Csillan # 572 2-15-2015/ pub./ P. 2 Dear parishioners, A couple weeks ago, after Winter Storm Juno, I heard or read about the “Snow Plow Sal” page on Hamilton Township’s website. It informs residents of the anticipated schedule of plowing of local streets in our forty-square-mile municipality. In addition, the webpage notes that firefighters encourage residents to clear snow away from fire hydrants, if possible, with a three-foot perimeter on each side of the hydrant, so that firefighters will have access to the side caps (in case of a fire). As I have noted before, Hamilton is the ninth largest municipality (of 565) in New Jersey (by population), with 88,464 people (2010 census). (Hamilton has four Catholic parishes, because around forty percent of the people in Central Jersey are Catholic.) Three other municipalities in our diocese are among the ten largest in our state: Lakewood (#7; 92,843 popu.), Toms River (#8; 91,239), and Trenton (#10; 84,913). The six largest are Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, and Woodbridge. This Tuesday is Mardi Gras (French for “Fat Tuesday”). The next day -- Ash Wednesday – is the start of the liturgical season of Lent. On page 4 is a letter from our diocesan bishop, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., concerning the regulations that we Catholics follow during the forty days of Lent. One of our Catholic customs is to give up something for Lent. Another Catholic custom during Lent is to attend daily Mass. As you know, our parish has two daily Masses, including an evening one at 7:00 p.m. Many Catholics also go to confession during Lent. (A “practicing Catholic” is one who “frequents” the sacraments by going to Mass every Sunday and holy day of obligation and to confession at least once a year.) We are one of the very few parishes that have confessions on each of the seven days of the week -- including weeknights after the 7:00 p.m. Mass. (Exceptions are listed each week, on page 4. On Fridays during Lent, confessions do not begin until the Stations of the Cross are completed, i.e., around 8:15 p.m.) For the daily-Mass times in other parishes, you can go to MassTimes.org or CatholicDirectory.com. When you enter a ZIP code or city, you will be given a list of several churches within a certain radius, along with each church’s Mass schedule, location, etc. (You will need to wait several seconds, while the website search is being completed.) This is also a good planning tool for when you are preparing for a vacation or business trip or need to find a Mass at a different time, in a neighboring parish. MassTimes.org has an iPhone app: Mass Times for Travel. Inserted in this bulletin is a two-sided flyer that lists the parishes that are participating in the third annual Station Churches of Mercer County and the dates on which they are hosting an evening Mass. There is an error in the list: Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish will be hosting on Thursday, February 26 (not Wed., Feb. 25). Also inserted in this bulletin is a flyer for the eighteenth annual conference of the Catholic Men for Jesus Christ in our diocese, which this year will be in St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton, on Saturday, February 28, from 9:00 to 3:00. It is a wonderful day for Catholic men and Catholic teenage boys (eighth grade and older). Today our diocese begins its sixteenth Annual Catholic Appeal {which began in 2000, as the “Bishop’s Annual Appeal,” and was re-named in 2014). The money raised in the appeal supports the pastoral activities of the Church of Trenton, which is one of more than 3,000 local Churches that comprise the universal Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. The first appeal’s goal was $6 million. In 2011, it was increased to $8 million. This year, the goal is $7 million. I am making a personal pledge of $300 for this year’s appeal and ask that you please consider joining me in making a pledge, in whatever amount you can afford, even if it’s only five or ten dollars. Your participation will show Bishop O’Connell – the chief shepherd of the Church of Trenton -- that you support his efforts to minister to the various needs of the people in the four counties of our diocese. If we make the goal given to our parish ($90,000), we would receive a rebate of fifteen percent, i.e., $13,500 (plus fifty percent of each dollar raised above goal). Checks should be payable to “Annual Catholic Appeal” (Diocese of Trenton). After placing your completed pledge card in an envelope (marked “Annual Catholic Appeal”), you may put the envelope in the collection basket or in the mail slot to the right of the front door of the rectory. Thank you to each of you who made a donation last year. This past week, you should have received a thank-you letter