Marquette-Butler Series Full Of History Marquette owns a slim 16‐15 advantage in the all‐time series, which dates back to the 1922‐23 campaign. MU claimed the first‐ever meeting 18‐17 on Dec. 16, 1922, only to see the Bulldogs claim the next nine matchups. Marquette also collected a nine‐ game win streak between 1942 and 1990, with the last two contests during that run coming when both programs were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Following Marquette’s move to the Great Midwest Conference in 1991‐ 92, the two teams wouldn’t meet until Butler beat the Golden Eagles at the buzzer in the opening game of the 2012 Maui Invitational. MU would return the favor in the 2013 NCAA tournament, downing the Bulldogs 74‐72 in the closing seconds to earn a trip to the squad’s third‐straight Sweet 16 appear‐ ance. In the most recent matchup, a 69‐62 win on Feb. 4, 2014 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, MU rallied from a 10‐point second half deficit thanks to 17 points each from forward Jamil Wilson and guard Todd Mayo. The team’s latest outing against Seton Hall was a perfect illustration of Wilson’s impact in league play. In 31 minutes of action against the Pirates, he chipped in 10 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Wilson shot 4‐of‐6 from the floor and turned the ball over just twice. In league action, the Anchorage, Alaska native is contributing 6.1 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 54.1 percent (20‐of‐37) from the floor. The Golden Eagles assisted on 26 of their 28 made field goals against Seton Hall on Wednesday night, marking a season high in assisted baskets and continuing a season‐ long trend. Through games of Jan. 29, Marquette is ranked third in the BIG EAST Conference and 24th in the nation in assists per game (15.7). Against the Pirates, seven of the eight play‐ ers to see action had at least one assist and senior guard Derrick Wilson paced the team with eight helpers. Over the course of the first 20 games, the Golden Eagles are ranked fifth in the nation in the percentage (.654) of assists per made field goals. PARKING Parking is NOT available to home and visiting members of the media. There are several parking structures available within walking distance of the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Senior guard Matt Carlino, who entering the season was the only MU player to ever average double figures in points for a campaign (at BYU), has picked up his offensive pro‐ duction during league competition. The Phoenix, Arizona native is fourth in the league in scoring (18.3 ppg.) in BIG EAST outings and is also among the conference leaders in free throw percentage (2nd, .867), 3‐pointers made (1st, 3.5 3‐pt pg.), steals (4th, 1.9 spg.) and 3‐point field goal percentage (6th, .431) through games of Jan. 29. Carlino has reached double figures in scoring in each of the last nine outings and is ranked among the conference leaders in six different categories in BIG EAST play. Player interviews will not be conducted on gamedays until standard postgame procedures occur. Please contact Kuykendall if you wish to attend practice. MU practices are scheduled at various times on weekdays but are subject to change, so please contact communications in advance. Carlino Carrying Offense In League Play Cohen III Gaining Confidence, Earning Minutes Freshman forward Sandy Cohen III has encountered the standard ups‐and‐downs most freshmen run into during their respective debut campaigns, but is currently enjoy‐ ing an upswing. The Seymour, Wisconsin native has played 20‐or‐more minutes in three‐straight games, something he hasn’t done since the trio of games to open the 2014‐15 campaign. Since the Jan. 21 matchup with St. John’s, Cohen has played an average of 24.0 minutes per night and contributed 8.