The Coyotes have won their last two, beating Montana State at home and topping Montana in Missoula. USD held those teams to an average of 57.5 points on 36 percent shooting from the field and a 11 of 41 effort from beyond the arc. The Coyotes also forced 28 turnovers. Brandon Bos, a senior from Markham, Ontario, is the league scorer in the Summit League at 16.7 points per game. He averaged a team-high 14 points against the Montana schools and hit a game-winning, 15-foot jumper to beat Montana State. Trey Norris has averaged 28 minutes off the bench in his last two games and scored 10 points against both Montana teams. He’s made 7 of 11 shots in his last two included both 3-point shots he has taken. Senior center James Hunter scored a season-high nine points last time out against Montana. He also had four rebounds and two blocks. Hunter, a transfer from Washington State, has started 12 of 13 games this season. Tyler Larson, a 6-3 senior guard from Las Vegas, currently leads the Summit League and ranks 65th nationally in rebounding at 8.2 boards per game. Larson has six double-doubles this season. Only 14 players nationally have more. Bos (961 career points) is 39 points shy of 1,000 career points as a Coyote. Bos would become the 44th player in program history to score 1,000 points. Larson has attempted 78 free throws this season. Only 33 players in the nation have attempted more. Bos is the Summit League’s top free-throw shooter at 81.9 percent (min. 2 made FT per game). Casey Kasperbauer has made 28 three-pointers this season and 136 as a Coyote. He is the fourth-leading long-range shooter in the Summit League this season. Eric Robertson contributed a career-best 29 minutes off the bench against UNLV. He scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. Tre Burnette’s high point of the young season was a 24-point performance against Creighton. Burnette had 16 points in the first half and helped the Coyotes jump out to a 15-5 lead. Of South Dakota’s eight losses, seven were played outside of Vermillion, three went into overtime and three others were decided by eight points or less. Of South Dakota’s 14 non-conference opponents prior to the start of Summit League play, seven were 20-game winners a year ago. One of the missing links in the Coyotes’ lineup this season is junior forward Tyler Flack, who has been fighting off a myriad of injuries and has not played yet this season. Prior to this season, Flack had yet to miss a game during his Coyote career. He averaged 8.5 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. South Dakota leads the Summit League and ranks 56th nationally in offensive rebounding. The Coyotes average 13 offensive rebounds and nearly 14 secondchance points per game. South Dakota’s 14-man roster includes eight returning players and six newcomers. Three players who have been featured in the starting lineup – James Hunter (Washington State), Tre Burnette (Williston State) and Sekou Harris (South Plains) – are in their first seasons at USD. South Dakota had 23 consecutive winning seasons from 1988-89 to 2010-11. The Coyotes have had double-digit wins in each of their last 26 seasons. USD has finished 10-18, 10-20 and 12-18 the last three seasons. Craig Smith is back as a head coach for the first time since 2007. Smith has been an assistant coach for Tim Miles for eight seasons during his career and at three different institutions: Mayville State (1996-97), Colorado State (2008-13) and Nebraska (2012-14). He was the head coach at Mayville State from 2004-07. Expect the Coyotes to attack opponents with motion offense and GATA defense (get after their...rears). Smith expects to be the toughest and hardest-working team on the court, the first to dive on the floor for loose balls and is looking for 30 tipped passes per game. Notes (cont.) A former NAIA National Coach of the Year, Nebraska was the fourth school that Smith had worked at with coach Tim Miles (Mayville State, North Dakota State and Colorado State). While at Nebraska, Smith helped lead the Huskers to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 for the first time since 1998. While at Colorado State, Smith helped the Rams to a 20-win season in 2011-12 and the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003. In his return to Mayville State, he took a program with a 1-25 record and guided them to a berth in the NAIA II national tournament, a 16-game improvement. Mayville State was 72-29 in three seasons with Smith as head coach including three national tournament appearances, an Elite Eight appearance, and a trip to the 2007 NAIA II National Championship game. Smith was named the NAIA II National Coach of the Year in 2007. He was also named Dakota Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007, as his teams won back-to-back regular-season and conference titles. Smith’s MSU teams were characterized by their hard work and first-class attitude on and off the court. Mayville State’s 2006-07 team was honored and recognized nationally with the Dr. James Naismith-Emil Liston Sportsmanship Award. A native of Stephen, Minn., Smith began his collegiate coaching career at Mayville State during the 1996-97 season. An assistant to Miles, MSU went 18-11, won the regular season NDCAC title and the conference postseason tournament before advancing to the NAIA II national tournament. Smith then worked as a graduate assistant at Northern State during the 1997-98 season, followed by time at Minot State as an assistant coach for three years, and then as an assistant coach and director of basketball operations under Miles at North Dakota State before returning to Mayville State as the program’s head coach in 2004. Smith is a 1996 graduate of the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He earned his master’s degree from Northern State in teaching and learning. Smith and his wife, Darcy, have three boys (Landon, Brady and Carson) and a daughter (Lauren). Staff Gameli Ahelegbe Assistant / 1st season Oakdale, Minn.