and 2015 pledge card in the mail (as did I). Saint Mary of the Assumption, patroness of the Church of Trenton, pray for the faithful of our diocese, especially those who are in need. God bless you. Fr. Chang Fr. Chang # 572 2-15-2015/ pub./ P. 3 CONFESSIONS: The will be no confessions on Tuesday, February 17 (Mardi Gras celebration) and Wednesday, February 18 (Ash Wednesday). Please also note that confessions during Fridays of Lent will start at approximately 8:15 pm, i.e, after the completion of the Stations of the Cross. MARDI GRAS On Tuesday, February 17, the Christmas Carol Festival committee will be hosting a Mardi Gras celebration. It will immediately follow the 7:00 pm Mass, in the All Purpose Room beneath St. Raphael Church. Come and enjoy various desserts, music, and dancing before the start of the Lenten season. From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy Communion is being distributed under only one species (the Sacred Host) instead of both species (the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood), because of the flu season. Under the principle of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, whole and entire—under either species. Thus, we do not have to receive both species at Communion. NEW LOCATION for CHRISM MASS The Chrism Mass (during Holy Week) will not be in the cathedral this year (possibly for the first time ever, since the dedication of the new St. Mary’s Cathedral on March 14, 1959--three years to and after the old cathedral was destroyed by fire). Instead, the Chrism Mass will be celebrated this year in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Freehold, on Monday, March 30, at 7:30 pm. The pastor of St. Robert is the Reverend Monsignor Sam A. Sirianni, who served as the tenth pastor of then-Holy Angels Parish (from November 1994 to January 15, 2004) and is also director of the diocesan Office of Worship. On Lenten Fridays, confessions start at approximately 8:15 pm (after the Stations of the Cross). There will not be confessions on the following day(s) in February and March: x Tues., Feb. 17 (Mardi Gras) x Wed., Feb. 18 (Ash Wednesday) x Wed., Mar. 4 (Liturgy Committee meeting) x Wed., Mar. 11 (Mercer County “station churches”) x Tues., Mar. 31 (Tenebrae prayer service) Confessions: In general, weekday confessions are usually heard after the 7:00 p.m. Mass, EXCEPT on: x The first Wednesday (Liturgy Committee meeting) x The third Friday (healing Mass) (Sept. - June, except Lent) x Holy days of obligation x The vigil Mass for holy days of obligation x Parish solemnities (May 8, Sept. 29, Oct. 2, Dec. 9) x Ash Wednesday and the Triduum x Sacrament of Confirmation (in the spring; May 19, 2015) x Priests convocation x Major civil holidays (e.g., Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving) x and as otherwise noted from time to time. Bishop O’Connell Issues Instructions for Lent, 2015 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics this Lent: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat). Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are asked to abstain (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though they are made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential day at all, or a substantial number of days, which must be considered serious. The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year -- often called “Easter Duty” -- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22, to Trinity Sunday, May 31. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause. I want to encourage Catholics to get to confession and to make use of the sacrifices and tradition that have always been part of our Lenten practices in the Church. May this Lent be a time of penance, grace and joy for us all. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton PROMISE TO PROTECT ~ PLEDGE TO HEAL The Diocese of Trenton is committed to the initiatives outlined in the U.S. Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and to its own policies and guidelines in regard to the reporting and investigation of sexual abuse allegations involving minors. FEBRUARY OFFERINGS from FRANCIS HOUSE of PRAYER LENTEN COMPANION ~ SAYINGS of LIGHT and LOVE Thursday, February 19 ~ 9:30 am -1:00 pm St. John of the Cross has written some pithy spiritual nosegays, called maxims, that cut to the heart of our call to conversion and union with God. I can’t think of a better Lenten companion that John, or a better Lenten Practice than to spend a little time each day pondering and praying over his “Sayings of Light and Love.” You will have a very special Lent if you are able to come. Donation: $25, lunch and materials included. HEALTHY EATING as a LENTEN PRACTICE Friday, February 20 ~ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm Sometimes