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest. He chipped in 11 points against Seton Hall on Wednesday night. Marquette’s Defense Continues To Force Turnovers Marquette’s variety of defensive approaches hasn’t slowed the squad’s ability to cre‐ ate turnovers via the steal. Through games of Jan. 29, the Golden Eagles rank second in the BIG EAST and 20th in the nation in steals per game (8.5). Those efforts have allowed the team to force 14.7 turnovers per game, also the second‐best mark in the league. MU currently features three players ranked among the league leaders in thefts. Matt Carlino (9th, 1.5 spg.), Juan Anderson (11th, 1.4 spg.) and Duane Wilson (13th, 1.3 spg.) have been the defensive leaders all season long. Marquette’s 8.1 steals per game in BIG EAST play is currently the top average in the conference. The 10 squads compiled an overall record of 93‐30 (.732) in non‐conference action, claiming six victories over nationally ranked opponents and multiple tourney titles. Through Jan. 29, the BIG EAST is ranked No. 2 according to RPIRatings.com and No. 3 overall in terms of non‐league strength of schedule. Seven of the teams are currently in the top‐50 of the RPI and the league’s overall strength of schedule is fourth in the nation. Carlino’s Late Trey Allows Marquette To Escape With Win Marquette edged Creighton 53‐52 on Jan. 14 thanks to a contested 3‐point basket by senior guard Matt Carlino with 11.2 seconds left in regulation. MU, which led by as many as 14 points in the first half, found itself trailing 52‐48 after a jumper by Creighton’s Will Artino. Carlino would bury a tough jumper with 51 seconds left to close the gap before playing the role of hero 40 seconds later. The Phoenix, Arizona native finished with a game‐high 19 points on 6‐of‐10 shooting from the field. He also chipped in three assists and two rebounds. Ellenson Makes Mark Away From Basketball While junior forward Wally Ellenson is redshirting in basketball this season after transferring from Minnesota, he is making his mark in the high jump with Marquette. Ellenson, a two‐time NCAA First Team All‐American high jumper, notched a program‐ best height of 7 feet, 1 inch in his second jump at the Wisconsin Open on Jan. 17. Ellenson continued to climb, eventually setting a program record with a mark of 7 feet, 5.75 inches. Ellenson's performance was the best of his career, shattering his previous personal best mark. The Rice Lake native's mark of 7 feet, 5.75 inches (2.28 meters) meets the qualifying standard for world outdoors and is currently the No. 3 mark in the world. Ellenson will return to action with the track & field squad Feb. 6‐7 at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. He has turned the ball over more than twice in a single game on just two occasions this year. Wilson concluded 2013‐14 ranked 19th in the nation and second in the BIG EAST in assist‐to‐turnover ratio (2.8) and fourth in assists per game (4.2). For his career (120 appearances), Wilson owns an assist‐to‐turnover ratio of 2.85, which translates into just one miscue every 22.9 minutes on the court. MU Adds Twin Walk-Ons To Limited Roster With just eight active scholarship players and nine total to utilize in practice (Wally Ellenson is redshirting after transferring from Minnesota), Marquette has added a pair of walk‐ons to assist with the limited numbers. Twin brothers Matthew and Michael Mache, Marquette students who have served as managers with the women’s basketball team for the past three seasons, were added to the active roster in January. The duo checks in at 6‐5, 215 pounds and each was an all‐ conference performer at Glenbard West High School in Illinois. Carlino netted a tournament record 38 points in the win over Georgia Tech (Nov. 27) and Wilson chipped in 30 points in the Nov. 30 victory against Tennessee. Carlino’s point total was the highest by a Marquette player since Steve Novak poured in 41 points against No. 2 UConn in 2005‐06 in the team’s first BIG EAST Conference out‐ ing. Wilson is the first freshman to score 30‐or‐more points since All‐America selection Dwyane Wade did it twice in 2001‐02 in his first season on campus. Wade scored 35 points against DePaul (Jan. 19, 2002) and 30 points versus Tennessee (Nov. 21, 2001). Since the 2001‐02, 10 different players have finished with 30‐or‐more points in a game on a total of 21 times. The list includes Carlino, Wilson, Wade, Novak, Vander Blue, Jimmy Butler, Wesley Matthews, Jerel McNeal, Ryan Amoroso and Travis Diener (seven times). Carlino’s Scoring Outburst Earns Him All-Tourney Honors Senior guard Matt Carlino’s scoring outburst in the win over Georgia Tech on Nov. 27 earned him a spot on the all‐tournament team at the 2014 Orlando Classic.
