I am humbled and excited that you have chosen to give me the
opportunity to lead the club into the next year.
I promise to be...
Available and listen to your comments and suggestions.
Fearless when trying to carry out your wishes.
Open to implementing new ideas to improve our club.
Relentless in looking at the way we operate to find hidden inefficiencies.
Frugal with your dues so that we can make them go further.
Beginning in December you will be noticing some small changes. Your newly elected bridge has
already met numerous times so that on December 1st we will hit the ground running. You will
see cruise events planned like never before. We will have events that will make Liberace
jealous. We will have a financial committee that will be analyzing every penny that is spent
protecting your interests.
You will see our “Clean Marina” get cleaner. You can tell that we are excited to get going and
make this club everything that it can be. You will see the enthusiasm in the articles as you read
them. I can tell you with absolute certainty that this bridge and board are committed to making
this the best year ever.
Buckle up and hang on. We will start the celebration with New Year’s eve. Jenny Malcomb and
Derry have been planning New Years Eve for 4 months now. Michelle Junet is stepping up big
time with the decorations and making sure that it will be, just perfect. I cannot think of better
leaders for this team. Wow what a show it will be and the club will be gorgeous. Our goal is to
keep you energized and entertained until midnight. I must warn you, though, that because of the
size of the band and the space required for our entertainers there will be a limited number of
seats. For this limitation we are very sorry. Make your reservations early so that you will not
miss it. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
Ladies restroom remodel update. This project is still on track to start construction in the first part
of the year. Expect a Club meeting in mid December to go over the final plans and costs. The
whole design and Décor committee has worked 6 months to get to this point. Special thanks to
Donna Love, your C-Gulls captain, for all of the extra help and support she is giving this venture
and to Merikay McQuoid and Lynda Pippenger for getting the designer hired and keeping the
design on track. When you see them please take a minute to say thanks. We expect to see the
permit issued mid-month and start seeing contractors’ bids come in the early weeks of the month.
Then it will be time to have a meeting and discuss what our vision is going to cost.
Land next door. If you have not already heard, the plan for Boat Storage was approved by the
port last month. Your board of directors, in conjunction with the Home owners and the Grand
Caribe task force took quick and decisive action. As a result, just 10 days after the port gave the
approval for the project the project was withdrawn by the owner. We still have an enormous
amount of work to do to confirm our rights to the area that we are using for weddings and for the
Bocce Ball courts, and we have a significant challenge to maintain the waterfront access for our
community. But this certainly was a step in the right direction, and it confirmed that we are on
the right track and that we are raising the correct issues to the correct people.
Last but certainly not least PLEASE HELP US TO MAKE THIS BETTER FOR YOU. Dianna
Durgin, Greg Dillon, and myself are all very committed to making this happen. But it does not
happen without you.
Dianna will need help with all of the club events, dining and facilities committees. Greg is going
to need your to help with membership. We need your ideas and your help. Only you can make
this club better.
Remember if everyone does a little no one has to do a lot.

It takes a lot of volunteers to run
our club and I want to thank the
ones that helped last year and have
already stepped up to help this
coming year. So far the volunteers are:
I am looking forward to being your new Rear
Commodore for 2015 and will do my best to keep
the membership growing in our great club. A few
members have already volunteered to be on the
membership committee; however, I still need a few
more. If you are interested, please contact me at
[email protected] or 619-277-9500. We will meet
once per month and I will do my best to keep the
meetings at one hour or less. Not only will we be
brainstorming ideas to attract new members but also
retaining the wonderful members we already have.
Special Events and Entertainment: Kathy Harris with
special event parties, and Mike Durgin with scheduling the
bands. This team needs other members to help with
decorating, coming up with new party themes, etc.
We had two new equity memberships approved at the November Board
meeting. They are Jeffrey and Denise Laveson and William and Nancy Orta.
We have new member flags that will be placed on tables. When you see these
flags, please stop by and introduce yourselves.
Food, Beverage & Kitchen Team: Becki Lock, Michelle
Junet, Jane DeYoung, Connie Bienfait, Karen Miller and
Frank Yougnman. I hope others will join this team. This
team will work with the Manager and Chef to review the
menu, suggest changes and pricing and keep the menu
exciting. This team, or a few members of this team, will also
review the bar items and pricing at the bar.
Sadly, we had three equity resignations. Patricia Hill, Neil and Josefina
Capin and Garry and Sharon Shuster.
I want to take this time to wish
everyone a Happy Holiday and
thank everyone for putting your
trust in me to help guide our club in
the upcoming year.
Maintenance and House Team: Ed Morris has agreed to
head up this team again this year. He has done an excellent
job and we have him to thank for our club looking so good.
We have ongoing events and members who spend their time
making these events lots of fun.
Monday night Trivia with the Commodore: your Bridge
team; Monday night gaming: Ken Mischel; Wednesday
Bingo, Dolores Reed and Don Pope; Wednesday: Wii
Bowling, Pat Kinney, with help from the Bridge; Bocce Ball:
Frank Youngman and Mel Blair; Nautical Book Club: Sue
Steven.
Any member who would like to help on any committee, or
has thoughts for new things to do, please let me know. After
all, this is your club, and it is here for you. Only the members
can make it successful.
We have three events scheduled for December. First is the
C-Gulls Holiday Party on Saturday, 6 December with the
Sundance Band for your dancing pleasure. Next is our annual
FOCUS boat parade and chili dinner on Saturday, 13
December. This is always a fun and worthwhile event.
Decorate your boat and join the fun. And to end the year in
style, our annual New Year’s Eve party with the band
Breez’n.
So please come to the club and try your hand at night Bocce
Ball, Wii Bowling, gaming, bingo, read the monthly selected
book or just enjoy dinner, a drink at the bar or the
camaraderie of other members.
Please remember to invite your friends to enjoy an evening at the club. Our
best recruiting tool continues to be our members talking to their friends and
neighbors. When they join, you will have one month of free dues. With all of
the activities, we have to offer you certainly do not need to own a boat to
reap the benefits of membership.
I am always open to new ideas and thoughts on membership. Feel free to
contact me on any suggestions you may have.
Please make sure you log into our web site and give it a look. Under the list
of members, there are photos. If you have not submitted a photo, please do
so. This helps new members put names with faces.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!

