This has been possible because of the efforts of our chairman Dr.G.Siddesh ,all the Governing Council Members and all other members from across the state.This honour is being given to Karnataka for the first time after 1997. The venue for Note : It is mandatory that all presenting authors must be members of ASI. ASI forms can be downloaded from www.asiindia.org the conference will be Mysore. The winning of the MYSURU bid is just the beginning. Our Chairman Dr. G. We stood second to Tamilnadu and Pondicherry state chapter. The ASI central committee has awarded Karnataka a Silver medal and 75,000 rupees to conduct a CME under the ASI and KSC-ASI banner.This must be an inspiration for us to bag the gold medal next time in 2015. Live workshop on Hernia The Live workshop on hernia repair was conducted at KIMS,Hubli by the Department of General Surgery in association with the ASI Hubli-Dharwad City Chapter on the 24th of May,2014 at the P&SM lecture hall, KIMS,Hubli. KMC allotted 2 Credit hours for attending this program. Two eminent surgeons were invited as guest faculty for the live workshop, Dr, M.G Bhat, Director Nova Medical Centre, Bangalore and Dr Prasanna Yavalkar, Associate Prof, SKN Medical College, Pune. The programme started with breakfast followed by the inaugural function presided over by Incharge HOD Prof.Dr.Gurushanthappa and the Organizing secretary Prof.Dr. Ishwar R. Hosamani, welcomed the gathering. The workshop began with a talk by Dr. M.G Bhat on inguinal hernia titled “Update on inguinal hernia” where he discussed the current concepts in the management of inguinal hernia and also the role of laparoscopy in inguinal hernia repair, this was followed by Dr Yavalkar’s talk on incisional and ventral hernias, where he spoke in depth about the principles of management of ventral hernia and the advantages of using non fixation mesh . The live operative session began with the demonstration of inguinal hernia repair by open method using PROLOR mesh by Dr. M.G Bhat , this was followed by incisional hernia repair by Dr. Yavalkar using the Octamesh. The third operative procedure was again performed by Dr, M.G Bhat, where he demonstrated the repair of a paraumbilical hernia by using the Octamesh. This was followed by lunch. The post lunch session started with the demonstration of inguinal hernia repair using PROFLOR mesh by Dr. Yavalkar and this was followed by an open one to one discussion between the delegates and the guest faculty. To. Incharge HOD Prof.Dr.Gurushanthappa appreciated whole team members for their efforts in making the workshop a grand success. he expressed that CME was very productive for the post graduate students who attended it, and it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to interact with expert surgeons from other parts of the state and country. CME programme held on 29th June 2014 at SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital The ASI Hubli- Dharwad chapter in Association with the Department of Surgery and the Department of Radio-Diagnosis of the SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital at Dharwad, conducted a Continuing Medical Education programme titled ‘Radiology for Surgeons’, on the 29th June 2014. The faculty were Dr S.K.Joshi, Professor and Head of the Department of RadioDiagnosis and Dr Narendra Shah, Associate Professor of Radio-Diagnosis of the SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital. The programme was from 10:30 AM to 02:00 PM with a 10 minute tea break in between, and was conducted as per schedule, in the hospital auditorium. Conventional radiology of the Chest, Chest Trauma, and Conventional radiology of the Abdomen were covered in detail by the two speakers. Breakfast and Lunch were provided, which was sponsored by Abbott General Care division. 