Message from Fr. Brad 1 8 2 5 5 W E S T C A P I T O L D R I V E

3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME • JANUARY 25, 2015
As members of St. Dominic Catholic Parish, we commit ourselves
“To Seek Christ, Know Christ, and Become Christ,
Each One for the Sake of All.”
18255 WEST CAPITOL DRIVE • BROOKFIELD, WI 53045
Message from Fr. Brad
For I handed on to you as of first
importance what I also received
~1 Cor 15:3a
This week, we celebrate Catholic
Schools Week and I am reminded of a
medieval scholastic axiom: nemo dat
quod non habet, no one can give what
he does not have. In St. Paul’s letter to
the Corinthians, we are encouraged to
hand on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as
St. Paul did, professing that Christ died
for our sins, was buried, rose on the
third day in accordance with the
scriptures, and appeared to the
Apostles. This is a story filled with
great hope and joy. This is what we
pass onto the children who attend our
Catholic school. This is what we pass
on to all of the children of our parish,
but we cannot pass it on unless we
possess the knowledge ourselves. As
we celebrate Catholic Schools Week,
we all are encouraged to learn more
about our Catholic Faith.
As a parish, we continue to educate
our children in the areas of math,
science, language arts, history, music,
and religion, doing so with the aim of
enabling the growth of productive
citizens and creating faithful members
of the Church. In our school
environment, children are brought
closer to God and their vision is clearer
as they become closer to Christ, the
Logos, and the true Light of the world.
The handing on of our faith is critical
for the future of the Church along with
our families, neighborhoods, larger
communities, country and world. Let
us entreat Our Lady, to help us respond
to the promptings of the Holy Spirit
and faithfully hand on what we have
received.

For All Our Safety...
Please help our campus be safe and secure for everyone. For security
purposes, at no time should any of our doors be propped open. Please set an
expectation that the doors will be monitored 15 minutes before and during the
start of a meeting. Someone should be assigned to let people in during these 15
minutes. During meetings the doors should be locked. We ask all parishioners
to participate in keeping our campus and its parishioners safe by being vigilant
and speaking with others if we see this practice being violated. Thank you.

Join Us For Book Club!
Our next Book Club Selection will be All the
Pope's Men: The Inside Story of How the Vatican
Really Thinks, by John L. Allen Jr.
All the Pope’s Men is a lucid, in-depth guide to the
sometimes puzzling, often incomprehensible inner
workings of the Vatican. It reveals how decisions are
made, how papal bureaucrats think, and how
careers in the Roman Curia are shaped. It debunks
the myths that have fed the distrust and suspicions
many English-speaking Catholics harbor about the
way the Vatican conducts its business, explains who
really wields the power, and offers entertaining
profiles of the personalities, historical and presentday, who have wielded that power for good and for
bad. A thoughtful analysis of the recent sexual abuse
crisis sheds light on how the Vatican perceives the Church in the United States.
Balanced, lively, and filled with Vatican history and lore, All The Pope’s Men
provides the general reader with an authoritative picture of the highly charged
relationship between the Vatican and the richest, most influential national
Catholic church in the world today.
Please join us on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Parish
Center, for a lively and insightful discussion about All The Pope’s Men by John L.
Allen, Jr. If you have any questions about the St. Dominic Book Club, please
email Nancy Jurss at [email protected].
Help the Babies of Hebron House!
At the beginning of each year, St. Dominic

diapers in larger sizes (including Pull-ups) and
baby wipes. Throughout January, we will be
collecting these items for homeless families trying
to get back on their feet. Laundry baskets for collection will be placed in the
narthexes until the end of January. Thanks for your help!

