46th ANNUAL
A Press Release was issued by the Diocese of Rockford
regarding Msgr. Brodeski. This can be viewed on the
Diocesan website (rockforddiocese.org).
In this regard, we must remember that all of us fall
short of the glory of God and are in need of God’s
grace. Any time we have gone through difficulties in
life we appreciate the compassion and support of others. Let us pray for each other as we go forward as a community in faith,
hope and love. As your pastor, my heart is always open and I am here
for you.
I pray that all who picked a “Saint for the Year” this past week are excited about your providential selection. Several wonderful stories have
come in regarding people’s connection with their saint. For some it is in
regards to dates or the feast day of the saint, for others the prayer intention. Deacon Larry Motyka actually pulled “St. Lawrence – Deacon.” By
God’s grace, I pulled St. Joseph. It stated, “Pray for all Catholics to have a
greater devotion to the Eucharist and for perpetual adoration chapels to
spread throughout the world.” This is one of my goals at Holy Cross
Parish. That is, to establish a separate perpetual adoration chapel. We
did this in East Dubuque and named the chapel, “St. Joseph Guardian of
the Redeemer!” St. Joseph wants to help us here in Batavia. Perhaps in a
few years, after reducing our debt, we will build something beautiful for
Eucharistic Jesus and augment the beauty of our church. A chapel for
prayer in which there would be no interruption with the adoration
schedule for the weekends would be wonderful. A place with much more
quiet would be a blessing for the adorers and all the faithful.
Several people have asked about the monstrance that is being used in
our chapel. It is not a new monstrance. We had actually used this when
we started Eucharistic adoration in October of 2005. This monstrance
had been cleaned and polished and placed in the sacristy closet. We
began to use it again during our 40 Hours of Exposition in the main
church before Christmas. It is so beautiful that I decided to keep using it.
God bless you with His peace,
Fr. Parker

Spiritual Adoption Month 5 - Your spiritually adopted baby
weighs over one pound now. His mother can feel him moving now. Before he was too small for her to feel. Although
he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be
big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside
uterine wall and dent it - the inside wall of the uterus has
no feeling. We are midway through the pregnancy now.
Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother continue
with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

FROM THE ‘CARD SENDING’ LEADER …
WE NEED YOU! by Kay DiVerde
I have been sending cards to lonely seniors through
the Enriching Lives Ministry (ELM) for over 6 years.
I was a little overwhelmed when I took over
coordinating this part of ELM. As the years go by,
I am amazed and overjoyed at the generosity of
people willing to share their love with others.
It's always so exciting when I get a note from
someone asking for another dozen names to send cards to. Scout groups, youth
groups, classroom teachers and individuals contact me asking for names. What
great lessons our kids are learning about reaching out to others. I know sending
cards is such a rewarding activity for so many people. I am reassured of this
when I get notes from volunteers asking for names to give to their friends and
family to start sending cards. Thank you to all of our volunteers for your generosity. We have many lonely people waiting to hear from you. Please prayerfully consider joining this ministry in the new year.
IF INTERESTED IN HELPING, PLEASE CONTACT THE MINISTRY (SEE ABOVE).
OUR MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Enriching Lives Ministry is
twofold. First, to spiritually and emotionally enrich the lives of the elderly,
homebound, disabled, sick, and any other people needing companionship, love
and/or other assistance through Jesus’ boundless love for all people by providing friendship, caring assistance, enjoyable times, spiritual and social fellowship,
transportation to church and personal functions, other assistance … and love to
these people on a long-term basis. Second, to connect those who want to help
people with those who need assistance.

The above verse from Romans gives each of us much to ponder about our own Baptism on this Sunday which is the Feast
of The Baptism of The Lord.
To use the black-loop-headsets:
1) hang the device around your neck,
2) turn the switch to “ON” and adjust the volume by continuing to twist the switch,
3) ENJOY hearing the Mass with an improvement in clarity
that you may not have experienced previously! When you are
finished using the set, please remember to turn OFF the
switch before you return the headset to one of the ushers.
On February 7th and 8th, Dr. Johnson will be available in the
narthex to help you determine whether your hearing aids
are loop compatible.
If you have additional questions or concerns please contact
the parish office or you may call Audiologist Dr. Lori Johnson
at 815-483-9834.
What is Baptism? Baptism is the sacrament that gives our souls
the new life of sanctifying grace by which we become children
of God and heirs of heaven.
Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water
and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John
3:5)

Did you know? That at the death of a Christian, whose life of faith
was begun in the waters of Baptism and strengthened at the
Eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased
because of its confident belief that death is not the end nor does it
break the bonds forged in life. Life has been changed, not ended.
The Church also ministers to the sorrowing and consoles them in the
funeral rites with the comforting word of God and the sacrament of
the Eucharist. (Order of Christian Funerals). We are blessed that the
Church loves us and blesses us from our beginning to our end as we
know it in this life!
Did you also know that the small white garment that is placed on
the person at the time of Baptism represents our dying with Christ?
By the rite of the Sacrament of Baptism, the body becomes the
Temple of God and this symbolism reminds us always that "The
body is for the Lord". The prayer that is said at Baptism is a petition
that this garment be kept without stain, "Receive this white garment. Never let it become stained, so that when you stand before
the judgment seat of Our Lord you may have life everlasting".
Likewise, the placing of the pall, the large white cloth/garment, on
the casket before the funeral Mass represents that person's rising
with Christ. It is the last opportunity for us to clothe that person in
Christ. This affords a beautiful gesture for the family to perform for
their loved one at the time of the funeral. Hence, the word pallbearer (those who carry the casket in and out of the church) comes from
the word pall (the white cloth that covers the casket). The pall also
reminds us that the body is the Temple of the Soul and therefore,
we honor and respect the body at all times...even in death!
It is beautiful how everything in our faith is woven together and that
the celebration of the Christian funeral brings to mind for all the
love of God's grace and mercy as well as our hope and consolation in
the resurrection. Our Catholic faith is always there to help us meet
the human need to turn always to God in times of crisis. He walks
with us in our joy and in our sorrow!
As this new year is beginning to unfold and you are reflecting on the
Baptism of Our Lord and your Baptism, think about these wise
words from Saint Padre Pio:
"And yet, once our last hour has come, and our hearts have ceased
to beat, it will be all over for us, and the time to merit becomes the
time to demerit. We will present ourselves to Christ the Judge,
exactly as death finds us. Our cries and supplications, our tears, our
sighs of repentance, which, while still on earth would have gained
for us God's heart, which could, with the help of the Sacraments,
have changed us from sinners to saints, now will be worth nothing;
the time for mercy is past, now is the time for justice".
Let us pray: Please, God, keep me grateful, faithful and watchful as
this new year unfolds before me day-by-day. May I always honor my
body as the Temple of my Soul so that when I present it back to You,
I will hear You say those words that I long to hear..."Well done, my
good and faithful servant"! Jesus, I trust in You!
Please Note: The St. Michael Ministry of Compassionate Care will
meet this Thursday, January 15, 2015, 7:00 PM in the CECC Room
202. We'll be looking for you! Please come!

For Those Entering Delnor Hospital in Geneva - Due to HIPAA laws and new changes at
Delnor/Cadence Hospital, if you are a patient at Delnor Hospital and wish to have the sacrament of Communion brought to you during your stay, you must inform the hospital upon
registering that you are a Catholic and a member of Holy Cross Church in Batavia. In addition, each evening you must let your nurse know that you wish to receive Holy
Communion the following day.
The recognition of the extent to which we are blessed
by God materially, mentally and spiritually
should lead first to gratitude and then to generosity.