92 delegates, including the office bearers of the ASI Hubli-Dharwad chapter, attended the programme.The programme was well appreciated by all the delegates. He informed the members of the Skill Course program to be held on 30th,Nov,2014 at SDM Sattur by J&J. ASI BANGALORE BRANCH A report of activities of Surgical Society of Bangalore & ASI City Chapter during the year 2014. We started the year with first executive committee meeting (ECM) on 16th January 2014 along with senior surgeons and all the heads of the Institutes taking part in the academic activities of the society, which was well attended and work was carried forward keeping in mind all the suggestions. It was unanimously agreed to intimate the members about the activities electronically by email, message and on the website. We formed various sub committees involving EC members and progress was reviewed in the subsequent EC meetings so as to remain efficient: - A). Employment Assistance – new job advertisements are published on our website and has received good response. We need to encourage this to bridge the gap between hospitals and aspirants. B). Monthly meet Attendance – task was given to secretary so that personal invitation was extended to members. C). Conducting CMEs & Basic skill courses – highlighted below. D). Website(www.ssbasicc.org) – updated frequently so as to reflect the day to day activities of the society. E). Surgeons Day & 40 years (Ruby) celebrations and CSEP – which helped us to sail through the events well prepared. F). Members Directory: & PGs directory – effort was made to increase the members. G). By Law Subcommittee – long felt need for revising the bylaws and oration guidelines was fulfilled. H). Free medical camps – efforts was made to initiate camps. The clinical meetings were all excellent with good quality scientific papers and well attended. Apart from these MCM the society was associated with many other programs; 1). CME on 17 January 2014 “Current clinical and research advances in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma” was conducted with hepatobiliary and liver transplant team of BGS Global hospital at hotel La Marvella in Jayanagara. Renowned surgeon Dr. Christian Toso from University of Geneva, Switzerland was the guest speaker. 2). CME on February, 19 with Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) accreditation for one credit point was held at API bhavan. The theme was “Challenges in Management of HPB Surgery” which was organized by BGS global hospital along with MVJ medical college hospital. Dr. Prabhakar – KMC observer along with President of KMC, Dr. Veerabhadrappa visited the CME program and appreciated the full attendance of 250 members and active participation in the program. 3). CME on “colorectal cancer management update” conducted by HCG cancer Institute at hotel Lee Meridian on 29 March 2014. 4). CME on is “Safety in Bariatric & Metabolic surgery” Live workshop & CME was held on May 3rd and 4th, 2014 at Sheraton Hotel, Bangalore in association with Colombia Asia referral hospital, Bangalore. In this CME there were 8 live surgeries of different techniques and also guest lectures, panel discussions and debates from National and international faculty, Dr Robert Rutlej from USA. The CME was preceded by hands on endo-stapling workshop. We had accreditation by Karnataka Medical Council with 4 credit hours and attended by KMC observer Dr. Prabhakar. 5). We co-hosted KMC accredited CME “Reflections in surgery” on 15 & 16 August at Bangalore medical college alumni auditorium. This CME was conducted by Dr. Shekar K.S, Chairman, Bangalore, hospital, past president of ASI and senior plastic surgeon. 6). The CME “Hernia update meeting” on 24th August at hotel atria, which was joint meeting with the hernia society of India. The experienced laparoscopic surgeons of the city shared their experience and available evidence for the practice of laparoscopic hernia surgery. 7). On 26, 27 & 28 September we co hosted the International college of surgeons (ICS) of Indian section annual national meeting (ICSISCON 2014) at hotel capitol. This conference was also KMC accredited with six CME hours with the theme of “Multi disciplinary surgery”. The meeting was attended by nearly 400 surgeons of various specialties across India. 8). On 18th October we co hosted CME “updates in the management of carcinoma breast” conducted by KIDWAI Institute of Oncology including live demonstration of several surgeries at KIDWAI auditorium. This CME was KMC accredited and was inaugurated by Mayor of Bangalore Ms. Shantha Kumari. Orations subcommittee and Bylaws revision: Orations subcommittee meeting was held on 19 August, 2014 at century club. It was attended by Dr. Shivaram H.V (President), Dr. Ramesh M.K (President elect), Dr. Rajashekara Reddy H.V (Secretary), Dr. Ashok Kumar K.V, Dr. Ramdev K, Dr. Somasekaraiah D, Dr. Vasudeva Rao, Dr. Venkatesh Rao, Dr. K Lakshman. The entire CSEP program was conducted at auditorium of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of chest diseases (RGICD) (SD Sanatorium), Someshwara Nagar, 1st Main Road, Dharmaram College