St. Anne’s School ….
From Humble Beginnings
St. Anne’s School began in January 1955 as a parochial school. It was founded by Father, now Canon David John Pugh.
Fr. Pugh was the Priest-in-charge of St. Anne’s Parish Church in Fox Hill; he was also a teacher at St. John’s College, then
the only Secondary School of the Diocese of Nassau and The Bahamas.
The motivating force in founding the school was an incident that took place in
the early days of Canon Pugh’s Ministry at St. Anne’s Church. He asked a boy of
about fifteen years of age what his name was, and being unable to understand his
reply, Canon Pugh asked him to write it down. Canon Pugh was quite surprised
when the boy burst into tears. After much gentle talking, the young boy revealed
to his great shame that he could not write.
Recognizing the need for schooling in the Fox Hill vicinity, Fr. Pugh utilized the
Old Parish Hall and converted it to three classrooms; he also made use of the
garage. Thus began the Parish School of St. Anne with twenty-six students and
four teachers under the Principalship of Fr. David J. Pugh.
Due to the lack of classrooms and the increasing number of students some classes had to be taught in the churchyard, under the sapodilla and almond trees, and in
the church graveyard. Over the years, as the school flourished, additional classrooms were built to the extent that outdoor teaching is now voluntary instead of compulsory.
The school was initially operated by St. Anne’s Parish Church and governed by a Board of Governors. The first members
of the Board were: Fr. D. J. Pugh, Chairman, Dr. Cleveland Eneas (deceased), Mr. Wenzel Nicholls, Mr. Cecil Bethell
Sr. (deceased), Mr. L.V. Taylor and Mr. Edwin Deal (deceased). In the late 1970’s the school became a Diocesan School
under the aegis of the Anglican Central Education Authority.
Over the years, St. Anne’s School has developed into a flourishing and renowned educational institution and has a staff
of more than sixty teachers. The student population has increased to more than seven hundred students.

MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP
I am delighted and honoured to greet the St. Anne’s School
family as the school celebrates 60 years of existence.
It is a tremendous milestone upon which we reflect as we offer
thanks to Almighty God.
In 1954 The Bahamas was a different place. Women could not
vote, majority rule had not yet been achieved, and most Bahamian children did not have access to a high school education.
There was not a television in every home. Many homes had
transistor radios. No one had a “stereo”. The computer and
cellular technology did not yet exist.
In short, much of what characterizes our everyday life today
did not obtain at that time. My, my! How far we have come!
In 1954 there was, however, like today, a NEED for education,
and there was far more of a widespread YEARNING for it than
there is today when education is often taken for granted.
Conceived in the heart and desire of the late Canon David John
Pugh, then Rector of St. Anne’s Parish, the school was born to
provide education to poor, black children whom opportunity,
resources and the social norms of the day prevented from get-
ting the same. Bear in mind that, at that time, the Ministry of
Education as we have it now did not exist, and the Government
did not have the proliferation of schools that we now see all over
New Providence.
Over the decades, St. Anne’s grew and has provided consistently
a solid, wholesome educational experience comprised of academics, spiritual grounding, socialization, civic consciousness
and the other elements which make a well-rounded person.
Her graduates serve in every sphere of Bahamian life and beyond – which is what a school is supposed to do: create citizens
to people and perpetuate the whole of society.
We acknowledge the contributions of all Board members, Anglican Central Education Authority members, Education Department officers, principals, administrators, clergy, teaching
and ancillary staff, students, parents, friends, benefactors and
others who have given of themselves and of their resources to
keep “this vessel” afloat and thriving. Thank you all for what
you have done.
The Diocese is so proud of this institution.
My wife, Joann, joins me in offering the St. Anne’s School family heartiest congratulations and assurance of prayers.
Yours in Christ,