Stewardship Prayer
Ordinary Time?
What precisely is Ordinary Time? We usually define it by
what it’s not. It’s the season when there’s no other season
going on. To my way of thinking, Ordinary Time is the most
challenging season.
During Advent, there’s a lot to do to prepare for Christmas.
During Christmas, it’s simply expected that people will be full
of good cheer, promoting charity and peace on earth. Lent
has its own set of internal to-do’s: the prayer, fasting,
almsgiving, and repentance that prepare us for the celebration of Easter. And, of
course, the Triduum and Easter are the high-points of the entire year with lots of
preparation and celebration. In all these seasons, parishes have programs,
prayers, and activities to guide us through them.
Ordinary Time, generally speaking, leaves us to our own routines, and our
own discipline. It’s the time when we have to work to integrate our spirituality
with the everyday: work, school, vacation, the ebb and flow of our lives.
Fortunately, we have help and assistance with that task of integration. We have
something that provides the support and spiritual nourishment we need to get
through the everyday routine of life. That support is called Sunday. Sundays
should be part of the rhythm of life that keeps our spirituality rooted in real life.
If your life feels a little out of synch, driven by external events rather than by
your own priorities, maybe you should reexamine how you’re keeping the
Sabbath.

My church is composed of people
like me. I help
make it what it is.
It will be friendly,
if I am. Its pews
will be filled, if I
help to fill them.
It will do great
work, if I work.
It will make
generous gifts to
many causes, if I
am a generous
giver.
It will bring other people into its
worship and fellowship if I invite and
bring them. It will be a church of
loyalty and love, of fearlessness and
faith and a church with a noble spirit,
if I, who make it what it is, am filled
with these same things. Therefore,
with the help of God, I shall dedicate
myself to the task of being all things

Thank You From The St. Dominic Catholic School Community
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Dominic Catholic Parish,
On behalf of the entire school community, I wish to thank you for your
steadfast support of St. Dominic Catholic
School. Without your prayers and
stewardship, we would not be able to
retain and hire amazing faculty who are
so dedicated to bringing children into
relationship with God, while maintaining
the strong history of humble excellence
that exists here at St. Dominic. This is a
history that embraces the whole child
spiritually, academically, artistically and
athletically.
We wouldn't have this amazing facility to call home. We wouldn't be able to
worship as a community under the guidance of Fr. Dave, Fr. Brad, Deacon Larry,
Deacon Greg and Michael Thiel. We wouldn't be able to instructionally meet the
learning needs of all our students without the use of a wide collection of
resources from our textbooks to our iPads and laptops. We wouldn't have the
exceptional role models of what it means to live out lives of service to fellow
human beings if we weren't able to experience community as we are able to
every day. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week this week, please know that
you will all be in our prayers as we are so grateful to you and all that you have
provided for us.

January 2015
Dear Catholic School Parents:
Thank you for your faith in Catholic education! I love this time of year, when we
can celebrate the many blessings God brings to us each and every day. These blessings
include our Catholic schools, dedicated educators, a safe, Christ-centered environment
and the bright future students have because of the important investment you have decided
to make. By choosing Catholic education, you demonstrate how much you value the
integration of faith into every aspect of your child’s education.
National Catholic Schools Week is January 25 - 31, 2015 and the theme is
“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Catholic schools in
the Archdiocese of Milwaukee have an unwavering commitment to these three areas.
They are the best of both worlds: religious instruction and academic excellence. Students
clearly benefit from superior academics. The average student in the Archdiocese of
Milwaukee continues to exceed the national average on the Iowa Assessments at all grade
levels. Catholic elementary and secondary schools lay a solid foundation for continuing
education. More than 99% of students in Catholic schools graduate, and 94% go on to
college. Studies show that graduates of Catholic schools are reliable workers, good
citizens, and more likely to practice their faith.
During Catholic Schools Week, please take time to thank and honor the Catholic
school teachers and staff who strive for excellence, a safe environment and a wellrounded education for your child.
May God bless you and your school community as you embrace the gift of
Catholic education!
Faithfully in Christ,
Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki
Archbishop of Milwaukee

