Ashes to Easter 2015
Lenten Opportunities
WHy DO WE USE ASHES? The use of ashes is
thought to have begun with Pope Gregory the Great
in the 6th century. In the Old Testament, ashes were
used as a sign of humility and mortality as well as
sorrow and repentance for sin. Receiving ashes on
the head as a reminder of mortality and a sign of
sorrow for sin was a practice of the Church since
the 10th century. The ashes are made from burnt
palms. Ashes are put on the forehead in the sign of
the cross as a reminder of the anointing with oil at
our Baptism.
Ash Wednesday Masses - 6:30AM, 8:00AM, 12:10PM, 5:30PM, 7:00PM
LENTEN REGULATION FOR
FAST AND ABSTINENCE
In the United States, Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday are days of fast and
abstinence. All other Fridays of Lent
are days of abstinence only.
Abstinence: The law of abstinence
forbids the eating of meat and food
prepared with meat or meat byproducts. The law of abstinence
means that a person is bound to
abstain beginning the day after one’s
fourteenth birthday.
Fast: The law of fast allows only one
full meal and two lighter meals in the
course of a day, and prohibits eating
between meals. The law of fast means
that adults are bound to fast from the
day after their eighteenth birthday
until the end of the day of their fiftyninth birthday.
Exceptions: Women who are pregnant and persons who are sick are
not bound by the law of fast.
FASTING AND ABSTAINING - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. All other Fridays of
Lent are days of abstinence only. Fasting is a biblical prayer form that is stressed during Lent.
SUNDAy MASSES - Saturday Anticipatory 4:15PM, Sunday 6:30AM, 8:00AM, 9:45AM, 11:30AM
DAILy MASSES - Monday-Friday at 6:30AM & 8:00AM and Saturday at 8:30AM. In addition, on Wednesdays and
Fridays during Lent we offer a 5:30PM Mass. A great way to become a better friend of Christ is to meet Him daily in
the Eucharist. Daily Mass is shorter than Sunday Mass, lasting less than one half hour.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION - 1:00PM on Sundays to 1:00PM on Saturdays. Come spend some quiet time with Jesus.
CHAPLET OF DIvINE MERCy WITH EUCHARISTIC HEALING SERvICE - Every Tuesday evening at 6:00PM, the Chaplet of
Divine Mercy is prayed followed by a Eucharistic Healing Service. Anyone who needs healing in body, mind or spirit
is encouraged to attend.
CHAPLET OF DIvINE MERCy - Prayed Mon-Fri following the 8:00AM Mass, Saturday following the 8:30AM Mass and at
4:00PM. Prayed on rosary beads, the Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS - On Fridays during Lent we pray the Stations of the Cross at 12:10PM and 6:00PM. Come to
the church for this beautiful service. It lasts about 30 minutes and is a great way to appreciate exactly what Christ
did for us by dying on the Cross to save us all.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS LENTEN FISH FRy - Every Friday during Lent, with the exception of Good Friday, from
4:30PM-8:00PM at 1117 N. Washington St. (Rt. 25) in Batavia. Adult dinners $13, children four to ten years of age $7,
children under four free. Menu includes baked and fried fish, fried shrimp, pasta with red sauce, potatoes, soup,
salad, coleslaw, veggies, rolls, milk and coffee. Cash bar available.
SACRAMENT OF PENANCE - Monday-Friday from 7:00AM-7:30AM, Tuesday evenings 6:00PM until all are heard,
Saturday 9:00AM until all are heard and 3:00PM-3:45PM and Sunday 9:15AM until 9:45AM Mass begins. Lent is a
time of penance and especially a time for us to repent for our sins and embrace the Mercy of God. See also “Be
Reconciled” below.
BATAvIA BROTHERHOOD BANqUET - Thursday, February 19th, at 6:30PM in Donovan Hall. See page 2 for details.
ST. MICHAEL BEREAvEMENT MINISTRy “END OF LIFE ISSUES” SEMINAR - Thursday, February 26th, at 7:00PM in the
Church. Come learn what the Catholic Church teaches about End of Life Issues.
ST. JOSEPH TABLE - On Thursday, March 19th, the evening begins with Mass in the church at 5:30PM followed by a
dinner to honor St. Joseph in Donovan Hall. See page 6 for more information.
TEEN LED LIvING STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH SIMPLE SOUP DINNER - On Friday, March 20th, following 5:30PM
Mass, Holy Cross teens will lead the Stations of the Cross. A delicious soup dinner will follow in Donovan Hall.
BE RECONCILED - Wednesday, March 25th, confessions will be heard continuously from Noon-8:00PM.