Thank you for electing me to be your Sail Fleet
Captain, I’m looking forward to a fun and exciting
year.
A little about myself for those that do not know me. I
have worked with Darrell McNurlan on Race
Committee since the Spring Classic series and have been a sail racer
myself both in Washington State and most recently in San Diego with
Mark Burrows on Jennifer K, when I’m not doing Race Committee for
CCYC. Darrell has indoctrinated me well and is ready to be your new
Fleet Captain.
Let’s start by kicking off the Winter Classic Series! The series is fast
approaching. The first of the four series race starts on December 7, 2014,
Noon start for Class 1. Don’t forget to register for the series. To register
go to the CCYC website (ccyc.org) select Sail Fleet, Racing Information,
register under upcoming events. Add your information then hit submit.
You’re ready to race the Winter Classic Series. There is no charge for
CCYC Members: there is a $30 registration fee for Non-members. If you
need assistance in the registration process, let me know.
I’m pretty sure Van Hughes knows exactly how many days to Beer Can
101 so stay tuned for many updates to come for the upcoming Beer Can
Races and Beer Can 101. Lots of fun things in store, keep an eye out on
the Sail Board for updates.
If you are interested in volunteering for Race Committee please contact
me at [email protected] or find me at CCYC in the Burgee Lounge.
Rick Sipes
I look forward to serving as your Dockmaster
for the upcoming year. Being a long time
member and marina tenant, I have a great
appreciation for the duties and responsibilities of
the position. I know most of the boaters in the
marina, and for those that I do not; I look
forward to meeting you.
Working with the Port Captain, Allen Sweetow, we are going to
address ongoing issues with A & C docks along with the
upcoming "Clean Marina" program renewal. We would like to
have several social meetings throughout the year with the marina
tenants to bring us all together and cover any Marina issues or
Clean Marina updates.
We all have two things in common, we are boaters and CCYC
members, which means we all like to have fun and we take pride
in our club. To that end, I would hope that we can all participate
in the decorating of our boats at Christmas. Even if you’re not
into it big time, a string of lights around your bow rails would
sure help brighten up the Christmas season.
Darrell McNurlan
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful
holiday season.
EARLY REGISTRATION FOR BEER CAN 101
I’m encouraging all of the members to
participate in this year’s FOUCS boat
parade. Get into the holiday spirit: put some
lights on your boat and join in on the fun.
As the Fleet Captain for CCYC this year, I
would like to remind members of the boating aspects of a yacht
club.
With only 108 days to go, early registrants are feeling smug about being
ahead of the game, according to the B/C 101 Race Management. Big
savings on entrance fees, regalia, workshops, and electronic charting
programs were made; they were just a phone call away.
For those members not hooked up with a race boat, now is the time to
start looking for a Beer Can Racer. Four fleets including the diminutive
Harbor 20 boats are looking for skilled, semi-skilled, and non-skilled
crew. Beer drinkers are preferred although there are a few spots open in
the “family fleet” for wine guzzlers; oenophiles I think they call
themselves, although I have heard them referred to as “Grape Nuts”
Come, have fun, expand your vocabulary at mark rounding’s and see if
those pricey serenity pills really do work.
Call Van Hughes (assistant principal race officer) 619-405-5248 for
Questions.
It is my goal, over the course of the year, to address the
traditions, protocols, and courtesies of boating. I hope that you
will enjoy learning about them, and I will do my best to give the
background and history as well as the rules.
I have a great deal of boating experience. Power and sail,
modern yachts to traditional sailing ships, navigation, rules of
the road, knots too nautical traditions.
If you have a question about boating I will most likely know or
know where to find the assure.
My contact information:

