Attendance Registration Books:
Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and
chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it
out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.
Holy Communion:
We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves,
accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament
are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM).
If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The
individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white
grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you
would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.
Nursery and Infant Care Rooms:
Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take
south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the
sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from
the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.
Sunday School:
Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child
to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.
Fellowship Between Services:
Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!
Special Needs:
Visual: Large print service folders services are available.
Worship service folders are available in Braille upon request.
Hearing: Hand held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher’s table.
Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs,
scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is
located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack
of the narthex near the sanctuary.

INTRODUCTION
All the baptized have a calling in God's world. God calls not just the clergy but also the youngest
child, like Samuel. The story of the calling of Nathanael plays with the idea of place. Nathanael
initially dismisses Jesus because he comes from Nazareth. But where we come from isn't important;
it's where—or rather whom—we come to. Jesus refers to the story of the vision of Jacob, who called
the place of his vision "the house of God, and...the gate of heaven" (Gen. 28:17). Jesus says he
himself is the place where Nathanael will meet God.
Confession of Peter
Today the church remembers the apostle Peter's great acknowledgement of Jesus as "the Christ,
the Son of the living God." This festival serves as a fitting beginning to the week in which we
particularly pray that all Christians might be united in faith and witness.

At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the Lord comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the
divine word. Though just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to
respond. This marks the beginning of Samuel's prophetic ministry.

Paul is helping the Corinthians understand that God has claimed the entirety of their lives through the death
of Christ. Hence Christian relationships and conduct, including areas of human sexuality, are to reflect the
reality that we belong to Christ and that the Holy Spirit lives within us.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
January 18—Confession of Peter
(Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins)
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25) is framed by
two commemorations, the Confession of Peter (a relatively recent
addition to the calendar) and the older Conversion of Paul. Both
apostles are remembered together on June 29, but these two days
give us an opportunity to focus on key events in each of their lives.
Today we remember that Peter was led by God’s grace to
acknowledge Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt.
16:16). This confession is the common confession that unites us with
Peter and with all Christians of every time and place.
January 19—Henry, Bishop of Uppsala, martyr, died 1156
Henry, an Englishman, became bishop of Uppsala, Sweden, in 1152
and is regarded as the patron of Finland. He traveled to Finland with
the king of Sweden on a mission trip and remained there to organize
the church. He was murdered in Finland by a man he had rebuked
and who was disciplined by the church. Henry’s burial place became
a center of pilgrimage. His popularity as a saint is strong in both
Sweden and Finland.
January 21—Agnes, martyr, died around 304
Agnes was a girl of about thirteen living in Rome, who had chosen a
life of service to Christ as a virgin, despite the Roman emperor
Diocletian’s ruling that had outlawed all Christian activity. The details
of her martyrdom are not clear, but she gave witness to her faith and
was put to death as a result, most likely by the sword. Since her
death, the church has honored her as one of the chief martyrs of her
time.

PARISH NOTES AND NEWS
WE WELCOME BACK TO IMMANUEL REV. ROCKY MEASE! Chaplain Mease was born in
Nashville, Kansas where he was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He attended
Lutheran High Schools in Winfield, Kansas; Seward, Nebraska; and Concordia, Missouri. Rocky’s
college experience was at St. John’s and Concordia Senior College. He graduated from Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis and served parishes in Waverly and Dubuque, Iowa.
Rocky trained for chaplaincy at Wesley Medical Center and serviced as a staff chaplain for Via
Christi. He was called by the Kansas District in August of 1999 and has served the people of the
Kansas District as Executive Chaplain since that time.
Rocky is married to Donna and they have three adult children: Joel (married to Erica), Anna
(married to Richard), and Aaron. Rocky and Donna make their home in Derby, Kansas and are the
very proud grandparents of Joseph James, Kaleb Michael, Grace Evelyn Joyce, Isabella Leigh and
Kaitlynn Marie.
PASTOR RANDY returns to his pastoral duties tomorrow morning.