the greatest asceticism is choosing to be kind, not only to others, but to our own bodies. This retreat morning will afford time and space for input, prayer and sharing on just what that means and how healthy eating can bring us to an inner peace and readiness to pray during this Lenten Season. Jesus tells us to fast and pray. Could healthy eating be a form of fasting for you? Donation: $20, lunch included. He has caught the imagination and interest of both Catholics and the world community. Our parish community is hosting this special retreat, led by Fr. Anthony Ciorra (via DVD), which will be divided into three parts, each on a Saturday morning. Each morning we will cover two different topics and allow time for prayer, scripture and reflection. The dates are Saturday, February 21, Saturday, March 7, and Saturday, March 21, from 8:45 am to 11:30 am, in the All Purpose Room below St. Raphael Church. (The APR is handicapped-accessible.) MASS DURING SNOWSTORMS Our parish does not cancel Mass during a snow storm, because the priests’ residence (in the rectory, along with the parish office) is near the church and a priest is able to walk through the snow to the church. Most parishes follow the same policy. Some parishes do cancel Mass due to snow or ice, but usually the priest’s residence in those parishes is in a separate building that is not near the church (and therefore it might be dangerous for the priest to attempt to drive to church). For the same reason, it is not a sin if you miss Mass (on Sunday or holy day of obligation) when it is too dangerous to drive (e.g., snow or ice) - or when you are sick (in which case your fellow parishioners would prefer that you stay home, so as to not share your germs…). IS GOD CALLING YOU? Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment meeting on Sunday, February 22, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at St. James Parish, Pennington. Join Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Walsh, as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and conclude with conversation and a meal. Please register with Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office at [email protected] or by calling 609-4067449. Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His invitation. ALTAR SERVER MINISTRY The Altar Server Ministry is recruiting new altar servers (3rd grade to 12th grade). For information, please contact Fr. Gene, in the parish office (rectory), at 609-585-7049, ext. 101. USHERS NEEDED Our parish is in need of two permanent ushers for the 9:30 am Sunday Mass in St. Raphael Church. Please consider this important ministry to our parish. If you can help, please see the lead usher at the 9:30 am Mass, James Panacek, on Sunday. INTENTIONS of POPE FRANCIS for February Universal: That prisoners, especially the young, may be able to rebuild their lives with dignity. For Evangelization: That married people who are separated may find welcome and support in the Christian community. # 572 2-15-2015/ pub./ P. 5 SCHEDULE for ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18 For the schedule of Ash Wednesday liturgies, please see the weekly Mass schedule on page 2. All liturgies include distribution of ashes. HEALING MASS The monthly healing Mass is not celebrated during Lent, because we have the Stations of the Cross at 7:45 pm on Lenten Fridays. The monthly healing Mass (SeptemberJune) will resume in April. HOLY NAME SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Holy Name Society will be held on Wednesday, March 11, after the 7:00 pm Mass, in the parish center. There will be light refreshments afterward. They are the first to proclaim the faith to their children. They are responsible for nurturing the vocation of each child, showing by example how to live the married life, and taking special care if a child might be called to priesthood or consecrated life.” ”Excerpt from the U.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter entitled Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan. Fourth-grade students learning about the great State of New Jersey The Saint Raphael School fourth grade is spending this year learning all they can about the great State of New Jersey. We have begun by studying the geography of our state. Recently, we learned that New Jersey has 21 counties. The Saint Raphael School technology program allows us to put a classroom worth of iPads to good use. Using the iPads, we were able to identify New Jersey’s 21 counties, and the county seat of each. We had a great time helping our classmates in the spirit of cooperative learning. This was an awesome way to learn geography in a 21st-century learning environment! # 572 2-15-2015/ pub./ P. 7 FAMILY ROSARY NIGHT FOOD PANTRY Cold weather is still with us and our home heaters are