We also ask some vital questions that have arisen over the past twenty years in the re-enactment industry. Questions such as: Were shields used as a trap for weapons or primarily for defence? How did shields differ between the cultures here in England through the ages? Where did the styles and techniques with two-handed swords and polearms come from in the 16th century? What were their origins? Using a variety of weapons from claymores, medieval bills, singlehand broadswords, twohanded spears, single- hand spears, shields, scramasaxes, hand axes, and dane axes we aim to bring history alive for the whole community via a variety of media including presentation dvds and photos, shows, websites and videos on YouTube. Anyone can join us, regardless of age or gender. We have lots of opportunities ranging from photographers, video camera work, research, constructing armour and clothing. Every year we give displays for the public to demonstrate the working knowledge we have acquired and to bring history alive. To be part of the combat research you must be 15 and above (from 15-17 you will need parental permission). So what are you waiting for? The possibilities are endless. Come and join us and participate in the resurrection of history. We meet every Saturday/ Sunday depending on members’ availability at our base in Burgh Castle. So, if you fancy learning how to use dark-age and medieval weaponry, or just do some research or construction, drop us a line. Help us to resurrect history through research. A couple of pictures of sports teams based at the Shrublands Y&A Centre ‘back in the day’. Anyone brave enough to say ‘That’s me!’? If so then please get in touch with Brian at the Shrublands Community Archive Group on 440932 who’d love to hear from you. The group meets on Friday mornings at Shrublands Y&A Centre. If you have any information, photos or memorabilia of the area that you think would be of use or would like to meet the group to pass on your experiences please contact them on the number given above. 22 FRIDAY Activities, Clubs & Societies Shrublands Community Archive Group Patchwork & Quilting Coffee Morning Seated Exercise Classes Shrublands Y&AC (Training Room) Shrublands Y&AC (Macey) Magdalen Methodist Church Shrublands Y&AC (Theatre) 1000 440932 1030 1030 1230 440932 728693 604739 Shrublands Y&AC (MESH office) 1000 856900 Wroughton School Seagulls Centre 0900 0930 667590 660090 Seagulls Centre 0930 660090/418140 Seagulls Centre 1130 660090 Seagulls Centre 1300 660090 Peterhouse School 1630 Shrublands Y&AC (Theatre) 1800 Cliff Park High (Gym) 1800 Shrublands Y&AC (Gym) 1800 St Mary Magdalene Church 1830 Burgh Castle Village Hall 1830 Church Lane Community Centre 1900 01603 748929 651608 664166 07842 826365 Support & Advice Money / Debt Advice (DIAL) Parents & Toddlers Playgroup Baby Bumble (0-7 months) (booking essential) Speech/language therapy drop-in (Last Fri of month) Breastfeeding workshop (First Friday of month) Baby Café (breastfeeding mums) Young People Drama Class Elysian Twirlers Crystalette Twirlers New Flame Majorettes Rock Solid (11-14 years) Adventure Cadets Chillax Youth Club (7+) SATURDAY 652761 07411 299744 Activities, Clubs & Societies Community Choir Chinto Karate Group St Mary Magdalene Church Magdalen Methodist Church 1000 1030 303185 07780 832484 Shrublands Y&AC (Theatre) 1300 01603 621702 Magdalen Methodist Church 1030 07780 832484 Support & Advice GY Family Contact Centre (fortnightly) Young People Chinto Karate Group 23
