President’s Message
An Opportunity To
Serve Your Community
“If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
If I am not for others, who am I for?
And if not now, when?”
– Rabbi Hillel
In a few short months (in May), we will be
holding our annual congregational meeting. I
am certain we will be bringing in the By-Laws
for some grammatical changes, and possibly
some other changes as well. We will also be
bringing forth a slate of new At-Large Board
and Executive Board members. I thought I
would describe the various board positions. I
am not sure at this time which ones will be
available, but I ask you to consider serving on
the Board of Directors.
CKI has twelve at-large board members, and an
Executive Committee. The Executive
Committee consists of President, Executive
Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Financial
Secretary, Immediate
Past-President, the
Vice-President of Education,
and the Vice
President/Sisterhood
Liaison.

e collected 117 bags of food (see
attached picture) for the MLK food drive,
which is one per CKI family. Woohoo!!!
W
Thank you so much to all our wonderful CKI
families who contributed food. I am continually
amazed by your generosity. Also thanks to the
Torah School parents for organizing the food,
and driving it over to the city’s collection site.
This really was a community effort that will
help feed a lot of local families.

From the Rabbi’s Study...
Something is growing at CKI. If
you look in the sanctuary
windows you can see paperwhites
popping up above the earth. We are getting
ready to celebrate Tu B’Shevat. Tu B’Shevat is the
New Year of the Trees. It celebrates the divine
spark which brings new life. Buds begin to
appear in Israel that will bring forth fragrant
blossoms. The fragrance turns us away from the
dark months of winter—notice, even here the
days are getting longer! The mystics teach us
that we inhale the blossoms deeply, for the
sweet fragrance of G-d’s creation and
redemption.
No surprise, then, that this is a blessing for these
blossoms, since in Judaism there is a blessing for
everything.“Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu,
Melech Ha’olam, shelo hasair b’olamo klum
ubara bo briyot tovot v’ilanot tovot, leihanot
bahem b’nai adam.”“Blessed are You, Lord our
G-d, Ruler of the Universe, whose world lacks
nothing, and who created in it good creations,
and good trees for the pleasure of all humanity.”
Things are growing at CKI. There are more
students in our religious school, more people
attending services, and more people visiting,
then filling out paperwork to join.
Part of what we do at CKI is we grow
people—spiritually, religiously, intellectually—
and we delight in that growth. Open the Ark for
the first time? There is a shehechianu for that.
Have an aliyah (being called up to the Torah for
the first time)? There is a shehechianu for that.
Lead a part of the service you have never led
How to reach the Rabbi:
I am in the office at least ten hours each week
for people to drop in to see me. Come sit and
have coffee with me. Mondays are my days off.
I am in the office Tuesday mornings from
10:00 AM-1:00 PM, Wednesday afternoons from
1:30-3:30 PM, and Thursday afternoons from
2:00-6:00 PM. Call first, just in case something
has come up. Can’t make any of those times?
Call and set another time. I’ll meet you almost
anywhere, anytime.
I am accessible by cell phone, 978-590-8268 or
by email, [email protected].
HaKol Information
HaKol is published monthly by Congregation Kneseth
Israel of Elgin, Illinois. It is sent by email or mailed to CKI
members via first class postage. Non-members who
would like to receive a printed copy may do so by forwarding a yearly donation of $18 (chai) to cover cost of
production and mailing. Make checks payable to

before? There is a shehechianu for that. Try
anything new. We will be happy to say
shehechianu, a prayer that praises G-d for
sustaining us and enabling us to reach this
moment.
There are lots of opportunities this month to
celebrate our growth. On SuperBowl Sunday,
February 1, you can try on tefilin, those leather
straps and boxes, as the Men’s Club participates
in the annual World Wide Wrap.
Java and Jews continues on February 3. Come
enjoy conversation and coffee. This month we
will talk about fair trade coffee and chocolate
and sustainable farming. How is this a Jewish
topic? The prohibition not to waste or
unnecessarily destroy anything of value (bal
tashchit - “you shalt not destroy”) is based on
concern for fruit-bearing trees, “When in your
war against a city you have to besiege it a long
time in order to capture it, you must not destroy
its trees, wielding the ax against them. You may
eat of them, but you must not cut them down.
Are trees of the field human to withdraw before
you under siege?” (Deut. 20:19-20) It would be
my vision that we only use fair trade coffee at
CKI.
Our 6th and 7th grade class will be leading
services on Friday night, February 6, at 7:00 PM,
at our monthly Family Service. Note the earlier
start time which is designed to accommodate
kids of all ages. This is a service you will not
want to miss. They sound great and each
student will teach us something about Israel’s
history as an introduction to each song.
Sunday, February 8 will be our next Judaism
Rocks. Our focus this month is on Tu B’Shevat
and Italy. There will be great craft project and a
kid-friendly Tu B’Shevat seder.
Tuesday, February 10 is a Sisterhood meeting
that will focus on love poetry. While we are on
love, Saturday, February 14, we will have a
chocolate Kiddush and look at some of the texts
from Jewish Women International’s Shabbat
L’Amour. Later that afternoon I will be at Gail
Borden Library for the 3rd annual “Long Red
Line, One Billion Rising.”