January 2015
Dear Friends in Christ:
National Catholic Schools Week is January 25 - 31, 2015. Schools across the
United States will be celebrating the theme: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith,
Knowledge and Service.” Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee have an
unwavering commitment to providing a safe environment that is filled with Christ’s
teachings, so we know exactly how important this celebration is.
Are you looking for an education permeated by your family’s faith, values and the
Gospel Message? How about an education that guarantees extensive and competitive
academics, a safe and nurturing environment, and a vision of excellence for your child’s
future? If you answered yes to these questions, then I highly recommend a Catholic
school for your child.
Catholic schools are the best of both worlds: religious instruction and academic
excellence. Students clearly benefit from superior academics. The average student in the
Archdiocese of Milwaukee continues to exceed the national average on the Iowa
Assessments at all grade levels. Catholic elementary and secondary schools lay a solid
foundation for continuing education. More than 99% of students in Catholic schools
graduate, and 94% go on to college. Studies show that graduates of Catholic schools are
reliable workers, good citizens and more likely to practice their faith.
Start the New Year by scheduling a tour at your local Catholic school and speak
with the faculty, staff and parents. I know you will witness what sets Catholic education
apart. You’ll leave with a better understanding of why it’s an education you can have
faith in.
May God bless and guide you along this important journey. Please know that your
investment in Catholic education for your child is one that will last a lifetime.
Faithfully in Christ,
Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki

A newsletter devoted to the Archdiocesan Synod
ASIC Launches Work of the Synod
Group of clergy, religious, lay faithful responsible for facilitating, monitoring Synod implementation process
Last month the
first meeting of
the Archdiocesan
Synod
Implementation
Commission
(ASIC) took place.
This group was
appointed by me and will be responsible
for facilitating and monitoring the
implementation of the Synod outcomes
throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
The group of 17 is comprised of
clergy, religious and lay faithful who have
distinguished themselves by their pastoral
prudence and by their professional
competence. They reflect the various
charisms and ministries of the People of
God, and I am confident that they will
successfully lead our local Church in the
fulfillment of the priorities that emerged
from the Synod.
The Commission will provide
oversight; evaluating the implementation
of the Synod priorities and holding us
all accountable for implementing the
priorities of the Synod. The work will
require many hands, but with your
support, the guidance of ASIC and by
the grace of God, this will be for us a new
Pentecost!
A brief profile about each member
of ASIC is available below and on pages
2 and 3. Additional information is also
posted on the archdiocesan website
at www.archmil.org/Synod2014.htm. I
encourage you to get to know them, first
through these biographies, and next,
by working side-by-side with them and
members of the pastoral office staff to
build a stronger, more faithful and faithfilled Church.
Please continue to pray that the Holy
Spirit, who guided the work of the
delegates and observers at the Synod,
will ignite a fire in all Catholics in the
Archdiocese of Milwaukee to become
better informed and more active in living
and sharing our Catholic faith.

¡Todopoderoso y eterno Dios,
te alabamos y te bendecimos
porque tú eres grande en verdad!
Concédenos, como lo hiciste
en el primer Pentecostés, que
las lenguas de fuego puedan
descender sobre nosotros y que
el viento de tu Espíritu Santo
entre firmemente en
nuestros corazones.
Amoroso Dios, te pedimos que,
nos hagas testigos efectivos y
santos de la muerte y resurrección
de tu Hijo, Jesucristo; aumentes
nuestra fe a través de la vida
sacramental de la Iglesia; Nos
des el valor para seguirte como
discípulos fieles.
Anímanos, Oh Dios, para que
podamos salir a proclamar tu
Evangelio y renovar la faz de la
tierra.
En esta Arquidiócesis de
Milwaukee, oramos humildemente
para la perseverancia y la fuerza
para seguir tu gran comisión; de
ir y hacer discípulos de todos los
pueblos, viviendo nuestra fe a
través de palabra y de obra.
Pidiendo la intercesión de San
Juan el Evangelista, patrón de la
arquidiócesis, y de María, Madre
de la Iglesia, ofrecemos esta
oración a través de Cristo nuestro
Señor. Amén.
