southendlearningnetwork Weekly Newsletter your interactive guide to the week’s key news and events Issue 54 - 9 January 2015 Spring Term 2015 Dear Colleagues, Happy New Year! I would like to start by offering a warm welcome to Maxine Woods to the Learning & Improvement team. Maxine is joining us as a primary adviser responsible for achievement and will be leading key stage 1 and 2 moderation this academic year. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Headteachers and EY staff that welcomed Margaret Murray, our EY adviser, and Jackie Cousins in to their schools this week. Jackie is a Serco Managing Inspector who is working with us to close EY gaps and raise the attainment of disadvantaged EY pupils. We will be welcoming Jackie back next month to deliver two training days - further details to follow shortly. I would also like to welcome Julie Hollingsworth, who joins us as the new SEN Quality Assurance Manager. Julie will be working with schools and the Learning & Improvement Team to close the attainment gap for learners with SEN. I am also pleased to inform you that following Gill Manton’s relocation to the South, Cathy Braun is the new Interim Group Manager for Integrated Locality Services. Congratulations to Southend High School for Boys being rated outstanding in every category by Ofsted in their inspection at end of December. This is a fantastic achievement for Robin Bevan and the entire team. In October I commissioned a review of our school risk assessment processes and will be sharing the findings with you in the next edition. Please make sure all your information regarding eligible pupils for Free School Meals is up to date on your school’s management system ahead of the Spring 2015 census - starting next week on Thursday 15th January. Please ensure all other relevant data is also completely up to date for the census. All schools will shortly be receiving their ‘Brochure of LA Services 2015-16’ to enable you to book your services. There are some exciting new services for schools including new services from Procurement, Media and the Child & Family Early Intervention Service. Further information is outlined in the letter accompanying the brochure. I am delighted that at our Leadership Conference on 19th and 20th March 2015 we will be welcoming: Sir John Jones, Stephen Drew and Andrew Cook HMI (our new Ofsted Regional Director for the East of England). These sought-after guests will be delivering keynote speeches, as well as being involved with other aspects of the Conference, including leading interactive workshops. Detailed biographies will feature on SLN in coming weeks. Conference booking will soon be available on the Southend Learning Network and I am looking forward to seeing you all there for what will be an exciting and important event for the Southend Education Community. And finally, congratulations to the Jim Johnson and the team at Edwards Hall Primary School, and Lynn Morris and the team at Earls Hall Junior School for winning in the Pupil Premium Awards 2015. More information about the awards can be found by visiting www.pupilpremiumawards.co.uk.