QUILTING FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF: Immanuel's quilt group will start meeting the
2nd and 4th Thursdays each month to work on mission quilts. We start with a potluck lunch at noon
in the lower level, and work from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. We will meet on the 22nd. With spring just
around the corner, perhaps you might be inspired to clean out your closets and donate fabric to our
project? Cottons are our favorite, but for the mission quilts we can use a variety of fabrics. Also,
clean flat sheets are terrific for quilt backs. Items may be left on the lower level kitchen counter.
The invitation is always open to anyone who would like to join us. Or, we have several Quilt Kits
that you could sew at home. Please see Kristie Rock, Sharon Hettinger, or Dee Kaczor for a kit.

Lord Jesus, for keeping me alive following my fall and surgery. Also, I want to express my
gratitude to Pastor Randy, Karen, and members of Immanuel. Thank you for your prayers, warm
thoughts, cards, letters of encouragement, flowers, and phone calls to Lee. My mantra is the 23 rd
Psalm.
I met many Christians during my rehabilitation. Van and cab drivers who would transport me from
Golden Living West Rehab Center to the Mayo Clinic Campus for appointments. Also, the staff,
medical personnel and pastors at GLW who would also, if they could, pray with me. I evidently
looked terrible. Rochester, MN, citizens have had millions of experiences with seriously ill persons.
They realize the importance of prayer in our lives. Mayo celebrated their sesquicentennial in 2014.
Now, their Mayo Clinic patient numbers are over nine million.
It is a very humbling and gratifying experience when someone asks, “May I pray with you?” —

SAVE YOUR GROCERY STORE RECEIPTS FOR SCHOOL BENEFIT HyVee and Checkers
will donate a portion of the value of purchases to Lawrence schools that collect and turn in the
receipts. You can place them in the basket on the narthex table. Receipts for purchases of groceries,
gasoline, or pharmaceuticals are accepted. The receipts can be taken to a different school each
month. If you’d like to choose a month(s) to deliver receipts to a school of your choice, please
contact JoAnn Siler, 843-3544.
CROP WALK: A TRADITION OF HELP, A LEGACY OF HOPE Thank you, Immanuel, for
your continuing support of the Lawrence CROP Walk for the past 35 years. Our congregation was
able to raise $730.87. Good Shepherd and Immanuel combined raised $3,372.87. (75% will support
Lutheran World Relief and 25% will locally benefit Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition
Kitchen and Jubilee Café.) Immanuel’s Change Challenge garnered $290.87 from Pre -K thru 4 th,
iROCC and IFLY. As a city, Lawrence raised $10,974.87 in 2014 towards curbing hunger and
providing fresh water for our mission to “Walk with Us – Change the World!!” – Delisa K. Drewes,
Lawrence Executive Secretary/Treasurer.
THANK YOU, THRIVENT! Immanuel is blessed to have a partnership with our local Chapter
#30285 of Thrivent Financial – “Connecting Faith and Finances for Good.” Through grants and
fundraisers, we have been able once again to make a difference in 2014 . Some of the ministries
receiving funds included Meals on Wheels, Cans for the Community, Haskell LIGHT Uganda
Service Mission Trip, IFLY’s Lutheran Valley Retreat, and Teach My Kenyan Children through
“Care Abounds in Communities” matching grants. Also, donations went to the Lawrence CROP
Walk, the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade Charity, and the Larry Michel’s family whose home
was destroyed by fire. Prayers for all as we continue our mission in His name.
GOING TO THE HOSPITAL? HAVE A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY WHO IS? Please
notify the church office if you or your family member wishes to be visited when hospitalized.
Because of hospital policies, the church does not receive a phone call notifying us when a member is
admitted to the hospital. Thanks for keeping this in mind!
FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family
members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a sur prising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified
your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for
your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s entryway.
CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff
position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music ministry.
Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the designated
gift envelopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put “new staff
position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one year of salary in
the account before advertising for the position.
