Message from the President
The month of January 2015 roared in
like a lion. I’ve used my snow blower
more in the last three weeks than in
all of last winter. This kind of weather
can be problematic for us seniors as
we deal with snow, ice and wind
when driving, and when necessary,
walking. I know we’re all using good
judgment in these situations. On the bright side, each day
now has longer daylight and we’re only five months
away from our Annual Club Picnic. This year’s picnic is
being chaired by member David James. Let’s all support
David in his inaugural effort to carry on in the fine tradition of Jim Garofalo, who chaired this event for over ten
years. Soooo, c’mon - spring, lamb, baseball, Final
Four, golf and…lawn cutting!!!

HELP WANTED!
Captain Miller of the Glen Rock Police Department is
recruiting for paying positions as Substitute Crossing
Guards. There is no age limit, but there are job requirements that he will discuss. If you or someone you know
have sufficient cognitive and physical abilities to assure
children’s safety at street crossings and would like to
earn a few bucks from time to time, you might be interested in what Captain Miller has to say.
Cares and Concerns
Mario Pallotta has suffered a stroke and is now recovering at home. We wish Mario a speedy recovery. Bill
Koenecke’s adult daughter has succumbed to cancer.
Some Club members joined Bill and Maria for the funeral in Tom’s River where the deceased lived. We all
join the Koeneckes in their mourning.
If any adverse event affecting a Club member or immediate family comes to your attention, don't keep it to
yourself - let Rich Fitzgerald know about it. He's at 1973-339-9618 and [email protected].
Monthly General Meeting
On Tuesday February 17th the Activities Club will
convene its monthly meeting beginning at 1:00 PM at the
Community Church in Glen Rock. The meeting will
feature a presentation by Club member Steve Fowls on
the topic, “Life on wheels: Vacationing or Living in a
Motor Home.” He will discuss his personal adventures
rolling throughout the US and share some of his expert
photography documenting those experiences. Steve’s
exciting presentation will begin at 1:30 PM, preceded by
a koffee and kookies klatch and followed by a special
January was award time at the Club Monthly Meeting. At left,
Sue Tryforos, the Borough Historian, receives her Appreciation Award from 2nd V-P Walter Murphy for informing us
why Glen Rock was a nice town for Mickey Mantle, Bobby
Meachem and Chris Chambliss to come home to. On the right,
the Rev. Phyllis Palsma, pastor of the Club’s sponsor, the
Community Church of Glen Rock, receives a check for $500
from Club President Frank Gasper as a gift celebrating the
Club’s good financial year stemming from increased membership and avoided expenses.
Mae Fish will be at the February meeting with gift
cards for all the local food stores. This is a way for the
Activities Club to support the Community Church, and it
does not cost the Club or you one penny. Ask your significant other which store(s) are their favorite, and bring
a check or cash.
The Activities Club is sponsored by the Community Church of Glen Rock, Glen Rock, NJ 07452
This Is An Emergency!
If those dreaded words were spoken about someone
pursuing a Club activity in your presence, or even about
yourself, you would want the identity of someone who
should be contacted (besides 911) to be known immediately. To address this need, the Club is assembling an
emergency contact list. The list will be available to all
Club members, and Group leaders will be expected to
have it on hand should the emergency arise during a
Group activity (as recently happened during a Walking
Group activity). In addition, in the future each member’s emergency information will be stamped on the rear
of his membership card. To make these good and necessary intentions happen, every member needs to cooperate, as follows:

The Collini Case by Ferdinand Von Shirach is a
“why’d he do it?” which involves a shocking German
law and the hero, a newly-qualified lawyer. He faces
the tough prosecutor with not only a client who has
confessed his guilt, but also with a serious ethical
quandary that could endanger his career. This is a
quick read with much to discuss on February 23rd at
1:30 at the Community Church Drop-in Center.

The next meeting of the Science Group will feature
a DVD lecture on Quantum Mechanics entitled
“Uncertainty.” This is not about uncertainty resulting
from a shortage of knowledge that might be available
under improved conditions. It is about the absolute
limit on knowledge that can be obtained about the state
of subatomic particles under any conditions. This kind
of uncertainty leads to the insight that the most detailed knowledge we can have about nature is statistical in nature rather than determined by chains of mechanical cause-and-effect. And this means that anything can happen some of the time! For example, the
same particle can be in two different places at once!
(Continued on page 4)
(Science continued from page 3)
Uncertainty is one of the two pillars of quantum theory, the other being wave-particle duality; and we
will continue discussing these two crucial ideas until we understand them as well as anybody does,
which is somewhat less than completely. Help us
puzzle it out on Wednesday February 11th starting at
10:15 AM in the Drop-in Center of the Ed. Building
at the Glen Rock Community Church.
Trips & Tours

Trips and Tours offers an interesting Sunday afternoon adventure on February 15th for Club members. Bring a friend or family members! This is the
deal: View the matinee performance of the exciting
suspense drama, Wait Until Dark, at the Bickford
Theatre (housed in the Morris Museum). Afterward, we will move to Rod’s Steak and Seafood
Grill for an elegant three-course meal with many
choices for each course. An optional part of the adventure is to arrive at the theatre early enough to
view museum attractions such as a spectacular
model train exhibit, fantastic Lego models, as well
as the collection of mechanical musical instruments
and the permanent collections of art, costumes
and animals. Group price (minimum 10) for the
professional theatre production is $30, dinner is
only $25 and the museum is $3. We will carpool, so
please be at the parking lot of Community Church
at noon. Please call me at 201-444-2717 with questions or to say you want to go. IMPORTANT
NOTE: I WILL NOT ACQUIRE THE TICKETS
AHEAD SO NOBODY WILL BE FINANCIALLY
INCONVENIENCED.
Veterans Home meets monthly.

Volunteering
Howard Hanes: (201) 445-4603
Howard Hanes’ legions have been helping the
Friends of the Glen Rock Public Library set up their annual book sale. There are more tasks to be performed in
support of this project, which is crucial to financing the
library’s total-community-centered activities. So give
Howard a call and let him know you’re available to help
out.
We’re not the only seniors club in the area that volunteers to help the community. Rich Edelman chairs
the Habitat for Humanity Club within the Ridgewood Hobbyists, and he told Howard that he
wants to offer his assistance to anyone in the
Activities Club who would like to get involved.
His contact info and article on the subject is on
our website at
http://www.theactivitiesclub.org/habitat.html
