living by working with his hands, an occupation
most likely picked up by the young Jesus and, scholars
tell us today, most likely walked a couple of hours to and
from their work place in the nearby economic hub town of
Sephoris. By no standards did the Holy Family have an
easy life. From the very beginning they met one
challenge after another and overcame them by God’s help.
It is comforting for us to look on the Christmas
card scenes of the Holy Family and become lost in
sentimental nostalgia. We all need to do this because it
adds a cushion to soften the hardness of some of our lives.
Families today struggle as much or more than ever and the
challenges presented to solid family life are too many to
count. However, when the family is firmly grounded in
the love of God then any challenge can be overcome.
Even in families that seem to be nearly perfect heartache
and disappointment can creep in but, again, with a firm
faith in God and the image of the Holy Family before, us
we can all take comfort that the love that bound them
together binds us together as well.
The Feast of the Holy Family is more important
today than ever. If we are beset by problems that shake
our family unity let us look to the Holy Family to lift us
up and give us comfort and encouragement. Sometimes
we might feel like we’ve been forced into exile but we
always know that sooner or later we’ll be allowed to
return home. We just can’t let the Herods of our lives
(BOO! HISS!) win.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who had a
hand in making our Christmas Masses and
celebrations the grand occasions they were!
We especially thank our choirs who practiced many hours
to provide the beautiful music to uplift us and aid our
prayer at our Christmas Masses. If you missed the
Christmas Concert our combined choirs presented on
December 14th you missed a special treat! It was
fantastic! Once again, thank you to one and all for
everything!!!
BLESSING FOR NEW YEAR’S CALENDARS:
Lord, you who live outside of time and reside in the
imperishable moment, we ask your blessing this New Year
upon your gift to us of time. Bless our calendars, these
ordered lists of days, weeks and months – of holydays,
holidays, fasts and feasts. May they remind us that all
days are for celebration and contemplation, for giving
and receiving love. Lord, bless this new year – each of its
365 days and nights. Bless us with peace and joy. Grant
to us, good and gracious God, the New Year’s gift of a
year of love. We ask this through your love incarnate,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 1ST, NEW
YEAR’S DAY is the Feast of Mary, Mother
of God. Though it is a Holy Day the
obligation to attend Mass that day is
dispensed. The only Mass on New Year’s Day will be at
8:00 a.m.
The title of “Mary, Mother of God” comes from
the Council of Ephesus in 450 A.D. The priest Nestorius
was teaching that Jesus was not truly human, only divine
in a human mask. The Council of Ephesus was called to
dispute this false doctrine and taught that Jesus is truly
human and truly divine: Divine as the incarnation of God,
human as the offspring of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In
Greek the Blessed Mother’s title is Theotokos – God
Bearer – which we translate into modern languages as
Mother of God. That is why we honor Mary as “Mother
of God” in the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass by which we
affirm that Jesus Christ is truly human and truly divine.

TREASURES
FROM
OUR
TRADITION: In the last century, a
few new feasts were blended into the
Church year, including today’s. After
World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its
impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer
Christians an image of hope and holiness in married
family life, and also to promote the welfare of children,
today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it became a
feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only
of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We
ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough
to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of
family life. The message of Christmas shines through:
God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of
our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise
their children in difficult circumstances, and of people
who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some
of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in
our hearts today in prayer.

We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers in the
bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list up-to-date.
Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off the list and,
as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We will list names for
prayer requests for one month.
After the last Sunday of the month the names on the list will be taken
off and a new prayer request list will be published the first Sunday of
the month. If someone wishes to have a name remembered again, the
name must be re-submitted to the office. This will assure that we keep
an up-to-date and more readable list.

that mailing. December is also a good time to check on
the total of your contributions for 2014 prior to the
December 31 tax year deadline. You may do so by
calling the parish office, (858)487-4314 between 8:30
a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may

THE GIFT OF GENEROSITY: This
holiday season, we thank everyone who has
supported San Rafael this past year with
their time, talent and financial contributions
and look forward to support from all of our members in
the year ahead. If you need a convenient way to make
regular offerings or if you plan to make an additional gift
before the end of the year, we encourage you to look into
our electronic giving options. As the pace of life speeds
up, especially around the holidays, you may find
electronic giving a most welcome way to make
contributions. Visit www.sanrafaelparish.org and click
on the “Online Giving” button or contact the parish office
for more information.
YEAR-END CHARITABLE GIFTS: A gift of your
securities, including stocks or bonds, is an easy way to
make a gift. By making a gift of your appreciated
securities, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that
would otherwise be due if you sold these assets.
Contributions made by December 31 may be deducted on
this year’s taxes. For more information on giving a gift
through securities, please visit our diocesan website at
www.diocese-sdiego.org and click on “Giving – Stock
Donations” at the top of the website. Or, you may contact
the Office for Stewardship and Development, Damian
Esparza, at (858)490-8294.
REMEMBER YOUR PARISH IN
YOUR WILL. The work our parish
accomplishes continues through the
thoughtfulness of our parishioners who
remember us in bequests and wills. Please consider
remembering the parish in your bequest and will. The
bequest should be listed as a beneficiary, “Pastor of San
Rafael Parish of San Diego, a Corporation Sole.
Federal ID #27-3859305.” Long after a faithful Christian
has departed this life, that person’s name and generosity
can be continued through the religious education program,
outreach to the poor, building fund, youth ministry or any
other number of worthy parish causes by remembering
San Rafael Parish in the individual’s will or trust. This
would truly be a lasting legacy for anyone!