A good time was had by all at our
events this year. Our last event, on
November 6, was a “pop-up”: a
ferry ride to the Broadway Pier,
short walk, and happy hour at
Ruth’s Chris. We enjoyed the ferry rides—with a full moon on the
way back—and excellent food and drinks at a special table set
especially for the eighteen of us. Those of you who have not yet
been to Ruth’s Chris for happy hour, it is well worth the trip, by
ferry or car (thanks to Donna Love for her recommendation).
By popular demand after the Ruth’s Chris event, we are planning a
Ferry Landing pub crawl for our 2015-opening celebration. By
Tuesday January 27 your New Year’s Eve rush should be over, so
join us at Peohe’s, Il Fornaio, and Candelas. See the flyer in this
Navigator; sign-up sheet in the hallway.
The first boating event for 2015 will be a January Raft-Up in
Antigua Basin planned by our Commodore, Steve Bowman. If it is
anything like 2014’s Antigua Basin Raft-Up, it will be
well-attended, with perfect weather and lots of good times. Details
to follow.
On Saturday February 24, please join us on our trip to Sony
Studios in Culver City to be in the “Jeopardy” audience. Your
cruise captains have made this pilgrimage for nine years in a row,
and it is really interesting and enjoyable. We are already known by
some of the studio folks as “The Yacht People”! The cost is $69
per person and the sign up sheet is in the hallway.
Do join us on our Transatlantic Raft-Up in March-April on the last
Seabourn voyage of the incomparable Legend. We will be staying
in St. Thomas USVI for two nights before the sailing, and in
Barcelona for 4 nights afterwards (at the Citadines Ramblas).
Flights can be booked independently, through Seabourn, or
through our travel agent, [email protected]. Whichever
you choose, you should do it fairly soon.
We had a wonderful time last year with all of you. Thank you for
your suggestions and support, your good company, and the
kindness you have shown to us. We look forward to being your
Cruise Captains for 2015!

As your new Power Captain, I am looking forward to planning several
fun events for our electric boat fleet.
Greg Dillon (former Power Captain) and I met to discuss all the
electric boat events for 2015. With two heads together and the
additional help of Armando Rodriguez, a fun calendar is being
planned. If you have ideas for electric boat events, please call or email
me.
The first event is in February and will be a Valentine's theme. Sign-ups
will start in January. Get your boats ready. It will be an electrifying
year on the water!

MAJOR UPSET IS SURPRISE
ENDING TO BOCCE FINALE
2nd Assistant Deputy Director
CCYC Bocce Operations
The private aviation area of Lindbergh Field
was clogged with the private jets of bocce
aficionados arriving to witness the Balls of
Destiny Spaghetti Bowl Championship
held Sunday, November 2nd at your CCYC.
The Lynberg Cup, named after Roger Lynberg, who with Mel
Blair built our magnificent courts, is awarded the Championship
and is the pinnacle of international bocce excellence in the final
event of the 2014 Balls of Destiny Tour.
In a startling outcome, the team of Frank and Mary Youngman
emerged from the contest as totally unexpected tournament
winners. Based on their previous record of 0-27 in league play,
and only recently returned from the Triple D Alaskan Dirt Circuit
where their highest ranking was “participant,” they were the most
distant of long shots. With the exception of Mr. Youngman’s
mother, no one in the estimated crowd of over 16,000 fans in
attendance had placed a wager on the Youngman duo.
This astonishing circumstance resulted in the use of PEDs
(performance enhancing drugs) being widely suspected, but after
rigorous testing, no violations were discovered, as fortunately the
Moscow Mule (official drink of the World Bocce Federation) is
not a banned substance.
Bocce luminaries from the season long build-up to the finale
included 4th of July tournament winners John Connolly and
Brian Goelz, who were the runners-up in the championship, along
with the teams of R.G. Head and Charlie Martoglio, and
Commodores Mike and Dianna Durgin, who fought their way
into the semi-final rounds. Heavily favored previous 2- time
winners Ken Mischel and Carolyn Carswell, and Southwestern
tournament champs Dave and Donna Love were eliminated in the
early going, giving rise to concerns that something was gravely
amiss, fears that were later determined to be unfounded. (See
paragraph 4 above.)
Due to the extraordinary high level of play that has been
demonstrated by the Balls of Destiny Tour at CCYC, we have
been selected as an Olympic qualifying site for the 2016 Summer
Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A state of the art Olympic
bocce facility is currently under construction in Rio, scheduled for
completion in 2019.
Thanks to all who participated this season, both players and
spectators, and we look forward to the return of the tour in March
2015.
In the interim, Night Bocce will be the focus, with all comers
welcomed on occasional Wednesday nights (check for flyer
updates) for informal swimsuit optional 5-point games with lighted
psychedelic balls, liberal refreshments, and a blazing fire pit to
warm those sans swimsuits. See you on the courts!

Hello Ladies,
By the time, you read this article Thanksgiving
will have passed. Now we are into the Christmas,
Hanukah, and Kwanza season. There is so much

just like to say thank you all for such a great year! The time has
gone by so fast. I look forward to a New Year with thanks to the
2014 BOD and welcome to the 2015 BOD.
I have a couple of reminders; Nov. 30 is the day we decorate the
