Dear friends, Collection for week of Feb. 7/8, 2015 Weekly Collection Weekly Income Needed $16,892 $16,500 $392 Weekly Over/(Under) ($3,729) YTD Over/(Under) Includes $4,337 E-Giving, 26% Participation Total Debt to Archdiocese: $2,333,061 Mortgage and past due assessments Operating expenses for the Parish are predominantly met with income from the Sunday offertory collections, as well as, tuition and other fundraising events. Our weekly collections have been running behind - approximately $4,000 (YTD) - our revised goal of $16,500/week. Over time this deficit will accumulate and hamper our ability to meet our expenses, as well as pay for the recent four major maintenance projects. So, do you consider yourself spiritually mature? Does the phrase “spiritually mature” resonate with you? Does it strike a chord? Does it challenge? Does it touch an inner longing? Or does it sound strange? Does it not seem to mean much at all? We may not use the phrase often, but spiritual maturity is an essential part of Christian life. We are called to grow to our “full stature” in Christ, as Saint Paul says. Followers of Jesus Christ are meant to be striving for Christlikeness in every aspect of their lives. This is maturity. How strange, then, that for many, spiritual maturity sounds like a foreign concept. In his new book From Here to Maturity, author Thomas E Bergler follows up on his first book Overcoming the Juvenilization of American Christianity. As one can tell from the title, that book dealt with Bergler’s contention that much of Christianity in America—in Main Line Protestant, Evangelical, Catholic and African American churches—is stuck at a juvenile stage. He doesn’t say this in a condemning way; he simply evaluates where people are “at” in their faith and concludes that, even among “practicing” Christians, faith-life is rather adolescent. On what does he base this? He cites examples from many polls, questionnaires and studies from the last decade. He also quotes from many experiences with his college students when they are asked about their faith lives. Common responses to faith questions were: “My relationship with Jesus is personal. He makes me feel good.” “I picked this church because their music is so moving. It helps me feel more spiritually alive.” “I pray to God on my own. I find God in nature. It’s peaceful and beautiful.” Even some seemingly sound answers come under his scrutiny. For example, Bergler comments: Many ordinary Christians in America describe the gospel as something like this: “Jesus dies for your sins so you can go to heaven when you die.” This gospel is what most of the college students I teach have learned growing up in their churches. If we look closely, we notice that this way of describing the gospel leaves a big blank spot where most of our life in this world should be. It is all about past sins and future reward. Is the rest of life just waiting until heaven? Is there no spiritual growth or participation in Christ’s mission in the meantime? Bergler contends, “A significant number of Christians do not regard growing up in Christ to be an intrinsic part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. . . They think a lot about God making them happy; they rarely think about God making them holy.” Ouch. The Parish Life Center (PLC) and Parish Offices are fully operational. All bills for construction and furnishings are paid. However, to facilitate timely completion of construction, we utilized Parish funds - which were repaid in January. The case statement for the Parish Appeal planned $50,000 to ABVM School. We have deferred payment of that commitment until after PLC bills were paid. These obligations will be fulfilled by October 2015. Therefore, it is important that you continue your generous support of the Parish Appeal. To date, we have raised approximately $367,000 from donations of more than 700 parishioners - such as you. We need to collect an additional $20,500 by December 2015 to fulfill our obligations for the scope of this Appeal. Thus, the Goal has been modified to reflect these needs. For more details, please contact John Brennan, Secretary of Financial Affairs, at [email protected]. He gets even more challenging with these words: “Those who hoped to add Jesus to their lives while leaving everything else undisturbed did not really understand the good news. . .to accept the gospel is to submit to a death and resurrection process accomplished by God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus offered a stark choice: hang onto your life and lose it or lose your life and find true life in him. . . People who are baptized into the name of the Triune God and are living according to the teachings of Jesus are people who have been spiritually transformed.” They are on their way to maturity. Now, you may or may not agree with everything written above. But hopefully you were challenged by something, “disturbed” by some comment. Good! Why? Because this Wednesday we begin the season of Lent. And the purpose of Lent is to challenge us, to “disturb” our comfortableness or complacency. The purpose of Lent is to remind us that we, the followers of Jesus Christ, are called to full spiritual maturity. We will reflect on that in this column during the weeks of Lent. We will be asking ourselves: What needs to be disturbed in my life? Where am I too complacent? Am I cooperating completely with Christ so that he might completely transform me and use me for his Kingdom purposes? Tough questions! They are part of the “dying process.” But the dying leads to the new life, the spiritually mature life of Easter. Peace and all good, Fr. Murphy Page 2 - 229 Assumption B.V.M. Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time Scripture Reflection February 15, 2015 "He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere." Nothing could stop the crowds from gathering. Men, women, and children traveled from near and far--everywhere--to find Jesus. Word had spread quickly about the miraculous healing of the leprous man. And people wanted to know what it was all about. Yes, he had the power to cure illnesses and drive out demons. But more than that, he had the power to change hearts. His words of compassion and mercy, and the actions that backed them up, must have caused many a conversion during those encounters in the deserted places. Although we don't have the opportunity to see him in person, we do have the chance to search for Jesus and to find him. Sometimes, he may seem remote. Maybe we don't automatically feel his presence. Perhaps, when times are tough, we wonder where he is hiding. But when we persevere in our journey by praying, reading the Bible, and receiving the sacraments, we too can find the Lord. And as we bring our needs to him, Jesus will be "moved with pity" for us as well and will extend to us the healing love that has transformed so many hearts throughout Christian history. Mark 1:40-45: Why do you think the cleansed leper disobeyed Jesus? Leviticus 13:1-2,44-46: Whom do we consider the “lepers” of our times? 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1: In what areas of your life do you best imitate Christ? Father Murphy used the book as a resource for the teaching Mass he led this past Fall. Feel free to utilize either resource on your Lenten Journey. The Catholic Lighthouse Media display will also have added resources and Lenten topics. A stocked fish pond means that a high-protein dinner is just a catch away. Catholic Relief Services helps families stock ponds that feed their families—even when crops fail. A donation of $25-30 will help provide fish for a family’s pond. Children will bring home rice bowls the second week of February. Rice Bowl offerings will be collected the week of March 22. As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environment, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. These policies reflect the Church’s commitment to always do more, as well as new Pennsylvania laws that went into effect on December 31, 2014. If you have direct contact with children, you may be a mandated reporter. Volunteers will be contacted by head ministers with updated information on how to properly report child abuse and asked to sign a new form acknowledging the updated training. More information about these important changes can also be found at www.childyouthprotection.org. The Avon Grove Ministerium, made up of ministers from all the Christian Churches in the Avon Grove area, is conducting its annual Prayer Project 155. This event takes place during Unity Week 2015—February 22-28.
