2014 - What a Year!
Highlights of 2014
This year has been a roller-coaster ride of excitement at St Michael’s.
We’ve had record high attendance at seminars and our international
guest, Professor Lisa Miller, stoked the flames of conversation on
the subject of science and spirituality. Our music program brought
together some of the best musicians the world has to offer, as part of
our weekly Lunchtime Recitals and Sunday services. We connected
with dozens of like-minded organisations, celebrated St Michael’s
Day with style and launched our first ever wellbeing e-course.

Music at St Michael’s.
During 2014, the music at St Michael’s featured some
very special moments. As always, a stellar line up of high
ranking, professional musicians took part in our Sunday
Services.
A highlight of the year was without a doubt, the
St Michael’s Day service. The service began with Schuman’s
wonderous Konzertstück for 4 French Horns, led by
internationally acclaimed hornist, Evgeny Chebykin
with Amir Farid at the piano. During the service,
world famous soprano, Greta Bradman sang the aria
Casta Diva by Bellini from the opera Norma, which led
to a spontaneous standing ovation.
Also stars of the day, were the St Michael’s congregation,
lifting the roof off the church (metaphorically speaking)
during the hymns, led by the 148 year-old St Michael’s
Organ, and the St Michael’s Brass Ensemble.
The Thursday lunchtime organ recital series continued
to grow, with a weekly attendance greater than many
churches experience during their Sunday services.
Organists came to perform from as far afield as the Czech
Republic, Japan and Germany.
Another milestone was the release of a CD featuring the
St Michael’s organ played by Rhys Boak, accompanying
the trumpet player, Bruno Siketa. Already this recording
has received critical acclaim, including a ranking of
5 stars in the ABC Limelight Magazine to be published
early in 2015.

Dr Debra Campbell-Tunks
We are pleased to announce that our very own Programs
Manager and Director of the Centre for Wellbeing at
St Michael’s Dr Debra Campbell-Tunks has had an
article published in the December edition of the Journal of
Spirituality in Clinical Practice which is published by
The American Psychological Association.
The article is a case study of a change in relationship
dynamics, a lessening of anger and a translation of the
most important components of a client’s faith into her
life through brief therapy. After experiencing insight into
how she could more fully embody her valued spirituality,
the client made a meaningful change from a pattern
of dysfunction to greater closeness and support in her
relationship with her daughter, who suffers with a chronic
disorder.
Dr Campbell-Tunks will continue her research into
spiritual wellbeing in the New Year. Exploring future
directions for collaborative spirituality research.

Steven Koski’s Oregon Mingary.
In 2015 St Michael’s will be forging a partnership with the
First Presbyterian Church of Bend, Oregon, U.S.A in the
development of Mingary Bend: A Centre for Wellbeing.
The development and partnership with Mingary will help
carry the healing and restorative spirit that has touched
and transformed the lives of so many in Melbourne to
the people of Bend in Oregon.
Dr Steven Koski of the First Presbyterian Church of
Bend is delighted to be part of Dr Francis Macnab’s
spiritual and psychological revolution. Below is a
statement he sent about the new project:
St Michael’s Mingary sculpture.
“The door highlighting the significance of the dynamic
relationship between psychology and spirituality was
opened for me 26 years ago when I was invited to soak
in the insight, wisdom and vision of Dr Macnab, serving
as his assistant.
“My time at St Michael’s was not only personally
transformative but shaped the path of my ministry over
the next 26 years. The 10 years I spent as the Director of
Cairnmillar Adelaide was a rich and rewarding chapter of
my life and vocation.
“It is with a tremendous amount of excitement that a
partnership is being forged between St Michael’s and
First Presbyterian Church of Bend in the development of
Mingary Bend: A Centre for Wellbeing.
First Presbyterian Church’s Labyrinth under construction.
“First Presbyterian is a congregation of 800 that already
has a focus on wholeness and wellbeing with yoga,

“The development and partnership with Mingary will
help us carry the healing and restorative spirit that
has touched and transformed the lives of so many in
Melbourne to the people of Bend in Oregon.
“Just as St Michael’s changed the course of my journey
26 years ago, I can’t wait to see where the journey of this
new partnership will take us.”

Coracle of Mingary.
In times gone by, people living on the many small
islands of Scotland would carry food and comfort to their
neighbours using a small boat, called a coracle. A coracle
is a carrier of nurturing friendship.
As part of the development of Mingary, The Quiet Place at
St Michael’s, we are inviting people to become part of
the Coracle of Mingary: Helping spread the word about
this unique space which gives people a place to reflect,
remember, and be restored.
Anyone can become a member of the Coracle. All you
need to do is write a letter to people you know who
might receive some benefit from visiting Mingary, The
Quiet Place.
Sample letters will be available to download from the
St Michael’s website. Letters will also be available as part
of the meditation booklet that is being produced.

Counselling Service are ready for a well-earned break.
Over 2,100 people have attended Mingary Counselling
Service this year and we have been busy meeting the high

The four Provisional Psychologists who began their
internships at Mingary in January have all met the
requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia and
will complete their work with us this year.
Hopefully their final papers will be processed quickly
by the Board and they will find out soon that they are
Registered Psychologists.
The 2015 interns have been selected and they will commence orientation and training next week, with a view
to commencing their formal placements on January 12.

