During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faithfulness, and enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs. When you tithe you enable those whom God has called to serve as pastors, ministry personnel, band parish leadership to faithfully build up the church accomplishing the works of Christ in our parish! St. Valentine’s Day is a day that usually brings a smile or two, doesn’t it? Especially if we receive a little red heartshaped card with a silly saying and a box of chocolates. If you think about it, this weekend is celebrating more than love; it is celebrating GIVING—the art of finding, like St. Valentine, little ways, loving ways, and okay, sometimes expensive ways—to show someone we care. Giving, we discover, can be fun, and fulfilling! So this is a great time to ponder the art of giving, not just cards or candy, but time, paying attention to our relationships, our families, and friends, to those in need we know, and those we don’t. Why do we give? Because Christ did. He gave his time and his love to everyone. In the Sermon on the Mount, he said, “Give, and it will be given to you” (Lk 6:38). So as his followers, we try to mirror him who gave us his all. Giving is something to think about during Lent. Pondering what Christ did for us moves us to wonder what we can offer to him to show how much we care. “The world asks, ‘What does a man own?’ Christ asks, ‘How does he use it?’ ” Andrew Murray (1828-1917) South African Evangelist and writer Stop back for coffee, bagels, egg rolls, & donuts! In addition to the bagels, eggrolls, and donuts we also sell healthy alternatives. Your purchase helps support the funding of scholarships for students in grades 7 through 12. We look forward to seeing you in Meeting Rooms C & D after the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses or before the 12 p.m. Mass on Sundays. FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 201 The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, March 5, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. How can we enter this mystery of giving? Maybe we choose to fast on another day besides Friday to help us feel the great thirst Christ had for us on the cross, the hunger he still has to share his very life with us. We can fast from watching TV to spend more time in prayer. We could choose to feast—on the Word of God by reading scripture every day, on “our daily bread” by going to Mass during the week too, on his grace by going to confession. And we can find ways to share what we have with others. For it is in giving, St. Francis says, that we receive. When I’m up at the altar during Mass, I look around and am touched to see many giving people. The very place we sit in to be with Christ and receive him in the Eucharist is our beautiful parish home, built and cared for by the givings of so many over the past 50 years. Here we not only share Christ’s life, we share our own—our ups and downs, our best times and our sad times, because Christ made us family, and “love is our mission.” As it says in our parish mission statement, “we strongly desire to be united as a Christian family....As a Spiritfilled Catholic community, we commit ourselves to use our individual talents and gifts to reach out to one another in love and friendship.” Giving is not only what we do; it’s who we are. Over the coming weeks of Lent, let’s ponder together how we do this now, and how we could do it even better. Deacon Todd Page 3 - 0146 Worship Commission The 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 14 and 15, 2015 First Reading WEEKEND: Leviticus 13: 1 - 2, 44 - 46 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “If someone has on his skin a scab or pustule or blotch which appears to be the sore of leprosy, he shall be brought to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests among his descendants. If the man is leprous and unclean, the priest shall declare him unclean by reason of the sore on his head. The one who bears the sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare, and shall muffle his beard; he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall declare himself unclean, since he is in fact unclean. He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” Second Reading 1Corinthians 10: 31-11:1 Brothers and sisters: Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. This is really cool! Do you know what your mom’s favorite meal is? Favorite TV show? Husbands – what is your wife’s favorite color? How well do you know your family? With the WMOF coming in September, the planners have put together a wonderful book – Love is our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. There are 10 family themes laid out, all of which will be covered at the World Meeting. So please come to our Friday 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross during Lent (bulletin has dates) and bring a soup (no meat) or salad to share afterwards. Our first theme (February 20th) from the Love is our Mission book is entitled, “Creating the Future,” and we will jump high, deep, and wide into some fun brainstorming about FAMILY. For instance, have you ever considered the fact that your family represents a “domestic church?” What does this mean? Look forward to seeing you there – come one, come all.