We celebrate growth in lots of ways. One way is
by marking birthdays. Come celebrate the
February birthdays on February 13 with special
blessings and special birthday cake, made by
our own Chef Nina. We are proud of Shane
Bonner and Joe Rosenfeld, nominated as our
FMJC Men of the Year because of their growing
leadership skills. Their accomplishments will be
celebrated on February 22.
One way to grow is to learn something new.
Read a Jewish Book. This month the Book
Group’s book will be Is Superman Jewish? Yes.
And so appropriate before we head into
celebrating Purim.
Growing our intellects will continue with some
new adult study offerings. Adult Hebrew on
Sundays mornings and a three week
mini-course on All Things Passover, including a
session on how to cook for Passover featuring
new recipes and some gluten free options.
Come be part of the growth! And yes, Spring is
coming.
Jews Around the World: Italy
In our house, we frequently make roast chicken
for Shabbat from a recipe from northern Italy.
When Simon lived in Ann Arbor, he consulted
for Olivetti, and was fortunate to live in Ivrea,
Piedmont, Italy, off and on for several years.
When we were first married, he shared the
beauty of this region with me—and of course
the food and the wine. Where do you think
Moscato comes from? Together, we enjoyed a
delightful, meaningful Shabbat in Turin where
we were first introduced to risotto.
The history of Jews of Italy goes all the way back
to Judah Maccabee who sent ambassadors to
Rome in 161 BCE. It was Rome that caused the
destruction of the Second Temple and the
expulsion of the Jews in 70 CE. We remember
Titus’ Arch picturing the spoils of war, including
the menorah. Life for the Jews in Italy was not
always positive. The word “ghetto” comes from
Italy, when the Jews were forced to live in
ghettos beginning in 1516 in Venice.
And yet, the Jews survived—in Italy and
worldwide. Tu B’Shevat comes as a testament to
that growth and renewal.
The custom of a Tu B’Shevat seder originated in
Safed, Israel, but spread quickly to places like
Italy. Italy had one of the first documented ones.
For Tu B’Shevat in Italy, Rabbi Barbara Aiello and
her congregation bring green plants to the
residents of a local retirement home to brighten
up the rooms.

President’s Message
Why I Am a Jew
(cont’d from page 1)
The general job description of the Board of
Directors is pretty standard. The Board
approves and monitors the budget, authorizes
emergency repairs, sets dues, employs the
Spiritual Leader, approves job descriptions as
well as authorizes the existence of paid
positions, and holds title to the building. The
Board shares the responsibility of maintaining
the By-Laws with the congregation.
The Executive Committee is authorized to act in
an emergency, handle highly confidential
personnel issues, and conduct evaluations on
paid staff.
The President enforces the By-Laws, presides at
all Board meetings, signs checks and banking
documents, appoints committee chairs, fills
empty Board positions, serves as an ex-officio
member of every committee, and appoints a
Parliamentarian. In addition, the President
would call a special meeting of the
congregation should twenty-five members in
good standing request a special meeting. The
President also provides day-to-day supervision
of the Spiritual Leader, the Office Assistant, the
Kitchen Assistant, and the Maintenance Person.
The Executive Vice-President also serves as a
liaison to all committees, and performs the
President’s duties in the President’s absence.
Unofficially, the Executive Vice-president is also
in training to be the next President.
The Secretary maintains a list of all members,
provides congregants with written notices of
meetings as required by the By-Laws, keeps a

The Treasurer oversees the collection and
deposits of all funds, signs checks and other
banking forms, compiles the monthly financial
statements and makes reports to the Board of
Directors, and Chairs the Finance Committee.
The Financial Secretary makes reasonable
efforts to collect unpaid obligations, serves on
the Finance Committee, and along with the
President works with potential and current
members on fee adjustments and payment
schedules.
The Vice-President of Education chairs the
Education Committee.
I have been very honored to serve the
synagogue in various capacities. If you have an
interest in a Board or Executive Committee
position, I will be happy to answer any
questions you may have, and to pass your
name to the Nominating Committee. This is a
very challenging and dynamic time in the
ongoing evolution of Judaism. Please consider
taking on a leadership role.