constantly running and our food closets are bare until we can get some help from a food pantry. This is a statement that is continually heard in many households in need. That is why we are here at St. Raphael-Holy Angels food pantry to alleviate some of the hunger of many of our clients. Even in inclement weather, many come to procure a few bags that we distribute to them. If they were not in need, they would not venture out in horrible weather. However, many of our shelves are bare and waiting to be restocked by the donations of our wonderful St. Raphael-Holy Angels parishioners. So don’t forget to bring an item of food with you when you come to Mass. Items in short supply are cookies and crackers. Monetary donations and prayers are greatly appreciated. May God bless you for your generosity. UNCLEAN, UNCLEAN “An attitude of gratitude” is a phrase often associated with the gospel accounts relating to the recently cleansed lepers. Or, depending on how you look at it, a lack of gratitude. Either way its usually because many of us think of the ten lepers that were cleansed with only one returning to say thanks. Not the case in this week’s readings. The leper in question actually disobeys Jesus who had, having been moved with pity, healed him and then asked him to “tell no-one.” How could you not tell anyone! It would have been difficult for any of us to keep this to ourselves and sure enough this man went about telling everyone he met. The whole story provides us with interesting elements to contemplate. The fact that our readings have centered around healings in recent weeks, and whilst God shows his merciful love in this way, He also shows His Sonship. Lepers by default were thought to be unclean and avoided at all cost. They were groups of people that were ostracized from their communities. Jewish law in particular is quite specific when it comes to things that are clean and unclean and here we have a popular and respected Jew. Jesus, not only talking to JFF takes place in the an unclean leper, but touching him. The idea of lepers being distasteful only dissipates in recent times. We gym on Thursday from 5:30-7pm are given great examples in St. Francis of Assisi who encountered Christ while ministering to a leper and of course we have the leper Saint in Fr. Peter Damian who devoted his life to loving his leprous brothers and CORE MEETINGS sisters in Molokai, Hawaii. As we begin to focus on our Lenten journey, we too should ask ourselves, in the Spiritual Center on Thurs from 7“where are the lepers we serve.” And perhaps what is leprous in our lives that also needs to be cleansed 8:30pm by The Lord? As we do, let us adopt the same state as our leprous brother in today's readings, and bow Lifenights after 5pm down before Him in humility and great faith, asking for His healing touch, and the power of The Holy Spirit mass on Sundays in to proclaim His Lordship to others. Offer His love and compassion to the needy. On Wednesday, we will all the APR from 6pmonce again don the ashes to begin our 40 day sojourn. Let us join with St. Francis and pray, "May the pow8pm er of your love, Lord Christ, fiery and sweet as honey, so absorb our hearts as to withdraw them from all that is under heaven. Grant that we may be ready to die for love of your love, as you died for love of our love." HELP A TEEN (Grow, Eat, Learn, Be Formed, Have Fun, Meet the Pope) The will be 2 major events that we would like to start fundraising for this year. For the summer Steubenville Retreat in New York City, August 5-7, the approximate cost for a group of 30 teens will be $8,000. For the trip to Philadelphia on September 22-25 to see the Holy Father, the approximate cost for a day trip for a group with 30 teens is to be determined, but initial estimates suggest between $3,000 and $6,000. Ways you can help... Here are some ways you can help our parish’s LifeTeen youth ministry: Financially and anonymously adopt a teen. Send in fundraising ideas to the youth minister via e-mail or phone (609-456 -8857). You can donate transportation freely for the various trips or you can offset our weekly food bill by contacting Nadine at 609-456-8862 to discuss donations, dishes, monetary aid or culinary skills. There are so many ways you can help us as we continue to strive to lead teens closer to Christ. Thanks ahead of time! The leper is told to tell no one what has taken place, but he tells everyone. Through that telling the hearts of those who ostracized the leper are also healed. May the hymns we praise God with at Mass this Sunday herald the mercy, forgiveness, and healing of the reign of Jesus. God bless you, Lori Hoos Music for Upcoming Liturgies Ash Wednesday - Cantor/Keyboard Sun., February 22, 2015, 9:30 am - Mass-Choir All other Masses (except LifeTeen) are Keyboard/Cantor.
