GROSSE POINTE MEMORIAL CHURCH
“A light by the lakeshore”
THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (U.S.A.)
January 26, 2015 | Worship 9 and 11 a.m.
Third Sunday after Epiphany
Order of Service for the Worship of God
Go placidly amidst the noise and haste and remember what peace there is in silence.
Gathering Around the Word
*Please rise in body or spirit.
Prelude – Prelude (In Form of a Minuet)
Charles Villiers Stanford
Welcome and Announcements
*Call to Worship
Leader: Created by God,
All:
we rejoice in a new day.
Leader: Redeemed by Jesus Christ,
All:
we rise to new life.
Leader: Called by the Holy Spirit,
All:
we worship God!
*Opening Hymn 281 – Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
Tune: Cwm Rhondda
*Prayer of Confession and Silent Confession
Our prayer of confession is followed by a time of silent confession. That
period of silence will end with the word, “Amen,” spoken by the liturgist.
All: God of grace, you call and we resist. Our world needs our
service and we give our selfishness. Your ministry needs
our participation, but we become possessive of our
time, talents, and treasure. Forgive us, O Lord, for
pretending you are speaking to someone else. Have
mercy on us for acting as though the call is a wrong
number. Enable us to answer you with enthusiasm.
*Assurance of Pardon
Leader: Hear the good news. Who is in a position to condemn us?
Only Christ Jesus, who died for us, who rose for us, who
reigns in power for us and who prays for us. Anyone who
is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; the
new has begun. In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: Thanks be to God.
*Response of Praise – Holy, Holy, Holy
Tune: Nicaea
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
*Passing of the Peace
Leader: Called by God to live at peace, we answer that calling
with one another. May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all.
All:
And also with you.
While the Passing of the Peace often involves a handshake, this is not a
requirement. However you or your nearby worshipers exchange the peace, please
do not be offended if someone prefers something other than a handshake.
Let the Children Come (children ages 3 – 2nd grade)
Children will depart for the “Young Children and Worship” worship centers
(room 200/215) after the children’s sermon. At 10 a.m., our Sunday school
teachers come to the worship centers and take the children up to the third
floor to their Sunday school classrooms.

Proclaiming
the
Word
Prayer for Illumination
All: Even when we say, “Yes,” O God, we aren’t always sure
what to do or how to do it. Send us your Spirit, that in
the reading and preaching of your Word we might learn
how you would have us serve. Amen.
Old Testament Reading – Jonah 3: 1-10
After each reading:
Leader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God!
Psalm – My Soul Is at Rest (Psalm 62)
Choir, then all:
Gospel Reading – Mark 1: 14-20
(O.T. p. 236)
Jacques Berthier
(N.T. p. 181)
Sermon – Caller ID
Peter Henry
Responding to the Word
*Hymn 418 – God, Bless Your Church With Strength!
Tune: Ich halte Treulich still
Ordination and Installation of Officers
Within the Presbyterian tradition, officers are ordained to office and
installed in their positions during public worship. The service for this
ordination and installation includes Paul’s famous reminder of the
“varieties of gifts but the same Spirit” from I Corinthians, as well as
constiutional questions mandated by the Book of Order of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.). Just as importantly, Presbyterians participate in an
ancient prayer practice, the “laying on of hands.” This is both a
physical reminder of the blessing of those who have served before our newest
officers, as well as part of seeking the power of the Holy Spirit for these
newest officers. Within the Presbyterian tradition, the laying on of hands
3
is limited to those who have been ordained previously as ruling elders or
teaching elders. The constitutional questions that the officers are
answering are located at the back of the bulletin. Please note that our
liturgy also includes questions of the congregation.
Opening Litany
Leader: There are varieties of gifts, but it is the same Spirit who
gives them.
All: There are different ways of serving God, but it is the
same Lord who is served.
Leader: God works through each person in a unique way, but it
is God’s purpose that is accomplished.
All: To each is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the
common good.
Leader: Together we are the body of Christ, and individually
members of it.
Questions of New Officers (see pg. 15)
Questions of the Congregation
Leader: Do we, the members of the church, accept these
members as deacons and elders, chosen by God through
the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of
Jesus Christ?
All:
We do.
Leader: Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their deci
sions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ
who alone is Head of the Church?
All:
We do.
Commissioning of New Council and Committee Members
Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the
power and the glory forever. Amen.
Offering and Anthem – Expectans Expectavi
This sanctuary of my soul,
Unwitting I keep bright and whole,
Unlatch’d and lit, if Thou should’st care

