The East Side Hockey Foundation plans to renovate the venue, grow youth hockey in Detroit, and help revitalize the surrounding community. A ribbon-cutting celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the arena where the Foundation will disclose details about its $1.3 million capital campaign and unveil the new meeting room and pro shop. The Board of Directors, including Brian Francis, Paul Fayad, Anne Ugval, Matt Brady, Kier Mathieson, Greg Nehra, Sam Steinhebel, will host the event. Distinguished guests will include Detroit Red Wings alumnus Kirk Maltby, Honorable Mayor Ted Kedzierski, Village of Grosse Pointe Shores and Honorable Mayor James C. Farquhar, Jr., the City of Grosse Pointe Farms. “We are thrilled to formally announce the East Side Hockey Foundation,” says Brian Francis, president of the board of directors. “Hockey provides players important life skills that will assist them on and off the ice. We’ve been working with local neighborhoods to make hockey accessible and affordable for all children, regardless of the income level of the family, and we’re ready to take this effort to the next level.” To date, ESHF has provided equipment, subsidized ice-time, and has given scholarships to local families in need. The organization donated 200 sets of equipment to children ages 3-8 as part of its Learn to Play Hockey 8U program. ESHF reduced ice-time costs at the arena up to 72 percent during the 2014/15 season, which represented a savings of $95,000 for local families. The organization also hosts Try Hockey for Free days at the arena, which gives local kids the chance to step on the ice and experience the thrill of hockey at no cost. The next Try Hockey for Free day will be held at 11:30 a.m. February 21, 2015. “We are proud of our accomplishments to date and enthusiastic about the leadership gifts that have been provided to help launch the Foundation,” says Paul Fayad, secretary of the board of directors. “But we still need support for the capital campaign, which will enable us to realize our goals.” Part of the funds raised in the capital campaign will be used to renovate the facility starting this June. Phase one of the ESHF Ice Arena renovation is designed to improve and update the arena based on a professional assessment of the arena and its mechanics. Rosen Collection Now–February 15, 2015 Each of the works in Suspended Moments: Photographs from the David S. Rosen Collection offer insights into an interior world—featuring photographs of children at various stages, particularly those difficult years that chart the transition from childhood to adulthood. Most of the selected images are very closely related to the research interests of the collector, Dr. David S. Rosen, who was a physician on the staff of the University of Michigan Medical School, and a pediatrician with a specialization in adolescent medicine. The exhibition features the works of photographers known for their images of childhood, such as Sally Mann, Dawoud Bey, and Helen Levitt, and also includes photographs taken by Dr. Rosen himself. Other images on view examine the doctor’s vision as a collector, in works by noted landscape and still life photographers such as Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna, Howard Bond, and Billie Mercer. Suspended Moments features 26 of more than 150 photographic works that were added to UMMA’s collection through Dr. Rosen’s bequest in 2013. Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Health System. The earliest botanical garden at the University was a pharmaceutical garden established in 1897 just off the Diag, at the heart of Central Campus. The new garden, developed in partnership with the College of Pharmacy and Medical School faculty, will continue that legacy, aiming to explore the botanical origins of historical and current medicines, and to promote a better understanding of the profound relationship between plants and human health. Preceding the garden’s opening, this exhibition at UMMA will feature rarely seen archival plant specimens, deposited by pharmaceutical companies at the University Herbarium, along with newer herbarium specimens that reveal the captivating forms of these medicinal plants. These dried and pressed plant specimens will be accompanied by the presentation of the few remaining historic images of the original pharmaceutical garden, as well as a drawing of the layout of new garden at Matthaei, which is uniquely organized according to the systems of the human body that these medicinal plants are used to treat This exhibition is part of the U-M Collections Collaborations series, co-organized by and presented at UMMA and designed to showcase the renowned and diverse collections at the University of Michigan. The U-M Collections Collaborations series is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. www.olympiaentertainment.com FEBRUARY 4-8 Wed.-Sun. CT SPANK! Jewelry Stars Give Back is a charitable giving program that recognizes a glittering group of metro Detroiters and their favorite charitable organizations. The 2014 contest concluded Dec. 31, 2014. Known for their trendsetting fashion and jewelry choices and their outstanding community support, 12 local style icons and their charity of choice were featured in the holiday issue of Tapper’s Accent magazine, which was distributed to tens of thousands of homes and promoted citywide. The organization that collected the most votes at the conclusion of the program was Hospice Care of Michigan, which was selected by Jewelry Star Edward Eickhoff, Vice President of Development/Redevelopment, Ramco Gershenson, Inc. Eickhoff chose Hospice of Michigan (HOM) that, since 1980, has been providing seriously ill patients and their families love and support when needed most. “We asked each Jewelry Star to name a charity near and dear to his or her heart and were really touched to have a part in connecting these special people with their favorite organizations,” says Ann Duke, marketing director for Tapper’s. “Congratulations to Edward and Hospice Care of Michigan – everyone wins in this effort for their hard work raising additional awareness and funds for these organizations throughout the holiday season.” Tapper’s donated funds to each charity, but let the public decide which charity would receive the extra gift by voting for their favorite organization at Tapper’s stores, or online at www.tappers.com. The cumulative donation was $20,000. For more information on Hospice Care of Michigan, please visit www.hom.org or call 313-578-6265 for more information. The selections will survey the history of African American art through more than 50 works in various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and works on paper. The exhibition is divided into thematic areas that give a broad overview of the history of African American art, showing its diversity as well as its commonality. Section one, Gaining Access, spans from the 19th to the early 20th century, with artists such as Joshua Johnson and Henry Ossawa Tanner. Section two, New Self-Awareness, focuses on the early 20th century when many African American artists began to form their own artistic identity. In the third and fourth sections of the exhibition, Political and Social Expressions and Examining Identities, respectively, the works deal with overcoming injustices and gaining equality in the late 20th and into the 21st century. Section five, Towards Abstraction/Abstraction, highlights African American artists, such as Chakaia Booker, who will be a special guest at the FIA for the days leading up to the exhibition opening. The coming together of these Michigan collections will allow visitors to see works in a new context. With several artists in the exhibition being from Michigan, this exhibition encourages engagement with art and fosters a sense of community in diverse areas of the state. Growing up in Marshall County, Mississippi in the 1950s and 1960s, Walker witnessed life in an isolated, impoverished, and rural community. Following his graduation from college, he spent the summer of 1967 working in Marshall County as a teacher at Gatewood Baptist Church, whose pastor was the Reverend Louis Cole. One fall morning Walker attended a revival service at Gatewood and experienced a sermon unlike any he had heard before. He moved away shortly afterward, but the memory of that sermon stayed with him. Nearly a decade later, Walker began a six-year project to produce a photographic essay about Reverend Cole and his congregation. He spent countless hours with the preacher at church and at his home. In addition, Walker met with and photographed members of the congregation, with whom he became friends. This exhibition will also serve as a tribute to the artist who passed away earlier this year.