During the High Holidays, a number of our
congregants were asked to speak to the
congregation about why they are Jewish and
what it means to them. We thought you would
like to have the opportunity to reflect on what
was said in depth, or, if you were unable to attend
services, read some of these for the first time.
We hope to publish one each month for the next
few months.

February 22.
Why I Am a Jew
by Shane Bonner
To my fellow members of CKI. Since I am the
newest Bar-Mitzvah, Rabbi Klein included me in
being a part of why I like to be a Jew. I like
being a Jew because of the chicken soup. My
mom makes excellent matzo ball soup, passed
down from her grandmother and mother (my
great grandmother and my nannie). G-d willing
my sisters and I will pass down this same recipe
that has been passed down from one
generation to another. On holidays, I like
following our family traditions that my mom
learned from her parents and their parents.
The time I spend with my Zayde means a lot to
me. We have a bond through Judaism. He has
helped me with my Hebrew, taught me prayers
and taught me how to lead a Passover Seder.
Again, all things that were learned from
generations before him and now passed down
to me, just like I recently made my Bar-Mitzvah.
It is a good feeling to know how proud he is of
me and my sisters as he watches us follow
traditions especially when we sit next to him at
Shabbat services.
Rabbi Klein, thank you for giving me this honor
today.I hope that one day I will be blessed to
pass down traditions to the next family of
generations. Just as the Jewish people are the
chosen ones, I feel chosen to be able to follow
traditions and eat chicken soup! I wish all of
you and your families a very happy and healthy
new year! Lashana Tova!

Have you seen the beautiful embroidered tablecloths at CKI?
They are used for special occasions and are quite amazing! Through the many years our synagogue
has existed, hundreds of people have become members, raised their families there, got married, had
grandchildren—well, you get the picture. As a fundraiser, years ago, many of these congregants
purchased a napkin and added their names. This napkin was then embroidered by a group of
woman from CKI, and all the completed napkins were then sewn together to make long tablecloths.
We are in the process of sewing another CKI tablecloth and would love to include as many families
as possible. The cost of having your names embroidered is $18.00 per family, and any extra money
you would like to donate will go towards purchasing more napkins along with embroidery thread.
Please fill out the form below, and send it with your payment to:
CKI, 330 Division Street, Elgin, IL. 60120, Attention: Robin Seigle.
Note: Please make your check out to Congregation Kneseth Israel.
(Please do not abbreviate.)
The deadline is NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15. Once we
receive your payment, we will get you a napkin to “autograph” and return
to us.
Thanks in advance for your support. These cloths will be a wonderful way
to remember the past, and carry on the future of our CKI congregation!

CITY OF ELGIN
INDOOR CLIMBING WALL WAIVER AND RELEASE AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK
(Parent Form)
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The City of Elgin is committed to conducting its recreation programs and
activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard.
The City of Elgin continually strives to reduce such risk and insists that all
participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect
WKHSDUWLFLSDQWV¶VDIHW\+RZHYHUSDUWLFLSDQWVDQGSDUHQWVJXDUGLDQVRIPLQRUV
registering for this program must recognize that there is an inherent risk of
injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities.
You are solely responsible for determining if you or your Minor Child/ward are
physically fit and/or adequately skilled for the activities contemplated by this
agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant,
disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to
consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.
WARNING OF RISK
Climbing walls are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and
emotional resources of each participant. However, despite careful and proper
preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is
still a risk of serious injury. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can
be foreseen. The very nature of using climbing walls is hazardous and risky,
including, but not limited to, overexertion, slip and falls, loose and/or damaged
artificial holds, being fallen on by other users, belay and/or belayers failure,
lack of good physical conditioning, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate
instruction or supervision, poor technique, carelessness, horseplay, premises
defects, and all other risks inherent to the use of climbing walls. In this
regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for the City of Elgin to
guarantee absolute safety.