Ageing and Depression: Sense of Purpose,
Self-Efficacy, Values and Self-Esteem as
Protective Factors.
Julijana Chochovski, Assistant Director of the SAGE
program recently penned an intriguing study of ageing
and depression with the help of our SAGE attendees.
Below is a summary of that study.
By 2056 Australia’s population is projected to increase
to between 31 and 43 million people, with around 23%
to 25% being 65 years or older (Attorney-General’s
Department, 2010). Old age can present many
challenges; the most obvious and documented is the
decline in physical health.
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of a sense
of purpose, self-efficacy, sense of value and self-worth in
predicting symptoms of depression in older adults. It was
hypothesised that after 55 years of age, an increase in
meaning in life would be dependent on having a sense of
purpose, self-efficacy, sense of value, self-esteem and how
these factors affect self-reported symptoms of depression.
The participants were 114 Australian men and women
over 55 years of age who were recruited from an older
adult educational group, SAGE (Successful Ageing for
Growth and Enjoyment). The results showed that high
levels of self-reported depressive symptomology were
associated significantly with a lack of meaning in
participants’ lives. The results also showed that,
depressive symptomatology was also significantly
associated with lower levels of a sense of purpose,
self-efficacy, worth, and a sense of value.
These results provide strong evidence for an alternative
approach in the prevention and treatment of depression
in older adults by building meaning, sense of purpose,
self-efficacy, a sense of value and self-esteem.
Prevention programmes, such as SAGE may focus on
new opportunities and possibilities, such as, engaging in
passionate pursuits. When we have something important and enlivening to work towards, we will be more
engaged and fulfilled by life. Consider what a person
120 Collins St Melbourne 3000
Julijana Chochovski and Dr Francis Macnab.
is passionate about and begin developing goals to work
towards these pursuits. This may be volunteering within
a person’s local community or further afield, mentoring
others in areas of personal interest or from previous career
knowledge, or join a club or organisation.
Feeling a sense of purpose can ultimately increase
psychological well-being. If a person is struggling with a
sense of purpose, focusing on discovering a person’s values
and what they are passionate about, and enhance their
connection to something greater than themselves. Older
adults can use their mental and creative energies to serve
something larger than themselves.
In summary:
• Having a strong sense of purpose in life is the lead
motivator in experiencing fewer symptoms of depression.
• A sense of purpose helps a person to focus on achieving
goals, experiencing success and enjoying activities.
• Prevention programmes that encourage a person to
strengthen their sense of purpose will in turn have a
positive impact on a person’s self-efficacy, self-esteem,
feelings of self-acceptance and meaning in life.

St Michael’s Supports
The Big Tent.
Zen Gardens on
Collins Street.
The Big Tent is a special program run by the Cairnmillar
Institute researching the impact on young children
under six who have witnessed prolonged domestic
violence, sexual abuse, verbal and emotional abuse.
Focusing on the Kindergarten Field Officers Group
(KFOG), a professional development and support group,
this research is exploring how early intervention and
eduction can impact positively on children’s lives.
The rationale for the research project being; If we help
build one child’s self-worth, we set that child on a new
and better pathway into their future. By helping one
traumatised child in a kindergarten, we help their 30 or
so classmates; we help the staff; we help the parents. The
project explores how, without this help, these children
may grow into troubled and potentially disturbed and
violent adults.
Building new way of caring for thousands of traumatised
children in kindergartens across Melbourne, the state of
Victoria, and then out to the rest of Australia.

St Michael’s on
Social Media.
Each week St Michael’s is able to reach people across
Australia and the world via our social media pages.
Dr Francis Macnab’s Sunday services are uploaded to
YouTube and watched in over 100 countries.
Akira Takizawa’s harmonious garden design surrounds the
Church in a lush and spiritual atmosphere.
There is much philosophy behind the design of the
garden, with the themes of spirituality and connectedness
appearing prominently throughout the space.
Takizawa stated that he wanted to connect the garden
with the spiritual aspects of the Church and Mingary, The
Quiet Place. The garden brings the peace and harmony of
Mingary and the calm meditation of the Church into the
landscape and exterior. This becomes another place for
quiet reflection.
In an enclosed space like the Mingary Garden, a Zen
garden, with its small rock fountain, a person can
retreat from the noise of the world and reflect. ‘Inside and
out, there is a spirituality that can also be found in life.’
Recently, Simon Marshall has reinvigorated the gardens
by replanting a magnificent array of colourful plants.
We encourage you to experience the gardens when
you visit St Michael’s. Take a journey into the Mingary
Garden, along the stepping-stone path. Once enclosed
within the quiet space, sit and reflect in front of the stone
fountain.
On average St Michael’s reaches over 1,500 people per
week on Facebook, and followers of the page have more
than doubled in the past year.
In this digital age the messages of St Michael’s are able to
travel the globe. We look forward to increasing our global
congregation in 2015.

Bequest.
We mourn the passing of seventeen St Michael’s
Members and Associates during 2014.
Bonnie Bradley joined the Cairnmillar-St Michael’s
community back in the early 1970’s.
Having come through a difficult physical trauma, she
became increasingly involved in the pastoral care work
of St Michael’s.
Soon she was drawn to an adult learning program to
begin studies for the ministry.
She embraced this work with commitment and warmth
and after two parish appointments, became the chaplain
of Mayflower, where she exercised a widely acceptable
ministry.
At the end of her life, she generously remembered the
significant influences in her early professional life, and
left a bequest of $15,000 to St Michael’s.
This gift will be devoted to a cause that reflects Bonnie’s