46th ANNUAL
This Wednesday we begin the Holy Season
of Lent by receiving our blessed ashes. The
minister places ashes on the head stating,
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you
shall return.” Ashes from the time of the Old
Testament symbolize mourning, mortality and
penance. This is reflected in the words of our Lord from the very
first Gospel reading of Lent (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18). Jesus states
that we need to pray, fast and give alms. Prayers of contrition, for
our sins and those of the world, can lead us in a healthy way to
mourn for offenses against God. Fasting is a penance by which
we mortify our bodily passions and make reparation for sin.
Almsgiving helps to remind us of our mortal nature. We can’t
take our material possessions with us to eternal life. By giving
alms we keep control of material goods rather than being controlled by them.
For the past several years in my previous parishes, I have
asked the faithful to do the Divine Mercy Challenge. It consists of
daily recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, going to
Confession before Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday and attending
one additional Mass each week. I call this The Three C’s for Lent:
CHAPLET, COMMUNION and CONFESSION.
About the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, it takes about 5 to 8 minutes to pray. While praying, we are meditating on our Lord’s passion and death. Our Lord Jesus tells us through St. Faustina,
“There is more merit to one hour of meditation on My sorrowful
Passion than there is to a whole year of flagellation that draws
blood; the contemplation of My painful wounds is of great profit
to you, and it brings Me great joy” (# 369). This saint of Divine
Mercy records in her Diary, “At the beginning of Lent, I asked my
confessor for some mortification for this time of fast” (#618).
She was, instead, to meditate on our Lord’s Passion and Death. “I
did not know that this would be so beneficial to my soul” (# 618).
God bless you with a Holy Lent,
Fr. Parker
P.S. The Parish Office and School will be closed Monday,
February 16, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
P.P.S. Please remember that beginning next Sunday, February
22nd, the 11:15AM Mass will be moving to 11:30AM.

Spiritual Adoption Month 6 - I am developing quite beautifully now. At 1 1/2 to 2 pounds and 12 inches long, I am
twice as big as I was last month. I am sitting up most of the
time to accommodate the final movement of all my internal organs. From 26 weeks, babies exhibit a whole range of
typical baby behavior and moods, including scratching,
smiling, crying, hiccupping, and sucking. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of surviving.
Don’t forget to pray for my mother and me.

modern secular culture of choice." Pope John Paul II

Annual St. Joseph Table
Thursday, March 19th
Following A Special 5:30PM Mass and Blessing in Donovan Hall
What is the St. Joseph's Day Table? St. Joseph was the protector of the young Mary and her Child,
Jesus, and the guardian of the spiritual home of Christians, the Church, and
of the material home too. This tradition began during a severe drought in
Sicily. In desperation, people prayed
to St. Joseph (their Patron Saint) to
intervene. They promised if the rain
came, they would prepare a big feast
in his honor. The tradition says their
prayers were answered. In gratitude,
huge banquet tables were set up in public and poor people
were invited to come and eat as much as they wanted. There
is no cost – but donations will be accepted. All donations will
go to the St. Vincent DePaul Society. We need volunteers to
help set up, serve, cook and tear down, as well as drop off
desserts, hors d'oeuvres, cheese trays, veggie trays or any kind
of foods that are easy to serve. If you are interested in helping,
please contact Michelle Fritz at 630-879-5247 or text 630-4045247 or call angela Lempke at 630-715-5210 – Thank you!

the Liturgical Season of Lent! Ponder deep in your heart the
remarkable words that are spoken to each of us as we are signed
with the blessing of ashes on Ash Wednesday..."Remember, man,
you are dust and to dust you will return!" These words are sobering as we recall our origin and our future! On Ash Wednesday we
begin our journey of renewal from death to life. This is a joyful season! Perhaps it would be wise to consider positive acts of love as
your 'Lenten Penance' this year. For example: more smiles than
frowns, a pat on the back for someone who needs or deserves it, a
thinking of you phone call, write a letter of cheer, even a hug can
bring joy to someone's life! Making others happy is what love is all
about! This Lent spread your love around and keep it going and
growing! Let's honor our instruction from St. Francis of Assisi...'to
lift people's hearts and to move them to spiritual gladness'!
Imagine how joy-filled your heart will be on Easter Sunday!
Let us pray:
Prayer for Ash Wednesday
Gracious God, this week we begin our Lenten period of inner
reflection and examination.
The days stretch before us and invite us inward to that silent, holy
space that holds your Spirit.
This special time beckons us to see our life through Christ's eyes
and the truth of your love incarnate.
Give us the grace to enter the space of these days with anticipation
of our meeting.
And, when we open our souls to your presence, let your loving
kindness flow over us and seep into the pockets of our hearts.
We ask this for the sake of your love.
Amen.
This Lent, touch the hearts and lives of others with meaning, compassion and love as you please do allow others to touch your heart
and life as well! God be with you this Lenten Season and beyond!
Mark your Calendar: Plan to attend our End of Life Issues and
Funeral Practicalities talk. This special Lenten event is open to
everyone who would like to attend on the evening of Thursday,
February 26th, at 7:00 PM in the church. See our announcement in
the bulletin today! Please come and bring someone with you!
Reminder: The St. Michael Ministry of Compassionate Care meets
this Thursday, February 19th at 7:00 PM in St Stephen.
Remember: The Funeral Liturgy Team is willing to meet with any
parishioners who would like to pre-plan their Funeral Liturgy. This
is a great gift of love for you and for your family. We will gladly
meet with you at your convenience. Call Mary Ann Sestak at
630.879.8525 to arrange an appointment.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP
“Jesus turned and saw them following Him and said to
them, ‘What are you looking for?’” – John 1:38
What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is your heart
longing for something deeper that can only be found by
spending time with God? Take time each day in silence,
and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.
PRAY FOR OUR SICK
Contact the parish office at 630-879-4750 or [email protected] to remove a
name from the sick list. Please help us to keep this list up-to-date! The weeks of July 1st
and January 1st we purge the sick list and begin fresh.
