Dear Friends, Collection for week of Jan. 31/Feb. 1, 2015 Weekly Collection Weekly Income Needed $17,691 $16,500 $1,191 Weekly Over/(Under) ($4,121) YTD Over/(Under) Includes $3,144 E-Giving, 18% Participation Total Debt to Archdiocese: $2,333,061 Mortgage and past due assessments Operating expenses for the Parish are predominantly met with income from the Sunday offertory collections, as well as, tuition and other fundraising events. Our weekly collections have been running behind - approximately $4,000 (YTD) - our revised goal of $16,500/week. Over time this deficit will accumulate and hamper our ability to meet our expenses, as well as pay for the recent four major maintenance projects. The Parish Life Center (PLC) and Parish Offices are fully operational. All bills for construction and furnishings are paid. However, to facilitate timely completion of construction, we utilized Parish funds - which are being repaid. The case statement for the Parish Appeal planned $50,000 to ABVM School. We have deferred payment of that commitment until after PLC bills were paid. These obligations will be fulfilled by October 2015. Therefore, it is important that you continue your generous support of the Parish Appeal. To date, we have raised approximately $365,000 from donations of more than 700 parishioners such as you. We need to collect an additional $22,300 by December 2015 to fulfill our obligations for the scope of this Appeal. Thus, the Goal has been modified to reflect these needs. On more than one occasion, Pope Francis has commented that if Christians keep faithful to Matthew 5 and Matthew 25, then they are living the heart of the gospel. Matthew 5 is the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount (which continues through chapter 7). Matthew 25 is the parable of the Last Judgment where the Son of Man separates the goats from the sheep, based on how they have treated the hungry, thirsty, naked, and imprisoned. “For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…” We here at ABVM have just been offered a wonderful opportunity to live out Matthew 25 very concretely as a parish community. Let me explain: Although we don’t usually think of homelessness as an issue in this part of Chester County, recent statistics show that in Southern Chester County there are presently approximately 260-400 families who are homeless or living in transition. The causes for this vary: house fire, sudden loss of job or home, breakup of the family, etc. It is hard for these families to find shelter, and when they do, often it requires the family to split up, as shelters will only accept women and children up to the age of twelve, which means the fathers and sons over the age of twelve must seek separate shelter. Obviously this entire situation is traumatic for the family. FAMILY PROMISE of Southern Chester County is addressing this very real crisis. They are an affiliate of FAMILY PROMISE Network which is a non-denominational organization for families in transition. There are over 185 affiliates in 39 states. There are over 6000 congregations and 160,000 volunteers making up these networks. Presently, Family Promise is organizing a network in our area. The network will be made up of congregations who wish to help with families in transition. These congregations bring shelter, meals and support services to families without homes. How? Certain churches act as Host Congregations. They provide lodging, meals, and caring hospitality for families for one week at a time, 3-4 times a year. Some churches act as Support Congregations. These congregations may not have many members or sufficient space to be a Host Congregation. Still, they work with a nearby Host Congregation to assist them, by providing meals, services, and other support. A Day Center is provided for the homeless families as well. This is a location that the guests use from approximately 7:30am to 5pm, where the Family Promise Network Director, who is a professional social worker, provides case management services. There, guests pursue employment, tend pre-school children, shower, and do laundry. The Day Center provides guests with a mailing address and a base for housing and employment searches. Many guests are employed during the day while older children attend school. The Family Promise Network provides a van which transports guests to and from the Day Center (from whichever Host Congregation the families slept at the night before). Family Promise approached ABVM and other churches in the area to see about our interest in participating in such an initiative. I am happy to report that we were able to offer the old Convent on Evergreen Street as a Day Center. It is ideally located in the Southern Chester County area for this use. Family Promise will take care of renovating the space, setting it up for use and maintaining it. We will be “renting” the space to them for $1 a month. At the same time, Family Promise is looking for Host Congregations who would offer space to homeless families/families in transition for a week, 3 or 4 times throughout the year. There would be up to 14 people staying in the space. The job of the Host Congregation (with the help of supporting congregations) would be to offer hospitality, meals and sleeping space, as well as space to recreate and do homework. Our Parish Life Center is an ideal space and could easily be transformed into a host site 3-4 times a year. I have to admit that I am extremely excited about the possibility of doing this and Pastor Mike Schutz from the Church of the Nazarene has expressed an enthusiastic desire to partner with us as a Support Congregation. But, of course, the decision is not all mine. It is ours as a parish. So I invite you to think about this worthy project. Feel free to ask questions. Shortly a representative from Family Promise will be here to speak at Mass and after Mass to explain more and answer questions. I pray the Holy Spirit leads us in our discernment as to how we as a parish can best respond to this invitation to live Matthew 25! Peace and all good, For more details, please contact John Brennan, Secretary of Financial Affairs, at [email protected]. Fr. Murphy Page 2 - 229 Assumption B.V.M. Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time Scripture Reflection February 8, 2015 We can imagine that the appearance of this group of guests at her house caused Simon's mother-in-law some distress; in her illness, she had been unable to offer them the hospitality so important in that culture. But as soon as the fever disappeared, she regained the freedom to properly welcome her visitors. No longer sick, she was able to serve. And that was exactly what she wanted to do. Without hesitation, she began to use her restored health to care for others. And soon enough, her hospitality was extended to new levels because "the whole town was gathered at the door" to see Jesus in action. How do we use our health? Do we think of it as a gift from God to be put at the service of others? Or do we think of good health as simply our own right? Today's virtuous woman teaches us about a kind of physical generosity. Recognizing that her health had been given to her as a gift, she in turn offered her strength, her ability to stand and walk and work, as a gift to others. What a beautiful way to understand the human body. Instead of focusing on how our bodies can serve us, may we follow the example of this woman who was so quick to attend to the needs of her family, her friends, and her neighbors. Mark 1:29-39: What do you imagine the town of Capernaum was like after a night of Jesus healing and curing all ailing villagers? Job 7:1-4,6-7: How do you help those in your life who suffer from despair? 1 Corinthians 9:16-19,23-23: What motivates you to preach the good news of Jesus Christ? We request that your family attend one of the many convenient services offered by our parish that day. While in attendance, please pick up a “business card” from a table in the vestibule. You will need one card per child in attendance at CYFF. Write your child’s name on the cards (space will be provided). Your child(ren) should turn this card in the following class to their Catechist. The cards will be used to take attendance for the week of Ash Wednesday. No card means that your family has opted to use that week as one of the 6 yearly allowed absences. Sunday CYFF classes - this also applies to you. Bags will contain a copy of “Living the Mass”, a Lenten devotional, rice bowl and informational sheet on Lenten parish activities. Be sure to get one of the purple bags for your faith enrichment. Mass instructional book: Due to a gracious donation, the book “Living the Mass” by Father Domini Grassi and Joe Paprocki will be distributed to all interested parishioners the Sunday before Lent. Father Murphy used the book as a resource for the teaching Mass he led this past Fall. Lent Devotional booklets: Little Black Books for Lent and Living the Eucharist daily devotional booklets for Lent called from Exodus to Easter will be available in the vestibule. Feel free to utilize either resource on your Lenten Journey. The Catholic Lighthouse Media display will also have added resources and Lenten topics for a deeper Lenten experience. Rice Bowls: Please join the parish children in their Lenten sacrifices for the Rice bowl program. Rice bowls will be available starting Ash Wednesday. This year’s rice bowl donations will go towards stocking ponds with fish for poor families. Catholic Relief Services has sustainable agricultural programs designed to help lift families out of poverty in many nations. A stocked fish pond means that a highprotein dinner is just a catch away. Catholic Relief Services helps families stock ponds that feed their families—even when crops fail. Fish also provide another source of income for farmers and better nutrition for the entire community. A donation of $25-30 will help provide fish for a family’s pond. Children will bring home rice bowls the second week of February. Rice Bowl offerings will be collected the week of March 22. Are You a Mandated Reporter? As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environment, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. These policies reflect the Church’s commitment to always do more, as well as new Pennsylvania laws that went into effect on December 31, 2014. If you have direct contact with children, you may be a mandated reporter. Volunteers will be contacted by head ministers with updated information on how to properly report child abuse and asked to sign a new form acknowledging the updated training. More information about these important changes can also be found at www.childyouthprotection.org. Parents of 1-2 Year Olds Starting Sunday, February 15th, the parish will be offering a babysitting program for 1-2 year olds during the 10 am Mass in the Parish Life Center. The Avon Grove Ministerium, made up of ministers from all the Christian Churches in the Avon Grove area, is conducting its annual Prayer Project 155. This event takes place during Unity Week 2015—February 22-28. The idea is that all the churches unite in 155 hours of prayer for our churches, our local and community leaders and specific church requests. The churches do this by having individual members sign up to commit to an hour (or a few hours) of prayer for a total of 155 hours. This is a great way for ABVM to join with our brothers and sisters from other churches in a prayerful expression of solidarity and love.