Charles Wood
To enter or to tarry there.
With parted lips and outstretch’d hands,
And list’ning ears Thy servant stands.
Call Thou early, call Thou late,
to Thy great service dedicate.
My soul, keep bright, and whole. (Charles Hamilton Sorely)
The Grosse Pointe Memorial Choir
*Presentation of the Offering
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
Tune: Old Hundredth
Taking the Word into the World
*Closing Hymn – You Walk Along Our Shoreline
Tune: Wie lieblich ist der Maien
*Benediction
*Choral Amen

Welcome to Grosse Pointe Memorial Church
About Worship at GPMC
We are a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and one of its growing congregations. As a multi-generational community of faith, we are
pleased to offer a host of ministries that respond to the varied interests
of our members and friends. We give thanks to God that you joined us
today and we pray you will receive a sense of God’s loving Spirit from
your time with us. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. Visitor packets are available at the Lakeshore
Drive and Reception Area entrances. To learn more about our active and
growing congregation, visit gpmchurch.org or take one of the booklets,
“Growing in Faith: Getting Involved at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.”
Please join us for conversation and fairly-traded organically shade grown
coffee down in Fellowship Hall.
6
Many of you have inquired about our next new member class. It is a two
part class, meeting today and February 1 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Free childcare is provided. If you would like to join GPMC at this time,
please contact either our class leader Tamara Gilbert (gilby21471@aol.
com) or administrative assistant Pam Radlick ([email protected]).
Children are always welcome in worship at Grosse Pointe Memorial
Church. An infant and toddler room (room 101) is available
during the services should you prefer to leave your child with our wonderful caregivers. Feel free to use the glider rocker located underneath the
side balcony at any time during the worship service with your child.
Worship kits for children to use during worship are in blue bags located
at each of the entrances and Listening Assisted Devices are available in the
sanctuary.
Please list your email address on the fellowship pad at the end of the pew
if you would like to receive our weekly email. For time–sensitive updates,
subscribe to our Twitter feed: GPMCNews.
Cassette tapes and CDs of our worship services are available the week
following the service. Please request copies at the reception desk. You may
also watch or listen to sermons at gpmchurch.org.
Looking to go green? Like your personal device? GPMC now has a mobile
site to bookmark on your iPad, Kindle, or any other handheld device.
Power it up when you get into the sanctuary, touch your icon, and then
call up a PDF of the bulletin. It’s that simple. The wireless network in the
Sanctuary is “gpmchurch” and the password is “bibles@gpmchurch.” The
address for the mobile page is gpmchurch.org/main/mobile/
Leading and Assisting in Worship: Peter Henry, Sarah Godbehere,
Carol Marks, liturgists; The Grosse Pointe Memorial Church Choir,
James Biery, organist and director.
The new deacons and ruling elders at GPMC begin their service soon. The
ruling elders serve a 3 year term on the Session, which in the Presbyterian
tradition is the governing board of the local congregation. The deacons
serve a 3 year term on the Board of Deacons, which is the pastoral arm
of church leadership in a Presbyterian congregation. We give thanks for
the following people who have answered the call to serve as officers at
GPMC: Elders: Ruth Azar, Beth Carpenter, Connie Dunlap, Barbara
Belfore, Tamara Gilbert, Brent Kelso, Peter Marks, Brian Moody. Deacons:
Mary Berg, Hiroko Dalman, Nancy Gandelot, Colleen Huntsman, Peter
Mueller, Alex Piku, Nick Rotondo, Chick Van Dusen, Sally Van Dusen,
Jay Vandewyngearde.
7
We are also commissioning members of our councils and committees,
who also serve a 3 year term. We are thankful for the following people
who are offering their time and talent in the ministries of the church:
Trustees: Mike Domzalski, James Graves, Carol Lytle, Anton Tewes.
Christian Education: Kelly Clark, Regina Gersch, Ken Kamman, Charles
Tompkins, Christina Turner. Communication: Jim Everett, Victoria Hill,
