Henry Francis du Pont established Winterthur Museum in 1951 “to afford all those interested an opportunity to study the
conditions surrounding early American home life.” Come discover what he meant by that as you tour his labyrinthine home,
practice mining objects for information, and learn how objects can serve as inspiration for far more than our studies of the past.
This hands-on workshop will help you unlock the beauty and mystery of objects as you explore creative ways to incorporate
them into lessons on writing, math, science, and social studies. Please bring an object that speaks to some aspect of your career
as a teacher. There is a $15 fee due the day of the workshop, payable to Winterthur. Teachers MUST register through
Winterthur at (302) 888-4600 or (800) 448-3883 BEFORE registering with the Delaware Teacher Center.

Many teachers find that they are unable to keep up with the best and newest literature for their students. This program, while a
small step, will allow educators to sample well-written books at each level and apply these to classroom situations. Each county
will read and discuss the same five books: a primary book, an intermediate book, a middle school book, a young adult title, and
an adult book. The 2015 theme is “Girls in Charge.” The books to be read are: Imogene’s Last Stand by Candace Fleming,
Sugar by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Lawless by Jeffrey Salane, Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall, and Lean In by
Sheryl Sandberg. Each meeting will be a discussion session focusing on the author of the book, the book itself, and its
implications for classroom use. Each participant is expected to have read the book prior to the discussion session. Emphasis
will be placed on use and adaptation of the work to classroom/curriculum use. The chosen books are from highly regarded,
recommended reading lists and published recently. Participants are required to obtain the books on their own. Possible
sources: school and public libraries, bookstores for new and used books, e-books, and online marketplaces like Amazon.com.

What are hard conversations and why should we have them? If you are an instructional leader, teacher mentor, instructional
coach, or teacher leader chances are you have found yourself in the difficult situation of needing to have a hard conversation.
Did you feel unprepared, nervous, unequipped? Did you have the conversation, and if so did it achieve your desired results?
Having hard conversations is something that many of us have never been trained on, yet they are a critical component to
fostering professional growth and student success. In this highly engaging workshop on having hard conversations, participants
will reflect on the barriers to having hard conversations and explore techniques to overcome those barriers. They will be given
the tools necessary to help determine when a hard conversation is needed, and a framework for planning and implementing a
hard conversation. Collaborative conversations, hands-on activities, and opportunities for application of the techniques will
ensure that participants leave with a deeper understanding of the “what”, “why” and “how” of having a hard conversation, as
well as an increased comfort level and greater success with future hard conversations.

This class works for teachers of all subject areas, in the idea that cross-cutting concepts and inquiry are both requirements for
most, if not all, subjects. Science is everywhere, and it’s our job as educators to open our students’ eyes to this concept. This
two hour course explores effective ways to teach healthy eating habits, exercise, and body awareness. Participants will receive
complementary samples of lessons from the Nutrition, The Five Senses, and My Body sections of Seeing Science Everywhere.
The cost for this session is $20.00.

21st century learners. The purpose of this course is to model resources and have participants explore and create a file of
resources that can be used to support daily classroom curriculum and instruction, utilizing the resources already present in the
classroom.

Bergmann’s journey from lecturers to student-centered, flipped learning classrooms. Learn how
teachers can talk to every student in every class, every day, creating learner-centered, inquirydriven, problem-based classes. Learn how you can begin to transform your class or school by
asking one critical question: What is the best use of my face-to-face class time?
Aaron Sams has been an educator since 2000. He is co-author of the books Flip Your Classroom and Flipped
Learning. He has taught Chemistry and AP Chemistry in both Colorado and California. He was awarded the 2009

If the Teacher Center is Free, Why is there
a Fee for My Workshop?
When teachers call to enroll for workshops, we are often asked why certain
workshops have fees associated with them. Many of the workshops listed in our
brochure are not DTC workshops, but workshops offered by other State agencies,
parks or museums; the workshops offered by these groups often include make-andtake items or sample lesson plans for each teacher to take with them. As we all
know too well, most educational programs continue to have budget shortfalls and
this fee is one way for the agencies to offset the cost of their workshops.
Trips and guest speakers sponsored by the DTC require a $40 check to hold your place at the event.
These checks are held and returned to all teachers who participate in the event as scheduled, but if a registrant does not attend, and did not cancel in a timely manner prior to the event, the money will be deposited into a DTC account. The DTC Policy Board elected to implement this policy due to the increasing number
of no-shows at our large events. These events have a per person cost and we must use our registration roster to calculate this cost; when teachers do not come to these events as scheduled, it costs the DTC money
and reduces our ability to offer additional workshops in the future. The Policy Board’s goal with this policy
is two-fold: 1.) we hope to reduce the number of no-shows to the events and 2.) we want to recoup some of
the funds lost due to the no-shows. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
DTC Policy Board Representatives Needed
Brandywine and Delmar Districts Unrepresented
As required in our by-laws, the Delaware Teacher Center is overseen by a
Policy Board composed of one representative from each Delaware school
district, as well as the Charter School Network, Catholic Diocese of
Wilmington, DASA, DDOE, DSEA, and the State’s higher-education institutes. When a vacancy comes open on our Policy Board, the president of the district’s Teacher Association
is contacted and asked to appoint a new member so that we may maintain a full Board. This year, the Brandywine and Delmar Associations have been unable to find representatives for their districts. If you are a
teacher in the Brandywine or Delmar District and are interested in becoming a part of the Delaware Teacher Center Policy Board, please contact your Association president.