Post, Bangalore – 560 029 (NIMHANS Campus). Dr. Shashidar Buggi – Director of RGICD, staff and students kind heartedly helped us throughout the program from 16th to 21st November 2014. Work shop of skills training Pre conference workshop on 16th Sunday as part of CSEP and the entire CSEP was conducted at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of chest diseases (RGICD). The work shop was sponsored by Ethicon institute of surgical training. About 64 delegates were trained in both the open surgery skills and laparoscopy skills. Inauguration The CSEP inauguration was done on 17th Monday by the Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of health sciences (RGUHS) Dr. Ravindranath. This was graced by the guest Dr. Shashidar Buggi – Director of RGICD. Dr. Nityananda Shetty Memorial Lecture This was delivered Dr. Shashidar Buggi – Director of RGICD. The topic was “Prospect of being thoracic surgeon in India and what a general surgeon can do in chest trauma” Millennium gold medal award The millennium gold medal award presentationwas conducted on Tuesday 18th November. There were 6 papers from various institutes. Dr. Nischal Pandya won the prize for his paper titled “subxiphoid coronary artery bypass grafting novel approach”. Dr. K.S. Shekar state level quiz The Quiz, Dr. K.S. Shekar state level quiz was conducted by Dr. C.S. Rajan on 19th Wednesday. The preliminary round was held during the lunch time and semifinal and final was held from 5.30 pm to 8.00 pm. This was followed by Dinner. The quiz program was attended by Dr. K.S. Shekar and Dr. Siddesh - Chairman, KSC-ASI. Prof. B. Hanumaiah memorial oration & Prof. M. Authikeshavulu memorial oration The CSEP was concluded by the 2 orations delivered on 21st Friday evening at hotel Capitol, Raj bhavan road. Prof. B. Hanumaiah memorial oration was delivered by Dr. C.R. Ballal – the talk was on “surgery teachers past, present and in future”. The Prof. M. Authikeshavulu memorial oration was delivered by Dr. Vasudeva Rao – the talk was on “patient safety and professional development”. The entire CSEP (the CSEP booklet is attached for details) was conducted with specialist lecture in the morning followed by clinical presentation and discussion. This was again followed by lecture and interactive sessions of various specialties daily. The feedbacks from the young surgeons who attend the CSEP were happy with the scientific content, arrangements at the venue, food and hospitality. Special Programs and Initiatives: Surgery Skills Training The surgical skills course was conducted on 6th April and 14th September at Bangalore medical college clinical skills centre training the young surgeons in both open skills and laparoscopy skills. It was an instructional course for PG & Clinics for PG's over 6 days it was conducted in association with Karnataka State Chapter This was apart from the skills course during CSEP in November. I strongly recommend that these skills training programs are needed more often and trainees are asking for it. Payment gateway & Website We have constantly updated the website with all the activities of the society. An effort was made to generate revenue through the advertisements on the website. In keeping with changing times and need for E-communication and payments, we opened payment gateway with the State bank of India (SBI) – which is integrated to our website. There is need for constant up gradation of the website. Cashless transaction We avoided the need for cash transactions by using payment gateway and cheque payment, so as to keep the accounts transparent and accountable. All the CSEP registrations were done by demand draft or direct payment through the newly opened payment gateway. All the payments from the society during the events were made by cheques. Paperless communication We have effectively informed all the members about the activities of the society through the email, message (SMS) and by website display. This will essentially improve the efficacy of the staff, avoids the need for printing & posting, saves money and paper. This indirectly improves the website login numbers and can be used for various activities as outlined in the subcommittees. The morning session was followed by lunch ,in the afternoon session there were clinics for the Post Graduate students conducted by the eminent Surgeons and it was a brain storming session where everyone was made aware of the clinical diagnosis and examination of the patient thoroughly.