Ragan Roth. Parish Life: Nancy Anderson, Lynne Bacon, Phyllis Brewster,
Jim Moore. Personnel: Lynn Turner, Mark Wilamowski. Outreach:
Noah Bellovich, Anne Burke, Lee Miller, Mary Shephard, John Strader,
Bill Turner, Charles Wood. Stewardship: John Boris, Jim Grogan, Joe
Kaiser IV. Worship: Heather Klepp, Sylvia Sanders, Emerson Stidham.
Nominating: Nancy Burrows, Beth Frahm, Rob Musial.
Finally, we want to say thank you to everyone who is rotating off a council
or committee. While Presbyterian churches have pastors, ministry happens
because of all of our ministers - that is, our members.
The Chancel Flowers are a reflection of gifts to the Flower Fund and are given
in loving memory of my parents Russell G. and Catherine Candler and my
brother, Thomas E. Candler, by Mrs. James P. Williams and family.
Flowers for the sanctuary on Sunday mornings are provided by our
members in memory or in honor of a loved one. If you are interested in
providing flowers for a loved one, please contact Jan Arndt: 313.882.8587
or email: [email protected].
This morning’s music: The musical setting of the psalm comes from
the Taizé community in France. The Taizé community is an ecumenical
monastic order with over a hundred brothers from Protestant and Catholic
traditions, originating from about thirty countries. They are known for
their beautiful music which, with its elegant simplicity, can be sung by the
many pilgrims from around the world who visit Taizé.
John A. Dalles wrote the text of the hymn “God, Bless Your Church with
Strength” in 1984 for the 150th anniversary of First Presbyterian Church,
South Bend, Indiana, where he was associate pastor at the time. The Rev.
Dr. Dalles is currently pastor and head of staff at Wekiva Presbyterian
Church in Longwood, Florida. The music for the hymn comes from a
1736 collection of music edited by J. S. Bach. It is believed that Bach
himself composed this melody.
The words of the anthem are taken from a poem by Charles Hamilton
Sorley, written in May 1915, and published in a 1917 volume entitled A
Treasury of War Poetry. The title is a reference to the opening Latin words
of Psalm 40, which begins “I waited patiently for the Lord.” The poetry
was set to music in 1919 by the Irish composer Charles Wood.

story of Jesus through all four gospels. We will be comparing stories that
appear in all four texts, noting differences and similarities, and asking the
question, “Why are things different from one writer to the next?”
Adult Bible Study – If you’ve been considering joining a Bible study, this
is a good time to join the Adult Bible Study, which meets from 7:30 - 9

Women, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Constitutional Questions of Officers:
Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all and
Head of the Church, and through him believe in one God, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit?
Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the
Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the
Church universal, and God’s Word to you?
Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as
expressed in the confessions of our church as authentic and reliable expositions
of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and
led by those confessions as you lead the people of God?
Will you fulfill your office in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of
Scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions?
Will you be governed by our church’s polity, and will you abide by its discipline?
Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them,
subject to the ordering of God’s Word and Spirit?
Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your
neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world?
Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?
Will you seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and
love?
to deacons:
Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and directing
the people’s help to the friendless and those in need? In your ministry will you
try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?
to elders:
Will you be a faithful elder, watching over the people, providing for their
worship, nurture, and service? Will you share in government and discipline,
serving in governing bodies of the church, and in your ministry will you try to
show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?