PROCESSIONAL HYMN........................................................................................... “Praise to The Holiest In The Height”
PRAISE to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise;
In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways.
And that a higher gift than grace
Should flesh and blood refine,
God’s Presence and His very Self,
And Essence all-divine.
O loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
A second Adam to the fight
And to the rescue came.
O generous love! that He, Who smote
In Man for man the foe,
The double agony in Man
For man should undergo;
O wisest love! that flesh and blood,
Which did in Adam fail,
Should strive afresh against the foe,
Should strive and should prevail;
And in the garden secretly
And on the Cross on high,
Should teach His brethren, and inspire
To suffer and to die.
Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise:
In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways.
INTROIT HYMN.................................................................................................................... “Now Thank We All Our God”
Now thank we all our GOD,
With hearts, and hands, and voices
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mother’s arms
Hath bless’d us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.
O may this bounteous GOD
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace,
And guide us when perplex’d
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to GOD
The FATHER now be given,
The SON and HIM who reigns
With them in highest Heaven,
The ONE Eternal GOD,
Whom earth and Heav’n adore,
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

“Israel, remember this! The Lord and the Lord alone-is our God. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your
soul, and with all your strength. Never forget these commands that I am giving you today. Teach them to your children.
Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working. Tie them on
your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder. Write them on the door-posts of your houses.
“In time to come your children will ask you, ‘Why did the Lord our God command us to obey all these laws? Then tell
them, “We were slaves of the King of Egypt, and the Lord rescued us by his great power. With our own eyes we saw him
work miracles and do terrifying things to the Egyptians and to the king and to all his officials. He freed us from Egypt
to bring us here and give us this land, as he had promised our ancestors he would. Then the Lord our God commanded
us to obey all these laws and to honour him. If we do, he will always watch over our nation and keep it prosperous. If we
faithfully obey everything that God has commanded us, he will be pleased with us.

READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in 2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:5
But as for you, continue in the truths that you were taught and firmly believe. You know who your teachers were and
you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the
wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the
truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, so that the person who serves God may be
fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and because he is coming to rule
as King, I solemnly urge you to preach the message, to insist upon proclaiming it (whether the time is right or not), to
convince, reproach, and encourage, as you teach with all patience. The time will come when people will not listen to
sound doctrine, but will follow their own desires and will collect for themselves more and more teachers who will tell
them what they are itching to hear. They will turn away from listening to the truth and give their attention to legends.
But you must keep control of yourself in all circumstances; endure suffering, do the work of a preacher of Good News,
and perform your whole duty as a servant of God.

GRADUAL HYMN .........................................................................................................“Guide Me O thou Great Redeemer”
Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand;
Bread of Heaven,
Feed me now and evermore.
Feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing streams do flow:
Let the fiery cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through;
Strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my strength and Shield.
Be Thou still my strength and Shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside:
Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side;
Songs of praises
I will ever give to Thee, I will ever give to Thee.

THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were
made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of
the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was
buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at
the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will
have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the
Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN..........................................................................................................................“To God Be The Glory”
To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
To every believer the promise of God;
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
The vilest offender who truly believes,
And opened the Life Gate that all may go in.
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the earth hear His voice!
Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the people rejoice!
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the son;
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.

