“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.”
~ 1 Corinthians 6:19a
 From the Desk of Msgr. Dennis 
e-mail: [email protected]
When we look back on our lives all of us
can think of someone who’s had a great
impact on us. Perhaps it was a teacher
who inspired you to do your best even
though the subject was tough and
demanding. It could have been a coach
who encouraged you to keep trying even
though you were tired. Maybe it was
mom or dad, or an uncle or aunt or some other family
member. It’s hard to imagine anyone for whom someone
hadn’t been an inspiration sometime in life.
Heroes never really start out to be heroes; they
just become such. A situation will arise where quick
action is required, or a decision has to be made that lasts a
lifetime and suddenly a hero is born! In the military
heroes are given medals, but rarely has a true hero ever
said “I deserve it!” Instead, a true hero humbly, quietly
accepts whatever honor is accorded and acknowledges
that a source of strength greater than him/herself was the
inspiration for the action taken.
Samuel was just a boy. His mother had been
childless and was thus looked down upon, but God
assured her she would have a son. When she did conceive
and Samuel (which means “God has heard”) was born she
dedicated him to the Lord and he went to live in the
temple with the prophet Eli. While still a young boy
Samuel heard God calling him as we read in today’s First
Reading. He was confused at first, but when Eli
explained to him what was going on Samuel’s response to
God’s call was “Speak, for your servant is listening.” By
being open to God’s call in his life Samuel became a great
prophet. He anointed Saul as King of Israel and then
selected and anointed David as Saul’s successor. Samuel
heard the call of God and rather than ignore it or push it
out of the way he answered it and allowed himself to be
used for God’s work in the world. In effect he did great
things, heroic things; but all Samuel ever considered
himself to be was a servant of the Lord.
How often has God called each and every single
one of us by name? We know He’s calling us; we’ve
heard Him but we don’t listen to Him. Rather than say
“Speak Lord, your servant is listening,” we say “Go away
Lord and leave me alone. I have far too many more
important things to do than to listen to you.”
As Christian people we cannot simply sit by and
let others do the work or support the Church and expect to
be well thought of by anyone. The Lord Himself must
shake His head in frustration at the number of Christians
who simply allow the noise of the world to drown out His
voice while trying to get their attention. If we who say we
are God’s people, faithful Christians, refuse to listen to
God’s call in our lives and respond accordingly how will
the gospel ever be preached or the Church become the
source of compassionate truth for those who are lost and
floundering around in the world?
What is your name? Listen carefully. Can you
really, truly, honestly say that God has never called you to
His service and the support of His Church? Really? Of
course not! The Lord calls all of us all the time. We
might be confused but we need to listen and be ready to
respond when we hear His voice: “Speak, for your servant
is listening!” and then do what He asks us to do. Who do
you inspire? For whom are you a hero?

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR
CHRISTIAN UNITY begins this
Sunday, January 18, and concludes
next Sunday, January 25. This week of prayer is
dedicated not only to prayer, but to work for the cause of
the unity of Christ’s Church which has been so badly
broken over the years. Ecumenism, the work of Christian
Unity, is not an option for Catholics. From the Second
Vatican Council to today, the Church has taught that it is a
vital ministry of every Catholic, indeed of every Christian.
If a Christian refuses to acknowledge this he/she is not a
faithful Christian. If a Catholic refuses to acknowledge
and pray for the unity of the Church that person is not a
faithful Catholic. All Christians are bound together
through baptism to preach the Good News of salvation to
the world. Unless and until Christians of every church or
denomination come together and work as one the gospel
will never be fully proclaimed and Christ will never be
known to the world He came to save. Please offer your
prayers this week for the cause of Christian Unity and the
ecumenical ministry of the Church.
THE ANGLICAN/ROMAN CATHOLIC “DAY OF
DIALOGUE” will take place Saturday, January 24,
2015, at the Roman Catholic Diocesan Pastoral Center,

S.T.D., a member of the Anglican/Roman Catholic
Dialogue U.S.A, Anglican/Roman Catholic International
Commission and the Pontifical Council for Promoting
Christian Unity. The day begins with Morning Prayer at
10:00 a.m., includes lunch and concludes at 12:30 p.m.
The cost is $25.00 per person. To register please send

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION:
Old
customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent
tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick.
People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right
time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement
was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of
bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for
good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More
than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask
for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to
have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware
enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even
be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.”
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem
reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who
are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to
those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those
close to death. When anointing is celebrated early
enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday
Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a
difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind
them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith.
We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile,
heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that
isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a
powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of
illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body

Please note: We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request
our prayers in the bulletin. However, we have had trouble in
keeping the list up-to-date. Many people forget to let us know when
to take a name off the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE
and outdated. We will list names for prayer requests for one month.
After the last Sunday of the month the names on the list will be
taken off and a new prayer request list will be published the first
Sunday of the month. If someone wishes to have a name
remembered again, the name must be re-submitted to the office.
This will assure that we keep an up-to-date and more readable list.

J
esus’ core message
- that we are one is surely one of the
great mysteries of
existence. This truth is
so hard to accept
because our senses tell
a different story: We
are separate, different,
and alone. We need an image to help us realize what our
senses cannot.
Picture the giant redwood trees of California:
they only grow in groves. Moreover, each tree’s roots
extend and grasp the roots of the surrounding trees,
forming a strong, interconnecting network that serves to
nourish and sustain all of them equally.
Remember the redwood trees and their invisible,
interlocking roots as you discern your vocation. You are
not alone and never will be on your chosen path to Christ.

IF YOU HAVE MOVED within the last
year, please make sure that the parish office
has your change of address. If you have an
e-mail address and/or cell phone number
you would like the parish to have, please
notify us of that as well. Our 2014 yearend tax statements will be sent out in January and it is
important that we get all addresses updated in time for
that mailing.
You may update your information by calling
the parish office, (858)487-4314 between 8:30 a.m. and
3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may also e-mail
your change of address to [email protected].
“San Rafael Catholic Church” We are up to 244 followers!
THE GIFT OF GENEROSITY: We thank everyone
who has supported San Rafael this past year with their
time, talent and financial contributions and look forward
to support from all of our members in the year ahead. If
you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if
you plan to make an additional gift, we encourage you to
look into our electronic giving options. As the pace of life
speeds up, you may find electronic giving a most
welcome way to make contributions.
Visit
www.sanrafaelparish.org and click on the “Online
Giving” button or contact the parish office for more
information.
CHARITABLE GIFTS: A gift of your securities,
including stocks or bonds, is an easy way to make a gift.
By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you can
avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be
due if you sold these assets. For more information on
giving a gift through securities, please visit our diocesan
website at www.diocese-sdiego.org and click on “Giving
– Stock Donations” at the top of the website. Or, you may
contact the Office for Stewardship and Development,
Damian Esparza, at (858)490-8294.
REMEMBER YOUR PARISH IN
YOUR WILL. The work our parish
accomplishes continues through the
thoughtfulness of our parishioners who
remember us in bequests and wills. Please consider
remembering the parish in your bequest and will. The
bequest should be listed as a beneficiary, “Pastor of San
Rafael Parish of San Diego, a Corporation Sole.
Federal ID #27-3859305.” Long after a faithful Christian
has departed this life, that person’s name and generosity
can be continued through the religious education program,
outreach to the poor, building fund, youth ministry or any
other number of worthy parish causes by remembering
San Rafael Parish in the individual’s will or trust. This
would truly be a lasting legacy for anyone!
