Cashing in your stock investment comes with a price tag in the form of capital gain tax. Many charitable minded taxpayers have discovered that they can reduce or even eliminate capital gain tax by using their appreciated investments to fund their charitable objectives. A well planned gift of stock may let you generate an income tax charitable deduction based on the full fair market value of the stock. Check with your investment counselor to see if this might work for you! We heard that as soon as Jesus healed Simon’s mother-in-law, she began to serve. And Jesus, who would rather rest himself, works every day and all hours for healing and preaching. What a contrast to what we heard in the first reading from Job, who complains of his life’s drudgery. Even though our life too at times may feel like drudgery, we are constantly challenged to stir ourselves to service for it is in this that life has true and lasting meaning. Next weekend we will kick-off our annual participation in the Catholic Charities Appeal. You should have already received a direct mailing from the archdiocese concerning this very important work of charity. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal: GIVING HOPE, continues to build on last year’s success and reaches out to all members of the archdiocese. Last year our parish goal was $65,364.00. Through your outstanding generosity we reached 91% of our 2014 goal with a total contribution of $59,580.00. Our goal for this year’s appeal will remain the same. Next weekend there will be a video presentation by Archbishop Chaput concerning the works of this Appeal. I invite you into Monsignor Marley Hall for coffee and donuts next Sunday and to hear the message of the archbishop. I am again grateful to Bill and Sheila Fehrman who work in chairing this important work of charity for our parish. Who will benefit from our sacrifices to this Appeal? Catholic Social Services who works to meet the material and emotional needs of the poorest and most vulnerable among us receives some of your contribution. Catholic Special Education benefits families and children with special needs in providing the necessary tools and education to assist in making this special group of our brothers and sisters productive and contributing members of the community at large. Many elderly priests who have given their lives in service to the faithful are cared for by this Appeal. The Appeal also assists Mission Parishes within the archdiocese to provide vital programs such as food banks, family assistance, health services and care for their elderly. The Office for Life and Family receives support for their work in pastoral guidance to those in need. Also, some funding is used to assist the immigrant population which comprises a significant portion of our Church in Philadelphia. As you can see, many of those most in need are given hope through your sacrificial giving. Please be as generous as your means allow to this most worthy cause. May Saint Robert Bellarmine, our patron and powerful intercessor, pray for us and guide our work on behalf of the most needy and vulnerable in our local church! They are a different take on “How was school today?” Mrs. Reid will be setting a date soon to have a Chat with the Counselor in February. Her topic will be “Sibling Rivalry”. JUST A THOUGHT: During the Confirmation retreat on Sunday, the student-candidates were charged with choosing one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and consciously seeking to use it daily. These gifts: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord were given to us all. I wonder what a difference would be made in the world if we all consciously tried to use one of these gifts in our daily words and actions? SJR CYO: The CYO board would like to thank everyone for coming out last Saturday night and supporting our fundraiser at the annual Super Bowl party. We also would like to thank the many volunteers that gave up time from their busy schedule to help with setup, cooking, serving, and clean up. Mark your calendars for next years party on Saturday, February 6, 2016. February 8, 2015 6 122 FOCUS ON FAITH FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Mark 1:29-39; Job 7: 1-4,6-7; 1 Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23 Today we continue to read from Mark's Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon's mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark's Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present. On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark's Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus' disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disciples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places. In today's Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer Jesus' daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives. The title of the report is: "The Date Night Opportunity." Bradford Wilcox & Jeffrey Dew, authors, write that "Date Night" programs are likely to strengthen the husband wife relationship in at least five ways: 1. Communication - going on a date with one's spouse can "foster much needed communication, mutual understanding and a sense of communion between the spouses." 2. Novelty - most couples after a few years of marriage experience a decline in the quality of their relationship because their life becomes routine and spouses take each other for granted. Date nights can break the monotony of daily life through activities that are new.. 3. Eros - Going on a date gives the spouses and opportunity to focus their attention on the relationship, share feelings, engage in romantic activities, and try new things. This can help spouses rekindle the romantic spark. 4. Commitment - Spouses that are making time to go on a date regularly solidify their commitment to each other. The one-on-one time together fosters a sense of togetherness & signals to one another & to friends & family that they take their relationship seriously. 5. De-Stress - Stress related to work, finances, parenthood, or illness can prove corrosive to the marital relationship because it causes spouses to become irritable with each other or withdrawn. Going on a date can relieve some of the stress by allowing spouses to enjoy time with one another away from the pressing concerns of day-to-day life. For more information go to www.happy-together.net 122 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawnand go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Please pray for the poor and suffering, knowing that you are bringing the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.