Father, we offer you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them
we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and
lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your
people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
CENSING.........................................................................................................................“God Is Working His Purpose Out”
God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year,
God is working his purpose out and the time is drawing near;
Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea
From utmost east to utmost west where’er man’s food hath trod,
By the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God,
Give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me,
That the earth may be filled with the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea
What can we do to work God’s work, to prosper and increase
The brotherhood of all mankind, the reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea
March we forth in the strength of God with the banner of Christ unfurled,
That the light of the glorious Gospel of truth may shine throughout the world.
Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free.
That the earth may be filled with the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.
All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed;
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed;
Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
As the waters cover the sea.
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
PRESIDENT:
ALL:
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
PRESIDENT:
ALL:
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
ALL:It is right to give God thanks and praise.
PRESIDENT:
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father almighty, everlasting
God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Because in coming to dwell among us as man, He revealed the radiance
of His glory, and brought us out of darkness into His own marvelous light.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven,
who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
ALL:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
CELEBRANTS: Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought
creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender compassion
you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy
Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of
your new creation.
On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave
it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”
And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink
this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness
of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
PRESIDENT:
Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son.
ALL:
We remember His death
We proclaim His resurrection
We await His coming in glory.
CELEBRANTS: And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and
wine that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus our Lord and Redeemer. As we partake
of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the
Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Anne, St. John The Baptist and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal
inheritance; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:
ALL:Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.
PRESIDENT:
As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:
ALL:Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as in
heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save
us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
PRESIDENT:
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
ALL:Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
THE COMMUNION
PRESIDENT:
My brothers and sisters in Christ, draw near and receive His Body which He gave for you, and His
Blood, which He shed for you. Remember that He died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by
faith with thanksgiving.
ALL:Grant gracious Lord, that we may so eat the flesh of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and drink His
blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him and He in us. Amen.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.
COMMUNION HYMNS
LET US BREAK, BREAD TOGETHER
Let us break bread together on our knees;
Let us break bread together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees
With my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees
With my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me.
MY GOD HOW WONDERFUL THY ART
My God, how wonderful Thou art,
Thy majesty, how bright;
How beautiful Thy mercy seat In depths of burning light!
Let us praise God together on our knees;
Let us praise God together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees;
With my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
O how I fear Thee, living God,
With deep and tender fear;
And worship Thee with trembling hope,
And penitential tears!
How dread are Thy eternal years,
O everlasting Lord,
By prostrate spirits day and night
Incessantly adored!
Yet, I may love Thee, too, O Lord,
Almighty as Thou art;
For Thou hast stooped to ask of me
The love of my poor heart!
How wonderful, how beautiful, The sight of Thee must be;
Thy endless wisdom, boundless power,
And glorious purity! No earthly father loves like Thee,
No mother, e’er so mild,
Bears and forbears as Thou hast done,
With me, Thy sinful child.
Father of Jesus, love’s Reward!
What rapture it will be
Prostrate before Thy throne to lie,
And gaze, and gaze on Thee!
And Now, O Father, Mindful Of The Love
And now, O Father, mindful of the love
That bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s Tree,
And having with us Him that pleads above,
We here present, we here spread forth to Thee
That only Offering perfect in Thine eyes,
The one true, pure, immortal Sacrifice.
And then for those, our dearest and our best,
By this prevailing Presence we appeal;
O fold them closer to Thy mercy’s breast,
O do Thine utmost for their souls’ true weal;
From tainting mischief keep them white and clear,
And crown Thy gifts with strength to persevere.
Look, Father, look on His anointed Face,
And so we come; O draw us to Thy Feet,
And only look on us as found in Him;
Most patient Saviour, Who canst love us still;
Look not on our misusings of Thy grace,
And by this Food, so awful and so sweet,
Our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim:
Deliver us from every touch of ill:
For lo! between our sins and their reward
In Thine own service make us glad and free,
We set the Passion of Thy Son our Lord.
And grant us never more to part with Thee.

POST COMMUNION
ALL:
Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious

out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.
To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

RECESSIONAL HYMN............................................................................................................................. “Our God Reigns”
How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him,
who brings good news, good news.
Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness,
Our God reigns, our God reigns.
(REPEAT)
He had no stately form, He had no majesty,
that we should be drawn to Him.
He was despised and we took no account of Him,
Yet now He reigns with the Most High.
(REPEAT)
It was our sin and guilt that bruised and wounded Him,
It was our sin, that brought Him down.
When we like sheep had gone astray,
Our Shepherd came, and on His shoulders bore shame.
(REPEAT)
Meek as a lamb that’s led out to the slaughterhouse,
dumb as a sheep before its shearer.
His life ran down upon the ground like pouring rain,
That we might be born.
(REPEAT)
Out from the tomb He came with grace and majesty;
HE IS ALIVE, HE IS ALIVE!
God loves us so, see here His Hands, His Feet.
Yet we know,
HE IS ALIVE!
