These sources have their own water characteristics in terms of the physical, chemical and biological composition. It is but natural that treating these waters requires different treatment processes. Some processes work on the gravity while some are pressurized. Some work on the physical principles while some are chemical. The user has to make a choice of which is the best process suitable to meet his requirements. This course will discuss the principles of working of these processes and provide guidance on selecting between the competitive ones. Water Treatment for Power Plants: Steam Cycle Chemistry and Cooling Water Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-02 Date: 30 January 2015 / Schedule: 08.00-11.00 hrs Although effective chemical water treatment is essential in preventing corrosion, deposits, scales, and carryover, the efficient production and maintenance of highpurity water for feedwater makeup is at least as important an issue in power plants. For cooling systems, the key issues are water cleanliness, corrosion and deposit control, efficient heat-rejection, and, for recirculating cooling systems, maintaining cycles of concentration. This course considers at all these issues and discusses chemistries and control measures. Water Treatment for Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Plants Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-03 Date: 31 January 2015 / Schedule: 08.00-11.00 hrs Refineries and petrochemical plants convert feedstock continuously into a wide range of high-quality products, and profitability depends on keeping key process units running, controlling operating costs, and effectively meeting regulatory requirements. This course looks at some of the waterside and process issues faced on a daily basis, including the need for CDU/VDU overhead line corrosion protection, antifoulants, emulsion breakers, desalting operations, hydrogen sulfide control, as well as water treatment for HP/LP boilers, HRSG, and cooling systems. Waterside Problems in Boilers & Steam Generators, Closed Loops, & Cooling Systems Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-04 Date: 28 January 2015 / Schedule: 13.00-16.00 hrs This course covers the basics of scaling, corrosion, fouling, and microbiological problems (including hygiene and safety issues) in boilers and steam generators, closed loop systems, and cooling water systems, including once-through cooling and open recirculating cooling tower systems. It also discusses approaches to solving these problems, given that, in most cases, the waterside problems are interrelated and, if left unresolved, lead to a chain of cause and effect, a reduction in efficiency, higher operating costs, and sometimes system failure. Specialty Chemistries for Boiler/Cooling Water Treatment Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-05 Date: 30 January 2015 / Schedule: 15.00-18.00 hrs There are usually many ways to solve most industrial and commercial water treatment problems and most solutions require the use of pretreatment equipment such as filters, softeners, or RO. However, all problems eventually require the correct selection and application of chemistries, such as polymers, phosphonates, or inorganic inhibitors. Which ones do we choose? How do different brands compare with each other? Are the chemicals provided by the biggest names in the business better? Ion-Exchange Pure Water Processes Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-06 Date: 31 January 2015 / Schedule: 15.00-18.00 hrs Ion-exchange resins are synthetic polymers which, though insoluble, simulate or react much as acids, bases, and salts. Ion exchange is an adsorption phenomenon where the mechanism of adsorption is electrostatic. Electrostatic forces hold ions to charged functional groups on the surface of the ion exchange resin. The adsorbed ions replace ions that are on the resin surface on a 1:1 charge basis. This course discusses modern ion-exchange processes for the production of pure water, and includes the cross-over with membrane technologies. Principles of Corrosion, Including Causations & Troubleshooting Designing Energy Efficient Seawater RO Systems Instructor: Colin Frayne / Course Code: T-07 Date: 27 January 2015 / Schedule: 13.00-16.00 hrs Instructor: Satish Chilekar / Course Code: T-14 Date: 31 January 2015 / Schedule: 11.30-14.30 hrs Corrosion is a natural but controllable process that causes the deterioration of metals or their properties because of a reaction with its environment, and costs countries billions of dollars each year. This course covers the basics of electrochemical corrosion problems in water systems, including microbial induced corrosion. It discusses some of the common metallurgies employed in industrial and building heat transfer and similar mechanical systems, the influence of contaminants and corrosion-inducing ions and salts in water, and some preventative strategies. Sea Water RO (SWRO) plants also consume high energy as they operate at high pressures. Higher pressure means higher energy consumption. Energy recovery devices are commonly used in the SWRO plants to recover energy from the reject streams and thus reduce the specific energy consumption. But there are also other salient features and options that affect the energy consumed by the plant either positively or negatively. This program will discuss all these options that the plant designer and operator has to optimize specific energy consumption in SWRO plants.
